Brief History of Coal Mining in KZN


Discovery of coal in KZN first documented in 1850s
Commercial mining activities commenced in 1865


Initially started by the British to supply:







producing 1 million tons by 1905
Total of 66 mines has operated since 1979
Early-1980s: annual production of >20mt
Renowned for high quality anthracite and coking coal
By 2005: 10 operational coal mines producing 2.5mt
Today:



shipping industry
mining industry (diamonds, then gold)
KZN one of largest coal producing regions in world in early-1900s


near present town of Dundee (“Coalopolis”, considered to be bigger than Jhb)
Only half of those still in production
Although KZN coal typically of high quality, only contributing 2% of total market
Critical matters to consider:


What caused KZN decline of last two decades?
What has changed for KZN decline to be turned around?
11
KZN Coal Production
12
Klip River Collieries – Typical Profile
Mostly coking coal/ anthracite production

Burnside Colliery:




Northfield Colliery:






Production rate: 40 000 tpm coking coal
In operation: 1903 – 2005
Life of mine production > 60mt saleable coal
Dewars Colliery:



Production rate: 30 000 tpm coking coal
In operation: 1962 – 1990s?
Durban Navigation Colliery (Durnacol):


Production rate: 55 000 tpm coking coal
In operation: 1981 – 1990s?
Indumeni Colliery:


Production rate: 40 000 tpm coking coal
In operation: 1909 – 1956
Life of mine production > 17.5mt saleable coal
Production rate: 40 000 tpm anthracite
In operation: 1978 – 1990s?
Cambrian Colliery:



Production rate: 20 000 tpm
In operation: 1903 – 1958
Life of mine production > 10mt saleable coal

KZN Coal – Geological Overview

Coal deposits:



Coal seams:




Occur in thin seams of anthracite, bituminous and coking coal
Divided into the five coalfields, namely from west to east: Klip River, Utrecht,
Vryheid, Nongoma and Somkele
Developed in the Ecca Group in the Klip River, Utrecht and Vryheid Coalfields
and Beaufort Group in the Nongoma and Somkele Coalfields
Occurrence of faulted ground conditions and dolerite dykes
Dykes either increase the quality or burn the coal (depending on proximity)
Comparison to other SA coal deposits:

Negatives


KZN coal mining more specialised due to topographic differences, structural complexities
and thin seams
Positives




Higher coal quality means substantial price premium and greater pricing power
Significant margin improvement over power station coal
Advantageously positioned relative to export markets given proximity to ports of Durban
and Richards Bay (and even Maputo an alternative)
Technological developments – new generation continuous miners and haulers
15
KZN Coal – Reasons for Decline

Difficult mining conditions and lagging technology:


Internal market adjustment:



Closure of part of Newcastle steelworks, a significant consumer
Eskom’s policy:


Availability of the other sources of cheaper, quality anthracite
Regional steel industry development:


SA coal marketing controls had prevented sale of coal outside province in
which produced
Abolition in early-1990s made “cheap” Mpumalanga coal available to nonpremium KZN coal users
Global market adjustment:


Resulted in low extraction rates and tonnages, and high mining costs
Only commissioning new (mega) power stations close to large coal resources
All of the above meant no new investment in KZN capacity, resulting in:



Old and ageing mines reaching their limits of extraction
Deteriorating safety records (eg significant gas explosion at Hlobane colliery)
Build-up of environmental liabilities (old mines)
16
KZN Coal – What has Changed ?







Global energy market dynamics
Regional economic development emphasis - coalfields to be investment focus
Recent exploration activity confirms large remaining resource base with significant
potential for development
Mining remains challenging, but economies of thinner seam mining have advanced
(price and efficiencies)
Technology – continuous thin seam miners
High grading, selective mining techniques – no more strip mining
Environmentally-friendly (dry) washing plants
What hasn’t changed?





Still close to ports, making market access simple, reliable and cost-effective
Still high up on carbon curve – ability to deliver high quality, niche market coal
Still proven track record as a major producer of coking coal and anthracite
Good knowledge about coal deposits
Infrastructure readily available (though requiring upgrading)
= AN UNIQUE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY
