CLUB NEWS
After a disappointing loss to the Japanese team this past Saturday, the whole of South Africa is very
negative about the Springboks plans to win the world cup. I for one think that this was a ploy to
ensure we have an easier road to the world cup final. However, we were outplayed in every facet of
the game and Eddie Jones’ tactics worked perfectly in their favour and credit needs to be given
where it’s due. The Boks do need to dig deep to beat the Samoans on Saturday in Birmingham as
their physical nature is always a massive factor but I am confident that the team will surprise us and
put in a winning effort. South Africa is way too proud a nation not to stand up after this shock loss to
one of the minnows in the World Cup. Let’s stand behind the team and support them all the way.

2. VERTIDRAINING
Please note that the course will be vertidrained next week. The course will be closed on Monday &
Tuesday morning (28 & 29 September 2015) and it will reopen on Tuesday afternoon at 11:30 for
play.
The process of vertidraining is much less intrusive than hollowtining where we take out cores from
the greens and replace this with topdressing. The hollowtining process takes about a week and is
done generally in the beginning of the year at Irene Country Club. The vertidraining process takes a
day or two and the recovery rates of the course will also be much quicker.
The Vertidrain is a machine that can be used to de-compact both deep and shallow turf compaction
as well as aerate turf in situations where minimal surface disruption is important. This is a popular
machine for maintenance of golfing greens, sports fields and football stadiums and has many
important roles in turf renovation, maintenance and rejuvenation. The Vertidrain operates by driving
an array of tines into the turf profile at regular spacings and various depths.
The core holes encourage deep rooting and assist water and nutrient penetration.
The benefits of vertidraining are long term and dynamic. Aeration and de-compaction helps the
natural bio system and structure of the soil. Deeper and more vigorous roots mean stronger,
healthier turf that is more resistant to wear, disease and pests, requires less water and is more
drought tolerant.
During the process of vertidraining will also be interseeding certain greens with DOMINATOR PLUS
bent grass to fight the POA on those greens. We are very privileged that the greens at Irene Country
Club have very little POA on them and the we are continiously fighting to ensure we have great
playing surfaces.

1. POTJIEKOS COMPETITION
A very successful potjiekos event took place on Saturday 19 September at the Villagers Cricket field.
Thank you to all the supporters of the event. The day started off gloomy but finished off being a
normal South African sunny day. The camaraderie between the contestants were great to see and
we are looking forward to next year’s event already.
