Ljubljana
Druga Godba, held for the 32nd
year running, is a festival of world
music and, to a lesser extent,
contemporary jazz. It ranks among
Europe's best festivals of alternative
music difficult to fit neatly into
musical categories.
Druga Godba is well known for
bringing to Ljubljana leading
artists from different backgrounds
and musical traditions who draw
inspiration from traditional musics
from around the world and are
committed to creative musical
exploration. Due to its enthusiasm
for ‘discovering’ less well-known
music from around the globe, its
line-up is often ahead of trends.
The influential British magazine
Songlines has ranked Druga
Godba among the world's 25 best
international music festivals several
times.

National Gallery
The National Gallery, Slovenia’s foremost
museum of historical art, holds the
country’s largest collection of fine art
from the High Middle Ages to the 20th
century. It also houses a permanent
exhibition of works by Zoran Mušič
(1909-2005), one of Europe’s leading
modernist painters, and various
temporary exhibitions.
The National Gallery’s permanent
collection, divided into sections
according to historical periods, is
comprised of nearly 600 works by
Slovenian and European artists. Among
other things, it includes medieval sacred
art, works of art by the Baroque artists,
neoclassical paintings, works by the
Realists, and the famous masterpieces
of Slovenian Impressionism.
The gallery also keeps one of the largest
pieces of Baroque art in Ljubljana, the
Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers by
Francesco Robba, whose original site in
front of the Town Hall is now occupied
by its replica.
Apart from the above, the National
Plečnik Collection
The new permanent exhibition at the
Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most
important projects of the late architect.
Plečnik's creativity comes to life through
the plans, models and photographs of
his creations such as the Zacherl House
in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National
and University Library in Ljubljana,
the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale
Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the
Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other
masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s
never realized visions are also on display.
The Cathedral of Freedom, the master's
vision of the Slovenian parliament, is
especially worthy of our attention.
Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the
last guided tour at 17:00). Groups must
not contain more than seven people.
Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays
Water
24 Jun 2015 - 8 May 2016, City Museum
of Ljubljana
Through four main themes and various
timelines, the exhibition presents the
importance of water. It is essential for our
survival, the mobility of humans, goods,
ideas and knowledge, our mythologies
and beliefs, art and language. The
exhibition is also discussing water cycles
in nature, their meaning and ecology.
The first three themes build their stories
through museum artefacts among which
a larger wooden boat, presented to the
public for the very first time, deserves
a special mention. Other artefacts also
include a rich glass collection, famous
Exhibitions
Festivals
artworks by Slovenian artists and a
selection of the most important artefacts
from the collection of the Potočnik family,
originating from the riverbed of the
Ljubljanica. The fourth theme is presented
with an interactive experimental
element, primary intended for children’s
experiential workshops.
8 May at 11:00 free guided tour in English
Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 21:00. Closed: Mondays
Slovenian History
Ljubljana Castle
Slovenian History, Ljubljana Castle’s
permanent exhibition, shows the
dynamic history of Slovenia and
Ljubljana. Slovenian territory, lying at the
junction of natural routes between the
Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian
Plain, has been the point of convergence
of different peoples and cultures since
prehistory. The exhibition covers the
Slovenian history from the earliest traces
of human presence (200,000 BC) to the
landmark events following Slovenia’s
independence in 1991 and presents the
societies of the different periods, the
state formations, the political, social and
economic circumstances, migrations,
transport, culture, architecture and the
everyday life.
Open: 10:00 - 18:00 daily
Puppet Museum at Ljubljana Castle
Slovenia is a country with a rich tradition
of puppeteering. The Puppet Museum's
permanent exhibition, set up by the
Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, introduces
you to the history of puppeteering
in Slovenia and the creativity of
contemporary Slovenian puppeteers,
presents the most popular puppet
characters, and gives you an insight
into puppeteering techniques and the
process of creating a puppet show.
After viewing the exhibition, you can try
your hand at puppeteering skills.
Open: 9:00 - 18:00 daily
Lighting Guerrilla Festival: Nature
16 May - 18 Jun, various venues
Ljubljana's annual Lighting Guerrilla
festival presents a programme of light
installations set up in the city's streets,
parks, and galleries.
The festival makes public spaces across
Ljubljana come alive with all kinds of
lighting objects, exhibitions, video and
site-specific installations, screenings,
performances, and art workshops aimed
at redefining the role of public spaces
and artists in contemporary society.
The upcoming 10th edition of the
festival, held in the year of Ljubljana's
tenure as the European Green Capital,
will be dedicated to the theme of nature
in today's modern technological society.
The Catalan painter, sculptor,
and printmaker Antoni Tàpies
(1923−2012) was one of the greatest
European artists of his generation.
The exhibition brings together
a selection of his prints and art
objects. Antoni Tàpies was present
on the international scene from
the mid-1950s. His early work was
influenced by Surrealism, but he
later switched to abstract art and
was, among other things, a notable
member of the art movement
known as Art Informel. Tàpies was
attracted to relief forms and the
expressive value of non-traditional
art materials such as marble dust,
sand, and soil, which he introduced
into printmaking and developed a
number of new techniques. Tàpies
participated in several editions of
the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic
Arts, for the first time in 1967, when
he was awarded the Biennial’s
Grand Prize. His art influenced a
number of Slovenian artists.
Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

consisting of members of renowned
bands such as NOFX, Lagwagon,
Foo Fighters, and Swingin' Utters.
What is special about them is that
they only do covers of other bands'
songs.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
started off in 1995 as a side
project, but they have released a

Mario Biondi (Italy) with the RTV Slovenia Big Band
7 May, 20:00, Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture
Mario Biondi is a renowned Italian
soul singer who has often been
compared to Barry White due to
his velvety voice. At his upcoming
concert in Ljubljana, he will be
joined by the RTV Slovenia Big Band.
Biondi learned to sing in church
choirs. A major breakthrough in
his career came with the Japanese
release of his single This Is What You
Are, which was promoted by the
BBC Radio 1 DJ Norman Jay, who fell
in love with the song and played it
across Europe. Biondi's first album,
Handful of Soul, saw the light of
day in 2006 and was certified
four times platinum in just a few
months. Biondi is also well-known
for his collaborations with a range
of renowned music artists such as
Amalia Grè, Karima Ammar, Duke
Orchestra, and Renato Zero, among
others.

Alonzo King Lines Ballet is a famous
contemporary dance company
following the artistic vision of
Alonzo King, once a member of the
distinguished Alvin Ailey’s dance
troupe.
In 1982, King established his
own dance company, which he
developed in close collaboration
with a range of different musicians
and visual artists. Combining their
influences, he has since been
creating works that draw on a
diverse set of deeply rooted cultural
traditions from around the world,
imbuing classical ballet with new
expressive potential.

Mladinsko Showcase is a mini
festival organized by Ljubljana’s
Mladinsko Theatre, which has built
its reputation by constantly offering
unusual, provocative, and subversive
productions and looking for new
forms of theatrical expression.
Regularly touring its productions
internationally, the Mladinsko
Theatre has achieved huge acclaim
across Europe, the USA, and South
America, also due to the fact that
it is one of the few theatres to
have introduced foreign-language
surtitles to some of its productions
in order to bring them closer to
international audiences.
The Mladinsko Showcase festival will
feature five of Mladinsko Theatre’s
currently most relevant productions,
complete with English surtitles.

Explore the flavours of Ljubljana. Join a guided city tour including tasting
sessions of traditional Ljubljana dishes and get to know the city's culinary
offerings and their historical tradition.
The tour will give you an insight into traditional Ljubljana dishes, which are
today mostly prepared using modern cooking methods and have recently
been given a new life as part of the much-acclaimed Taste Ljubljana
project. You will visit five different styles of restaurants and taste five
different dishes as well as five selected drinks.
Today, traditional Ljubljana food and drinks are coming alive in widely
differing ways, for which reason the tour will take you to a street food
outlet, a traditional 'gostilna' restaurant with a historical concept, a modern
restaurant, another modern restaurant, this one following the model of
socially responsible entrepreneurship and a catering outlet located at a
popular lookout point. To learn about Ljubljana dishes' locally sourced
ingredients, you will also visit the Ljubljana Central Market and the
vegetable gardens located in the Krakovo area of Ljubljana.

Save the Bees - exhibition
21 May - 25 Sep Ljubljana Castle, Casemate
The exhibition draws attention to
the general threat to bees and other
pollinators in ensuring biological
diversity, and thus indirectly to the
threat to the existence of mankind and
all life on our planet.
In terms of content, the exhibition

exhibition presents bee products and
Slovenian beekeeping as a commercial
activity, while the third part presents
the rich heritage that is reflected in
specialised and literary publications, in
the cultural landscape, in the material
and immaterial heritage, and in
contemporary art. The exhibition will
