We have an exciting year ahead and want you to know what you can expect in the future from John Muir
Health. In the fall, the Concord Campus will open the Hofmann Family Patient Care Tower and in the spring
of 2011, the Walnut Creek Campus will open the Tom and Billie Long Patient Care Tower.
What will this mean to you if you need health services? More inpatient privacy, more space in the emergency
departments, more operating rooms, a new Cardiovascular Institute, seismically compliant buildings and the
same high-quality health care that you have always received from John Muir Health.
As we look forward to these new additions to our campuses, John Muir Health continues to receive quality of
care awards and accolades from peer organizations and consumer groups alike.
In 2009, both campuses of John Muir Health have been recognized with the highest level of Chest Pain
Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, earned a three-year accreditation with
commendation as Network Cancer Programs from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
and been recognized as the Best of the Best Family Favorite Hospital by BayArea Parent readers.
Once again John Muir Medical Center-Walnut Creek Campus was ranked as one of the nation’s top hospitals
by U.S. News & World Report.
John Muir Medical Center – Concord Campus was ranked by HealthGrades among the top five hospitals in
California for cardiac surgery and received a five-star rating for the treatment of heart attacks and heart failure.
In addition, our two medical centers are the only hospitals in the East Bay to receive the Distinguished
Hospitals for Clinical Excellence award from HealthGrades. We are proud of these accomplishments and know
they could not have been achieved without our outstanding physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers and donors. In
2009, your continuing financial commitments resulted in the John Muir Health Foundation receiving a total
of $14,936,000 in gifts and pledges for both current needs and for the new buildings. Thank you for your gifts

The excellent care “provided a tremendous comfort
during an emotional time.”
Three and a half years ago, Natalie and Cole Goldstein
were born prematurely at John Muir Medical Center –
Walnut Creek. This fall when Cole had an accident which
necessitated a quick trip to the Emergency Department,
the Goldsteins had another memorable experience at John
Muir. The emergency physician was “amazing and placed
a follow-up call to our house the next day,” said
Cole’s father. This second John Muir encounter
inspired Michael Goldstein to send a
letter along with a contribution

and praise John Muir for the family’s experience after
the birth of their twins in the fall of 2006. As Michael
Goldstein phrased it, “Natalie had a 10-day vacation at
the Hotel NICU while Cole had a 14-day extended stay.
Words can’t express the appreciation my wife and I have
for the nurses and doctors that took care of our babies
during those critical days.”
After her discharge, Diane Goldstein
was at the hospital every morning and
stayed late into the night. Michael
would join her after work. They
would usually go home by the 11:30
pm shift change. Nighttime was
the most difficult time
of the day for Diane and
Michael, but they
said that they were
better able to leave
knowing that Cole
and Natalie were
receiving “excellent
care which provided
tremendous comfort
during a very
emotional time.”
Diane and Michael Goldstein are envious of the plans for the new NICU which will
accommodate a parent who wishes to stay overnight in the thirty-three private NICU
rooms (two are twin rooms). Other family friendly areas in the NICU will be a family
lounge and playroom for siblings and a parent’s bathroom.
They still remember the
Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU) nurses and
appreciated how honest
and forthright they
were in communicating about the babies’
progress.
Several months after Cole
was home, his pediatrician had concerns about his motor
development and requested a referral to John Muir’s
High Risk Infant Follow-up Clinic. The clinic is designed
for babies who have received care in the NICU at John
Muir. During the visits, the team of specialist and nurses
perform physical and neurological evaluations. Diane
brought Cole in to the Neonatologist team which
recommended physical therapy to assist Cole with his
large motor development. Later occupational therapy was
recommended to improve his fine motor development.
All during this time his mother was also following
through with Cole on exercises at home. Cole’s last
appointment was on January 5, 2009. According to his
doctors, he responded beautifully to the interventions he
had received and at the time of discharge was functioning
in the normal range for his chronological age. Diane is
very grateful to John Muir
for this additional service
provided to John Muir

mischief. Cole
is determined
to become as
skilled on his
skateboard as
the big boys
next door
and Natalie
is a talkative young lady

In August of 2009,
Francine Confetti of
Pittsburgh awoke one
Saturday morning and
felt pressure in her
chest. She thought
it was indigestion.
Because the pressure
persisted, she woke
her husband
Dominic and
asked him to
bring her a 7-Up
to relieve the
indigestion.
When he
returned with
the drink, she
was perspiring
profusely.
Dom thought
they should drive to the hospital,
but when Francine stood up, she passed out. He called
911 at 6:46 am.
determine that they need to go to a STEMI receiving
center and so they activate their STEMI system.
A STEMI is a high risk heart attack. A STEMI system is
a network that incorporates Emergency Medical Services and
the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Both the Walnut
Creek and Concord campuses are designated STEMI
RECEIVING CENTERS by Contra Costa County. These
centers allow for rapid assessment, diagnosis, and immediate
treatment/intervention in the cardiac catheterization lab
using a coordinated team approach.
6:58 am On the way to the hospital, the paramedics
repeat the EKG and this time it reads Acute Myocardial
Infarction so their decision to activate the STEMI earlier
was confirmed.
7:05 am Dr. Kavanaugh and the Cath Lab are alerted.
7:15 am Francine arrives at the Emergency Department
at John Muir Medical Center – Concord Campus.
7:20 am A 2nd IV line is started because of low blood
pressure and Francine is placed on a cardiac monitor with
pacing because of her low Heart Rate.
6:50 am The paramedics arrive at the Confetti home.
7:25 am Patrick Kavanaugh, M.D. arrives and speaks
with Francine and Dominic.
6:53 am The paramedics attempt an EKG and with the
little data they can get – the leads wouldn’t stick – they

Once the blood flow is reestablished a patient
experiences an incredible feeling of good
health. Dr. Kavanaugh said he has had
some patients ask if they can go home.
However, Francine, like all cardiac
patients was admitted to a cardiac
monitoring unit and observed
for 24 to 48 hours. Risk factors
such as diabetes, blood
pressure, cholesterol and
smoking are addressed if
present and advice and
counseling on diet and
exercise is provided before
release as well as cardiac
medications that are indicated.
Follow-up visits are arranged
with the cardiologist on a
regular basis.
*Research has shown that a patient’s survival improves when the
blocked coronary artery is re-opened within 90 minutes after arrival
in the Emergency Department. The 90 minute time
is called “door to balloon time.” Francine

The garden level of the new tower will house five large cardiac cath labs (see dark
green rooms). Also on the garden level are the recovery lounge, the 12 prep and
recovery rooms, and the cardiologist’s workroom. The new emergency department
is on the first floor directly above this area allowing for quick transport to the cardiac
cath labs.

disorders, the John Muir
Neurosciences Institute
(NSI) provides a
continuum of expert
care. The NSI integrates
the clinical expertise
of neurosurgeons,
neurologists, interventional neuro radiologists,
radiation oncologists,
neuropsychologist and
physiatrists in one of
the most comprehensive
programs in Northern
California for diagnosis,
treatment and consultation.
Last October, Eddie Stegge, one
of the principal dancers of the
Diablo Ballet lay unconscious and
near death on a Concord
Street after being
mugged and
beaten by
two teenagers. In February, he
returned to dancing thanks to the
neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists
and the rehabilitation team at
John Muir. His excellent physical
condition aided his astonishing
recovery.
“Our Brain Injury Program is
hospital wide streamlining our
treatment of traumatic brain
injury dramatically. The Brain
Injury Program involves many
services, Neurosciences, Trauma,
Rehab and others. Very few other
hospitals have a program of such
depth. Patients are out of the hospital
in fewer days and at a higher functional
level. Rehab takes them earlier and they
‘graduate’ as close to their previous
healthy state as possible,” says Terence
L. Chen, M.D., Medical Director of
Neurosurgical Services and current
Chief of Staff at the Walnut Creek
Medical Center.

Neurosurgery services are a rarity in Northern California and John Muir serves as
a regional resource. The new patient care tower will provide more intensive care
beds allowing John Muir to accept more neurosurgery transfers.

“What’s interesting about neurological recovery is that it
takes a long time. In a case like Henry’s, it’s really great
to see how much function and cognition is restored over
time. We don’t always get to see that,” commented
Dr. Chen.
A key recent
acquisition
used in the
NSI is the
powerful 3T
MRI scanner which
allows advanced neuroimaging of
the brain. Recommended by Interventional
Radiologist Dr. Ira Finch because of its multiple uses and
superior imaging, the functional MRI “helps us figure out
how the parts of the brain work. Now we can correlate
function with anatomy. This makes brain surgery much
safer,” remarked Dr. Chen.
In March of 2008, 16-year old Brian Gee was hit in the
head with a baseball. After nine weeks of medical and
rehabilitation treatment, Brain came home and started on
his out-patient course of recovery. Brian made up his
sophomore year school work during the summer and
returned to high school full-time as a junior with his class
at Miramonte High School in Orinda. Recently Brian
received his acceptance to UC-Berkeley and will be

are able to use it in patient care.”

In December of 2009,
the WPC funded three
John Muir Health
services. First, a treadmill,
a recumbent elliptical
machine, and a portable
spirometer were funded
for the Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Program
which provides comprehensive outpatient care
for people with chronic
lung disease. Second,
thorascopic instruments
were funded for use in
minimally invasive
surgery by thoracic
surgeons at Walnut Creek
and, finally, fifteen
mobile phones were
funded for the emergency
department at Concord
which will assist the staff
while at the bedside to
communicate if needed
with physicians and
patient families. The
WPC also stepped
forward to make a pledge
to the Capital Campaign
of $50,000 to be split
between the two building
projects.

We are pleased to report to the community that in 2009, John Muir Health saw positive results from our
operations and fundraising. As a not-for-profit, locally governed and community-based organization, our focus
remains firmly on improving the health of the communities we serve. All of our remaining funds are reinvested
in the community in much-needed programs, upgraded advanced technology, community services and in this
current year - the building projects.
