‘Fracking’ has bolstered economies, but noise still echoes around drilling
also proved problematic.
“You can hear the noise; you can
see the smoke. About every five
minutes there’s a cloud of smoke,”
he said. “I’d like to have the windows open, but the diesel smell
is too strong. The smoke blows in
the house.”
The 30-year-old Sasser served
six years in the Marines. He just
completed his training in the police academy and is searching for
a local law enforcement job. After
devoting most of his adult life
to the security of his nation, the
nearby rig has him worried about
the safety of his family.
He said workers leave trash
along the gravel county road separating his mobile home and the
rig. He had to spend nearly $1,000

Development in the Landmark
industrial park south of Decatur
could finally get under way.
The Decatur Economic Development Corp. agreed Tuesday to negotiate a proposed contract with
Landmark for an acceptable site.
The vote followed an hour-long
closed session concerning an industrial prospect wanting to locate in Decatur.
Landmark has a water-tower
manufacturing operation off U.S.
81/287 and Farm Road 2264, but
additional property around the
site has not been developed.
In his report, EDC Director Jody
Adams said he received agreements with members of the Cooper family, who will be competing
in the National Finals Rodeo in
December, to wear Decatur patches on their shirts during competition.
He reported on last week’s International Council of Shopping
Center’s trade show.
Prospects know where Decatur
is and are watching it closely, he
said. He made numerous contacts

Only one violent crime separates
the city of Newark from a serious
problem.
“It only takes one homicide or
shooting to create a huge problem
for us if we can’t investigate,” said
Mayor Matt Newby.
Newby, who has years of experience as a law enforcement officer
with the Wise County Sheriff’s Department, said the city is in a precarious situation because it is operating with a limited police force.
“The problem I see isn’t a lack of
work, but a lack of coverage,” Newby said. “If we’re going to keep our
department like we have it now,
we’ll need to close it out.
“We need to close it out or hire
a full-time person,” he said. “We’re
giving people a false sense of security.”
The city only has one part-time
officer, Troy Crow, who averages 10
to 15 hours per week on duty.
Crow said with such a limited
police presence, the one-man department is facing a “credibility
and liability problem.”
The main problem is the inability to investigate with such a limited force, Newby said.

Campaign aims to be Santas for seniors
By JULIE NEAL
With the bombardment of the
holiday season and charity requests
for children, Marjorie Sullivan’s job
and passion is to make sure the elderly are also remembered.
Home Instead Senior Care is
sponsoring “Be a Santa to a Senior,”
a campaign that collects gifts for
local, needy seniors to be delivered
Dec. 23.
“Our service is private pay,” General Manager Sullivan said. “There
are a lot of people out there who are
entitled to companionship and need
it, but don’t get it. We try to give
back at Christmas. That’s why we
look for the lonely, the financially
challenged.”
This is the second year for the program in Wise County, which runs
Nov. 1 through Dec. 10. Shoppers
can pick up an ornament from The
Unique Boutique or North Central
Texas Family Medicine. Each ornament will have a senior’s name on it
with his or her wish list.
“At the five-year mark, (the national program) had provided more
than 1 million gifts to 700,000 seniors in North America,” Sullivan
said.
Home Instead will hold a gift
wrapping party 1 p.m. Thursday,
Dec. 16, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur for anyone
who is interested. Home Instead is
asking for wrapping paper donations to offset costs.
“We all get together, play Christmas carols, have snacks and wrap
packages,” she said. “It gets done
pretty quick. It’s amazing how
fast you can wrap when there are
a bunch of people. It’s such a feelgood event because you get to see
all the stuff that’s going to all the
people.”
Senior recipients have filled out
forms with their wishes, most of
them being shut-ins along the Meals
on Wheels route. Forms were also
sent out to local nursing homes.
“I can’t change the health care
system. I can’t make us free,” she
said. “But I can, at Christmas time,
turn around and give back to those
people who can’t afford us to let
them know we care about them,
too.”

Alcohol suspected in early morning wreck
By BRANDON EVANS
A man is thankful to be
alive after rolling his passenger car end over end
early Friday morning near
Boyd.
Just after 3 a.m., Kameron
Moore, 22, of White Settlement was eastbound on Texas 114. About one-half mile
west of Boyd, he lost control
of his vehicle for unknown
reasons and swerved off the
road.
“He left the roadway and
jumped the culvert back
there,” said state trooper
Brandon Chaney, pointing
to a culvert nearly 100 yards
west of the resting wreckage. “It sent him into an endover-end tumble.”
Moore was pinned inside
the wreckage when emergency responders arrived.
Rhome and Boyd volunteer
fire departments assisted
Wise County medics.
White fog issued from the
mouths of rescue workers
as they surrounded the blue
car, crumpled and upside
down in the damp ditch.

CRASH — Kameron Moore, 22, of White Settlement rolled his car in the cold, dark morning
Friday. He was pinned inside and was flown to a Fort Worth hospital for a head injury. He was
expected to survive. Alcohol is believed to have factored into the single-vehicle wreck.
Worth.
The injuries appeared
to be non-life threatening,
Chaney said.
Moore was traveling alone
and wearing a seat belt.
No other vehicles were involved.
A worker for a wrecker
service attached a chain to
the exposed underbelly of
the vehicle. As the tightening chain flipped over the
car, a partially empty case of
beer tumbled out of the shattered window.
“There is evidence of alcohol consumption,” Chaney
said.
The wreck shut down Texas 114 for nearly an hour,
backing up traffic in the predawn darkness. The accident
is still under investigation.

OUR VIEWS
Farewell to Fouts Field
By PHIL MAJOR
When the sun comes up Sunday
morning, it will mark the first
time in more than a half century
that Fouts Field – 30 miles east
of Decatur – won’t be the official
home of the University of North
Texas Eagle football team.
The Mean Green will shift
across Interstate 35 to a new
venue still under construction, after closing a disappointing season
against Kansas State (and not
likely a UNT win).
First Texas Stadium, and now
this.
You know advancing age is
catching up with you when facilities you knew and loved outlive
their useful lives.
People in Europe live in homes
whose age is measured in centuries.
But not in America, where
newer is better. Forty or
50 years is an eternity.
Of course, you had to
know Fouts’ days were
numbered when the Denton school district built
a facility to rival Fouts
for the purpose of high
school sports.
Though my memories
of Fouts do not span its
entire lifetime, I first set
eyes on it when it was
less than a decade old. Thanks
to aunts who attended college
at the then North Texas State,
I got to experience some of the
glory days of the 1960s, when the
Mean Green phrase was coined,
and Mean Joe Green prowled the
defensive line, later to star in the
NFL.
I remember sitting in
the stands, when getting
to play in a bowl game
meant something, chanting, “We want a bowl bid”
for the 9-1 Eagles.
The Missouri Valley
Conference champs didn’t
get that bid, by the way.
And here we are more
than 40 years later, and
MAJOR the lesser conferences
still do not get their due.
But this is not a rant about the
BCS; it’s a farewell to a comfortable old friend.
The Eagles scored 42 points in
Coach Mitchell’s last game, closing his 42-year career. A missed
extra point earlier in the contest
meant faking that final PAT kick
to get the two points, probably the
only time in the history of football
that going for two with a 40-point
lead wasn’t considered unsportsmanlike. It was a perfect way to
honor a fine, old gentleman. Role
models like him don’t exist much
any more in sports.
Fouts was also the site of the
city’s huge 4th of July fireworks
show. It also saw one of Denton
High’s futile playoff attempts
to dethrone powerhouse Odessa
Permian in the ’70s. The Broncos
were 0-3 against the Panthers
during that span.
But despite the connections,
I was never an Eagle. Never
wanted to stick around my hometown after high school (though
two members of my family earned
degrees there, and both parents
earned a living on the campus).
Years later we returned to
Fouts for the performance of our
son’s summer percussion camp.
And one of the most memorable
comebacks I’ve witnessed in a
high school playoff game unfolded
there in 2001, in front of a crowd
that barely made a dent in the
seating capacity. It turned out to
be the last football game I would
see there.
And for the record, the new stadium will sit atop a part of the old
UNT golf course – another icon of
my youth gone!
Farewell to Fouts. Here’s hoping the new stadium brings a
resurgence of Eagle football to its
former glory.
Thanks again to Tim Cain
and all of you who support the

veterans.

cialist aspects of our nation.
Now we can have a debate on
how much socialism should be
implemented, but to hurl the
word “socialist” at people that
may be slightly more socialist
than you, is not only ignorant,
but completely hypocritical.
Unless you believe in abolishing all sorts of government assistance, then I suggest you stop
the fear mongering of a “socialist takeover.” Grow up people.
socialism has kept millions out
of poverty, driven down the cost
of food, and created education for
all, regardless of socioeconomic
status.
We must see socialism for what
it is, not what it is perceived to
be.

The immorality of
‘America at War’
By JIM HIGHTOWER
Are you aware that America has now been at war
for nearly a decade? We’ve been fighting, bleeding
and dying in two hellacious, multi-trillion-dollar
conflagrations since 2001 — and our blood continues
to flow, with no end in sight.
Well, not our blood. Not yours and mine. We continue to go about our daily routines — go to work, go to
the mall, go out to eat, go golfing, go to church, go on
vacation, go dancing and drinking. War? Americans
pay far more attention to the World Series than to
the ongoing carnage in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In a little-noticed speech, Pentagon chief Robert
Gates recently pointed out that, “For most Americans,
the wars remain an abstraction — a distant and unpleasant series of news items that do not affect them
personally.” Military service, he bluntly said, “has
become something for other people to do.”
He’s right. You see, “we” are not at war. We handed
off that awful duty a decade ago to the 2.4 million
active and reserve soldiers in the armed services, less
than 1 percent of our nation’s people. They and their
families are the ones “at war,” cycled and recycled
into debilitating and deadly deployments.
“We the People” are not even making the minimal

Miscalculations
put budget in bind
In November of every year,
traditionally Susan Combs, the
Republican state comptroller,
estimates revenues for the fiscal
year. Last year’s estimate was
$1.9 billion off compared to what
was actually collected Sept. 1,
2009, to Aug. 31, 2010. As a result, Texas continues to build on
its billion-dollar budget shortfalls, and Texas will yet again
borrow from the feds adding to
the national trillion-dollar deficit
as well.
To give perspective to Ms.
Combs’ miscalculations, her
overestimates exceeded the total
amounts spent by universities
such as UT-Austin, Texas A&M,
Texas Tech, University of Houston, University of North Texas,
UT San Antonio and Tarleton
State University combined.
The estimated tax revenue for
this next year can be found
here: (http://www.window.state.

These projections are likely
to be overestimated yet again,
which will result in another budget shortfall for 2011.
Is this really what Texans
voted for with the Republican
leadership? Bill White predicted
this would happen, but did
anybody listen? Keep voting red,
Texas. My granny always said,
“It’ll come out in the wash.”
Poor Granny; she was always

group to put flags on all the veterans graves for Veterans Day.
I brought the idea up before the
Veterans Group and suggested
that maybe the Boy Scouts could
do it. It was decided that if we
were to put up metal crosses
with a flag holder, it would be a
permanent installation and be
easy to install flags for the various holidays.
Part of the Eagle Scout project
is for the scout to design, organize, implement and fund his
project.
A list of veterans from the
Oaklawn Cemetery Board was
the starting point. Tim organized
the names by location, obtained
the 400 crosses, painted them
and coordinated installation at
the cemetery with the help of
various youth groups. The flags
were installed the weekend before Veterans Day and removed
the following weekend.
I am sure we did not get crosses installed on all the veterans’
graves at Oaklawn, but we do
hope to accomplish this as we go
forward.
If you have a gravesite that
needs a cross, please let me
know by calling (940) 627-5185.
Thanks to Don Niblett and
Wayne Hartley for their help in
this project, and thanks to 5P
Welding for making the crosses.
The Veterans Group hopes this
is the start of similar projects
for all the cemeteries in Wise
County. We will work with any
group desiring to do this so we
can standardize the crosses and
flags.
Our next project will be
Wreaths Across America, where
we will place wreaths at the base
of the monuments at the Wise
County Veterans Park in Decatur for the Christmas holidays.
See Socialism
for what it is
I am a Socialist, and so are
you. And, with the possible
exception of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul,
so is all of Congress. Even the
supposed free-enterpriser, fiscal libertarian Glenn Beck, is
sympathetic to ideas that, by
definition, would be considered
socialistic.
Despite staunch belief that
America is, and always has been,
a capitalist economy, the truth
is, it isn’t. The United States is
a mixed economy which, in essence, combines socialist ideas
with free-market practices. And,
of course, America is more capitalistic than it is socialistic, but
that doesn’t erase the fact that
Social Security, Veteran’s Assistance, Medicare, Medicaid, agriculture subsidies, public schools,
public libraries, and the United
States Postal Service are all So-

AREA
DECATUR
By PHIL MAJOR
Business is back up at
the Decatur airport and
civic center. And the public
library continues to enjoy
strong support.
In monthly staff reports
Monday, airport manager
Mike Sayers said fuel sales
are finally on the rebound
after they dropped during
the recession.
He reported 1,660 gallons
of aviation gas was sold in
September and 1,910 gallons in October. Jet fuel
sales were 1,965 and 3,325
gallons, respectively.
That compares to 1,481
gallons of aviation fuel in
September 2009 and 1,111
gallons in October. Jet fuel
sales were 1,623 gallons a
year ago in September and
1,571 gallons in October ’09.
Sayers announced that the
airport will have one rental
vehicle available at all hours
through an agreement with
Enterprise. Additional vehicles can be made available
with 24 hours notice.
Civic center manager
Duffy Terry also reported
business is good, with 63
events in October compared
to 55 a year ago. November,
usually the facility’s slowest
month, already has 48 bookings, and the Christmas season schedule is quickly filling up.
Library director Cecilia
Barham also reported continuing increases in circulation and participation in
library programs.
Some 106 youngsters attended the children’s Halloween party Oct. 28. Other
children’s programs continue to see double-digit increases.
The police report shows
the city has had 261 major crimes reported so far
in 2010, compared to 274 a
year ago. The bulk are thefts
(163) and assaults (68), both
of which are about the same
as the first 10 months of
2009.
Police have issued 6,633
citations in 2010 compared
to 6,955 a year ago.

What We Read
FOR STUDENTS OF THE BIBLE
Thanksgiving is the most legitimate scriptural holiday we
celebrate. Our history books tell us that the first Thanksgiving in the colonies
occurred in 1621 between the Plymouth colonist and native American Indians,
giving thanks to God (thankful to the natives for their help also) for a bountiful
harvest, that helped them survive after a brutal first winter. The first official
presidential proclamation issued in the United States was for a day of nation
public thanksgiving and prayer, was given by President George Washington, in
1789. In part it reads: “recommend to the people of the United States a day of
public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful
hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God…”. President Abraham
Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation, “The year that is drawing toward its
close has been filled with blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies. To these
bounties, which are constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source
from which they come,…the ever watchful providence of Almighty God”. Could
these leaders be elected in today’s “politically correctness”, for acknowledging
the blessings of Almighty God? These men must have read their bible and known
the scripture. “Giving thanks always for all things unto God…” (Eph 5:20). “Offer
unto God thanksgiving…” (Ps 50:14). “Continue in prayer, and watch in same
with thanksgiving” (Col 4:2). Can we be thankful enough? Just look at all the
food it takes to feed this nation in just one day. Thank God for those that plant
and harvest it, and for enough sunlight and moisture for it to grow.

of mineral rights owners

Searching
for compensation
Sharon Wilson, of Greenwood, stands in front of a
screeching drilling rig about
600 feet from her property
line. As a landowner and
mineral rights owner, she
looked forward to getting
those checks in the mail.
“I wanted to lease my
mineral rights and become
the next Barnett Shale millionaire,” Wilson said. “So
I started researching how
to get the best deal for my
minerals.”
The more she learned
about the possible environmental impact of gas production, the more concerned
she got. She now operates
a blog called Blue Daze,
which has become the go-to
for information concerning
drilling and fracturing in
the Barnett Shale.
“It’s upsetting to me how
the industry is so unregulated here in Texas,” Wilson
said.
The Texas Railroad Commission (TRC) monitors
drilling operations into the
shale. Both Ireland and Wilson agree the commission is
tremendously understaffed.
“We only have 83 field
inspectors,” Wilson said.
“Each one is responsible for
about 3,300 wells to inspect.
A recent audit found that
a lot of wells hadn’t been
inspected in five years.”
“There have been discussions that they (TRC) don’t
have enough (inspectors)
and that’s probably true,”
Ireland said. “I think in the
next Texas legislature that
will probably be reviewed.
There might be a budget
change so the (TRC) can
have more inspectors.
“I think that would be a
good thing,” she said. “The
industry agrees that having
more inspectors would help
promote the public trust.”
Despite owning mineral rights and receiving
monthly checks in the mail,
she wants to see serious
changes to how the industry
is regulated.
“I used to hear nothing but birds and natural
sounds,” she said. “Now
I hear a compressor ... I
would give up my royalties,
gladly, if we could give it
up. I don’t want to profit off
another person’s expense.
“They call natural gas a
clean energy, but it’s a very
dirty extraction process.
We’re damaging what our
children inherit. The water
usage to extract natural gas
is not sustainable.”
Just like Sasser helped
secure freedom by fighting
abroad, Ireland feels reducing dependence on foreign
sources of oil is vital to our
national security.
“Natural gas has the potential to reduce our import
of foreign oil,” Ireland said.
Wise County Messenger Classifieds
www.wcmessenger.com/class
“We currently import 70
percent of our petroleum.
And a lot of that is from
countries that aren’t necessarily friendly toward the
United States.”
Ireland doesn’t see production in the Shale ending
anytime soon.
“The Barnett Shale is
only half drilled up,” Ireland said. “There will be
more drilling because in the
scheme of things it’s only
just begun.”
Since more drilling seems
inevitable, Wilson wants to
see the industry adopt the
plans of “Drill-Right Texas,”
a comprehensive clean
drilling plan developed by
the non-profit Texas Oil and
Gas Accountability Project.
As the debate rages in
town halls and the state
legislature, families like the
Sassers continue to be stuck
in the middle.

NEWARK
Questions surround police ...
Continued from page 1A
“Everybody thinks that
police are here for traffic
control, but that is only one
aspect,” Newby said. “But it
is investigating crimes that
protects the public interests.”
Newby mentioned one
crime in particular. About
two weeks ago, someone vandalized a sign in front of the
city hall.
“We just had a problem
with our sign,” he said. “We
called the sheriff’s department, but they told us to wait
for our officer because it’s not
an emergency.”
The suspect or suspects
spelled out the word “LIAR”
on the city’s marquee. It’s
the second time in the past
month the sign has been vandalized. The letters were previously rearranged to spell
“COUNCIL CORRUPT.”
“Dispatch flat-out refused,”
Newby said. “And this was a
small crime. Imagine if this
was a serious crime.”
He said the chain-of-command in gathering evidence
and a quick response in investigating is needed to put

vandalized recently. Mayor Matt Newby says the sheriff’s
office wouldn’t send an officer to investigate because it

together a solid case. Newark’s current situation does
not allow for that.
Newark attempted to bolster its force, but the new
hire didn’t stick.
Last month, the Newark
city council hired James Rose
to serve as a part-time chief.
Rose serves as chief of neighboring Rhome. The council
thought the close proximity
and familiarity with the area
would be a plus for Newark.
“We thought we had a new
part-time chief,” Newby said.
However, Rhome Mayor
Evelyn Obenour placed Rose
on a short stint of administrative leave after Newark
hired him. She said Rose
didn’t inform her or the
Rhome council of his decision to pursue or accept the
second police chief job.
Rose has been reinstated
as Rhome’s chief of police,
but he withdrew from the
Newark position.
Newby said the city either
needs to contract with the
sheriff’s department for coverage or hire a full-time officer. However, he wasn’t sure
if the city had the funds to
pay for the position.
However, Crow told the
council in a meeting last
week that he could solve the
police department’s lack of
manpower.
“I do have the initiative to
put together some reserve
police officers right now,”
Crow said. “But first you
have to give me the authority to do that.
“If you don’t make me chief,
give me the interim authority,” he said.
Even though former police
chief Terry Fiene retired at
the end of September, Crow
said the city has been without a chief for the last 13
months.
“Terry worked hard as
chief, until he stopped working for pay, then he stopped
working,” he said.
Fiene started working on a
volunteer basis last year at
his own request.
The council will discuss
the issue further at its December meeting.

SURROUNDED — Boyd’s Chelsea Landes tries to split Alvord defenders Carley King and Marissa Shedcik during the Lady Bulldogs’ victory Tuesday night.
Youth provides win for Alvord
Lady Bulldogs’ freshman hits big shots late to beat Boyd
By RICHARD GREENE
With veteran standouts on both
teams, it was the youngest player on
the floor who provided the difference
Tuesday night in the showdown between former district foes the Boyd
Lady Yellowjackets and Alvord Lady
Bulldogs.
Alvord freshman Marissa Schedcik
drained a three-pointer from the top
of the key with 35 seconds left to put
the Lady Bulldogs up by four as they
went on for a 55-49 victory at Boyd
High School gym.
“I knew I had to shoot,” Schedcik
said. “I took my chances and luckily
it went in.”
Schedcik, who was coming off a
solid tournament in Ponder where
she averaged double figures, finished
with a team-high 17 points.
Her game-clinching three-pointer
came after she found a crease in the
Boyd defense and took the ball to the
basket for a layup with 1:19 left that
gave the Lady Bulldogs a 50-49 lead.
“We had a play set up for Carley
(King), but Marissa read the defense
and drove the ball to the basket,” said
Alvord coach Rob Schmucker. “She
made two big decisions and plays on
consecutive trips down the floor.

The game was tight throughout

game’s largest lead of eight, 20-12, in the second half, keeping the ball in the first quarter as Boyd grabbed

of free throws to tie the game at 29.
Boyd owned a 31-29 halftime lead.
“Everything I put up went in,”
Tidwell said about the first half.
She had just two points in the second half, finishing with 16. Alvord
doubled her the entire second half.
“Every time I got the ball, they
were right there,” Tidwell said. “We
couldn’t get anything going. It was really frustrating in the second half.”
Boyd coach Lynn Cranfill said the
Lady Bulldogs tightened the defense
and forced his team to go to other options in the second half.
“They were boxing Jessica and
doubling Shelbi,” he said. “They took
away 75 percent of our offense. Stormi McCarter and Shae Williams hit
some big shots. We just couldn’t get
more than one of our scorers going at
one time. Rob does a good job with his
bunch.
“Our kids played hard. Alvord got
the best of us tonight, but we’re a lot
better than last year.”
King hit a three-pointer to start a
7-0 run for the Lady Bulldogs that
gave them a 40-33 lead with 3:50 left
in the third quarter. King had nine
for Alvord.
Boyd fought back to get within three,
42-39, going into the final frame.
Boyd pulled even early in the fourth
quarter and took a one-point lead, 4948, with 1:34 left on two free throws
from McCarter, who scored eight.
That set the stage for Schedcik’s
heroics down the stretch.
Jordan Ward added 14 for Alvord.
Kala Cash put in eight, Ariel Rogers
four and Sam Hahn one.
For Boyd, Williams scored eight and
Chelsea Landes three.

Panthers to their third straight win
to start the season.
“The kids are playing hard and getting up and down the floor,” said Paradise coach Todd McCormick. “This

Paradise led by five, 19-14, at the

UP IN THE AIR — Boyd’s Travis Williams challenges the
shot of Alvord’s Casen Baker during the Yellowjackets’ win
Tuesday.
After just two practices, the Alvord Bulldogs managed to stay
within striking distance for one half
Tuesday night in their season opener against a former district foe, the
Boyd Yellowjackets.
But they could not find the shooting touch to mount a charge as the
Yellowjackets ran off to a 56-41 victory at Boyd High School gym.
“For two days of practice, we did
a good job,” said Alvord coach Larry Hicks. “We did a good job on the
boards and got up and down the floor
well. The shooting will come. I saw a
lot of positives to build from.”
Boyd moved to 3-0 after winning
for the second night in a row. The
Yellowjackets rallied to beat Henrietta Monday.
Boyd coach Oscar Hernandez said
his team handled the tough schedule well.
“We played hard,” he said. “For the
second half of back-to-back games,
we looked good at times and a bit
sluggish. But with one week of practice, I’m happy to start 2-0 [with all
the regulars]. We have some young
guys growing into their roles.”
Both teams were plagued by turnovers early. Alvord committed 12 of
its 30 turnovers in the first quarter.
Boyd lost the ball nine times in the
first eight minutes and had 24 turnovers in the game.
Boyd overcame the early miscues
to get a 12-5 lead. Boyd ended the
first quarter on a 6-1 run over the final 1:12. Junior Whatley started the
run with a three-pointer. Whatley
finished with 15 points.
“Junior is Junior,” Hernandez said.
“He’s playing well and running the
team.”
Chasen Starnes built the Boyd
lead to 15, 23-8, with 3:18 left in the
first half on a three-pointer. Starnes
scored 13.
Alvord was able to get within 12
points, 29-17, at the break after a
basket inside by Harley Davila. He
finished with 10.
Boyd put the game away in the
third quarter with an 11-2 run that
put the Yellowjackets up 42-21 at
the 2:45 mark.
Boyd took a 43-24 lead into the final frame.
The Yellowjackets gained their
largest lead, 50-24, with 5:26 remaining. But after being down by 26
points, Alvord ended the game with
a 17-6 run to get back within 15.
Casen Baker scored seven of his 11
points for the Bulldogs in the fourth
quarter. Trevor Hardee had seven
for Alvord. Clay Hopkins put in four.
Sean Sherman, Maurisio Perez, Luis
Maldonado and Alex Bailey added
two each. Austin Bowen had one.
Jared Cate led Boyd with 19. Josh

Hounds pick up first
victory of season
Davis returns for
Slidell in big win
The Slidell Greyhounds overcame a slow
start to pick up their first win of the season
Tuesday over Bryson, 41-39.
Slidell needed a 19-4 run in the third
quarter to grab a 29-25 lead going into the
fourth quarter. The Greyhounds weathered
the fourth quarter, while being outscored 1412.
“We made some free throws and held on,”
said Slidell coach Andy Simpson. “We have
an inexperienced group. We don’t know how
to win yet. In three of our five games, we had
a lead late and didn’t hold on.”
Slidell got off to a rough start, managing
just four points in the first and six in the
second quarters. The Greyhounds trailed 2110 at halftime.
“We had some of the most brutal shooting
in the first half I’ve ever seen as a coach,”
Simpson said. “They gave us open looks, and
we did everything fairly well but put the ball
in the hole.”
Daniel McCasland, Dylan Carnes and
Trent Garrett all scored nine points. Omar
Gomez added seven, Michael Fuller four and
Scott Zuniga three.
The Slidell Lady Greyhounds welcomed guard Sarah Davis back to the
lineup Tuesday with an easy 68-12 victory over Bryson.
Davis, who had missed the Lady
Greyhounds’ first four games with a
hamstring injury, scored 14 in her first
game back.
“She did what I asked her to do,” said
Slidell coach Cody Vanover. “She didn’t
drive the ball. The hamstring was a lit-
tle tight [Wednesday] morning.”
Slidell jumped out to a 15-2 lead three
minutes into the game. The lead was
stretched to 22-4 at the end of the first
quarter. Slidell led 42-6 at halftime.
The Lady Greyhounds built the lead
to 50, 56-6, going into the fourth quarter.
Hannah Pakulat led Slidell with 20
points. Allie Staub added 14 and Katy
Stephens 10.

Lady Dragons
hold off Bellevue
The Chico Lady Dragons
ran out to a fast start but had
to hold on to beat Bellevue
42-39 Tuesday.
Hannah Avants led the
Lady Dragons with 17 points
as they moved to 3-1 on the
season. She also had nine rebounds and six steals.
“It’s still early, and we have
a lot to learn,” said Chico
coach Steve Qualls. “But it’s a
good start.”
Chico started the game
with an 11-2 run and led
20-10 at halftime. The Lady
Dragons built the lead to 14
early in the third quarter.
“We hit a three out of the
half,” Qualls said. “Then we
got in foul trouble, and they
started their run.”
Bellevue got within six, 3226, going into the fourth quarter. Bellevue outscored Chico
13-10 in the final frame, but
the Lady Dragons held on for
the win.
Malori Moss joined Avants
in double figures with 14.
Ann Turlington pulled
down 12 rebounds to go along
with five points.

Chico comes up short
The Chico Dragons could not overcome a
sluggish third quarter Tuesday in a 65-62
loss to Bellevue.
Bellevue limited Chico to just nine points
in the third quarter, grabbing a 50-48 lead.
Bellevue outscored Chico 15-14 in the final
frame to preserve the win.
Chico fell to 0-2 in the loss.
Chico led early 20-17, but coach John
Shaw said they missed some opportunities.
“We couldn’t get anything going in the beginning,” he said. “We tried to get back in it,
but it was a little too late.”
Chico was led by Dylan Hightower with
17 points. Gabriel Rohan and Matt Robinson added 12 each.
