Brystone, West Stonesdale
Sleeps 6
***** Gold Award
Brystone is a distinctly luxurious yet contemporary 300 year old Yorkshire Dales
farmhouse in a divine location in the tiny hamlet of West Stonesdale. It is an old
farmhouse with a fabulous stone fireplace, beamed ceilings, as many bathrooms as

of waterfalls, locally called forces, Wain Wath Force, Kisdon Force, East Gill Force and
Catrake Force, all only a short walk or drive away.
This is a beautiful renovation of an old property brought back into use as a house
again. The family have done much of the work themselves with the help of many
local craftsmen and this shows in the attention to detail using the original features of
the ouse whilst bringing it into the modern world with all of the facilities that we
expect nowadays. Brystone is a house to enjoy and remember.

Cauldron Falls, West Burton
Sleeps 2
****
In a dreamy setting in a 15th century mill above Walden Beck , Cauldron Falls
apartment is perfect as a romantic retreat for two, offering short breaks all year.
To one side it is only a stones throw from the ancient packhorse bridge and
Cauldron Falls which were sketched by JMW Turner on his Grand Tour of
Yorkshire in 1816. To the other side you feel like you are up in the tree tops
overlooking Walden Beck and the village with views of Bishopdale beyond.
West Burton is a lovely village and is known amongst other things for its many
packhorse bridges, large village green, market cross, stocks and the waterfalls .
You are surrounded by greenery and views of Bishopdale and Walden Beck. Only
50 yards away are Cauldron Falls which have formed their own natural
amphitheatre-great for a picnic and a paddle. The expansive village green is only
a couple of minutes walk away, and the village pub, the Fox and Hounds, is a
short walk across the green. Cauldron Falls has a lovely atmosphere with the
beck tumbling past below and West Burton on the doorstep-great for enjoying
village life in this historic old building.
Accommodation
It is hard to say what floor the apartment is on! From
the waterfall side it is up two short flights of stairs with
a shared entrance with the top floor apartment. It is
higher from the beck side to the north as the Mill is
built into the hillside, which is why the views are so
good from this side of the apartment.
The accommodation is all on one level. There is a
lovely king size bedroom with a thick, pocket sprung
mattress, plenty of hanging space with built in
wardrobes and antique pine furniture.
There is no garden but you are surrounded by

Rose Cottage, Askrigg
Sleeps 4

This charming, quaint double fronted Dales cottage lives up to its name
with a garden full of roses in the summer, where you can pass the time
of day and watch the world go by from the comfort of your own garden.
Rose Cottage is new to our portfolio for 2009, and is sure to be very
popular.
It is a lovely end of terrace stone built cottage on the edge of the
popular village of Askrigg, only a few minutes walk from the centre of
the village with its pubs, restaurants, teashops, good old fashioned
village shop and a florist. Crammed full of character, it has a handbuilt
kitchen, an open fire, deepset windows, stone shelves and beamed
ceilings, with an old barn behind it which still has a cobbled floor and the
cattle stalls where the cows were milked, so there is plenty of storage
space for your outdoor gear.
There are walks from the door in abundance, and the added benefit of
your own car parking space, which is rare in the village. Whatever the
time of year, there is plenty to enjoy and do both in the village and the
Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The Shippon has been tastefully converted into a 2 bedroomed cottage with a

Urlay Nook, Askrigg
Sleeps 4
*****Gold Award
This is the only 5 star holiday cottage in Askrigg, and one of only a handful in The
Dales, and is probably the best two bedroomed holiday cottage in Askrigg. It is prettily
yet conveniently situated on the edge of the village, next to Askrigg Beck and with
views from the south facing rear of the cottage onto open fields, yet is still only a
couple of minutes walk from the centre of the village with its shops, pubs, restaurants
and church.
This is a cottage filled with light-it has 20 windows and 4 outside doors! Original
features abound throughout the cottage, with its thick stone walls, beams, bread
oven, and window seats. The cottage is co-ordinated throughout and decorated with
paints from Farrow and Ball and The Little Greene Paint Company. The mixture of
new and antique furniture enhances the true cottage atmosphere whilst ensuring
that you have all of the modern comforts that you have worked hard for and
deserve.
This is a luxurious and comfortable cottage in a fantastic location, equipped to an
extremely high standard to ensure a warm welcome and fabulous holiday, and this is
confirmed by the accolade of the 5 star grading by VisitBritain.
Accommodation
Urlay Nook is a very special cottage with a cream
shaker style dining kitchen with beech worktops,
dresser, cream and wood table and chairs, stone floor
and door into the (hopefully) sunny, south facing
garden. The utility room is off the kitchen with
additional storage and drying space. There is a
separate stone flagged and dramatic dining room,
leading into the downstairs lobby with original bread
oven in the massive stone walls. From the lobby, you
access the living room with its stone fireplace with
multifuel stove, and two large, comfortable settees to
curl up on and relax.
Upstairs there is a large master kingsized bedroom
with a stunning handcrafted 6 ft bed and ensuite
shower room, a magnificent beamed ceiling, antique
furniture, and flatscreen TV. The twin bedroom has a
romantic pair of white and brass beds, antique
furniture and a flat screen TV. The Villeroy and Boch
house bathroom has a separate large shower and
bath.
The cottage is next to the road, but is still lovely and
peaceful with the sound of the beck running past it-

West End Cottage, Askrigg
Sleeps 4
****
Gold Award
West End Cottage is grade 2 listed and is probably one of the oldest cottages in
Askrigg, right in the cobbled village centre opposite the church. It has a lovely, large
south facing walled garden with a raised patio area, with meadows and hills behind
to give that spacious feeling of the countryside on your doorstep, as indeed it is, yet
with the pubs, restaurants and shops within a stones throw. The cottage has a wealth
of original features with stone flags, planked floors and doors, and beamed ceilings
throughout the cottage, which is filled with nooks and crannies.
The cottage has been restored in an understated yet supremely tasteful fashion, so
that it has an air of luxury with features such as the handbuilt kitchen with Rayburn
stove and fabulous kingsize master bedroom with its massive beams and extensive
views to the hills beyond, but has lost none of its original character which shines
through and enfolds you as soon as you walk through the door.
Accommodation
The cottage has an entrance porch, and from this you
enter the stone flagged, beamed front room with its
two comfy settees and multi fuel stove. An original
storage cupboard houses tourist information, DVDís,
books and games. Off the living room is the cosy stone
flagged dining room, with its old round table, chairs
and antique dresser. Also off the living room is the
original stone shelved scullery, now a useful pantry
and utility room. The cottage has a pretty hand built
kitchen with Rayburn stove (very easy to operate), and
from here the back door leads across a grassed area of
garden belonging to the house next door, to the old
barn behind the cottage, and through this to the south
facing and private walled garden which belongs to the
cottage and is for your exclusive use. The barn gives
ample storage space for outdoor gear and bikes.
There are two charming and spacious single
bedrooms on the first floor, along with the family
shower room with a spacious and modern power
shower. The master bedroom is up a further flight of
stairs tucked away at the top of the cottage. This is a
kingsized bedroom with the bed on a raised dais and a

Visitors may recognise Cringley House as ‘Skeldale House’ from the BBC TV series ‘All Creatures Great and

Askrigg
There is a good village shop which can supply all of your basic needs-if you don’t see what you want then ask
them-it is surprising what they stock. Askrigg also has a delicatessen in the village where the owner cooks
delicious meals, cakes and sweets which can be purchased and brought home to eat in the comfort of the
cottage or order a picnic to take with you on your travels. Milk, cream and eggs can be bought from the farm in
the village. There are 3 pubs, The Crown Inn, The White Rose and The Kings Arms which is a former coaching
inn. All of the pubs provide bar meals and The Kings Arms also has The Silks Restaurant. We are able to offer
our customers a discount on food at The Kings Arms except for the Early Bird menu. Nearby is the luxury

Hawes
Hawes is a small and bustling market town at the head of Wensleydale and is surrounded by high fells. It has a
cobbled main street and stone buildings from the 17th century onwards and still has shops which are
individually owned family businesses and which are unique to the town. There are good craft shops, pubs,
cafes, restaurants and food shops and there is a weekly market on Tuedays-this is shopping how it used to be.
Hawes, whose name originates from the word Hause meaning a narrow neck of land, has had a market charter
since 1699 when it was granted by William III. You can still see the old market toll-house next to the Market Hall
and one of the oldest buildings dates from 1668 when it was built as a Quaker rest house-there is still a strong
Quaker community in the area.
There is a fascinating Dales Countryside Museum which shows the history of the area from agriculture
through to lead mining and the present day. The Hawes Ropeworks, where you can see rope being made on
its rope walk exports its rope all over the world.
Leyburn
This is a thriving little town in a beautiful location and well worth spending a bit of time exploring.
Completed in 1399 by Richard le Scrope, Chancellor of England to Richard II, its scars bear testament to over
600 years of fascinating history including involvement in the Pilgrimage of Grace, Mary Queen of Scots
imprisonment and a Civil War siege so a trip to Bolton Castle is worth it for both the myriad of historical tales it
can tell, but also to explore what was a major part of ITV1's recent TV show, The Dales.

Richmond
Richmond was founded by the Normans in 1071, and the castle still dominates the town. In medieval times
the town was an important market, which continues to this day with weekly markets. Much building took
place in the Georgian period, and this is still evident in the town today with elegant townhouses, the Georgian
Theatre Royal, the castle walk, the obelisk in the Market Place and the Culloden Tower. More recently the
railway came to Richmond, and whilst this is no longer the case the old station is now used as a health and
leisure suite, including a swimming pool. In the historic Victorian railway station there is a contemporary café
bar and restaurant; a modern, two-screen cinema; an art gallery over two floors; a free heritage centre; and six
artisan food producers - open to the public and selling their produce. Visitors can buy from a medley of
Yorkshire delights from a bakery, cheese-maker, micro brewery, ice-cream parlour, fudge house and honeymaker.
There is also an historic link with The Green Howards, and the fascinating Green Howards Museum is in the
centre of Richmond. Military links remain to this day as the world famous Ghurkas are based at nearby
Catterick Garrison.
Other attractions include the Millgate House Gardens, a walled garden behind one of the Georgian houses off
the market place. There are also the Friary Gardens, the ruins of Easby Abbey, the Richmondshire Museum
and the Georgian Theatre Royal, Britain’s most complete Georgian playhouse, with its professional
productions. If shopping is your thing, then you will not be disappointed, since Richmond has any number of
individual shops and galleries that you will not find elsewhere, and there is an excellent selection of pubs,
restaurants, cafes and takeaways to suit every pocket and taste.
Just outside the town you are straight into the spectacular countryside of the Yorkshire Dales National Park,
which you can explore by vehicle or on foot, and further afield are the North York Moors National Park and the
Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall, the East Coast, Durham, Newcastle, York, Beamish Museum, and much, much
more.
Richmond makes a fabulous base, whether you just want to park up the car and explore the area on foot and
enjoy the local facilities, or travel further afield and get to know the North of England better.
