Take Stock is a statewide program, sponsored in Bay County by the Bay Education Foundation. This program offers scholarships, mentors, and hope to qualified students. Students apply for the program in grade six, and those accepted receive a unique opportunity to enhance their academic goals. Successful Take Stock scholars must maintain good grades, attendance, and behavior. They are required to remain drug and crime free, volunteer in the community and meet regularly with a mentor. Students who meet these standards receive a college scholarship as well as college readiness benefits. Funds to support these scholarships are raised locally and matched dollar-for-dollar by the legislature through the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. For more information, contact the Bay Education Foundation at 767-4111 or www.bayeducationfoundation.org. Major Donors The Bay Education Foundation salutes these major donors whose generous support in 2015 helps provide abundant opportunities for Bay County students to pursue excellence in education. With an overarching mission of promoting excellence in public education, the Bay Education Foundation addresses this mission through four programs, all of which are designed to stimulate, identify, or enhance excellence in local K-12 education. The Foundation depends on the support of over 800 individuals and organizations who are doers, not talkers. Programs: Four Reasons to Give Take Stock in Children: This is a college preparation program that provides scholarships, mentors, and hope to promising students. In general, our students begin Take Stock at the end of sixth grade and remain in the program until they graduate from college or complete a certificate program. Currently, we are serving 107 middle and high school students. All eligible grade six students are invited to apply during the January 2015 application period. Classroom Grants: Classroom teachers can apply for up to $500 to help fund innovative classroom projects that are designed to improve student achievement. Between fifty and seventy-five grants are awarded each year in four categories. All employees are invited to apply. Awards of Excellence: Showcase events such as the Three Rivers Science Fair, the Tom Barefield History Fair, the Best of Bay Student Art Show, Math Counts, and the Fifth Grade Choral Festival are designed to encourage students to produce outstanding work. Recognition events such as Teacher of the Year, Support Employee of the Year, and Principal/Assistant Principal of the Year also highlight outstanding job performance. The Foundation is proud to assist the school district with these events. Employee Tuition Assistance: Tuition assistance is provided for employees who choose to return to school to upgrade their skills in ways that benefit students and the school district. All employees are invited to apply. Donations: Four Ways to Give Sponsorships: The Foundation conducts three fund-raising events annually: Strides for Scholars, Arts Alive, and Golf FORE Education. Funds from these events are used to provide scholarships and classroom grants. Sponsorships range in price from $100 to $10,000. Memberships: Over 800 individuals make annual membership donations to the Foundation. Memberships range from $20 to $1,000 a year. Memorial Gifts: Many community members donate to the Foundation in memory of loved ones. Memorial gifts are placed in the scholarship fund or in a particular area, depending on the donor’s wishes. License Plates: Local drivers can donate to the Foundation when they purchase or renew their car tags. Drivers can either purchase the special “Support Education” tag or can elect to include a small donation to Take Stock in Children. In either case, your local foundation receives the funds. I mention this because we are now into our third generation of support for the Foundation. My wife, my three children, and I have volunteered for the Bay Education Foundation for over twenty years. Various family members have worked as mentors, board members, donors, and volunteers. We join with the hundreds of other supporters listed in Footnotes 2015 in continuing our commitment to enhance learning and teaching in Bay District Schools. Having celebrated the Foundation’s 25th anniversary last year, we are working hard to make the next twenty-five years even better. The Junior League’s Excellence in Education grants, Awards of Excellence, and Take Stock in Children are some of the initiatives that we use to support teaching and learning in Bay District Schools. A key part of our mission is promoting greater community involvement in education. You can become a part of this important work by mentoring, donating, sponsoring, or volunteering. One of our goals for the next twenty-five years is expanding our scholarship program by helping more students and by providing additional support of those with profound need. We welcome participation from all parts of our community. Please visit www.bayeducationfoundation.org orcall 850-767-4111 for more information. Sincerely, Board of Directors letter from the president Leon Walters, President FOUNDATION WELCOMES FIVE NEW BOARD MEMBERS The Bay Education Foundation is pleased that five prominent community members have joined the Board of Directors. New board members are Ryan Posey, Hare Taylor LLC; Frank Hall , Summit Bank; Tim Jernigan, Merck; Barbara Robinson, FSU; and Sandy Sims, Gulf Power Company. “We are a working board,” says Leon Walters, president of the Bay Education Foundation. “Our new board members fit in beautifully with the committed leaders we already have.” Frank Hall, Executive Vice President at Summit Bank, has a long history of serving his community and has worked on the boards of the FSU Foundation and the Gulf Coast State College Foundation. He has also been a leader in United Way and the Rotary Club. Will Jernigan, National Account Director at Merck, is a pharmacy graduate of the University of Florida and a native of Panama City. His interest in seeing able students be able to attend college is one of his motivations for joining the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Ryan Posey, CPA, has joined the board as a representative of Hare Taylor LLC. He is the CPA who works with the Foundation treasurer to ensure that funds are managed appropriately. Ryan is the product of local schools and father of four children. Barbara Robinson, Ph. D., Associate Dean at FSU-PC, comes to the Foundation board with a broad range of skills and experiences in teaching and career counseling at the college level. Her expertise promises to be very beneficial in the college preparatory work association with the Foundation’s Take Stock in Children program. Sandy Sims, District General Manager for Gulf Power, brings many years of experience serving on boards in Okaloosa and Escambia counties and an in-depth understanding of community involvement from her years serving as Gulf Power’s Community Service manager. bayeducationfoundation.org President Emeritus Joe Chapman Leon Walters President Golf FORE Education Chair • Community Volunteer Brian Baber Vice President • Arthur Rutenberg Homes Juan Andrada Secretary Strides for Scholars Chair • Thrivent Financial Services Teresa Wooten Treasurer Endowment Committee Chair • Community Volunteer Dr. Carrie Baker Classroom Grants Chair • Gulf Coast State College Larry Carroll Coldwell Banker Carroll Realty Pamm Chapman Royal American Management Nathan Creel Proper Fox Consulting LLC Dr. Brett Frank First Choice Physical Therapy Frank Hall Summit Bank Will Jernigan Merck & Co., Inc. The students and their parents signed a contract with the Foundation to focus on achievement, attendance, and attitude throughout their time in school. Students also promise to remain drug-and crime-free and to volunteer in their community. “Our Take Stock in Children provides a two-year college tuition plan to the students who meet our standards,” says Don O’Neal, scholarship committee chairman. “This is a great opportunity for sixth graders to become a part of a meaningful program that will help them develop into scholars.” New scholars include Caleb Bushnell, Bay Haven; Audrey Brooks and Melody Nguyen, Breakfast Point; Chance Locklear and MiKayla Locklear, Everitt; Abby Koss and Gabrielle Turner, Jinks; Shakirra Cook, Joshua Diaz, Abigayle Meyers, Michelle Nye, Eirick Taylor, Brooklin Ward, and Abbie Williamson, Merritt Brown; Dalton Capps, Kaziyah Cole, Eve Curths, and Grace Elliott, Mowat; Mya Martin, Yesenia Moore, and Neveah Pothoven, Palm Bay Preparatory Academy; Andrew Mayers, Adrianna McCray, and Zechariah Nelson, North Bay Haven; Sheen Wang, Surfside Middle School. In addition to the two-year tuition scholarship, the Take Stock in Children program provides mentors, staff support, and guidance to ensure that the students—many of whom are the first in their families to attend college—are prepared for the rigors of college coursework. Students also receive book scholarships from the Gulf Coast State College Foundation and the Florida State University-Panama City Foundation. ”Mentoring is an important part of Take Stock,” says Janet Kessler, Mentor Coordinator of the Bay Education Foundation. “Each new scholar will be matched with an adult mentor who will help guide and support the student during the school year.” The Foundation welcomes mentor volunteers at any time and stresses that mentoring is not tutoring. The application process and training program are brief but thorough. A number of private individuals, businesses, and organizations work to provide local funds which are matched dollar for dollar by the state through the Florida Prepaid Tuition Foundation. Major donors include the Nelson Family Foundation, the St. Joe Foundation, Allstate Construction, Thrivent Financial, and Reliant South Construction Group. The Bay Education Foundation also raises funds at its annual Golf FORE Education tournament, Strides for Scholars race and Arts Alive event to fund the scholarship program. Take Stock in Children is the best known program of the Bay Education Foundation, and mentoring is the best part of Take Stock in Children. Each Take Stock student has a mentor who, in addition to parents and school personnel, serves as a resource for the student. Being a mentor is as easy—and as hard—as being a good friend. “Mentoring is not tutoring,” emphasizes Janet Kessler, Mentor Coordinator. “We ask our mentors to encourage students to do their best in school, but mentors do not provide academic instruction.” Kessler explains that making clear the difference between mentoring and tutoring is very important when it comes to mentor recruitment. As a part of National Mentoring Month every January, the Bay Education Foundation honors an individual as Mentor of the Year, as a way to celebrate all the mentors who work in the Take Stock in Children program. For 2015, Dr. Lynn d’Albertis was selected. A data specialist, Dr. d’Albertis began her involvement with the Take Stock in Children program in Bay County because she recognized the value of the program. Like all Take Stock mentors, d’Albertis has worked diligently to “change a life over lunch” with the student she has mentored for the past six years. Her weekly meetings with her mentee, Bay High graduate Lindsey Gallagher, have helped Lindsey focus on graduating from high school and attending college. A major strategy Dr. d’Albertis used was encouraging Lindsey to try a variety of activities and classes to discover her interests and strengths. Both Lynn and Lindsey agree that their match has been a particularly strong one, as they share many interests. “Even my mom calls her my second mom,” says Gallagher. “She always knows if something is wrong and drags it out of me.” The Bay Education Foundation welcomes new volunteer mentors throughout the year. Anyone interested in learning more about mentoring and the Take Stock in Children program is urged to contact the Bay Education Foundation at 767-4111 or visit www. bayeducationfoundation.org. BAY EDUCATION FOUNDATION HONORS MENTORS 4 bayeducationfoundation.org packed with hope BE THE DIFFERENCE. BECOME A MENTOR. It takes just one hour a week to make a difference that lasts a lifetime. When you choose to mentor, you’ll offer guidance and support to a student who has the odds stacked against them. They’ll pledge to stay out of trouble, keep their grades up, and stay in school. With your help, they’ll make it happen – and they’ll earn a college scholarship in the process. Proceeds from this event are used in the Take Stock in Children scholarship program. Presented by Thrivent Financial Services, the event began near the Panama City Memorial Park and followed the safe and scenic St. Andrews route outlined in the city’s event manual. Awards and brunch followed the Fun Run at the school district’s main offices in the Nelson Building on Balboa Avenue. “Thrivent enjoys sponsoring this event,” said Juan Andrada, event chair and sponsor. “We are focused on supporting the communities where our customers work and play.” Other sponsors of Strides for Scholars 2015 included Arthur Rutenberg Homes; Dr. Charles Voorhis; InkTrax; and WHATABURGER. In addition to awards for individuals, this event also includes a competition among schools for the largest number of participants. Northside Elementary School has dominated this contest for all four years. An additional award, the Superintendent’s Silver Shoe Trophy, was introduced in 2015 and goes to the school with the fastest average time. Mosley High School was the first winner of this rotating trophy. “We would love to grow to a thousand runners,” says Lori Hast, principal of the Margaret K. Lewis School in Millville, who will cochair the event in 2016. “We hope more people will join us next year.” If you are willing to help grow this event, mark your calendar for the fifth annual Strides for Scholars event, which will be held on February 27, 2016. Runners will be able to sign up through active.com or www.bayeducationfoundation.org later in the fall. For information about sponsoring this event, please contact Janet Kessler at 767-4111. Junior League-Excellence in Education A total of 4,620 kids benefited from the Excellence in Education grant program during the most recent school year. Together, the Junior League and the Bay Education Foundation provided almost $31,000 to fund sixty-two classroom projects during the 201415 school year. Projects designed to promote literacy, build STEM skills, or provide career/technical education helped students in elementary, middle, and high schools. “I want everybody to know what a huge difference the Junior League makes in our schools,” says Beth Deluzain, Executive 8 Director of the Bay Education Foundation. “Many of these projects are among the most exciting, meaningful activities the students will do during the school year.” Many Excellence in Education projects create unique learning experiences. One of the most intriguing projects, “Hatch a Batch,” helped Cherry Street students explore life cycles of animals and plants by hatching ducks, chickens, butterflies, and lady bugs in their classroom. Another project funded a series of “grab and go” lab activities for physical science classrooms at Everitt bayeducationfoundation.org Middle School. At Rosenwald High School, students have been able to create gardens and distributed produce to the local community in a program that has received national recognition, learning both science and life lessons. Applications for the next round of Excellence in Education grants are due September 14, 2015. Any Bay District employee may apply for grant to impact student learning. Allstate Construction presented the fifth edition of Arts Alive on April 4, 2015, at Edgewater Beach Resort to raise funds for the Bay Education Foundation’s Take Stock in Children and Classroom Grants programs. The reception provided time to catch up with friends, sample hors d’oeuvres, view the visual arts gallery, and place a bid in the silent auction. Following the reception, guests enjoyed a three-course dinner, a live auction, and an amazing variety show featuring the best performers in Bay District Schools. “The theme of this event is always a great time for a great cause,” said Jennifer Watson, Arts Alive chairman. “We keep the focus on fun, and our patrons really appreciate that.” Watson served as the producer of the event and Sharon Carroll, a highly regarded local performer, designed and directed the show. Auditions Any student or employee in Bay District Schools was eligible to apply for auditions, which took place on January 9 & 10, 2015. A panel of out-of-town judges evaluates the acts and creates the cast to ensure a wellrounded variety show for the audience. In addition to controlling the quality of the event, the audition process also gives performers a very realistic learning experience. 10 Sponsors The Bay Education Foundation is grateful to the sponsors and donors who made this event a success. Allstate Construction was the presenting sponsor for 2015. Other major sponsors include Panhandle Educators Federal Credit Union, Gulf Power Company, Royal American Management, Inc., Trustmark Bank, the Eye Center of North Florida, and the Gulf Coast State College. Over 150 other businesses and inviduals sponsored tables and provided items for the silent auction. Volunteers In addition to outstanding performers and generous sponsors, Arts Alive relies on a large number of volunteers to help run the event. From greeters in cocktail dresses to stagehands in jeans, our volunteers ensure that guests enjoy a first-class experience.
