Investor Presentation June 2010 Disclaimer All forward-looking statements in this presentation, other than historical facts, that address exploration activities and mining potential are forward-looking statements. Although Miranda believes the expectations expressed in such forward-looking statements are based on reasonable assumptions, such statements should not in anyway be construed as guarantees of the future performance and no assurance can be given that such expectations will be realised. Factors that could cause actual developments to differ materially from expectations include, but are not limited to, the successful conversion of the group’s old order exploration rights into new order rights, exploration results, analysis of geological, metallurgical and other technical information, the operational performance of joint venture partners, and the company’s ability to raise the necessary capital to progress its projects further. The group is subject to specific risks inherent in the exploration and mining business, and general economic and business conditions including, but not limited to, changes in the regulatory environment and other government action, fluctuations in commodity prices and exchange rates, and business and operational risk management. Reserves and Resources were compiled using the SAMREC guidance, with CPR’s still to be submitted to the JSE 2 Content Miranda Coal – Coal, the Primary Thrust Metallurgical Coal – Market Opportunity KZN Coalfields – Project Opportunity KZN Projects and Prospects Miranda Coal Operations Summary and Conclusions 3 Miranda Coal – Coal: the Primary Thrust 4 Metallurgical Coal – the Market Opportunity 5 Metallurgical Coal Market Outlook Scale: million tonnes Source: UBS Coal Sector Research, March 2010; Miranda emphasis 6 Spot HCC HCC PCI SSCC 06-2010 03-2010 12-2009 09-2009 06-2009 03-2009 12-2008 09-2008 06-2008 03-2008 12-2007 09-2007 06-2007 03-2007 12-2006 09-2006 06-2006 03-2006 12-2005 09-2005 06-2005 03-2005 12-2004 09-2004 06-2004 03-2004 12-2003 09-2003 US$ / tonne FOB (Australia) Metallurgical Coal Prices 400 350 300 250 200 150 100 50 0 Source: UBS; Platts 7 KwaZulu Natal Coalfields – the Project Opportunity 8 SA Coalfields - Location ZIMBABWE 1 BOTSWANA MESSINA 5 LOUIS TRICHARDT 4 3 NORTHERN PROVINCE ELLISRAS 2 MOCAMBIQUE PIETERSBURG TZANEEN WATERBERG BASIN POTGIETERSRUS PHALABORWA N VAALWATER SPRINGBOK FLATS BASIN 6 WARMBAD Project Area LYDENBURG MPUMALANGA NELSPRUIT RUSTENBURG 8 KOMATIPOORT GAUTENG PRETORIA NORTH WEST PROVINCE WITBANK BELFAST MAPUTO 7 JOHANNESBURG BETHAL HEIDELBERG SECUNDA VEREENIGING 11 ERMELO SWAZILAND 12 STANDERTON 13 10 HEILBRON 9 KROONSTAD MAIN KAROO BASIN WELKOM UTRECHT NEWCASTLE 14 FREESTATE 16 15 17 DUNDEE 18 KWAZULU NATAL 0 20 40 60 80100 LESOTHO RICHARDS BAY INDIAN OCEAN 1 LIMPOPO 2 WATERBERG 3 WESTERN SOUTPANSBERG 4 CENTRAL SOUTPANSBERG 5 EASTERN SOUTPANSBERG 6 SPRINGBOK FLATS 7 WITBANK 8 KANGWANE 9 O.F.S. 10 VEREENIGING - SASOLBURG 11 SOUTH RAND 12 HIGHVELD 13 EASTERN TRANSVAAL 14 KLIP RIVER 15 UTRECHT 16 VRYHEID 17 NONGOMA 18 SOMKELE 9 SA Coalfields - Geology 10 Brief History of Coal Mining in KZN Discovery of coal in KZN first documented in 1850s Commercial mining activities commenced in 1865 Initially started by the British to supply: producing 1 million tons by 1905 Total of 66 mines has operated since 1979 Early-1980s: annual production of >20mt Renowned for high quality anthracite and coking coal By 2005: 10 operational coal mines producing 2.5mt Today: shipping industry mining industry (diamonds, then gold) KZN one of largest coal producing regions in world in early-1900s near present town of Dundee (“Coalopolis”, considered to be bigger than Jhb) Only half of those still in production Although KZN coal typically of high quality, only contributing 2% of total market Critical matters to consider: What caused KZN decline of last two decades? What has changed for KZN decline to be turned around? 11 KZN Coal Production 12 Klip River Collieries – Typical Profile Mostly coking coal/ anthracite production Burnside Colliery: Northfield Colliery: Production rate: 40 000 tpm coking coal In operation: 1903 – 2005 Life of mine production > 60mt saleable coal Dewars Colliery: Production rate: 30 000 tpm coking coal In operation: 1962 – 1990s? Durban Navigation Colliery (Durnacol): Production rate: 55 000 tpm coking coal In operation: 1981 – 1990s? Indumeni Colliery: Production rate: 40 000 tpm coking coal In operation: 1909 – 1956 Life of mine production > 17.5mt saleable coal Production rate: 40 000 tpm anthracite In operation: 1978 – 1990s? Cambrian Colliery: Production rate: 20 000 tpm In operation: 1903 – 1958 Life of mine production > 10mt saleable coal 13 KZN Coal – Typical Cross-Section Underground Potential Depth: 30m to 200m Opencast Potential Strip Ratio: 9 - 2 : 1 Coal Karoo Supergroup Sediments Dolerite 14 KZN Coal – Geological Overview Coal deposits: Coal seams: Occur in thin seams of anthracite, bituminous and coking coal Divided into the five coalfields, namely from west to east: Klip River, Utrecht, Vryheid, Nongoma and Somkele Developed in the Ecca Group in the Klip River, Utrecht and Vryheid Coalfields and Beaufort Group in the Nongoma and Somkele Coalfields Occurrence of faulted ground conditions and dolerite dykes Dykes either increase the quality or burn the coal (depending on proximity) Comparison to other SA coal deposits: Negatives KZN coal mining more specialised due to topographic differences, structural complexities and thin seams Positives Higher coal quality means substantial price premium and greater pricing power Significant margin improvement over power station coal Advantageously positioned relative to export markets given proximity to ports of Durban and Richards Bay (and even Maputo an alternative) Technological developments – new generation continuous miners and haulers 15 KZN Coal – Reasons for Decline Difficult mining conditions and lagging technology: Internal market adjustment: Closure of part of Newcastle steelworks, a significant consumer Eskom’s policy: Availability of the other sources of cheaper, quality anthracite Regional steel industry development: SA coal marketing controls had prevented sale of coal outside province in which produced Abolition in early-1990s made “cheap” Mpumalanga coal available to nonpremium KZN coal users Global market adjustment: Resulted in low extraction rates and tonnages, and high mining costs Only commissioning new (mega) power stations close to large coal resources All of the above meant no new investment in KZN capacity, resulting in: Old and ageing mines reaching their limits of extraction Deteriorating safety records (eg significant gas explosion at Hlobane colliery) Build-up of environmental liabilities (old mines) 16 KZN Coal – What has Changed ? Global energy market dynamics Regional economic development emphasis - coalfields to be investment focus Recent exploration activity confirms large remaining resource base with significant potential for development Mining remains challenging, but economies of thinner seam mining have advanced (price and efficiencies) Technology – continuous thin seam miners High grading, selective mining techniques – no more strip mining Environmentally-friendly (dry) washing plants What hasn’t changed? Still close to ports, making market access simple, reliable and cost-effective Still high up on carbon curve – ability to deliver high quality, niche market coal Still proven track record as a major producer of coking coal and anthracite Good knowledge about coal deposits Infrastructure readily available (though requiring upgrading) = AN UNIQUE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY 17 Miranda Coal – KZN Projects & Prospects 18 KZN Projects Locality Maps 19 KZN Projects – 9 Project Areas F G H I E D A C B 20 Project Overview Project Ha Area SAMREC Recon tons Status Mining Projects (MR granted1; appl. accepted2) Sesikhona1 884 Dannhauser 17.4mt Measured 3.6mt Mining contractor appointed; Mining plan finalised; Ground breaking scheduled: Jun-10; Off-take agreement being finalised Uithoek2 2,502 Glencoe - Measured 6.7mt SLP being finalised; Mining right in 2010Q3; Production in 2011H1 Burnside2 4,540 Glencoe - Inferred 16.6mt Indicated 18.9mt Contiguous with Uithoek; Third project in pipeline; EMP accepted; Production by 2011H2 17.4mt 45.8mt Cum total 7,926 Development Projects (Prospecting Rights granted1; appl. accepted2; appl. in process3) Majestic1 816 Dannhauser - Inferred 5.4mt Dwala1 1,658 Dannhauser 5.0mt - Boschhoek1 6,608 Glencoe - Indicated 52.3mt Wasbank1 2,135 Glencoe 1.5mt - 6.5mt 57.7mt Cum total 11,217 Field exploration stage; Production by 2012 Contiguous with Sesikhona; Field exploration Second phase exploration; Production by 2012/13 Field exploration stage; Production by 2013 Exploration Projects (Prospecting Rights granted1; appl. accepted2; appl. in process3) Yarl1 Learydale1 1,216 Dannhauser 54.3mt Inferred 16.9mt Field exploration stage 253 Dannhauser 44.3mt - Field exploration stage Frisbee1 2,383 Utrecht - - Exploration stage Alston1 3,070 Utrecht - - Exploration stage Planet Waves (x5)1 9,558 Utrecht - - Desktop geology and application In process (x20)1,2,3 51,989 Various - - Desktop geology and application Cum total 68,469 98.6mt 16.9mt Total 87,612 122.5mt 120.4mt 21 A – DANNHAUSER PROJECT AREA 22 Dannhauser Project Area – Overview Summary (work done to date): 1 Sesikhona MCoal interest: 72% 2 G/Geloof & 3,4 Dwala MCoal interest: 65% Area: 884ha Status: Mining Right Samrec Proven Res: 3.6mt Recon.
