engineers unfamiliar with limit

for general construction in steel.
The text is based on the modern
limit state approach to design.
The author has dealt with
topics such as materials,
concepts, loading, analysis,
design, and fire and corrosion
resistance. He also elaborately
covers areas such as the
properties of steel, types of steel
structures, important areas of
structural steel technology,
bolted connections, welded
connections, design of trusses,
design of plate girders and
design of beam-columns.
Each chapter features solved

and practice problems as well

Dr Subramanian is a consulting
engineer living in Maryland,
USA. He obtained PhD from IIT
Madras and has over 30 years of
professional experience in the
fields of teaching, research and
consultancy. He is also a fellow
of several professional bodies.
He is also the chief executive of
Computer Design Consultants,
India. He has served as a
consultant to many leading
organizations in India and has
designed several multi-storey
concrete buildings, steel towers,
industrial buildings, steel space
frames and structures using
cold-formed steel sections.
Dr Subramanian has
authored several books and
technical papers published
in international and Indian
journals and conferences. He
has also been a reviewer for
many Indian and international
journals.
The U.N. Report on State of the
World’s Cities 2012 / 13 narrates
a variety of social and institutional
innovations on worldwide (Chapter
3.2). Excerpts are given for readers’
view.
Many factors stand in the way
of urban innovation, especially
in developing countries. Not all
these factors have been sufficiently
identified, understood or addressed.
Still, seven major types of
deficiency seem to play significant
roles: (i) poor physical and
knowledge infrastructure; (ii) an
absence of appropriate innovation
policies (due to lack of interest
or understanding); (iii) limited
financial resources; (iv) weak local
institutions (formal or informal);
(v) inadequacy of human resources
(number and qualification of
personnel); (vi) lack of stakeholder
participation and coordination in
the elaboration and implementation
of innovation policies; and (vii)
poor incentives (where any). In
other cases, the problems instead
lie in technology transfer and poor
adaptation to local know-how. But
then ‘home-made’ innovations, too,
can be poorly related to local and
national conditions, or overlook
the needs of the underprivileged,
when they fail ‘to take into due
consideration the plurality of
knowledge and technological
options’ that are locally available.
The city of Johannesburg has
adopted an innovative governance
model to rebuild local government
and improve service delivery.
Bangalore, too, has launched
technology-based public-private
experiments in governance in a bid
to deliver better public services. In
Latin America and the Caribbean,
Rosario, just like Santo Domingo,
has introduced significant
institutional innovations in terms
of participatory governance. In
Nairobi, the private sector has
launched a new Internet/ cellphonebased virtual payment platform
enabling low-and middle-income
residents to conduct e-commerce
transactions and even to pay school
fees.
Many other social and institutional
innovations involve the creation
of new systems and models to
meet the needs of underserved
populations in a more efficient,
effective, and sustainable manner.
In Tehran, the scope of the WHOUN-Habitat ‘Urban HEART’
Programme has been extended
to assess equity under not just
the health dimension but also a
more general social perspective.
Shenzhen has created a multilevel
social security system that includes
basic social insurance, poverty
insurance, compensation for
job seekers, and special care for
patients and the disabled. These
innovative schemes redistribute
the benefits of prosperity among
migrant workers (up to 15 per
cent of Shenzhen’s population)
under the form of social security,
working conditions, rights,
education and access to public
services. Chongqing has created
investment companies to mobilize
public capital in order to accelerate
construction of infrastructure
and public facilities, using a
combination of innovative funding
mechanisms: taxes, land reserves,
fees, and government bonds.
Apart from new, dedicated
schemes, social and institutional
innovation can take the form of
enlightened rules or legislation. In
Cebu, the Philippines, an ordinance
now encourages those employed
in outsourced business processing
services to enroll in (post)graduate
studies, in a bid to expand the pool
of highly skilled people.
Rosario, Argentina, has declared
itself a ‘Human Rights City’,
with a commitment to openness,
transparency and accountability.
Some other institutional innovations
connect urban planning and design
with the use of social public
space. In Colombia, Bogota has
improved many diverse public
spaces (sidewalks, public parks and
libraries) in a bid to rebuild social
cohesion. Singapore’s ‘Skyway’ is a
spectacular aerial walkway among
giant man-made trees that collect
rainwater and generate solar energy,
and is an invitation to view the
city from a different perspective.
In Korea, the municipality of
Seoul resorts to urban design to
improve the efficiency and enhance
the attractiveness of the city with
innovative projects, such as the
‘Han River Renaissance’ scheme
and the ‘City in the Park’ initiative.
Innovations introduce
knowledge, products, processes
and programmes that change the
ways of using resources, or even
social attitudes and preferences.
Innovations lie at the core of all
economic processes and they
contribute to knowledge generation
and information flows. Innovations
of a technological nature have
added value and helped transform
the urban space (e.g., connectivity,
proximity and distance, outsourcing
of innovations take place mainly in,
major metropolitan centres.
There are many agendas for
Chennai so far stated by the civic
body. Now, the worshipful mayor
of Chennai started discussing with
the citizen’s forums which can be
a starting point for bringing social
and institutional innovations to our
city.

Buy first home by March 31
to avail benefit
It would be advantageous if
first time home buyers complete
the formalities of purchasing
home by March 31. This would
pave way for availing of the
additional tax benefit against the
interest paid on a home loan.
The exemption available to
taxpayers will lapse in the
current financial year. This
which enables them to reduce
the interest paid from the
taxable income. The reduction
can be up to Rs 1.5 lakh under
section 24 of the Income Tax
Act and up to Rs 1 lakh under
section 80EE against the interest
paid on home loan.
The benefit under section 80EE
can be availed only to buy the
first house of a value of Rs 40
lakh, provided the maximum
loan amount is Rs 25 lakh. The
second provision is due to lapse.
The provision was introduced in
the 2013-14 budget.
The benefit was available only
for a year to provide a muchneeded impetus to housing,
which has been hit by rising
interest rates and falling real
income levels. In the Vote
On Account presented on
Monday, finance minister P
Chidambaram decided not to
amend any direct tax provisions,
many of which are due to end
on March 31, 2014.
Although the next finance
minister has the option to
reintroduce the benefit, it may
not be available for the first
three-four months of 201415. Similarly, the benefit of
income tax rebate to companies
which are involved in power
generation and distribution
will also lapse. The provision
of lower dividend tax paid by
Indian companies on dividend
received from foreign companies
will also lapse on March 31,
2014.
Executive director (taxation) of
PWC India Kuldeep Kumar said
that the benefit under section
80EE was very helpful to those
who were buying their first
house. He said that if the interest
payable during a year is less
than Rs 1 lakh, the unclaimed
amount will be allowed to be
claimed in the next financial
year. The benefit was also
allowed during the construction
period.
With this provision, one could
avail a deduction of Rs 2.5 lakh
from his taxable income against
the interest paid on home loan.
After the provision lapses, the
first home buyer, falling under
30 percent bracket, will lose Rs
30,000 and those who are under
20 percent bracket will lose Rs
20,000.

automotive industry experts
at the third edition of theShell
Lubricants Technology Lecture
todayin India at the Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT)
Madras, Chennai.Here speakers
emphasised cross-industry coengineering as the fastest route
to optimising fuel efficiency
in lubricants for vehicles. The
event was attended by leading
automotive and engineering
experts in India as well as IIT
Madras faculty and students.
Dr. Selda Gunsel, Vice

Dubai to build world’s largest
man-made lagoon
Dubai is all set to build a 40-hectare man-made lagoon as a part of the Mohammad bin
Rashid City residential community project now underway. Upon completion, the largest
artificial lagoon will dwarf the 12-hectare Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheikh which currently
holds the Guinness World Record.
Crystal Lagoons Corp., well known as developers of the giant, awe-inspiring lagoon at
Sharm El Sheikh, launched the Dubai project at the Cityscape Global real estate conference in
Dubai recently. The developer has already started work on the project and hopes to complete
it by 2020.

UltraRope - New KONE technology
Higher Vertical travel made feasible
As more and more high-rise buildings come up and the
height of these towers continues to increase, the plight
of the people living here and visitors is inexplicable.
Thus the need to lift the people upto the top of these
buildings becomes imperative.
Until now, the elevator technology allows travel of
lifts in a building upto half-a-kilometre. But a new
technology has arrived that would double this travel
distance.
Now the new hoisting technology developed by Finnish
elevator manufacturer KONE will enable elevators to
travel heights of one kilometer – twice the distance than
currently possible. Hitherto the elevator at Burj Khalifa
travels the longest distance of 504 meters. The new
development only suggests that the Dubai landmark
will not remain the world’s tallest building for very
long.
UltraRope is the new technology of KONE that will
replace the conventional steel rope used for lifting with
one that is developed with a carbon fiber core and a
high-friction coating. This rope is extremely light,
reducing energy consumption in high-rise buildings.
This property of the rope also reduces the weight of
its moving components, such as the hoisting ropes,
compensating ropes, counterweight, elevator car,
and passenger load. This implies, at 800 meters, the
weight of the moving masses using KONE UltraRope
is a fraction of the weight accumulated with the
conventional steel rope.
KONE says that carbon fiber resonates at a completely
different frequency to steel and most other building
materials. As a result, the elevator downtime caused by
building sway will be reduced.
It is also assured that the rope will have twice the
lifetime as steel rope. So it requires less maintenance
and thereby reduces material waste and environmental
impact.
This comes as a breakthrough in elevator technology,
as Antony Wood, Architect and Executive Director,
Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat
(CTBUH) states, as one of the major limits of
single elevator travel distance was that at a height
of approximately 500 meters the weight of the rope
became unsupportable.
Currently, the fastest elevator in the world, made by
Toshiba, takes passengers from ground to roof in thirty
seconds, rising 33.7 mph through the Taipei 101. This
surpasses the speed of the Burj Khalifa’s Otis Elevator,
which travels at a mere 22 mph. At 828 meters tall,
the Burj Khalifa would still be nearly 300 meters shy
(equivalent to the height of The Shard) of the elevator
journey that this new technology proposes. This
advanced vertical transportation will allow building
ever-taller skyscrapers to become even more feasible.

Bangalore, known for its
bungalow culture, did not have
a great skyline despite being
the country’s IT capital. But this
identity has been changing in
recent times with a few builders
coming up with new skyscraper
projects.
A couple of months from
now, a south-based builder,
Golden Gate Properties, will
commence its project – 161
meter Presidential Tower,
located in the western suburb of
Yeshwantpur. Once completed,
this would be the city’s tallest
building.
Upon completion, the 1-million
sqft residential development
will top a list of seven other
high-rise buildings above 100
metres that have come up in
the last six years. The tower
may also be touted as the tallest

Subhas Chandra Bose Tower
on MG Road, with 25 floors
and built 106 metres above
ground level was Bangalore’s
only skyscraper. In 2008,
businessman Vijay Mallya’s
office UB Tower, which

the tallest building in the city at
128 metres above ground level.
Two years later the World
Trade Center built by Brigade
Enterprises piped Mallya’s UB
Tower to become the tallest
building, with 32 floors. Last
year, Mantri Developers’

This was by far the tallest
building that Bangalore had
seen. In contrast, Mumbai has
over 50 buildings – both under
construction and constructed –
that are over 150 metres above
ground level.
Bangalore’s high-rise growth
has been restricted for various
reasons, including the fact that
the city boasted of an airport
located within 10 kilometres
of the central business district
(CBD). The HAL airport is the
apex authority to issue a no
objection certificates (NOCs) on
height limits to developments
situated in a 20-kilometer
radius around the airport,
which effectively covers a major
portion of the city’s commercial
and IT hubs.

The owners of an observation
deck on the 94th storey of
Chicago’s John Hancock Centre
are considering adding a glass
box into which visitors would
be strapped and tilted forward to
experience a bird’s-eye view of the
city below.
According to a local business
newspaper, Crain’s Chicago
Business, the observatory’s owner
hopes the attraction – called the
Tilt – could compete with the
popular glass-floored observation
boxes, called the Ledge, that were
added to the 103rd floor of the
nearby Willis Tower in 2009.
Paris-based Montparnasse Group
56 bought the John Hancock
observatory in 2012 for $44.2
million and operates it as a separate
enterprise from the rest of the
spaces inside the 100-storey tower,
which was designed by Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill and completed in
1969.
“It’s no secret that observation
decks are very profitable, as
opposed to leasing square footage
in the building,” Daniel Thomas,
executive director of the World
Federation of Great Towers and
a former general manager of the
Hancock observatory, told Crain’s
Chicago Business. He added that
he estimates the John Hancock
observatory currently makes more
than $10 million annually from
tickets that cost $18, while the
Willis Tower’s income from ticket
sales starting at $19 could be as
much as $25 million.

The launch of a new
housing scheme by the Delhi
Development Authority (DDA)
may be postponed. This is
considered a dampener for
those dreaming of owning an
affordable house in Delhi.
It was announced that the
scheme will be launched in 2014
and the schedule was either
February or March, according
to sources in DDA. For most
Delhiites, DDA’s housing
schemes are the only chance of
owning a house in the Capital at
affordable rates.
However, the postponement
comes in the wake of the
upcoming Lok Sabha elections
in April or May. An undisclosed
DDA source said the modalities
of the housing scheme are being
worked on and the housing
scheme is not likely to be
launched in the next six months.
In its last housing scheme,
launched in 2010, the DDA
had offered 16,000 flats — one
room, three-bedroom and
furnished apartments. This
time, the number of flats could
vary between 9,000 and 30,000,
depending on which flats DDA
wants to include in the scheme.
The DDA has recently
submitted a report to the union
urban development ministry,
saying that nearly 33,000 flats
were available but in different
stages of construction. Of these
flats, about 25,000 flats are onebedroom

The parliament has recently
passed the historic bill to
create new state Telangana by
dividing Andhra Pradesh. This
happened amid strong protests
by members from Seemandhra
region against the division of the
state.
The Andhra Pradesh
Reorganisation Bill, 2014, which
has been hanging fire for long,
was adopted by voice vote along
with 38 official amendments.
Analyzing the impact of the
passage of this contentious bill
on Hyderabad, global property
consultant Jones Lang LaSalle
believes this may not have much
impact on investment sentiment
in realty sector across the city, as
it has already been decided that
it would serve as a joint capital
for next 10 years.
“The outcomes are still unclear,
but Brand Hyderabad is not
likely to be overly affected as
it is planned to serve as a joint
capital for 100 years,” said
Sandip Patnaik, JLL Managing
Director, Hyderabad. He further
said the city has state-of-the-art
infrastructure and is the most
developed ones in Andhra
Pradesh.
“Therefore, it will continue
to retain its relevance and
pre-eminence going forward.
Over the next 6-9 months, the
overall business sentiments
in the city are likely to remain
stable. Investors may find this
period favourable, as property
valuations are low and there is
still potential to capitalise on
this,” he said.
This period is also likely to offer
best deals for genuine home
buyers, as home prices will
remain stable for at least the
next 6-9 months. As a result,
residential sales are expected to
rise in the city. Similarly, office
space occupiers are expected
to regain their confidence
for business continuity in
Hyderabad – a factor that was
being negatively affected by
the previous agitations. Even
leasing activity will improve
now, and new occupiers will be
attracted to the city.
Meanwhile, the formation of
the new capital for the Andhra
Pradesh (Seemandhra region) is
likely to bring in new real estate
opportunities in terms of the
development of the new capital,
which will witness immense
infrastructural and real estate
growth.
Other key cites of Andhra
Pradesh – Vijayawada,
Visakhapatnam, Guntur,
Nellore, Ongole and Tirupathi
– are also likely to witness
increases in property prices
going forward. As these cities
are in the race for the new
capital, they may witness
increased speculation, Patnaik
added.
Impact of Telangana bill on

Qatar Fund to invest
$200 mn in Indian realty
Qatar Investment Authority
(QIA) plans investment of $200
million in residential property
in India. QIA is in talks with the
realty fund of one of the leading
banks in this regard, according
to reliable reports.
QIA, the sovereign wealth fund
of the gas-rich Gulf emirate,
is holding conversations with
Kotak Realty Fund, run by
Kotak Mahindra Bank. As per
deal, the Fund would manage
the investments on behalf of the
fund. But the deal has not been
finalized, the sources said.
Kotak would also make a
small investment and plans to
focus on residential property
developments in major cities
across Asia’s third-largest
economy for QIA, the source
revealed. However, there was
no confirmation from both the
parties
Sovereign wealth funds and
other long-term investors are
eyeing opportunities in India’s
real estate sector. They are
betting that property prices are
bottoming out after slumping
this year on the back of the
slowest economic growth in a
decade.
House sales in major Indian
cities, including Mumbai and
Delhi, fell 22 percent in the
quarter ended September 30.
House prices grew by 9 percent
over the same period compared
with double digit increases in
the year-ago quarter, according

Plan Investment Board (CPPIB)
said it would invest $200

sources.

Fund committed to investing
a combined $200 million in a
real estate fund run by Indian
mortgage lender HDFC Ltd.
The investments are a shot in
the arm for India’s property
developers, many of whom
are burdened with debt that
is expensive to service at
steep interest rates, the report
suggested. Banks are also
reluctant to lend because of fears
of defaults, while private equity
funds, which poured in billions
of dollars at the height of the
property market in 2007, have
turned cautious after project
delays impacted returns and
exits.

Exhibitions enlighten common man
President’s Message
Dear FACEAT&P members,
I am glad to be back interacting
with you again through this
journal. In this issue, I would
like to talk about building
materials.
To start with, I would like to
stress that all our engineers and
their associations should not
only attend building materials
exhibitions but they should also
conduct such exhibitions in their
own area.
As I have already been
insisting on continuously
gaining knowledge about
building materials, I wish
to again emphasize on this.
Because I could realise value
of such exhibitions in the
recently concluded exhibition at
Tirunelveli.
I happened to inaugurate
the above exhibition –Build
Tech 2014 on February 21. The
exhibition was held for three
days until February 23.
The prestigious building
materials show by the
Tirunelveli Civil Engineers
Association was inaugurated
by me. Ms Vijila Satyanand,
the member of Rajya Sabha
from Tirunelveli, honoured the
Association with her gracious
presence.

Speaking on the occasion, she
was all praise for our engineers
and their services, especially
to the Tirunelveli Corporation
and quoted that they were of
immense help to Tirunelveli.
As ex-Mayor of the corporation,
she spelt special mention about
our member Er Palanivelu and
appreciated his contribution to
creation of rule and regulations
for the corporation.
In the exhibition, many
products were at display. All of
us engineers must learn about
and endorse new building
materials that are being supplied
into the market.
Emerging building materials
are going to play vital role in
the future. Actually, usage of
traditional building materials
is getting reduced. Lot of issues
like labour and power come into
play in deciding the availability
and price factor.
With the scarcity of traditional
construction materials like sand,
brick and blue metals building
up, it becomes imperative for us
to adapt to newer technologies
and materials. In such a
situation, common man finds it
difficult to meet with the raising
cost of these materials and he
is not accustomed with newer
materials.
Only exhibitions expose him to
the new products. When experts
explain about these items, the
common man gains confidence
about the products and start
using it.
Now the traditional sand is
being replaced with M-Sand
(manufactured sand) and
aerated bricks and extruded
materials took over conventional
bricks. There are even binders
that are synthetic resins used
to bind these alternative blocks
thereby reducing labour, cost
and time overrun. These resins
are substitute to cement.
Similarly, many synthetic
products in windows, doors,
bath fittings, etc. have reduced
cost and time for the user.
All discussed, I believe the
exhibitions are key to the
process of dissemination of
information about new products
to the common man.
We shall discuss more topics in
the forthcoming issues.

AHEC to refocus its strategy for India
US hardwoods Exports to India up 8%
American Hardwood Export
Council (AHEC) will refocus
its strategy for India through
2014. This was revealed at
‘INDIAWOOD 2014’ held at
the Bangalore International
Exhibition Center during
February 21-25, 2014.
AHEC will educate all
elements of the ‘timber chain’,
namely specifiers - architects
and interior designers, end
users - furniture and joinery
manufacturers, or importers
and distributors. AHEC intends
to conduct lumber grading
workshops and design and
manufacturing seminars in a
number of metropolitan areas
around India.
The Council also prefers
to maintain a constant onthe-ground presence and
technical assistance through its
representative based in Mumbai.
AHEC’s outreach campaign
will also aim to raise further
awareness of emerging trends
such as thermally modified US
hardwoods.
An AHEC statement revealed
total exports of US hardwoods
reached $7.33 million in 2013,
an increase of 8 percent over the
previous year. This included
the value of shipments of
logs, lumber (sawn timber),
veneers, plywood and flooring.
The US also directly shipped
$1.13 million worth of white
oak barrels and barrel staves
last year to wine and whisky
producers in India.
The statistics released by the
United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) revealed
that shipments of logs accounted
for 31 percent or $2.28 million of
the total exports. This equated
to 5,609 cubic metres. The bulk
of the volume of logs shipped
was tulipwood, an alternative
face veneer peeler species
to traditional species from
Myanmar, such as gurjan.
With effect from April 1, 2014,
the Government of Myanmar is
looking to impose a total ban on
the export of raw timber. The
impact of this ban is also likely
to be felt very deeply by Indian
importers and users of natural
forest teak, who will be forced to
import processed lumber from
Myanmar or plantation teak and
alternatives.
The acceptance of American
hardwoods in India has
increased significantly in
recent years. As India’s
joinery, furniture and flooring
manufacturing base grows and
as disposable incomes increase,
AHEC anticipates the demand
for US hardwoods to continue
rising in the foreseeable future,
as per Roderick Wiles, AHEC
Director for Africa, Middle East,
South Asia and Oceania.
As such, AHEC is positive of
increased demand for American
hardwoods in India, not just
because of the consistency in
availability, quality and grade,
and wide range of colors, grains
and textures but also on account
of the sustainability and legality
of US hardwoods.
US hardwood lumber exports
to India reached a total value of
$2.12 million last year, marking
an increase of 7 percent on 2012.
This equated to a volume of
2,667 cubic meters.

Liebherr’s Expanded Wheel Loader Product Range
Liebherrintroduces two models
of the expanded wheel loader
product range for the Indian
market namely L 550 and L 580.
The wheel loaders are specially tailored to the needs of
Indian customers while featuring time-tested Liebherr quality.
Designed as robust standard
machines with the familiar high
performance and the low operating costs for which Liebherr is
well known, they comply with
the “Bharat Stage III” (BSIII)
emissions regulations required

The first wheel loader of
this range available for the
Indian market is the L 550 with
deliveries just started. The L 580

The L 550 wheel loader weighing in at 16,800 kg, achieves a

living, the space for relaxation
has shrunk.

of one of the gyms, his service
orientation makes him reveal
some of the unknown truths
about these centres.
In the meantime, modernized
and powered indoor fitness
centres or gyms have
mushroomed resulting in
increased competition. In major
cities, due to lack of space, these
gyms operate from a multi-

I had an idea of introducing
fitness programme with a new
concept. The competition in
gyms have been heavy and
increasing. With the growing
competition, the facilities
increased but the scope for
experienced hand to help me.
So I took the help of my friend
Srinivasan and my uncle who is
an electrician.
Over the past one year, we
have been experimenting to
develop equipments suited for
outdoor gym. I would have
spent over Rs 25,000 for creating
equipment that would only cost
Rs 9,000.
This was because we did
not have any specifications
on dimension, function or
measurements. And we
experimented at every stage
and came out successfully
with current equipment. We
learnt many things through
this experimentation like cost
cutting and all.
If imported, the outdoor
equipments would be much
costlier. Now I produce these
equipments here.
There are no outdoor gyms
here in our country. Many of
us are not aware of the outdoor
gyms and at the same time the
consequences of the indoor
fitness training.
When one practises in indoor
gyms, the oxygen generated by
us circulates within the limited
space affecting our health. In
the air-conditioned gyms, the
problems are compound. In
fact, one may inflict spondylitis
injury. It may look very nice but
will end up in Archilles’ heel in
the long run.
We have many parks in
Tamil Nadu which have kids
play area but no provision for
fitness regime. They have only
walking path but it is a hard
surface. This would lead to
many problems in future. There
should be suspension in the
surface and for that the surface
should be soft. Wet sand or clay
would be apt.
Many are practising
walking on the roads which
is dangerous. It will lead to
pelvic problem. Ultimately, it
may lead to brain damage in
future as all these are linked
by nervous system. Whereas
outdoor gyms will provide
environmentally clean air that
will improve our health.
Indoor gyms may be useful to
those who go for fashion show,
body building show, etc. but
for general fitness like for IT
employed one does not require
such a big training. Foreign
countries thus have introduced
outdoor fitness. In India, it is
not available till now. Non-Stop
Fitness will be the first one to
introduce.
The equipment import would
be costlier and NSF provides
them at much cheaper price
with same quality. Most
of these are non-weight
equipments such that they can
be used outdoors.
That said, we can call them
senior citizen equipments.
We manufacture equipments
specifically for senior citizens.
That does not mean other ages
cannot use.
The equipments available
with us can be multi-usage
and dual systems. We have 120
equipments all of which belong
to both categories.
The advantage of this outdoor
gym is it does not require
power supply as all equipments
are manually operated.
Additionally, there are no
side-effects in this system while
powered gym will produce
side-effects.
As the outdoor gym is
harmless, it can be
established by
anybody who has
open space.
In fact,
Chennai Corporation can
initiate setting up of outdoor
gyms in the parks considering
the non-weight nature of
equipments.
Another fact about fitness is
diet. Depending on the nature
of work and body, the intake
and calories are worked out. It
is 25 percent fitness workouts
and 75 percent diet.
I have conceptualised the
outdoor fitness in the last one
year and has been trying to
implement in the last four
months. It needs to be taken to
the masses for them to enjoy the
benefit of the workouts.
Outdoor gyms may provide
fitness for all.

WATER LEVEL
In the recent scenario,
rainwater storage (harvesting)
structures have assumed
tremendous significance since
the ground water level has gone
very much below. Deficient
rainfall last year has resulted in
ground water level depleting
in several parts of the State and
people are looking at ways to
recharge the ground water level.
Apart from the government
making it mandatory, people
too have realized the importance
of having rainwater harvesting
structure at home.
WAYS OF RAINWATER
HARVESTING
The house owners have started
to provide rain water harvesting
structures even in houses
already built. While there are
different ways of rain water
harvesting, some are looking at
using pipelines and diverting
the rain water to the borewell
at home. They claim that this
saves the need for space for a
rain water harvesting pit and
the cost. In some parts of the
State, the newly-constructed
houses are not only just going

in for rain water harvesting but
also diverting the water to the
borewells.
SETBACKS
While this practice is seen as a
cost and space saving method
by the house owners, it is not
welcomed by the engineers who
cite technical setbacks that can
affect the borewells. Experts in
the construction industry for
more than 25 years feel that this
method will affect the borewells.
They strongly recommend
establishing a proper rainwater
harvesting pit for harvesting
rainwater. According to them,
a casting pipe is fitted to the
borewell for a depth of 50 to 100
feet to ensure that the loosely
packed soil on its sides does not
cave-in and cover the borewell.
There is layer of hard soil
between the loosely packed soil
and the rocks beneath. When
rainwater is directly let into the
borewell, there are chances of
the hard soil to be washed away
and closing the borewell,
REQUIRED STEPS
Recalling incidents where
the diverted rainwater into the
borewells resulted in blocking
the borewells, rainwater can
be diverted into borewells
only if the house owner takes
required steps to avoid soil
erosion inside the borewell.
This can be done by extending
pipes carrying water from the
terrace to the bottom of the
borewell (that is a few hundred
feet deep). Though this is much
expensive, this has proved to be
advantageous. If any space is
earmarked for washing clothes
on the terrace, the soap water
should be separated so that it
does not mix with rainwater
as it will directly reach the
underground water.
BEST MEANS
However, the best means
to harvest rainwater is by
establishing a rainwater
harvesting pit. About 20 sq
ft to 30 sq ft will be sufficient
for establishing a rainwater
harvesting pit in a house. While
moderately good pits can be
prepared for Rs.5,000, a good
one will cost about Rs.10,000. If
these rainwater harvesting pits
are established in the houses
already constructed and in
the houses which are being
constructed now, then there will
no water problem in future.

Cyber City business district with a connection
to the Delhi Metro, the German engineering
and electronics conglomerate Siemens is now
constructing a seven-kilometre extension to
the south as a turnkey rail system. An order
worth about 70 million euros has been placed
with Siemens by the local concessionary
IL&FS Rail Ltd. (Infrastructure Leasing and
Financial Services).
The scope of delivery includes the
rolling stock, the entire electrification and
the signalling system. In addition, Siemens
is responsible for the complete system
integration. The line extension is due to be
commissioned by the end of 2015.
For the new section of the Gurgaon line,
Siemens is delivering seven aluminiumbodied metro trains which will run on
standard-gauge track at a top speed of about
80 kilometres an hour. The metro trains will
transport more than 30,000 passengers per
hour.
To fully electrify the new line extension,
Siemens will install a 750 V DC traction power
supply along with a third-rail system for
current collection. Power will be supplied

to the extension and the rest of the existing
line from the 66 kV grid. A medium-voltage
ring will supply four substations, six metro
stations and the depot with 11 kV AC.
In 2010, Siemens received the order to
build a metro line linking the residential and
business district of Gurgaon with the Delhi
Metro system. The section now contracted to
the company is to run further to the south and
will extend the existing metro line by around
seven kilometers and six stations. As of the
end of 2015, twelve Siemens trains will be
operating on the completed 13-kilometre-long
line and serving 12 stations.
Siemens entered the Indian mass transit
sector in 2004, when it completely equipped
Line 3 of the Delhi Metro with signalling and
rail communication systems. All extensions
of Line 3 to an overall length of 60 track
kilometres were also equipped with control
and signalling systems by Siemens. These
were followed up in October 2008 by an order
to supply the signalling, electrification and
baggage logistics for the 23-kilometre-long
Delhi Airport rail link.
