On October 21, Mr. Carl Steward of Honor Flight Bay Area spoke to our Rotary Club and informed us of their activities. Richard Trotter, in the center of the picture and a member of the Rotary Club of Pacific Grove served during World War II as a pilot, has been one of our speakers and provided us with some of his experiences. Mr. Stewart gave us a very interesting insight in the activities. He explained how Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s Veterans for all their sacrifices. They transport our heroes toWashington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior Veterans – World War II survivors, along with other Veterans who may be terminally ill. The inaugural Honor Flight Tour took place in May of 2005. Six small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio, taking twelve World War II Veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, D.C. In August of 2005, an ever-expanding waiting list of Veterans led the transition to commercial airline carriers with the goal of accommodating as many Veterans as possible. Today, they continue working aggressively to expand the program to cities across the nation. The Rotary Club of Pacific Grove is proud to sponsor Richard Trotter on a spring flight, together with a companion, and we will be hearing of his experiences upon his return.
