Dear Norfolk Collegiate Community,
As I reflect on the past school year, it is evident that 2014-15 was a special
year for Norfolk Collegiate. In 2011, we launched an ambitious strategic vision
for the future of our school, and I’m pleased to say that during the 2014-15
school year we fulfilled those commitments made during our last strategic
planning cycle. We have been diligently working to fulfill that vision, with each
year’s effort building upon the last, and each step strengthened by the next.
One such effort, the effective use of instructional technology, has been integrated
across all divisions. From iPads® and SMART® Boards to 3D printers and Google
Apps for Education, cutting edge technology throughout our curriculum truly prepares our students for the
ever-changing world. None of these efforts would have been possible without our generous donors and
volunteers who share our vision for the future. At the 2015 auction, our Fund-An-Item received more than
$18,000 in support from our community within minutes. Those funds allowed our faculty and staff to
participate in the first EdTech Google Summit, which was hosted on the Norfolk Collegiate campus in January.
We were selected as the host site by this internationally known consortium because of our progressive,
effective approach to classroom technology. It is extremely exciting to be part of a community that recognizes
the importance of these efforts and wants to support our teachers as they grow as professionals.
Through the generous support from William and Betty Jones, we launched the Jones Humanities Speaker
Series. Betty’s 30 years of service as a teacher, director of college counseling and director of guidance,
touched the lives of generations of Norfolk Collegiate students. The series included poets, authors and
historians, bringing evening audiences from throughout Hampton Roads to our campus. Betty created the
series in memory of another faculty member, Louise M. Vermillion, who launched the Norfolk Collegiate
humanities class in the 1960s and continued to teach it until the early 1980s. As a teacher of English and
history, Betty always strove to go beyond historical facts or the close analysis of a literary text to evoke a
broader understanding of human nature in the students and the larger community.
The 2014-15 school year culminated in our beginning construction of the new athletic complex. This multimillion dollar project includes two artificial turf fields and state-of-the art lights. When the complex opened
in September of 2015, it became a public symbol of the commitment we have to providing the best
facilities for our students, whether they be in the classroom, on the stage or on the athletic fields under
the lights. As we continue to solicit donor support, we know that we will reach our goal of $2.6 million.
We ended the school year with increased giving from our alumni, boasting higher than the national
average for independent schools, and we were poised to begin the new school year with increased
enrollment. We would not be celebrating so many successes without our supporters, who see this
institution continue to push itself every year to deliver a program of excellence for the students.
Thank you to our generous donors and our volunteers, whose countless hours ensured that these
initiatives and projects became a reality.
Respectfully,
Scott G. Kennedy
Headmaster and President

It has been a remarkable year as your new
board chairman at Norfolk Collegiate. Since
I am an alumnus, my passion for the school
began when I first walked through the doors
as a young student. Firsthand, I have
experienced the warm, challenging and
supportive environment that our teachers
and administrators provide every day to
encourage the individuality of each student. Over the years, that
environment has remained, both academically and physically for our
Oaks. Our school has not only expanded our fine arts program through
the Meredith Center and evolved technology through our 1:1 iPad®
program, but we have even broken ground on our new athletic fields.
And all within five years! Our students, faculty and the community are continuing to experience
the benefits of having the Meredith Center on the middle and upper
school campus. From musicals and theatrical productions to gallery
exhibitions, the arts are a thriving part of Norfolk Collegiate. And
now, thanks to our generous donors, Norfolk Collegiate will enjoy an
enhanced athletic complex for years to come.
Through the Turf Fields and Lights Campaign, chaired by former Board
Chairman Sandy Harris, our athletic program is being transformed,
and the benefit is not only for current and future students, but also the
greater Hampton Roads area. These feats are only possible because
of you — our parents, trustees, alumni and volunteers — who
continuously support our school, teachers and students. Year after
year and event after event, you prove that Norfolk Collegiate’s potential
is limitless. I am proud to present this philanthropy report, which
highlights all the accomplishments that our donors have made possible
for the students and faculty, who are empowered to achieve success
by your passion and generosity. Thank you for your continual dedication
and commitment to Norfolk Collegiate. Because of your generosity, we
can ensure that our school remains on the cutting edge of education,
inspiring success. I look forward to working alongside the Board of
Trustees, Headmaster Scott Kennedy and the amazing faculty to see
what we can do in 2016. After 67 years in Hampton Roads, we have
only just begun.
Go OAKS!

Turf Fields & Lights Campaign
In May 2015, Norfolk Collegiate broke ground on the next phase of capital improvements, the $2.6
million Turf Fields and Lights Campaign. Chaired by former Chairman of the Board and alumni parent
Henry U. Harris III, the campaign renovated the athletic fields with two 70x110 yard, competition-sized,
pre-lined artificial turf fields, which now allow our student-athletes to practice and play in all weather
conditions. A batting cage, which is being added soon, also will provide a designated hitting area
for our softball and baseball teams. Not only do the fields accommodate multiple sports on one field,
but the six state-of-the-art Musco® lights provide access to the fields year-round.
The benefit of investing in new turf fields and lights is two-fold, with improvements impacting every
current and future student at Norfolk Collegiate, as well as the greater Hampton Roads area.
Norfolk Collegiate is still looking for generous donors to help complete our campaign. Please contact
Director of Development Nicole Pellegrino at 757.480.2348 or [email protected].

Endowment Fund Award
The prestigious Jo Melchor Hackney and John H. Hackney Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund Award was
presented to Catherine Thomson ’94, Alan Stell and Ashley Billman, for use in the 2015-16 school
year in recognition of their dedication and excellence in teaching at Norfolk Collegiate.
Mr. John H. Hackney Jr., former trustee of Norfolk Collegiate, has been a member of the Collegiate
community since 1984, when his granddaughter, Cara Paige Oxenham ’96, entered first grade.
He and his wife, the late Jo Melchor Hackney, developed an appreciation for the small class sizes,
dedicated teachers and high quality facilities at Norfolk Collegiate. Mr. Hackney established the
Jo Melchor Hackney and John H. Hackney Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund in 2005 to provide three
annual merit awards to honor one teacher each from the lower, middle and upper schools.
These professional development awards are designed to recognize teachers who demonstrate a
“commitment to a career in teaching, exemplify excellence in the classroom and influence other
teachers by example.”

LOWER SCHOOL: Catherine Thomson
First-grade teacher Catherine Thomson ’94 has worked tremendously hard to help
transform our lower school literacy program. With Thomson’s extensive early childhood background, she was a driving force behind aligning the spelling program so that each
child would learn how to spell in a consistent and age appropriate manner. For the past two
years, she has conducted professional development training for all lower school teachers.
Due to her dedicated efforts, the lower school’s language arts teachers can track the
students’ progress throughout their lower school careers thus creating more capable
readers and writers for years to come. She has accomplished all of this while also being
one of the strongest and most compassionate classroom teachers, organizing such favorite
children’s events such as the first-grade’s Egypt Day and Mother’s Tea, as well as the
kindergarten through fifth-grade Shamrock Final Mile that benefits Operation Smile. Her
professional, kindhearted attitude towards peers, parents and most importantly, children,
is simply outstanding.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Alan Stell
Perennially one of the most popular teachers with middle school students – Alan Stell truly
inspires students to love science. He is a thoughtful advisor who contributes to middle
school students’ overall growth and development by partnering with our school nurse/
health department chair to teach seventh-grade students about their bodies. He truly
embraces the role of the independent school faculty member in terms of engaging in
multiple areas of school life. In addition to teaching science in both middle and upper
schools, he is the program head of the girls’ softball team, department chair of the science
department and middle school honor council co-sponsor.
UPPER SCHOOL: Ashley Billman
Though only in her third year of teaching, Ashley Billman has demonstrated a level of
engagement and professionalism rarely found even in more experienced teachers.
Billman has willingly embraced developing new senior seminars (including Introduction
to Southern Literature and Introduction to Short Fiction). She has been a dedicated advisor
to our Honor Council for two of her three years with us and has coached junior varsity
girls’ lacrosse. In addition, she dedicates many hours to assist seniors during the college
application process. Billman used her award to attend the prestigious summer professional
development program, the “Smithsonian Summer Institute: Teaching the Humanities
through Art.”
Oak Heritage Society
The Oak Heritage Society was established to recognize our friends who have chosen
to include Norfolk Collegiate in their long-term gift planning or to establish permanently
endowed funds. Members of the society have made provisions to support Norfolk Collegiate
through charitable trusts and annuities, retirement plans, bequests, life-income gifts, gifts
of insurance policies or other forms of deferred giving.

Annual Fund:
Yearly Giving, Daily Impact
Every year, Norfolk Collegiate families, alumni, faculty and staff,
and friends join together to support the Annual Fund to ensure the
financial health and prosperity of our school. The Annual Fund
includes unrestricted gifts that enhance academic, athletic and
extracurricular programs and provide necessities not funded by
tuition dollars. We thank our committed Annual Fund donors
who help to lead our program to new heights.
Annual Fund Volunteers
Norfolk Collegiate would like to thank all the volunteers who give
voice to why annual giving is important to our school. We are
most appreciative of their commitment and support of our annual
giving campaign.
One way our Annual Fund volunteers help is the phone-a-thon, where
they help create and foster positive relationships with alumni, parents
and friends of the school. Callers also take this opportunity to confirm

grandparents provide inspiration.
All have established a strong tradition
of support for Norfolk Collegiate.
Daily Impact
•Professional development
opportunities give our faculty the
tools they need to energize them
and their classrooms.
•Technology and software upgrades
prepare our students for an
increasingly technology-based
society. Norfolk Collegiate has
made an investment in iPads®,
iMacs®, SMART technology, apps,
3D printers, robotics, coding
software and more.

Collegiate education possible for
talented and deserving students.
•The freshman leadership retreat
teaches teambuilding skills through
physical challenges.
•Support for more than 50
athletic teams gives our students
a competitive edge.

1963 Society
Established to provide much-deserved recognition to those donors whom the school can count on
to contribute to the Annual Fund every year, members of this new society must give for three or more
consecutive years. Consecutive gifts—no matter the size—are crucial to the success of the school
and its students. These gifts provide a powerful foundation each year from which Norfolk Collegiate
can support critical aspects of the student experience.
Named for the year in which the Carolton Oaks School graduated its first class of seniors, the 1963
Society has helped our institution flourish and grow in educational offerings, extracurricular activities
and facilities. It is because of generous supporters, particularly those who have invested in our school
year after year, that Norfolk Collegiate and our dynamic students have enjoyed continued success.

Mathas Professional
Development Grants
The Mathas Professional Development Grants were created in 2014
when Ted and Keryn Mathas expanded their annual donation to promote
faculty growth in the areas outlined in the School’s Characteristics
of Professional Excellence. The Mathas Grants provide funding for
professional activities that will increase our faculty’s expertise in current
standards and best practices in their disciplines, project-based learning,
technology integration and other identified areas of focus for the
school. The grants also support faculty summer projects that will
transform a program or area of the curriculum in a significant manner
and will be replicable across the wider school community. The first
Mathas Professional Development Grants were awarded in the 2014-15 school year. Recipients’
projects demonstrate their committment to our characteristics of Professional Excellence
by demonstrating:
•a strong commitment to understanding and accommodating student
individuality and needs;
•a lifelong and passionate dedication to learning and to sharing that learning
with colleagues and students alike;
•a thirst for honor and integrity in all aspects of their lives;
•a dynamic teaching method that embraces innovation and creativity; and
•a personal mission to contribute to the school,
its students and its vision.
The inaugural Keryn and Ted Mathas Professional
Development Grants allowed seven of our teachers
to research and develop the following projects:
•Lower School teachers Robyn Maus and Lolita
Kraft’s “Lower School Book of the Month Club”
funded their travel to the National Council of
Teachers of English Conference in Washington
to research best practices for developing and
integrating peer-mediated book groups and
to design and implement this program at our
lower school.
•Lower school teachers Beth Collado, Ashley
James ’94 and Catherine Thomson’s ’94 “Reading

Resources for Impactful Teaching” allowed James
and Thomson to travel to the International Reading
Association Conference in St. Louis to research
developmentally appropriate supplemental texts
and, with Collado, to design teaching materials
and train lower school teachers to integrate these
resources into their reading instruction.
•Upper school teachers Paige Solomon and
Jared Wilson’s “Improving Historical Thinking
Skills through Source-based Instruction” funded
their participation in the Library of Congress
Summer Teaching Institute of the same name.
Based on that experience, they have designed
professional development sessions that will be
shared with our middle and upper school
teachers at future professional development
events, and they recently received a Library of
Congress grant to extend the reach of this project
through collaboration with Norfolk Public Schools
and local historical and arts organizations.
In addition, the recipients of the 2014-15 Keryn
and Ted Mathas Awards for Professional Excellence,
awarded at our opening faculty session in August,
are as follows:

Library Fund
The Library Fund received $4,526 from the lower school birthday book program to support the
library media center. Purchases made possible by the 2014-15 Library Fund include:
•Hardback books for the lower school library, each with a dedication plate honoring the
birthday boy or girl. This is an ongoing tradition at the lower school.
•Digital books for the library collection, which may be checked out and read online.
•Subscriptions to online resources such as TumbleBooks, an online talking and animated book
collection for elementary school students that features engaging stories and accompanying
curricular materials, and BrainPop, which includes animated movies, learning games, interactive
quizzes, primary source activities, concept mapping and more. These popular resources can be
shown in teachers’ classrooms on the SMART Boards for an even more exciting literacy activity.

Booster Club
Our student-athletes’ success is due in part to the generosity of our Booster Club donors. In
addition to providing essential new equipment, experiences and awards, the Booster Club’s goal
is to boost the spirit of fans and players alike. With strong coaches, passionate fans and talented
athletes, support from generous donors helps to keep the Oak spirit strong.
A strong Booster Club allows us to:
•Fund one-time special athletic purchases, such as last year’s championship banner
and TCIS school banners and plyometric boxes.
•Celebrate and recognize teams and athletes who strive for and achieve excellence
through our awards ceremonies.
•Fund overnight travel for teams competing in state tournaments outside of our area –
a benefit rarely offered at schools, and one we feel is important to encourage
competitive athletics.

Norfolk Collegiate
Educational Foundation
The Norfolk Collegiate Education Foundation was established in December 1997 for the sole
purpose of providing educational assistance for academically qualified students to receive a quality
education through an independent school. The Norfolk Collegiate Educational Foundation is proud
to participate in two tax credit programs offered by the Virginia Department of Education: The
Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) and the Education Improvement Scholarships Tax
Credits (EISTC – available in 2015-16). In addition, companies and individuals who pay Virginia
state income taxes receive a state income tax credit equal to 65 percent of their donation.

How does this program work?
Individual Donor: Tax credits are awarded at the rate of 65 percent of the donation value.
A minimum donation of $500 (cash or marketable securities) is required to be eligible. A maximum
limit of $50,000 in tax credits per individual or married couple per taxable year will be imposed
if all tax credits are awarded in a fiscal year. Tax credits not used carry over for five years.
Example: Give a $1,000 cash gift to the Norfolk Collegiate Educational Foundation and the
state will send a $650 voucher for Virginia state taxes.
Business Donor: Tax credits may be available to a business making a minimum contribution
of $615.39. Tax credits for business donors are awarded at a rate of 65 percent of the
donation value.
How do I contribute? Contact the Office of Development at 757.480.2348.
Determining the effect of making a donation for tax credits on a donor’s tax liability is the sole
responsibility of the donor. Before making a donation, or when tax-related questions occur,
donors are encouraged to seek advice from their tax accountants or other tax advisors.
Deadline is June 30.

Jefferson Challenge
Norfolk Collegiate thanks the Class of 2015, who displayed the true
spirit of the Jefferson Challenge by having 100 percent participation
in the Annual Fund. Established in 2002 with help from Mr. A. Kenneth
Scribner Jr., the challenge is designed to promote a spirit of philanthropy
among the senior class and encourage them to begin their legacy of
giving back to Norfolk Collegiate. The program kicked-off in October
2014 with a trip on the American Rover and consisted of several
fundraisers throughout the year, including the senior T-shirt sale,
seminars and, new for the Class of 2015, graduation yard signs.
The Class of 2015 also raised more than $1,500 to purchase a seat
in the Take-A-Seat campaign for the Meredith Center for the Arts.

Alumni Awards Breakfast
On March 31, 2015, hundreds of students, alumni and friends of the school joined together for
the annual Alumni Awards Breakfast. Sponsored by Norfolk Collegiate’s Alumni Association, the
breakfast celebrated Don Chapman ’72, Anne Claywell ’88, Brittany McPherson ’06 and Ryan
Samuel ’05 for their contributions to the school and community in the Meredith Center for the Arts.
Chapman, the president at Uncas Consulting and senior strategist at Blue Stone Strategy Group,
was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award. This award is the alumni association’s highest
honor for a graduate who through a value-oriented life, has made a significant contribution to the
betterment of society.
Claywell, who currently serves as Norfolk Collegiate’s director of academic advising and counseling,
was awarded the Alumni Service Award. The award honors a graduate who demonstrates exceptional
leadership, devotion and service for the betterment of the school.
McPherson and Samuel both received the Young Alumni
Achievement Award, which honors alumni who graduated
within the last 10 years and made significant contributions
to the community or their profession.
After accepting his award, Chapman delivered a keynote
address that focused on how even if the road is not clearly
marked, people can make the path look however they
want it to, as he did.

Spring Soiree & Annual Auction
`
Norfolk Collegiate’s biggest party of the year, the “Spring Soiree & Annual Auction,” was
held on April 18 in the Watt-Baker and Middle School Gymnasiums. With hundreds of silent
auction items ranging from children’s games and toys to home furnishings and jewelry,
there was something for everyone. The additions of the wine grab and the candy buffet
were guest favorites that evening, as were the exciting live auction packages. The package
with the highest winning bid was “Saturday Night Live in New York City,” which raised $4,800!
Our biggest fundraiser of the school year was a great success, bringing in net proceeds
of $100,000.

Golf Classic
With the help of some of our dedicated alumni, as well as our Board of Trustees, Norfolk
Collegiate’s annual Golf Classic, which supports the Dr. John W. Baker Jr. Memorial
Scholarship, was held on June 9 at Bayville Golf Club and raised net proceeds of $35,000.
Our field of 102 golfers enjoyed a gorgeous day out on the greens, along with delicious meals
for lunch and dinner, cold drinks throughout the day and amazing prizes for our first-, second-,
and third-place foursomes from each flight thanks to Bryan Jackson ’94 of TaylorMade Golf.

Ways to Give to
Norfolk Collegiate
Most people do not realize that there are a number of ways to give other than cash. And many of these
ways can be more efficient, more beneficial and have greater tax advantages than cash. It does not
matter whether the gift is for annual giving, the capital campaign or the endowment. By utilizing any of
the methods described here, you may find that you can give more and save more, which is a valuable
combination for everyone.
Gifts of Securities
A gift of stock you have owned for a number of years can have tax advantages for you. If you have owned
the stock for more than a year and it has increased in value, its outright gift to Norfolk Collegiate would
mean a significant tax savings. You are not required to pay capital gains tax on the appreciation, so the
actual cost to you may be less.
Life Income Gifts
Stock, real estate and other investments that have been accumulated over a lifetime are often used
as an ongoing source of income in retirement. One way to give is to transfer these investment assets
to a “charitable remainder trust.” The income from the trust would still be paid to you or to a beneficiary
for life or a term of years, after which the assets would be distributed outright to Norfolk Collegiate.
There are tax advantages to such an arrangement since you are making a gift to the school through
a charitable trust. In addition, since the trust can sell the gifted assets and reinvest the proceeds
in higher yielding assets without paying capital gains tax, the amount of income received by you or
your beneficiary may actually increase.
Gifts of Real Estate
A residence, vacation home, rental property, farm acreage or vacant lot may have appreciated in value
through the years so that its sale would generate a sizeable capital gains tax. By making a gift of this
property, you avoid the capital gains tax and at the same time receive a charitable deduction for the full
fair market value of the property. It is also possible to structure the gift so that you or your beneficiaries
can continue to use the property during your lifetime.
Gifts of Life Insurance
Life insurance offers two ways to provide a donor with a significant charitable deduction and benefit
Norfolk Collegiate at the same time. One way is to purchase a new policy and make the school the
beneficiary. The second is to make a gift of a policy that you no longer need. To receive this deduction,
you simply designate Norfolk Collegiate as both the owner and the beneficiary of the life insurance
policy. It is important to check with your life insurance agent for details.
Wills and Bequests
Including Norfolk Collegiate in your estate plan is a simple way to remember the school. It involves no
loss of capital or income for you and may have positive tax benefits for your heirs. Many donors find that
a bequest is a tremendous way to supplement their lifetime gifts to the school.
Please note that you should contact your attorney, accountant, tax advisor or insurance agent for additional information or assistance in utilizing
one or more of these giving strategies. nicole pellegrino, director of development, is also available to offer more details on these options.
