However, the service for Cropwell Bishop is far from ideal. Many of us preferred the previous regular service to town via Radcliffe and timings of the supporting 850/852 services are not very helpful. We consider the service could be much improved for Cropwell if, for example, the V2 ran from Nottingham to Cotgrave and Cropwell Bishop then on to Cropwell Butler and Radcliffe (for ‘mainline’ connections to Nottingham and Bingham). CITROEN and PEUGEOT SPECIALISTS (But most other makes undertaken) MOTs The Citroen Clinic ELECTRICIAN Finding a good tradesman is hard. If you need a reliable electrician you will not be disappointed. Find out why our customers choose us... Call for a free no obligation quote. No matter what work you require we will provide you with a service which is professional. Part P registered and all work comes with a guarantee. The 41 Grantham Downtown service continues to run on Thursdays (10.20 from Church St) and it provides a useful direct (market day) service to Bingham arriving at 10.30. The alternative V2 service at 10.25 from Church St takes 35 minutes to reach Bingham. Note that the last bus (V2) back from Bingham is at 2.25pm). Cllr John Greenwood, November 2015 Tel: 0115 9232658 Give us ring and speak to a mechanic – not a receptionist! On Fridays, the S4 shopper bus to Morrisons, West Bridgford and Asda leaves Church St at 09.26 and Hoe View at 09.28. Concession passes are accepted. The S4 returns at 11.15 from Asda (11.20 from Tudor Square, 11.25 from Morrisons). The timetables of our various services and a journey planner can be found at: http://www.travelineeastmidlands.co.uk/em/XSLT_SELTT_REQUEST (put Cropwell Bishop in ‘Location’ or select ‘plan a journey’) Ludlow Hill Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 6HF The Villager 2 (V2) at 08.26 provides a useful morning service to town but please note it serves only Hoe View Road and does not start at Church Street. On Saturdays, concession pass holders may use this service, and the earlier services, free of charge. After the 08.26, the next bus to town is the V2 at 10.00. The 852 provides a shopper opportunity to Radcliffe (New Tesco etc.) with buses at 10.17 and 11.47 from Church St, returning at 12.10 and 2.10 pm from Radcliffe. REPAIRS Free Collection and Delivery from Cropwell Bishop if required! Please continue to pass any comments on our services to the Clerk, Jan Towndrow. Trent Barton and the County Council have agreed to further discussion and review of our services with community representatives early in the New Year. The evening buses (V2’s at7.30 and 10.10pm from Friar Lane to Cropwell Bishop) are proving popular but will only continue if there is sufficient demand – please give them a try. Trent Barton have confirmed that on Mondays to Thursdays, the 11.20 pm Cotgrave Connection from Friar Lane will still continue on to Cropwell Bishop (at least to Kinoulton Road) on request. Cropwell Bishop is well served by both the Memorial Hall and The Old School and both buildings are well used. For the future, our vision is for a new-build village hall to replace the Memorial Hall, in the longer term. We are therefore initiating fundraising efforts towards this aim. Next year we are planning an event, so watch this space for the details and a surprise. In the meantime, if you would like to donate to a new-build village hall savings fund, please go to the crowdfunding website link below as we are trying to raise £500 in 30 days. Cropwell Bishop - a "Modern Village" The present village has seen a new kind of domestic change; a rising standard in comfort and even luxury. No longer is water taken from the well, the cistern which was situated under the scullery floor to collect rain water off the roof or the canal. Gone are the earth privies in the garden and the chamber pots which are now valued as antiques, as are the paraffin lamps, the candle sticks and snuffers. To find an open fire in any house nowadays is the exception and horse and cart have been replaced by the car and bus. The stables of the working horses have been converted into garages for tractors. The old village was largely self supporting apart from the tradesmen, joiners, bricklayers, blacksmith, wheelwright, tailor, boot maker etc, there were grocers, butchers and bakers. The one commodity that did come from outside was fish, twice a week fishmongers called W Horsepool, Bingham, C Gore, Radcliffe-on-Trent came in their 2 wheeled horse drawn carts. A pot merchant would have a stand at the village “Turn” on an occasion for one night, crockery was laid out on the grass and auctioned by the Pot man. Two other visitors were the Rag and Bone man with a 2 wheeled dray drawn by a pony exchanging with the village children a paper windmill on a stick for a rabbit or hare skin or a bundle of rags. The travelling scissor grinder sharpening knives and scissors of any customer he could find. Hawkers - “Lame Jack” was a popular one he would sell tapes, ribbons, needles and pins to the village housewives from a wicker hamper on wheels. From time to time the Hurdy-Gurdy man wheeled a portable mechanical piano through the village, with a small monkey in a red jacket to add interest. Evangelists Silverwood and Whitehouse would also on an occasion have a marquee in the stackyard behind what the Cabin on Church Street. Nowadays the village is an assembly of individuals and classes then that of the past. However from the new society a refreshed and new community spirit has come about. Surprisingly, with the Great British weather, we only lost one game due to rain and managed to play from the first weekend in May until the last weekend in September. It may not have been the hottest of summers but the cricket was enjoyable and the results a massive improvement on previous seasons. Some memorable moments were achieved also, we had the first Cropwell CC player to score over 100 runs in a game (Fred Dulwich), quickly followed like a bus, we had the second (Pete Walton). In one game, Cameron Pywell took 5 wickets, including a hat-trick (3 wickets in 3 balls). Overall we scored more runs and won more games than in any previous season. We have welcomed on board new members, who have bought into our ethos (Fun is more important than winning!) and the club is growing. This was highlighted no more than in the last game of the season, the bi-annual Bishop V Butler game. We had 28 members playing on the day, with everyone getting a bat… not the usual scenario for a Sunday game!! A big crowd came and enjoyed the free BBQ & Bouncy Castle and watched Bishop win again, making it a double swoop for the second year running. It was a most enjoyable game played in the right spirit with plenty of friendly banter…To me though, the best part was seeing the next group of youngsters being involved for the first time, with 3 youngsters playing in the same game as their Dads.
