CCNE Board of Commissioners
A Message from the Board Chair
When the Commission on Collegiate
Nursing Education (CCNE) was established in 1996, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Board
of Directors appointed a Steering
Committee to guide CCNE’s development. This committee showed great
insight in establishing a set of values, or principles, to guide CCNE’s
work. These values, which were
subsequently adopted by the founding Board of Commissioners elected
to govern CCNE, have since been
incorporated into every edition of
CCNE’s accreditation standards for
baccalaureate and graduate nursing
education programs and post-baccalaureate nurse residency programs.
The values are front and center in
CCNE’s work: Institutions rely on the
values when developing programs
that serve the needs of their com-
munities of interest. On-site evaluation teams reflect on them when
considering program compliance
with the accreditation standards.
The CCNE staff ensures that the values are incorporated throughout the
Commission’s operations and evaluation functions. Committee and
Board meetings begin with a review
of the values to ensure that they
are considered during the decisionmaking process. At every opportunity, CCNE seeks
feedback from its community of
interest, for example, by inviting
feedback about workshops on writing self-studies, soliciting comments
on proposed accreditation standards
and procedures, and surveying program administrators and on-site
evaluators regarding the accreditation review experience. Consistent-
ly, feedback received indicates that
the CCNE values are being upheld.
On the following pages, you will
find a review of CCNE’s activities
in Fiscal Year 2013 (July 1, 2012
— June 30, 2013). Comments and
feedback from CCNE’s community of
interest are featured, showing how
the Commission’s core activities
embrace the CCNE values.
Thanks to you — our constituent
programs, volunteer on-site evaluators, committee and Board members, national nursing organizations,
and other key stakeholders — I am
confident that CCNE has had another successful year.

“The changes in the standards are
appropriate and timely given the changes
in both the nursing education and
practice environments. The editorial
changes made in the final revision
improve clarity and flow of the document
which should be very beneficial for the
programs when writing the self-study
document as well as to site evaluators.”

Standards revision
In 2012—2013, CCNE undertook an
extensive process to review and
revise its accreditation standards
for baccalaureate and graduate
programs. To this end, the CCNE
Standards Committee was created
by the CCNE Board of Commissioners. (See a listing of the committee members on page 29.) The
multi-step review process included
a solicitation of input from CCNE’s
community of interest, including
administrators and faculty of CCNEaccredited programs, practicing
nurses, students, nursing organizations, state agencies, and higher
education organizations, among
others. Based on the comments received, edits were proposed to the
accreditation standards, and the
draft revisions were broadly disseminated for review and comment.
Again, CCNE’s community of interest was asked to provide feedback,
and CCNE conducted forums around
the country, in conjunction with
nursing education conferences, in
order to apprise constituents of the
process and solicit input.
After extensive review of the input
received from the community, the
Standards Committee presented
the CCNE Board of Commissioners
with its final recommended revisions, and in May 2013, the CCNE
Board approved the Standards for
Accreditation of Baccalaureate and
Graduate Programs (Standards).
The 2013 Standards updates the
professional nursing standards and
guidelines nursing education programs are required to incorporate
into their curriculum. Additionally,
the 2013 Standards positions CCNE
to begin accrediting post-graduate
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
(APRN) certificate programs, in accordance with the Consensus Model
for APRN Regulation: Licensure,
Accreditation, Certification &
Education (July 7, 2008). While
revisions were made throughout the
Standards, constituents will most
readily notice the changes made to
Standard IV: Program Effectiveness:
Assessment and Achievement of
Program Outcomes. Standard IV has
been reworked to simplify the manner in which programs present their
systematic program evaluation processes and outcomes. Noticeably,
student achievement requirements
related to program completion,
licensure and certification, and
employment are now individually
addressed, and CCNE expectations
related to these outcomes are specifically defined.
The success of the standards
revision process is a result of the
substantive engagement of our
community of interest and the tireless work of our volunteers. Thank
you to everyone who participated
in the process.

Support to accredited programs
Throughout the year, CCNE representatives work diligently to provide
ongoing support to programs seeking
initial accreditation and to accredited programs. To this end, CCNE deploys its staff and volunteers to lead
educational workshops and conduct
forums. These events are held in
conjunction with previously planned
conferences or meetings in order to
capture as large an audience as possible and to reduce costs associated
with attendance.
In FY 2013, some of the learning
sessions provided by CCNE include:
Workshops on Writing Self-Studies
[American Association of Colleges
of Nursing’s (AACN) Spring Annual
4
Meeting and Fall Semiannual
Meeting]; Accreditation Standards
Forums (AACN Fall Semiannual
Meeting, Master’s Education
Conference, and Doctoral Education
Conference); and The Value of
Accrediting Your Nurse Residency
Program (University HealthSystem
Consortium/AACN Nurse Residency
Program Meeting).
Of course, staff provides support
to baccalaureate and graduate
programs as well as post-baccalaureate nurse residency programs
on a daily basis. CCNE values its
relationship with its constituent
programs and strives to provide the
best customer service possible.

“This accreditation process was a wonderful
opportunity for our program to learn about and
develop an ongoing evaluation process that will
keep us up to date and on the cutting edge of
nursing education. We appreciate the collaborative
support of the visiting team and the staff of CCNE
as we move forward in our journey.”

cost-effective initiatives & Program enhancements
CCNE understands that programs
have a finite pool of resources,
and the CCNE Board and staff have
worked to ensure that CCNE operates in a fiscally responsible manner. To this end, CCNE’s training
opportunities are provided at little
to no cost. Over the past several
years, in fact, CCNE has significantly
reduced the registration fee for the
Workshop on Writing Self-Studies to
encourage participation and minimize program costs. CCNE breakout
sessions or forums held in conjunction with other conferences do not
require a separate registration fee.
And, most notably, the fees associated with pursuing CCNE accreditation
have not risen in 3 years, and the
annual fees have either remained
flat or risen at a modest rate.
In FY 2013, CCNE completed the
launch of the CCNE Online Community, a web based tool that facilitates the scheduling of on-site
evaluations; enables the exchange
of documents related to the accreditation review, while eliminating the
requirement that programs submit
printed copies of the accreditation
self-study document to the CCNE
office; and manages communications among program officials,
evaluators, and CCNE staff. This
move greatly reduces the fiscal and
natural resources expended by programs in the accreditation process.
Additionally, all other reports and
materials submitted to CCNE are
delivered electronically, in support
of AACN and CCNE’s environmental
sustainability initiatives.
Periodically, CCNE selects new evaluators to ensure that CCNE maintains
a broad pool of accreditation reviewers. In May 2013, CCNE trained 111
new evaluators for their roles as accreditation reviewers for baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs.
Participants were selected following
a competitive application process,
and those nurses chosen represented
both practice and education. The
new evaluators were provided an
historical overview of accreditation and reviewed the CCNE history,
mission, values, and goals. They
were also trained on their roles and
responsibilities as CCNE evaluators
and completed an in-depth review
of the CCNE accreditation standards.
Congratulations to those selected to
participate as on-site evaluators.

Branding
In January 2013, CCNE introduced
its new logo and brand concept.
The new logo represents CCNE’s
pre-eminence in the field of nursing
accreditation and captures the spirit
of the nation’s growing reliance on
the nursing profession. At the same
time, the rising star used in the
graphic draws on the shooting star
used in CCNE’s original brand, which
symbolized CCNE’s emergence in the
field and its leadership as a new accrediting body. The star in the new
logo emerges from the “C” and “N”
symbolizing CCNE’s support for higher education in nursing (Collegiate)
and CCNE’s responsiveness to the
needs of the profession (Nursing).
8
The new logo is accompanied by
a modern primary and secondary
color palette. The new color palette
embraces the boldness required of
today’s students, nurse residents,
practitioners, faculty, and administrators, while also paying homage to
the gold star in CCNE’s original logo.
The brand concept includes a new
and energetic accreditation seal
that CCNE’s accredited programs
may use in their print and electronic media. The seal is a symbol to an
accredited program’s constituents
that the program is worthy of public
approbation and has been successfully reviewed according to nationally recognized standards.

“Congratulations on your new logo.
I like it a lot; it is very distinctive and
stylish. CCNE is a ‘star’ operation!”
