To Our Loyal Readers, I n 2002, Archaia broke new ground in a very congested marketplace by committing ourselves to publishing only the very best highend original concepts, stories and artwork that we knew meant more to readers than the typical run-of-the-mill superhero-versus-villain storyline or the latest fad licensed property. We are proud to say, eight great years later, we have not lost our way at Archaia. In fact, Archaia has compiled an impressive backlist of titles that includes Mouse Guard, Days Missing, Gunnerkrigg Court, Artesia, The Killer, Awakening, and Fraggle Rock. We are often asked, “What qualifies as an Archaia title?” To us it is simple: a timeless story that respects the readers’ intelligence and desire for sophisticated content, matched by unparalleled artwork and production values. Equally as important is Archaia’s presentation of the material; From digest-sized books to gorgeous coffee table volumes, Readers have come to know Archaia as the only publishing company to focus solely on reproducing our material in high-quality hardcovers. Whether the subject matter is a mouse or a zombie, the year is 836 BC or 3011 AD, the genre is historical fantasy or pulp noir, Archaia is committed to growing the audience for the graphic novel medium by bringing readers some of the best and most forward-thinking sequential storytelling in the industry. Now, looking forward, we have re-committed ourselves to broadening our horizons even further by bringing in more amazing original concepts from seasoned and first-time creators around the world. We are extremely excited about our upcoming publishing schedule, which includes breathtaking new graphic novels such as Return of the Dapper Men, Killing Pickman, The Dark Crystal and The God Machine, as well as the return of perennial favorites such as Mouse Guard, Fraggle Rock, and The Killer, with many more surprises in store! We hope you will continue to enjoy Archaia titles as much as we enjoy publishing them and look forward to sharing countless new stories and new worlds with you in the future! Sincerely, PJ Bickett President & CEO & Mark Smylie Chief Creative Officer To our Creators, without your passion, pure genius and dedication to your property, Archaia would not be able to claim it works with the best in the business! The idea for the story came from a sketch I drew of what would become [Antimony]. I'd been looking for a story to work on for some time and I thought she looked interesting enough to try making a comic about. I knew the web was the only way anyone would see the comic, so after I had a few pages down and got into the swing of things, I put it online. Did that influence the way you told your story? Not really. I knew I wanted to release it in a fairly standard format page by page. I wasn't interested in making a comic that was web-specific or that had some crazy update schedule. I was only interested in telling a story, so I pace it as a normal comic and release it three times a week one page at a time. Did you ever dream that you would see the series in print? That wasn't a concern at the start. It was my first real comic and my first goal was to just see if I could work on it at a regular pace. Luckily the format I'd chosen helped with printing later on down the road, but that was coincidence. Getting readers was another step and that turned out quite well after a while. Getting to print was something that happened by chance, really. I think if it had been my goal from the start I would have driven myself crazy. The star of Gunnerkrigg Court is Antimony Carver. How would you describe her? Annie starts out as a very stoic girl. Her experiences at the Court cause her to open up and come out of her shell by dropping her in at the deep end in certain situations, be it dealing with a trickster god, or just making friends with another girl in her class. The first book reveals many of the mysteries hidden in the Court and introduce the main characters. The second book shows Annie and Kat getting to work solving these mysteries and growing as individuals. How does Antimony’s broad cast of supporting characters help define her? The supporting cast is there to offset Annie's personality. Kat in particular is more of a second main character, and she is basically the opposite of Annie in every way. This is really what draws the two of them together. There is a lot either one of them wouldn't have been able to do on their own. How would you describe your drawing style? Who are your art influences? I don't think I have any specific artistic influences, I try and pick things up from every artist I like, and there are quite a few of them. My drawings have been described as very "manga-ish" by people who don't know anything about manga, and very Western by people who like Japanese comics, so make of that what you will. I just wanted to make something that looked appealing, but not too serious. I experiment a lot with visual styles in the comic, and the art has come a long way since the beginning. I hope it will continue to evolve as I work on it. Some people enjoy Gunnerkrigg Court as a webcomic, some as a book, and some enjoy both. What is your preference? Having the comic online means I get feedback right away from people who like it and makes the whole project seem more like a real thing. Having the books as physical objects is great though, and I've been hearing from lots of people the world over who have bought them, or found them in their local library. Comics are a hard sell at the best of times, and webcomics even more so. Showing someone the books is a great way to make the comic seem like more than a nebulous concept. The webcomic will always be there as long as I have a job to pay to keep it online, and I hope it will be until the story is finished. INTERVIEW I 53 A Word with Michael McMillian Creator and Writer of Lucid Congrats on making your comic book writing debut with Lucid! As a new player on the scene, what kind of comics did you grow up on? Were there any comics that you feel have influenced your writing of Lucid? My first official comic book was Amazing Spider-Man #304, which I actually have framed and hanging over the desk where I’m writing Lucid. Amazing SpiderMan was my “gateway drug” to comics…There was a great year in college when Alan Moore’s ABC books and Warren Ellis’ Wildstorm stuff kicked off, and those series really recharged my love for reading comics. I think I’m writing Lucid to the 20 year old me who’s still sitting in the back room of my Pittsburgh apartment reading Promethea and Planetary. As an actor, you’ve seen what makes good, compelling content. How did you use this when writing Lucid? What was it like learning how to write a script for comics? One thing I find myself doing, and this definitely comes from my acting background, is speaking the dialogue from Lucid aloud. It can be about outrageous, fantastical stuff, but if it doesn’t roll of the tongue—it isn’t working. I want my characters to sound like they are actually talking. Has Archaia been helpful in bringing you up to speed with scripting for comics? I have to continually remind myself that a comic script is essentially instructions for the artist, and I think I’ve gotten stronger as the 4 Issues have developed. Having said that, I want all of my scripts to be good reads. What can I say? It’s hard work, but fun. Archaia has definitely got my back. My editor, Paul Morrissey, has been a very reliable partner in this process! How long have you had the world of Lucid in your mind? I’ve been cooking up Lucid for almost two years now. A few elements, such as The Ambrosian Order and the character of Wren existed in earlier forms in a 54 I ARCHAIA 2010 pilot script I wrote a couple of years back. I guess I’ve wanted to do something in the magical realm for a while now. What makes it so perfectly tailored to be told as a comic book? I’ve gotten really bored with Hollywood’s and comic’s current obsession with ‘beginnings” and constant retellings of origins. I thought it’d be fun to start the book at the climax of a Matthew Dee adventure. Start the story with the end of the last one, you know? It worked for Indiana Jones- maybe it will work for Matthew Dee. What are the "rules" of the world of Lucid? Lucid takes place in a world that is very similar to our own. Most people just go about their mundane lives, never giving the larger, fantastical world a second thought. Then there is a small fraction of the population that have the natural gift to conduct magic. But then there is a teeny-tiny fraction of those people in Lucid's world who are like Mozarts of this type of phenomena. They go well beyond the abilities of your average tarot-card reader. These are Mages. Your collaborator, Anna Wieszczyk, has a very distinct art style that belies many influences. Did you always imagine the series depicted that way? Anna was drawing, intentional or otherwise, from a tradition that’s directly linked to classic fairy tale illustrators like Ivan Bilibin, Honor C. Appleton, and Margaret Evans Price. That is something I never predicted, and yet felt so right for Lucid. It’s extremely inspiring when an artist shows you something you didn’t expect and immediately fall in love with. What would you say to someone who's on the fence about adding Lucid to their pull list? Lucid is going to be a fun, offbeat, entertaining read with cool characters and fantastic artwork. It’s comics for people who love comics. What else do you need to know?!
