Summary Report Air Purifier Project (VOCs) October 31, 2006 Introduction 10/12/06 to 10/17/06. This research project consisted of setting up a 6’x6’x4’ air tight sampling chamber and testing the effectiveness of an air purifier, supplied for particulate counts, sound level, velocity check, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Particle counts ranging from 0.3 microns to 5.0 microns were measured using the ART Instruments, Inc. HHPC-6 Airborne Particle Counter that was connected to the inside of the chamber via a Teflon tubing. The sound level test (Quest 210 Sound Level Meter) was performed at a distance of 3 meters. The sound level measurement was performed prior to the chamber testing. The velocity check (TSI VelociCheck) testing was also performed prior to the chamber testing. The velocity of the unit was measured at the air delivery panel section. A standard consisting of 36 known compound concentrations was injected into the chamber. Samples were then taken into Summa canisters at different time periods with the purifier unit running. The canisters were then tested for the VOCs, and the results were tabulated. At the start of each time interval, the particle counter was also turned “ON” monitoring the particle counts. Chamber Structure and Building Up Figure 1 shows the structure of the chamber. A 6’X6’X4’ chamber frame was built using steel angle poles. All chamber wall materials are wood compress with plastic coating on the inside faces. The air purifier was placed at one end of the chamber. The sampling line (used to inject the standard and take the samples) was positioned near the air outlet towards the top of the chamber. The total volume of the chamber is 144 cubic feet. All of the internal joint lines were sealed with sweet rice glue pasted onto ordinary office paper. Sweet rice glue was used because it contains no VOCs. VORNADO AIR, LLC . 415 East 13th Street . Andover, KS 67002 phone: 316.733.0035 . fax: 316.733.1544 . www.vornado.com Figure 1. Structure the Testing Chamber Figure 1. Structure of the of Testing Chamber Experiment Experiment A standard gas with VOCs was injected into the chamber through the sampling line. The purifier fan was turned on, and the VOCs were circulated throughout the chamber. A sample was then collected as a baseline measurement (called 0 hour) into a 6L stainless steel Summa canister. The air purifier was then turned on, and separate canister samples were taken at 5min, 15min, 30min, 60min, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours, respectively. The canisters were analyzed for VOCs using a Hewlett Packard GC/MS following EPA method TO-14. The particle counts were also documented at the start of each of the times listed above Results The attached data package includes all the individual analytical results at the different time intervals. A data summary report is also included tabulating the air purifier tested and the results obtained. A VOC degradation graph along with particle count, velocity check, and sound level testing is also included.
