The Arboretum’s roots reach back to

began developing cold-hardy apple varieties.
Currently, 150 fruit and ornamental plant
introductions include azaleas, dogwoods,
Frontenac wine grape, Haralson and
Honeycrisp apples. The Minnesota Landscape
Arboretum was founded in 1958 by Lake
Minnetonka Garden Club, Minneapolis Men’s
and Women’s Garden Club, University of
Minnesota, Minnesota State Horticultural
Society and other community supporters.
Andersen Horticultural Library and the Leon
Snyder building opened in 1974. The Oswald
Visitor Center, inspired by Edwin Lundie
design, opened in 2005.
