Ellsworth explored the Peruvian Andes,

he claimed some 380,000 mi² of Antarctica

tradition of making shoes by hand
When we set out to craft the ultimate men’s shoes,
we had a clear vision of our goal: simple, classic,
bold footwear expertly crafted of the finest materials
to carry you faithfully through the years.
Turns out finding craftspeople who live up to these
standards wasn’t so easy, until we visited a smallish
city in Maine. That’s where we found Rancourt &
Co., a third generation shoemaking family that builds
shoes with skill and pride - right down to the handtied stitching in our Moccasin and Ranger Shoe.
Every shoe is made in Maine (and 90 percent of the raw
materials come from the USA) with obsessive attention
to detail. Where most manufacturers crank out 30,000
pairs of shoes per week, Rancourt does 800 to 900.
What's more, Rancourt doesn’t use pre-formed or prepunched leather, but crafts shoes for The Field Outfitting
one at a time on the last, or shoe form, to achieve a level
of fit and comfort that mass-produced shoes cannot match.

Cone Mills’ White Oak plant –
America's oldest working
denim mill
In a 107-year-old red brick facility
in Greensboro, North Carolina, a
nearly lost American heritage is
being revived – one pair of jeans
at a time. The place is Cone Mills
White Oak factory – America’s
oldest working denim mill. The
product is The Field Selvedge Jean.
Woven on vintage fly-shuttle
looms from the 1940s, ours is
denim with character that modern
fabrics lack. These narrower looms
create a continuous uncut edge – a
characteristic finish inside the legs,
visible when the bottoms are rolled up.
This selvedge or “self edge” denim is
more durable, displays intriguing
variations in the weave, and develops
a striking patina over time. Better
still, selvedge denim eliminates
the need for bulky coverstitching
at seams, resulting in construction
that’s smoother and more comfortable
than mass-produced denim.
