“I therefore exhort you in Christ Jesus, to continue to look to Mary as the model of the Church,
as the best example of the discipleship of Christ.
Learn from her to be always faithful, to trust that God's word
to you will be fulfilled, and that nothing is impossible with
God.” – St. John Paul II
As Baptized Catholics, the fire of the Holy Spirit burns in each
of us and the closer we walk with Jesus the brighter it burns
for all of the world to see. In today’s Gospel, Luke 12:49-53,
Jesus says, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I
wish it were already blazing!” Jesus wants us to invite the
Holy Spirit to work through us everyday, to use His example
of unconditional love to build beautiful, meaningful relationships with Him and with others. Jesus reminds us that in order to have these meaningful relationships we must love God
first because He is the source of our life and then through
Him we can more fully loves others.
There is a story I was once told about a mother and her 7year-old son. It was bedtime and the son said to her,
“Mommy, I love you more than anyone else ever.”
It brought the mother great joy to know her son loved her, but
she also knew that she could not be the one he loved most.
She sat back down on the bed and said kindly, “Sweetheart,
thank you for loving me so much. You know how much I love
you, but there is someone that you need to make sure that
you love more than Mommy or Daddy or anyone else – do
you know who that is?”
The little boy whispered, “God.” The mother nodded with a
smile and the boy continued with tears in his eyes, “But, I
want to love you more,” he said as he hugged her tightly.
The mother replied gently, “I know you do, but when we love
God first, He shows us how to love and then we love everyone else better. So, if you want to love me the best that you
can, love God first and then you will.”
Months later as the mother was saying goodnight her son told
her, “Mommy, I love you second.”
Who is a better example of loving God first, than our own
Holy Mother, Mary, whose Assumption we celebrate this
Monday. Pray for her intercession on the days that you, like
the young boy in the story, struggle to love God first and take
comfort that she is always listening and willing to help us
because she is also our loving Mother.
Also, please join us in welcoming our new
ECHO intern - Sarah Jesse. Sarah is pursuing
her Master’s degree at Notre Dame. She is
studying Theology and will be with us for the
next two academic years. She will begin her
internship here on Tuesday, August 16 th and will
work with Dr. Margie Crooks to learn about and
assist with our different ministries. Look for her
staff profile in next week’s bulletin.

WELCOME, CRAIG AND CYNTHIA
On May 7th, Cynthia Contreras and Craig Ponto were married at Church of the Blessed Sacrament.
Cynthia writes, “We were accepted for having a beautiful child before marriage. It was so important to find
a church that accepted us. We were able to have our daughter baptized and not feel ashamed for doing
things out of order. God gave us our baby earlier than expected, but we weren’t turned away in shame
from the path God had planned for us. With arms wide open we were welcomed. Missy Krockover was by
far the biggest help. When we became members, we were so pleased with all the support and the warm
welcome we felt each Sunday. As a little girl I had always dreamed of my wedding being before God,
family, and friends. We had exactly that, and I will remember our day forever. We are blessed to have
found a church like Blessed Sacrament. We know God led us there.”
