Message from the Chair of the Board
Thank you for another incredible
year!! In my final year as Chair, I
would like to express my gratitude to
all our donors, it is your commitment
that has inspired me to volunteer for
Humber and I will continue to do
so for our community. To my fellow
Foundation Board members and the
Foundation team thank you for all
your support during my term. Special
thanks to the Hospital Board, Staff
and Physicians and all our corporate
partners and volunteers for your
continuous support. I am very excited
about the plans for Humber’s new
hospital and understand the challenge
to raise the funds to build Ontario’s
First Digital Hospital at Keele, Wilson
and 401. As I step down as Foundation Board Chair, I will take on a new
challenging role on the Hospital Board
of Directors. Thank you for embracing Humber River Regional Hospital

To raise the funds required to build and equip the best
hospital in Toronto

with our community and the diverse groups within it

events a great success. This year our
Awesome Golf raised over $100,000
and our CIBC’s Wheels for Wellness
had a record number of over 600
riders and walkers participate. Our
Women’s Health & Wellness Day
raised a record total of $50,000, with
over 300 women in attendance.
Today the Foundation faces its biggest
challenge in its fundraising history –
raising fund to build our brand new
hospital – to open in Fall of 2014.
Humber serves a very diverse population– with patients from 140 countries
speaking 90 languages yet together we
are one! The new way of healthcare delivery is near and Toronto’s first brand
new hospital will be accessible to
everyone- near and far. As a donor, a
sponsor, a volunteer, a friend you each
play a significant role in bringing the
Hospital’s evolving vision to life – we

Transforming Hospital Design
IKEA Vaughan – Focusing on Children

KEA’s philanthropic focus is Children…and so when the
Foundation approached IKEA, Vaughan in the Fall of 2008,
they were more than willing to help our Paediatrics Department
by re-furnishing
the following “Care
by Parent” rooms: 1

1 Breast Feeding room at our
Church Site. This support from IKEA totals to $4,300. With the
help of Alicia Zoffranieri, Public Relations Specialist at IKEA, this
project came to life.

partnership with Infrastructure Ontario,
the Ontario Realty Corporation, HOK, and
other government agencies, Humber River
Regional Hospital is transforming the model
for future hospital planning in Ontario.
Our efforts to design Ontario’s first digital
hospital are breaking traditional boundaries
by incorporating community renewal. We’re
introducing new strategies for equipping
hospitals with the latest technologies. We’re
raising the bar on environmental performance for healthcare organizations. Lean;
Green; Digital: it will be the standard by
which future hospitals are judged.
It’s the result of thousands of hours of hard
work. Researching the best in design solutions around the globe. Computer testing
new workflows for maximum efficiency.
Refining concepts multiple times in search of the finest solutions.
All with one higher purpose: finding the optimum design that
most enables our hospital team to do what they do best: deliver
high quality, compassionate care to our patients and their families.
A Fabulous Dinner hosted by a longtime donor!

n Thursday, May 14, 2009 Café Giorgio D. played host to
a hundred Humber River staff, Foundation Board members, family and friends. Mr. Anthony Sampogna, Café Owner,
has been a proud supported of Humber River Regional Hospital
Foundation since 1992. At the start of 2009 Anthony expressed
interest and took the initiative of hosting this wonderful community dinner. It was an evening of great food, exceptional service
and great fun! We raised $1,500…thank you to all those who
joined us.
Portals of Care
W
e’ve put a great deal of work into
minimizing the distance patients will
have to travel at our new hospital. The best
solution: portals of care.
Simply put, portals of care are similar to what
you see in some airports. They’re dedicated
service access points, designed to keep walking to a minimum. Coming to our new hospital for chemotherapy? You’ll park (or get off
public transit), enter through a well-marked
separate entry for the cancer clinic, and go
directly to the reception area for that service
right inside that entrance. Other services orthopaedic fracture clinic, cardiac clinic,
bariatrics - in fact most clinics will each have
their own portal.

ur neighbourhood Shoppers Drug Mart locations were a
proud supporter of Humber River Regional Hospital. Their
2009 Tree of Life Program, which took place during September
26th and October 19th, helped raise a total of $8,348, in support
of the HRRH Women’s
Health & Wellness Department. The following
nine stores in the community took part: Jane/
Finch, Keele/Wilson,
College Square- College/
Dufferin, Lawrence/Dufferin, Bathurst/Glencairn,
Weston/Lawrence, Jane/
Wilson, Dufferin/Eglinton, and Avenue/Wilson.
Thank you to the team at each participating store for being such
amazing advocates of our hospital, we look forward to continuing
our journey with you!

n January 18, 2010, Humber River Regional Hospital, the
Foundation and donors took part in the unveiling of an
original painting for our Chemotherapy Department, Church site.

her parents, Bess
and Ted Caplan,
former patients
of Humber River
Regional Hospital
and In honour of,
the doctor who
cared for them, Dr.
Sam Berger. Ms. Harriette Caplan wanted to honour Dr. Berger
for his wonderful care over the many years, as Ms. Caplan said,
“Dr. Berger was the only medical person that each of my parents
would see without hesitation.” When commissioning the piece
of art, “I wanted a painting that patients and their families would
like to gaze at during such a painful and stressful time. Something that individuals could look at and get so to speak ‘lost in’,
even if only for a moment or two”, said Ms. Caplan.
Care and Compassion Motivate a Son’s Gift

n Friday, February 19, 2010, Humber River Regional Hospital, staff and physicians from the Nephrology Program, and
the Foundation joined Pasquale and Jennifer DiCapo, along with
their family and friends in a special donor recognition and unveiling ceremony, celebrating his generous gift to the Nephrology
Program made In honour of his father, Vito DiCapo.
“I am deeply humbled and honoured to give back to the hospital
that has taken such great care of my father” says Pat “to all the
doctors and nurses, thank you for keeping my dad alive.” “I hope
Humber will continue to receive support from the private
sector in the future”.
On Christmas Day 2009, Pasquale gave his father, Vito DiCapo, a
gift of a lifetime – a gift that would benefit the dialysis patients of
today and tomorrow. Vito has been a longtime patient of Humber, his wife, Letizia
DiCapo, also once

increase from the previous year. In 2008/09 we received a total
of 221 online donations and in 2009/10 there were a total of 545

s of March 31, 2010, our Twitter account holds over 900
followers. We are listed on over 40 lists as “someone to follow” and we follow close to 800 of some of the most active Twitter
accounts in Toronto. We also have over 12 lists of our own;
whereby we help our followers connect and network with each
other.
On June 25, 2009, the HRRH Foundation Board of Directors,
Foundation Staff and the Al Palladini Education Endowment
Fund Selection Committee distributed $30,000 to the following
fellow hospital staff members and their children, in support of
their healthcare related educational pursuits.

At the end of March 2010 we launched a Facebook Fan Page. We
will utilize Facebook ads to grow our presence on Facebook and
will set up Event pages for our four Signature Events.

to include a YouTube channel, featuring videos from events and
patient stories, as well as set up a Flickr account hosting photos
from our four signature events, which our guests can view and
share amongst family and friends.

On Monday, June 22, 2009, Humber
River Regional Hospital Foundation
hosted its 26th Annual Awesome Golf
Tournament at the Weston Golf & Country
Club. This first class event was exclusive to
120 golfers who received personalized service,
including shuttle service to the driving range
and their very own personal caddy. Our
guests enjoyed a fabulous day of golf and
ended the evening with an exquisite
gourmet dinner and wine tastings.

On Sunday, September 27, 2009
over 600 enthusiastic riders and walkers took part in our 4th Annual Wheels
for Wellness at Seneca College, King
Campus and raised over $30,000 in support
of Humber’s New Hospital. We welcomed
CIBC onboard as our presenting sponsor and
thank them for their commitment. Everyone
came together at the finish line and enjoyed
a relaxing massage and family fun-filled
picnic, with children activities including
jumping castles, rock climbing and
lots of toys for boys and girls – Bakugans, PixOs Super Studio,
music, entertainment
and lunch.
On Sunday, October 20, 2009
over 300 women participated in a
day of health education and fun, in support of Humber River Regional Hospital
Foundation’s 7th Annual Women’s Health &
Wellness at the Paramount Conference & Event
Venue. Our keynote speaker, Libby Znaimer,
expressed her own personal battle with breast
cancer, while a few of Humber’s very own physicians covered the major areas concerning Breast
Cancer- including Dr. Laura Whiteacre, Dr.
Susan Pang, Dr. Sam Berger and Dr. Martin
Jugenburg. It was a day to relax, laugh and
mingle with friends. The guests listened
to wellness topics including Tosca
Reno’s “Eat Clean Diet” and
participated in an exercise
demonstration.
