OVERVIEW
HISTORY OF THE YMCA
Some folks know the YMCA of Ross County began
fundraising and development back in 1928, and was
incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable not-for-profit
organization by Luther Yaple, Max Fulks and several
others in 1931.
Back in 1931, the YMCA operated out of the Carlisle
Building at the corner of Paint and Second Streets. The
YMCA was later housed at 133 W. Second Street from
1939 until the current facility was constructed in
1963.
What many people don’t know is that the YMCA existed long before Mr. Yaple and Co. incorporated in 1931.
During the midst of World War I in 1917, the United
States War Department constructed Camp Sherman
along the present day route 104.

From 1917 to its decommissioning in 1921, Camp
Sherman was home to several YMCA facilities here in
Ross County. There were 11 YMCA's built for the soldiers across the camp grounds which provided food
and entertainment. There was one YMCA constructed
specifically for the African Americans.
Today, our YMCA serves over 100,000 visitors per
year. We currently enjoy over 3,000 members and employ 90 full and part-time staff members. Each year,
over 350 young people learn to swim in our aquatics
program. Over 250 children play sports in our Youth
Basketball league. Nearly 100 children attend our summer camp program. Our cause is to strengthen our
community through programs focused on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
Our Mission
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build
healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

We offer so many programs, not every
one made it to this brochure. To stay

The Marlins swim program has been a staple of
the YMCA since the 1960’s. Countless leaders
from our community have been avid participants
in our competitive swim program. The Marlins
compete against other YMCA’s across the state in
a host of swim distances. Swimmers for decades
have developed their skills as a part of the swim
team. Our natatorium continues to have swim
records posted from decades ago, as our new
swimmers aim to set new marks. Our team is
founded on the notion that teamwork, support
and effort are the foundations of lifelong success.
