2015 iWOMEN Project ana) (Kwin y r e n i f e isit BP R iWOMEN students v inside industry Over 6 days in March and April, 32 The students saw the inner workings of Year 10 female students from the several of the KIC member companies Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) including Education Partnership high schools and BP Refinery and they were able participated in this year’s iWOMEN to meet and talk to employees in a Project. Students were given the opportunity to explore and gain an understanding of the Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA), the companies that operate there, and the sorts of careers they have to offer. “The 2015 KIC iWOMEN Program gave the participants the opportunity to explore and understand the sorts of industries in the Kwinana Industrial Area. There is a huge range of career options industry has to offer and this program is about opening the students’ eyes to the career possibilities that exist.” Chris Oughton, KIC Director The students, who came together from 13 local high schools, were involved in a variety of activities and met with current employees from KIA member companies. Activities included industry visits, workshop sessions on social media, resume preparation, meeting with women in industry, industry review and research, plus a visit to The Leeuwin whilst the ship was in Fremantle. Not only did participation in the KIC iWOMEN Project create a friendship bond between the students, but it also allowed them to discover a range or career options available to them in local industry. “Over the 6 days of the iWOMEN Project, we have become the best of friends. The 32 students were presented with their KIC project shirts and given an overview of the activities planned during the 6 day program. Teambuilding and ‘getting to know each other’ were the key themes for the first morning session. Students were taken out of their ‘comfort zone’ and split into groups with students they had not met before. The girls quickly formed new friends and the groups established were to work together over the 6 days of the program. KIC welcomes the students selected for the KIC 2015 iWOMEN Project KIC has three other iProjects for Year 10 students: • iMEN (Term 2 – May) • iSCIENCE (Term 3 – August) During the afternoon the students had the opportunity to meet with women from industry and find out more about their roles. Jacqui Prosser, CSBP, Amy Henderson & Eugenia Phegan, Alcoa, Katelyn Booth, KIC, Rachel Lewis, Janelle Shackley & Karen Runge, BP Refinery spoke to the students about their roles and the career pathways they had taken. • iDIVERSITY (Term 4 – October) for students with special needs All iProjects are run annually. Day 4 Day 5 Fremantle Ports hosted students on day 4 for a tour of On day 5 students visited BP Refinery (Kwinana) where their Fremantle operations and a ride on the Emergency Response boat. They were introduced to staff at the Port who gave them advice on choosing their career pathways. During the day, students had the opportunity to board The Leeuwin II. KIC has a partnership with the Leeuwin they visited the Learning and Development Room to watch a video on the products made by BP. The students were then taken on a driving tour of the BP Refinery site plus walking tours of the Control Room and Medical Centre. They met a number of staff from BP, including Rachel Lewis and Renee Sandy, who answered the students’ Ocean Adventure Foundation and all interested students questions about their careers and who also offered the were invited to apply for 1 of 2 KIC scholarships. We all worked out that we all felt comfortable and confident after talking to someone we didn’t know. We also felt more prepared after we knew about the do’s and don’ts, how to present ourselves, prepare for the questions they might ask, what questions we should ask them and more. We all feel like we can go and try for jobs in the workforce.” 2015 iWOMEN Students Day 6 On the morning of day 6 the students prepared their presentation for the evening Presentation Ceremony. Each group would provide their review of each day of the program. During the afternoon students were treated to workshops on presenting themselves for an interview. Students were shown the importance of correct make up and hair and dress styles for interviews. Around 120 guests attended the Presentation Ceremony held at the Koorliny Arts Centre. All iWOMEN students graduated the 2015 iWOMEN Project.
