ON THE COVER: Gail Hawes is a Union native with strong roots at Union Fair. Between helping her father at the Fairgrounds
in the off-season, and showing cattle with her aunt and uncle, Union Fair was always the highlight of her summer growing up. After
being away at school for a number of years, Gail settled back in Union in 1999 with her family. She once again became involved in
the Fair, first by showing sheep with her two daughters, and then becoming a volunteer with the organization. Art and photography
recently have become a new focus for Gail.
“I found the inspiration for the design for the poster thinking about things that I really enjoy about the Fair. My girls raised
racing pigs for 4-H, and we had a great time with that project. It was so much fun to see happy kids and well cared-for pigs at the
Fair. The pigs loved grapes, and would greet the girls at the fence, waiting for their treats. This is just one of many happy memories
from the Fair. I’m thrilled my design was chosen to represent the 2016 Union Fair.” — Gail Hawes

2016 UNION FAIR
Dear Exhibitors
This book has been designed to inform exhibitors of rules and premium amounts while hopefully enticing new
participants. We encourage you to use the book for information. We hope that it is a streamlined, useful tool. Individual
events will have date and time stated. We have included entry forms with deadline dates. You will find rules that apply
to various contests and prize money that will be presented. We encourage you to participate. If you have received this
premium book and will not be participating this year we would appreciate it if you handed the book on to a friend who
might like to exhibit.
Our overall program will also be available as a separate flyer. Many of you will receive it through target marketing
efforts. These flyers will also be available in many local stores and area Chambers of Commerce. The program will also
be listed on the Union Fair website, unionfair.org.
As the world increasingly goes toward eliminating paper, we will also have the premium book posted on our website.
There people will be able to download individual pages of the premium book in the areas of interest. Looking toward the
future there may come a day when this book will no longer be prepared in paper form but be only available online. It is
through production by Courier Publications that we are still able to provide this premium book to 1,250 exhibitors. We
thank them for their continued support of this project.

Do you have any special interests at the fair?
I want to be on the volunteer contact list.
I want to volunteer during fair week:
I could do a low-profile, easy job
I could do some physical work
I could do a job that works with the public (info booth, judge, coordinator, etc)
I would be available to volunteer at non-fair events.
I would be available to help with pre-fair preparation.
Do you have any other comments or suggestions?

2016 UNION FAIR
Maine Wild Blueberry Queen
The Maine Wild Blueberry
Festival at Union Fair was born in
1960 as a method of promoting
the blueberry industry in Maine.
Choosing a Blueberry Queen
became an added feature in
1961. Each contestant had to be
sponsored by a blueberry packer
or processor and would be chosen
to represent the industry for a
year. There were 13 contestants
and Monalee Smith became Union
Fair’s first queen. Union Fair was
so committed to the festival that
it petitioned the legislature, which
formally changed our title to Union
Fair, Maine Wild Blueberry Festival.
Flash forward 55 years and see
that not much has changed about
the festival but a good number
of features have been added. You
will still be able to see youngsters
compete to see who can eat the
most pie in a given amount of
time. You will still be able to watch
the judging to see who wins the
coveted title of best pie baker,
though there are also contests for
best blueberry muffin and blueberry
dessert. Young people ages 6-15
also have a baking category of their
own, and yes, we still crown the
Blueberry Queen to represent the
industry and state in the promotion
of the state of Maine’s number
one fruit, the “wild” blueberry
throughout the year. The Queen
even has her own Facebook page
now...come on, take a look. The
Queen’s Corner can be found in
Blueberry Acres where children (or
adults) can have their picture taken
with the queen.
Would you like to be an
ambassador of the blueberry
industry as our Maine Wild
Blueberry Queen? If so, go to
unionfair.org and download an
application to run to be a Maine
Wild Blueberry Princess!
Appearances by the queen

are designed to promote Maine’s
wild blueberries and Union Fair.
The queen appears in statewide
parades, special state events,
various charitable events and has
an opportunity to tour blueberry
processing plants.
Are you a high school graduate
between the ages of 17-22, single
and a Maine resident? Well, we are
looking for someone just like you!
Come on, think about it.
The Coronation is the Friday of

2016 UNION FAIR
WELCOME TO THE 2016 EXHIBITION HALL
There’s a new look in the Exhibition Hall this year! There have been some structural changes that will
make it easier to view all the displays and also make it easier for the exhibitors to gain access to the booths.
We hope you come out to see what we have done in order to make the hall more “user friendly” and enjoy
looking at all the exhibits that have been entered.
We have also made many changes regarding the exhibits. There are several classes that encourage children
to enter their own exhibits including Lego creations! The vegetable area now has opportunities for basket
displays. We have added a dairy and poultry class and a fruit class. We have brought back the “Dress Your
Zucchini” contest to help folks (young and older) to find a creative use for that prolific veggie!
We have added a wider variety of categories in the art and photography section. To encourage photos of
Union Fair Maine Wild Blueberry Festival we are starting an annual challenge to photographers to submit their
favorite picture of an activity during Fair Week. Those photos will become property of Union Fair.
Contests, contests, contests! This year we are adding several cooking contests, some craft contests, and
some more games! In addition to the Cribbage Tournament, the Connect 4 Tournament, we are adding a
Zucchini Derby!
The 2nd Annual Union Fair Maine Wild Blueberry Festival Quilt Raffle is back with the theme “Down on
the Farm.” The queen-sized quilt will be on display all week and will be raffled off on Friday night during the
Blueberry Queen festivities. Come in, vote for the square that you like the best and buy some tickets. You
could be the one to take it home!
There’s something for everyone at the Exhibition Hall. There will be speakers and demonstrations. The
Methodist Church Café serves some great food. Come in and see for yourself what goes on at the Exhibition
Hall. It’s a great place to sit, relax, listen to “Miles at the Keyboard” and maybe even visit with old friends.

Youth Market Beef and Lamb Sale
Show: Sunday, August 21, 2016, 4 PM
Auction: Monday, August 22, 2016, 6:30 PM
This year the Union Fair is happy to host the third annual Youth Market Beef and Lamb Sale. This is an opportunity for our
local youth to take part in a year-long project to raise a beef steer or market lamb that they will then sell at auction. This provides
a great educational opportunity as well as offering high quality beef and lamb to the local market. Support both our local youth
and future farmers by bidding and buying one at the auction this year. For more information on the sale please see our web site
or if you have questions, please call Barry Norris at (207) 462-0857 or email Heidi Baker at [email protected].
2016 UNION FAIR
Poultry Showmanship
Sunday, August 21, 2016, 1 PM
Showmanship provides young people with an

conditioning, evaluating and handling poultry. In the
process young people learn to express themselves and
develop self-confidence and sportsmanship.
Sign up at the poultry barn to join in the fun on
Sunday, August 21 at 1 p.m. When you sign up, if
you wish, you will be given a folder with some of the
information you will need for the competition. You do
not need to have your showmanship bird entered in the
poultry show. However, your showmanship bird is subject
to the same rules and regulations as any bird entered in
the poultry show. It must be tested and rated Pullorum
Typhoid clean. Any bird showing signs of disease or vermin
shall be removed from the fair grounds.

Horse and Ox Drawing Rules
Adapted from the Maine Draft Horse and Ox Association
Show proof of $1,000,000 Liability Insurance
The object of the rules is to:
A) INSURE PROPER TREATMENT OF ANIMAL.
B) Raise the standard of Horse and Ox drawing
C) Stimulate interest in Horse and Ox drawing among the general public
D) Facilitate the efficient staging of Horse and Ox drawing contests.
RULE 1 - STARTING TIME:
All teamsters to compete in the contest shall have their teams ready at the published starting time. All classes
shall be closed after the positions are drawn. Classes shall start as nearly as possible to published time.
RULE 2 - DRAWING OF POSITIONS:
Entries in all class pulling for both oxen and draft horses open to State of Maine and New England. Numbers
shall be placed in a container according to the position the team weighed-in or entered. A disinterested person
at ringside shall draw all the numbers to determine the positions the team shall draw. There must be a contest in
each class.
RULE 3 - WEIGHING IN:
Official weigh-in shall start for all horses, other than “Free-For-All” teams not earlier than three (3) hours
or later than one and one-half (1 1/2) hours before class of the day is to start. The first part of this rule will
not apply when there are two classes, one following immediately after the other. Check weighing will be allowed
prior to official weigh-in. Official weigh-in will allow one weigh-in only by same team of horses. Team must have
leather halters and shoes on. Even weight only. Nothing extra for shoes and halter. All horses will be weighed
in the presence of a delegate appointed by the Fair or person who is conducting the contest. The delegate shall
present a weigh bill to the teamster, a copy of which is to be kept by the delegate, certifying the horses’ names and
descriptions, also the exact time of weighing. The scale shall be balanced with a man standing on same; this man
will hold all horses where possible. Anyone weighing one horse but pulling another in its place shall be barred
from pulling for one year. Fair superintendents or person weighing shall notify the Maine Draft Horse and Ox
Association, and in turn, fair superintendents of all fairs shall be notified.
RULE 4 - MEASURING:
Measuring shall be in a straight line to the nearest point of the drag. Line to line measure will be allowed. The
front of the drag must touch the line before turning. To get the full line measure, drag must be turned more than
one/half way or completely out over the line.
RULE 5 - UNHITCHING:
Team shall stay hooked to the drag at all times until time is up or the teamster wishes to stop pulling. No
unhitching and rehitching is allowed.
RULE 6 - BREAK-DOWN:
An actual separation, breaking or bending of equipment shall constitute a breakdown. Chains, straps, eveners
not properly secured, or snarling of horses are not considered a break-down. Any team breaking down can take
the distance pulled or return to the last position and pull over. Only one (1) break-down is allowed.
RULE 7 - TIME LIMIT:
On distance, pull five (5) minutes, unless otherwise agreed upon by the teamsters before pulling time. The
time shall be kept by the announcer or appointed time keeper. The drag may not be pulled out and reset by the
Page 46

pit crew unless they are unable to reset between lines or agreed upon by all teamsters. Teams shall remain in the
ring at all times until they are dismissed by the Superintendent. In case of a tie on the longest distance, the second
longest distance already pulled will take top placing. No teamster may be changed after pulling the first load, in
any class, except in an emergency. Then only when permitted by the judges with the consent of the majority of
the teamsters in the class. There shall be no assistance from evener tenders other than hitching. There shall be no
heading of horses, whatsoever. Teams are to be driven by one teamster only. One inch or more constitutes a hitch.
Starting point shall be properly marked to indicate same starting point for all loads. In short pulls, when the top
teams quit, one team must hitch to winning load to prove his win.
RULE 8 - USE OF REINS AND WHIPS AND GOADS:
On Horses: The light use of reins on the hindquarters only, no over and under will be allowed. No whips,
brads or goads will be allowed. Reins shall not be doubled up. No electric or electronic devices will be allowed.
No open bridles will be allowed. On Oxen: The use of the goad shall be very light. The goad shall have no
brad in it. Only a plain yoke and chain or pole may be pulled, with all bull rings, ropes, halter, etc., barred. All
chains shall be covered to the hook. No plastic goads shall be allowed. The goad stick must not be over 4 feet
long and must not exceed one/half inch in diameter on the small end, blunt on both ends. The goad stick may
be taped with tape, but not weighted. The goad stick may be used lightly on the face to control the oxen, but
not around the eyes.
RULE 9 - HELPERS:
Any number of helpers will be allowed to help hitch. After hitched on, two (2) helpers only. They shall stay
behind the drag unless needed to help teamster in snarls or turns. On oxen, the helper shall stay behind the drag
at all times after hitch-on. The helper shall not have a stick.
RULE 10 - GENERAL:
All participants will be properly dressed. Proper language must be used at all times. Any participant under
the influence of liquor will be disqualified from contest. Tests may be administered to determine intoxication. The
drinking of intoxicating beverages in and around the ring is prohibited.
RULE 11 - STALLS:
Stalls shall not be used for sleeping quarters if needed for horses.
RULE 12 - USE OF DRUGS:
Use of drugs or stimulant is prohibited. The Fair or person conducting contest reserves the right to administer
any type of test deemed necessary to any animal after pulling. The owner and teamster found to have used a drug
or stimulant on an animal shall be barred from this pulling for two years, as required by section 74-A, chapter
226.
RULE 13 - ELIMINATION CONTESTS:
Starting load shall be determined by superintendent. Added loads in each class at the discretion of the judges,
dependent on the ring. At no time after weight has been increased, may it be decreased. OVER THE RAIL: If a
horse’s foot strides over the line, it will count as a hitch, with no count for distance pulled. Teams must remain
within the lines while hitched to the drag. ANY TEAM DELIBERATELY DRIVEN OVER THE LINE SHALL BE
DISQUALIFIED FROM THE CONTEST.
RULE 14 – TEAMSTERS:
Teamsters must stay behind horses’ rumps at all times when pulling.
RULE 15 - CARE OF PULLING RING:
The ring will be taken care of as good as it is possible by Fair and person conducting contest to have an even
and fair pull. Grading and covering the ring helps.

Rules to Govern Horse & Ox Drawing Continued
RULE 16 - VARIATIONS:
Any situation that may arise and is not covered by these rules, the decision will be left to the discretion of the
judges.
RULE 17 - RECOMMENDATIONS:
By vote of the Maine Draft Horse and Ox Association, it was decided to weigh oxen for the several classes
instead of to measure them by a girth chain. All animals entered at this meeting are at owners’ risk and subject
to all rules and regulations of this Association. The owners or their agents agree to indemnify the management
against all claims, demands, suits and expenses arising out of an injury to any person or damage to any property
caused by his animal, attendant or himself, and this rule is part of this contract. The management reserves the right
to accept or reject any entry, to close or reopen any class, to set ahead or change program if deemed necessary for
the best interest of the Fair. No entries accepted on teams after 10:00 a.m. on day on which class pulls.
RULE 18 - INTERFERENCE
“No interference with any judges, State Veterinarian or State official will be allowed when these men are
discharging their duties. Any abusive language by the exhibitor or their attendants shall make these exhibitors
liable to be suspended from the privileges of this fair, by the Livestock Superintendents, and forfeit all prize
money.”
RULE 19 - INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Warts will be classified as an Infectious Disease. The practice of removal of warts from livestock on the
fairgrounds during fairs will not be condoned by the Maine Department of Agriculture No Brucellosis or Tuberculin
test is required for cattle in the State if they originate directly from herds with the State, not under quarantine.
RULE 20 - CONDITION OF ANIMALS
Any animal which is thin, or dehydrated, or is lame, or shows open sores may not be allowed to pull. This
decision is at the discretion of any of the Directors, thus relieving the superintendent of some of his work load.
(a) That all horses, ponies and oxen and steers shall be offered all the clean water they need to drink just prior
to being weighed, for determination as to which class they are eligible to enter. (b) That the above shall not apply
to sweepstakes classes where weighing is not required.
RULE 21 - INSURANCE
Before a team is allowed to pull, the owner must show proof of insurance providing a certificate of insurance
in the amount of $1,000,000.00.
Rules for 6-Foot Pull
Contestants must own all animals and no animal shall be allowed to compete in more than two classes.
Drivers shall name the team they are going to drive before drawing numbers for position. The official pull of distance shall be a
continuous forward movement of not less than three (3) minutes for each draw. Teams may start boat from any spot from starting
point provided boat is not out six (6) feet. As soon, however, as boat is out more than six (6) feet, and two or more draws have
been made, the boat shall be set back to starting point. At any time the driver has the right to request that the boat be set back
and time will be taken out for this purpose. The load after the initial load may be increased as the judges may require.
Drivers will be allowed to help hitch team to boat: in all cases, however, the helper must step back, as soon as the hitch is
made, a distance prescribed by the judges. Teams shall have only one driver and no driver can be changed during the draw
unless permitted by the judges with the consent of the other drivers in the class. No team shall be allowed outside the rails
of the course after being hitched to the boat. The decision of a majority of the judges concerning any matter arising in
connection with the draw shall be final. Horses, oxen or drivers may be disqualified at any time by the judges, because the
contesting team’s condition is such as to render it cruel or inadvisable to permit the horses or oxen to proceed further.

By a “KIT”, we mean articles made of pre-cut or preformed pieces that are only assembled by the 4-Her.
3. Members may enter up to 8 exhibits with a maximum of
3 entries in any one project area.
(e.g. Plant Science & Crops – enter three different
types of vegetables; Sewing & Needlecrafts – one
apron, one pillow, one drawstring bag).
4. Completed Exhibition Hall Entry Forms should be sent to
UMaine Extension, Knox-Lincoln Office, 377 Manktown

Knox-Lincoln Extension office for assistance or extra
forms at 1-800-244-2104 or [email protected].
5. Each entry must have a completed 4-H Exhibit/Judging
Card and Life Skills Card securely attached to it and
should be obtained from the Extension office before
the fair. Attach the card with string only (no tape
please). The cards must be filled out neatly by the 4-H
member *before entering the item for competition.
Notice to Leader or Parent: Any special circumstances,
such as a learning or physical disability, should be
noted by an explanation attached to the Exhibit Card.
6. Exhibits must conform to entry requirements. The fair
will afford the best protection possible for project
exhibits. However, UMaine Extension and the Union
Fair distinctly disclaim any liability for loss or damage
to exhibits. There is no security.
7. *Poster and artwork sizes cannot exceed 24” x 36” due
to space limitations. No 3-panel displays accepted.

be accepted for judging at any other time. Items
not submitted during this time period will not be
considered for premiums or Cloverbud honorariums.
9. Judging will be done on the “Danish System”. Each
worthy exhibit will be awarded a ribbon and premium
based on how well it displays the appropriate skills
for a member’s age and skill level with the exception
of Cloverbuds. Cloverbuds will receive a participation
ribbon and honorarium for every item they exhibit in
the Exhibition Hall. Cloverbuds will not be included
in the judging process. No premiums will be awarded
to 4-H members in this age group. Keep in mind that
quality is being judged, not quantity.

Union Fair Exhibitor Guidelines & Premiums
Aug. 20-27, 2016
2016 UNION FAIR
4-H General Livestock and Other Animal Rules
(Rules change each year, so please read carefully)
In order to participate in the fair, health regulations of the State
of Maine must be met by all animals. All livestock must be
inoculated for rabies and have a rabies certificate dated at least
30 days prior to the fair (when applicable).
The following rules apply to all 4-H animal shows and non-competitive
Animal Demonstrations (i.e. Cloverbud Demonstrations). Also see
specific rules relating to the show or demonstration in which you
are participating.
1. All entrants must submit a 4-H Livestock, Horse and/or Small
Domestic Animal & Pet entry form along with a copy of proof
of livestock insurance, to UMaine Extension, Knox-Lincoln
County Office at 377 Manktown Road, Waldoboro, ME 04572,
by July 31, 2016. Contact Pamela Doherty at the Knox-Lincoln
Extension office for assistance or extra forms at 1-800-244-2104
or [email protected]. Entrants will be accepted on first
come, first serve basis as space permits.
2. To participate, entrants are expected to provide the following papers
at check-in before the show:
• Approval Form for 4-H Animal Show - This may be obtained
from your Extension office or online http://extension.umaine.
edu/4h/forms. The form submitted must be a double-sided,
embossed official copy.
NOTE: Rabbits, poultry and small pets (except dogs) will no
longer need to be listed on animal approval forms. Members
must follow all fair rules concerning the number of animals
permitted in shows and will be required to present to fair officials
any licenses, registration papers, or certificates of health required
by fairs or the state of Maine.
• Registration papers (if animal is registered)
• Lease Papers (if animal is leased)
• Health Records (if available and as required where indicated)
• Proof of Livestock Insurance (send a copy with your entry)
NOTE: Per the Maine Association of Livestock Exhibitors: “When
a 4-H’er leases an animal; both the person leasing the animal and
the owner of the animal should belong to the ME Association of
Livestock Exhibitors or have proof of other liability insurance. If
anything happens and there is a claim, most likely the person in
control (4-H’er) and the owner will be liable. This is something you
may want to pass along as when fairs ask for proof of insurance,
usually only the person showing the animal shows proof. However,
is advisable for the owner to be aware that they also should have
coverage.”
3. “4-H Age” is defined as the age of the 4-H member as of December 31st
of the current 4-H year (October - September). All ages listed below
and listed in individual 4-H livestock show rules are 4-H ages:
• 4-H exhibitors must be 4-H aged 9 to 18 in order to show in any
4-H animal show.
• No intact males may be shown with the exception of ram lambs
and rabbits. Collars and/or halters are required. A lead line is
permitted in the show ring.
4. 4-H youth are responsible for fitting their animals. Adults should
not prepare member’s animals for showing.
5. 4-H members are allowed to assist other member’s animals when an
exhibitor is showing more than one animal in a class, or with
4-H novice exhibitors. Assistants must be at least 9 years old as
of December 31st of the current 4-H year (October - September).
Adults (other than judge and scribe) should refrain from entering
the ring during the livestock shows.
6. Leased animals will be permitted in the 4-H shows.
• There may be only one 4-H member per leased animal with
the exception of horse, for which two members are permitted
to lease the same horse. Up to two members who are not
in the same family are permitted to lease the same horse or
more than two family members if they reside in the same
household.
• No more than 20 animals of each type may be leased by one 4Her. All leased animals should be listed on the lease form and the
animal approval form.
• 4-H members must fit the animal that they show.
• It is expected that a 4-H member with a leased animal project
will assist with the care, maintenance, and training of that animal.
Documentation of this commitment should be noted in the
youth’s 4-H Project Record.
7. All animals must be under the control of the 4-H member (or, for
Cloverbud demonstrations, an adult/experienced teen member) at
all times. Use of a halter, collar, or lead line is acceptable for large
animals. Poultry, rabbits and other small domestic animals must
be in appropriate carriers.
8. Health regulations of the State of Maine must be met by all
animals. In addition, all cattle, sheep, horses, cats, and dogs
brought to the Union Fair must be vaccinated against rabies
(see Open Show Livestock Rules in the Union Fair book).
9. From the Maine State 4-H Office: 4-Hers attending 4-H horse
events in 2016 must provide proof of current, annual vaccination
for rabies as well as a current Coggins test done by a veterinarian.
EVH-1 and Equine Influenza are also required, horse owners
may, however administer their own EVH-1 and Equine Influenza
inoculations and a sales receipt will be sufficient evidence for

Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage
Come in to experience what Maine life was like over
the past 300 years. Often referred to as “Maine’s best kept
secret”, Matthews Museum welcomes you with numerous
exhibits from Maine’s history.
In 1965, the Union Fair Committee purchased and
began displaying the personal collection of local resident
and collector, Edwards A. Matthews. Currently the museum
holds more than 10,000 items which are on display.
A highlight of the museum is the Collins, Wingate and
Little one-horse shay manufactured in Union. One of only
two known to have survived. It was recently restored and
joined a vintage mail wagon and hearse.
Experience the music of Reverend Ufford, listen to the
Edison record player, and shell corn the old-fashioned way.
Other interactive displays will also be available throughout
fair week.
A highlight of the museum is the 32 foot tall Moxie
Bottle Stand. Built in 1906, it was used as a traveling exhibit
advertising Moxie, once America’s largest selling soda. The
Bottle Stand is the only one of its kind remaining in America.
Also on display are hundreds of Moxie memorabilia items
produced since 1884 to advertise America’s oldest and
Maine’s Official Soft Drink. On Wednesday during the fair,
enjoy ice cold Moxie samples.
Other exhibits in the museum include items from the
home and office of former Governor and Mrs. Frederick
Payne of Waldoboro, Maine, a typical pantry and kitchen
from the 19th Century, a sewing room, coopers (barrel
makers) shop, extensive tool displays, and numerous displays
of toys, dolls, farm and barn equipment, as well as numerous
household furnishings.
Hodge School, which operated from 1864 to 1954 in
Washington, Maine, is a complete one-room school house
located next to the museum. Bringing back memories
to seniors and showing youth what schools were like
in the “good old days”, it’s a gem from the past. Special
presentations are available in the school during fair week.
Supported by memberships and donations, the Museum
is also open regularly Wednesday through Saturday, noon to
4 PM during July and August. A totally volunteer operation,
the Museum is supported by sales of Moxie memorabilia,
reproduction toys and various reference books.
