LENAWEE UNITED WAY 2013/2014 Annual Report www.lenaweeunitedway.org BUILDING A BETTER LENAWEE 2 A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, It’s been a great year at Lenawee United Way! As usual, there is so much GOOD happening in Lenawee County! We invite you to take a look through our 2013/14 Annual Report to get just a glimpse of the difference Lenawee United Way has made in our community. Our theme this year was “Building a Better Lenawee”! Our message was that not one person, not one business, not one non-profit can change our community. It takes ALL of us working together to make the change. So, how did we “Build a Better Lenawee” this year? • A record 500 volunteers came together on Day of Action to help local non-profit agencies! Day of Action volunteer hours are valued at more than $25,000! • • • More than 2,400 people donated to Lenawee United Way. • A total of 13 young professionals completed our Emerging Leaders program, making them better leaders in their workplaces and in the community. • Lenawee United Way staff participated on 22 committees, coalitions, task forces, or boards to help identify issues and develop action plans for solving those issues. • More than 2,000 hours of time was donated back to the community just from Lenawee United Way volunteers. • Brazeway, Inc. and Kapnick Insurance Group piloted a new United Way initiative and served as Enhanced Workplace Campaigns. Through this partnership, we provided their employees with an opportunity to learn more about United Way throughout the year and they volunteered together at a Habitat for Humanity House in April. • Our funded programs produced amazing outcomes thanks to Lenawee United Way grants! (See page 3 for some of those statistics.) • As always, 99% of donations stayed right here in Lenawee County. We answered 2,716 calls at our 2-1-1 call center from Lenawee residents. Lenawee residents saved $11,285 thanks to our FamilyWize prescription drug discount program. On behalf of our Board of Directors, we thank you for your investment, your support, and your generosity. Without amazing donors, volunteers, and supporters like you, we would not be able to “Build a Better Lenawee!” Gratefully, Janelle Stewart, Board President WWW.LENAWEEUNITEDWAY.ORG Amy Palmer, Executive Director LENAWEE UNITED WAY RESULTS THAT MATTER 3 With your support, we are helping children enter kindergarten ready to learn, helping families reach financial stability and make healthy choices. Thank you for pushing me to do more with my life” - member from the Boys & Girls Club of Lenawee Health: Lenawee United Way’s goal is to increase by one third the number of youth and adults who are healthy and avoiding risky behavior over the next 10 years by funding programs that focus on: ⇒ Healthy Eating & Physical Activity. ⇒ Supporting Healthy Choices. ⇒ Access to Healthcare. “I like “Jump Start” because we do all sorts of activities like dodgeball, basketball, swimming, indoor hockey, Wii, ping pong, etc. I also like the counselors because they are nice, fun and understand what kids our age like to do...if we have homework they help us. So yeah, it’s fun.” -Robert, a YMCA Jump Start participant WWW.LENAWEEUNITEDWAY.ORG LENAWEE UNITED WAY MAKING AN IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY 7 Income: Lenawee United Way’s goal is to cut in half the number of lower-income families who are financially unstable over the next 10 years by funding programs that can assist with: ⇒ Helping families and individuals gain the skills necessary to increase their financial well-being. ⇒ Helping low-income working families have access to affordable housing options. ⇒ Helping low-income working families and individuals to access low-cost products and services. “Hi, my name is Trisha. I am a single mom of two girls. I always seemed to be struggling to get by. Sometimes I was working two jobs to support my family. We have been through some really tough times. I was starting to give up on myself. Then I was offered the opportunity to join the CASS (Complete Approach to Self Sufficiency) Program through Community Action Agency. In doing this I’ve completed the Financial Freedom Class and graduated from the Getting Ahead (GA) Class. As a graduate from the GA class I was given the opportunity to be one of the co-facilitators of one of the GA classes being offered by the United Way and CAA. With all these opportunities I have been given, I am starting to make some great changes in my life. I have enrolled in Dental Assistance courses, which I have wanted to take for years, but never had the courage until now. By using the money I earned from being the co-facilitator of the GA classes, I paid for the course myself!!! Now I know the feeling “I DID IT ALL BY MYSELF!” and it’s one of the greatest feelings ever.” Basic Needs Lenawee United Way realizes that to achieve the goals in the areas of Education, Income and Health, individuals need to have their basic needs met. In an effort to achieve this, Lenawee United Way provides mini-grants to programs that can address areas of clothing, food, personal needs items and utilities. $15,000 has been distributed in Basic Needs grants as of June, 2014. 2013/2014 ANNUAL REPORT 8 THE 2013/2014 CAMPAIGN Over 2,400 individuals in Lenawee County ge their employees and affiliated unions, made to the 2013/2014 campaign.
