Hallo Laserdisc- und DVD-Fans,
liebe Filmfreunde!
Mit der jetzt vorliegenden Ausgabe unseres
Newsletters können wir voller Stolz ein
kleines Jubiläum verknüpfen. Denn es ist
bereits die 200. Ausgabe! Erinnern Sie
sich? Angefangen hat alles im Jahre 1992,
also zur Hochphase der LaserDisc. Den
Newsletter haben wir damals in loser Folge an unsere Kunden verschickt. Als
Standardbrief per Deutsche Post. Ein
Internet gab’s damals noch nicht. Auch
hatte der Newsletter zu jener Zeit einen
Umfang von maximal drei doppelseitig
bedruckten DIN A4 Blättern. Alles schön
überschaubar und gemächlich.
Doch schon bald wurde uns klar, dass wir
die Frequenz für den Newsletter erhöhen
mussten. Denn bedingt durch die Tatsache,
dass das Thema LaserDisc in gängigen
Fachmagazinen nur äußerst stiefmütterlich
behandelt wurde, entstand bei den Sammlern ein immer größer werdendes
Informationsvakuum, das es mit Informationen zu schließen galt. Fortan durften
sich unsere Kunden auf einen monatlichen
Newsletter freuen - weiterhin auf bis zu
zwölf DIN A4 Seiten, hübsch gefaltet und
kuvertiert. Mit der Geburt der DVD wurde
dann alles ganz anders. Hatten wir doch
plötzlich zusätzlich zur LaserDisc auch
noch den kleinen Bruder in unserem
Produktportfolio. Von Stund an wurde der
Platz, der in jeder Newsletter-Ausgabe zur
Verfügung stand, äußerst kostbar. Eine
Ausdehnung des Newsletters auf mehr als
zwölf Seiten hätte damals das vorgesehene
Budget weit überzogen. Auch an eine höhere Versendungsfrequenz war aus Kostengründen nicht zu denken. Doch inzwischen
hatte sich das Internet mit seinen vielfältigen Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten
flächendeckend etabliert und so konnten
wir den längst überfälligen Schritt in die
digitale Zukunft wagen. Ausgabe 85 des
Newsletters war die erste Ausgabe, die wir
als herunterladbares PDF-Dokument auf
unserer Website bereitstellten. Das war im
Juli 2002. Und Sie sehen ja selbst, was
inzwischen daraus entstanden ist: eine
14tägige Publikation mit einem Umfang
von 40 bis 60 Seiten pro Ausgabe! Bei all
dem Faible fürs Digitale haben wir natürlich nie jene treuen Leser vergessen, die
sich nicht so viel aus der modernen Kommunikation machen und stellen diesen
nach wie vor eine (kostenpflichtige) PrintAusgabe zur Verfügung. Aber genug der
Selbstbeweihräucherung. Die setzen wir
dann wieder bei Ausgabe 250 fort!
Elvis und JFK kommen...
Es ist wieder eines dieser Beispiele, die
deutlich machen, dass es wirklich gute
Filme kaum in die deutschen Kinos schaffen. Die Rede ist von Don Coscarellis zu
Recht zum Kultfilm gekürten BUBBA HOTEP aus dem Jahre 2002. Einzig die Veranstalter des Fantasy Filmfests erkannten
das ungeheure Potenzial dieses schrägen
Horrorspoofs und präsentierten ihn in seiner Originalfassung während des Fantasy
Filmfests 2003, wo er sogleich von einem
begeisterten Publikum enthusiastisch beklatscht wurde. Ende. Aus. Schluss.
BUBBA HO-TEP interessierte offensichtlich keinen einzigen Filmverleiher und
verschwand aus deutschen Landen. Fans
konnten sich immerhin aus den USA oder
auch England mit der DVD des Films versorgen. Wir selbst haben die US-DVD von
BUBBA HO-TEP seit ihrem Erscheinen
sicherlich ein Dutzend mal angeschaut -

und waren jedes mal wieder aufs neue begeistert! Wenn der Film keinen Kinoverleiher für Deutschland findet, dann
doch ganz bestimmt wenigstens einen
DVD-Anbieter. Doch auch hier jahrelang
Fehlanzeige. Dann vollkommen überraschend eine Mitteilung, die uns in der vergangenen Woche erreichte: BUBBA HOTEP kommt auf DVD! Der Dortmunder
DVD-Anbieter E.M.S. hat den Film mit
deutscher und englischer Audiospur für
März als Leihversion angekündigt. Das
Leihfenster beträgt in der Regel drei Monate, so dass wir uns im Juni auf eine
schön ausgestattete Kaufversion freuen
dürfen. Für Kenner der Originalfassung
des Films dürfte es besonders interessant
sein zu sehen bzw. zu hören, wie es das
Synchronstudio schafft, den herrlichen
Slang des Originals ”rüberzubringen”.
Bruce Campbell als Elvis und der inzwischen verstorbene Ossie Davis als JFK
sowie der superbe Score von Brian Tyler
werden für einen unvergesslichen Heimkinoabend sorgen. Darauf geben wir unsere ”Laser Hotline Garantie”!
Und es kommt doch auf die Größe an
Ein jährliches Event zieht uns mal wieder
in seinen Bannkreis: das Widescreen
Weekend in Bradford, England. Als fester
Bestandteil des Bradford Film Festivals
findet es in diesem Jahr vom 16. bis 19.
März 2007 statt. Zu sehen gibt es wieder
viele Schätze einer Filmepoche, deren Slogan schlicht und ergreifend ”Size does
matter!” heissen könnte. Ob CinemaScope,
70mm oder 3-Streifen Cinerama - nie wurden die Leinwände der Kinos mit breiteren
und auch qualitativ besseren Bildern bespielt als in der Blütezeit der Großproduktionen, den 50er- und 60er-Jahren.
Die meisten der in Bradford gezeigten
Filme sind nur noch dort so zu erleben,
wie sie von ihren Machern gedacht waren.
Für echte Filmfans ein Grund, selbst stundenlange Flugreisen um den halben Erdball auf sich zu nehmen, um dabei zu sein.
Das trifft natürlich in gewissem Maße auch
auf uns zu und so werden wir im März eine
Reise ins britische Bradford antreten. Unser Geschäft bleibt daher in der Zeit vom
15. einschließlich 21. März 2007 geschlossen, wofür wir bereits jetzt schon um Ihr

Es beginnt 1971, als der kleine Augusten
zwischen die Fronten des elterlichen Ehekriegs
gerät. Vater Norman (Alec Baldwin) ist Alkoholiker,
Mutter Deidre (Annette Bening) vielleicht der
Grund dafür: eine narzisstische Persönlichkeit, die
ihren Sohn vernachlässigt und von der Kluft
zwischen der Selbsteinschätzung als brillante
Poetin und der real reduzierten Reaktion der
Literaturszene darauf aufgefressen wird. Nach der
Scheidung beginnt Deidre Seelenpflege beim
exzentrischen Therapeuten Dr. Finch (Brian Cox),
verabschiedet sich völlig aus der Verantwortung
für den Sohn, der im chaotischen Haushalt der
Finch-Familie landet. Dr. Finch wird sein
unorthodoxer, mitunter auch gefährlicher

man ähnliche Erfahrungen wie der Protagonist: erst
wirken alle Figuren schrill und überlebensgroß,
dann lebt man mit ihnen und ihren Eigenheiten,
verachtet sie, wie Benings grandios gespieltes
Muttermonstrum, oder liebt sie wie Jill Clayburghs
geisterhaft aussehenden, aber zutiefst
menschlichen Gegenpol. In der Ensembleleistung,
zu der auch Cox, Baldwin, Joseph Fiennes und
Evan Rachel Wood Bemerkenswertes beitragen,
ist „Krass“ im Kinojahr 2006 konkurrenzlos. Auch
deshalb lohnt es sich, diesen Film zu entdecken.
Ob man sich nun damit als Kontrastprogramm zur
eigenen Clanharmonie herausfordern oder sich
nach schlimmen Selbsterfahrungen mit einem noch

Hollywood studios are notorious for liberally borrowing
ideas from each other, with the resulting clutch of
similarly-themed films often bewildering the public as they
try to decide which movie to go and see. In 2005 Bennett
Miller directed CAPOTE, an Oscar-winning dramatization
of Truman Capote’s traumatic experiences writing the
celebrated novel IN COLD BLOOD. In 2006 Douglas
McGrath (COMPANY MAN) directed INFAMOUS, a movie
that follows exactly the same premise. Although it’s
difficult to see why such a story would need to be
immortalized in celluloid for a second time, McGrath does
throw in a few tricks to help separate the two films.
Talking head interviews with some of Capote’s
contemporaries, such as Gore Vidal and Babe Paley, are
used, and the movie has a lighter—almost comedic at
times—feel to it than Miller’s movie.

THE ILLUSIONIST—and the two films are sure to be
closely compared. In Nolan’s film, Hugh Jackman and
Christian Bale bring the characters of Rupert Angier and
Alfred Bordon to life. Rupert and Alfred were young
magician apprentices together, but became bitter rivals as
their careers began to shape their adult lives and a
terrible accident claimed the life of Rupert’s wife. In the
subsequent years Rupert has become wildly jealous of
Alfred’s superior talents, so in a last ditch attempt to steal
some artistic ground he sends his assistant, Olivia
(Scarlett Johansson), to infiltrate his rival’s lair and steal
the secret to a spectacular trick called „The Transported

exigencies of WWII, it’s difficult to imagine the situation
being otherwise. Dana Andrews and Farley Granger star,
respectively, as Capt. Harvey Ross and Sgt. Howard
Clinton. They are among a group of eight airmen who, as
part of Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle’s raid on Tokyo, have been
shot down by the Japanese and are being held in prison,
awaiting execution. However, for propaganda value, the
Japanese have decided to try their prisoners as war
criminals before eliminating them. They have also
promised to show clemency if any of the Americans are
willing to provide valuable military secrets. How will the
airmen, many of whom have already been badly tortured,
respond to this questionable offer? Despite caricatures of
the Japanese which now seem ridiculous, the cast, which
also includes Sam Levene and Richard Conte is uniformly
excellent, as is Lewis Milestone’s direction.
