Fall 2016 Class Descriptions The REALM Creative Academy Please review the Fall 2016 Class Schedule for age ranges of classes. Adventures in Art (Linda) This class is about mixing medias and dabbling in all areas of the process of creating 2 and 3 dimensional art. We will experiment with sculpting, painting and collage, while enjoying the process of imagination and creation. Algebra: Factoring & Working with Quadratics (Joe) MUST MEET ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS. Please contact The REALM ([email protected]) prior to registration. If you registered but are not on the eligibility list, you will be un-enrolled; this will result in a $5 charge. In Algebra: Factoring and Working with Quadratics, students who have experience in working with polynomials, and with solving, and graphing linear equations, will advance to the next algebraic level and discover what happens when linear expressions are multiplied together. Students will learn basic factoring, completing the square and how to derive and use the quadratic equation. Along the way, students will gain experience working with exponents and radical expressions, and be introduced to the concept of imaginary numbers. Students will learn basic rules of working with variables and exponents. They will practice exercises that require an understanding of order of operations, like and unlike terms, the distributive property, and positive and negative numbers. Students will learn to solve and graph linear equations. They will learn about slopes and intercepts and be able to work with the slope-intercept form, the point-slope form, and the standard form of linear equations. Algebra: Polynomials, students will have an opportunity to develop an understanding, familiarity and expertise in Beginning Algebra concepts and operations. Students will learn basic rules of working with variables, exponents, and radical expressions. Students will learn to add, subtract, multiply, divide and factor polynomials. The Almost Whole Story: Fractions & Decimals (Bonnie) Fractions and Decimals are saying the exact same thing, just in two different mathematical languages. We will work to help your child see that the message is the same. This team taught class breaks the number ONE into parts, in the most engaging of ways. Students will increase both their numbers’ sense and their study skills, through taking clear notes and using their notebooks as a resource. Amusement Park Math (Jessica) Do you love roller coasters? Or buying delicious snacks at concession stands? How about timing a fast pass so that you avoid lines? Then you will love creating your own amusement park, full of rides, food, tickets, people, and whatever else your imagination can inspire. Learn time, money, ratio, measurement, engineering, budgeting, and so much more! Everyone hands up and get ready for the ride of your life! Animal Activists (Kimber) In this exciting class, students will be actively working towards helping animals, protecting animal rights and preservation. Animal protection goes hand-in-hand with student's ever-increasing sense of compassion and desire to make a difference in the world. What a perfect place to have lively discussions, make fun animal art and create loving care projects that will stimulate students to think about and discover ways to help all kinds of animals! Throughout history, certain people have made an impact on furthering animal awareness and education, conservation and preservation. Through fun facts and interesting stories, students will also explore the powerful contributions from important people like Jane Goodall (chimpanzees), Dian Fossey (gorillas) and Jacques Cousteau (marine life), as well as many other people who have made a difference in our world- and in the world of animals. Students will then join the ranks of these activists and get wildly creative as they stand up for their beliefs about protecting animal rights and preventing the suffering of animals, work on wildlife conservation, create cool projects- and help to spread the word. Animal Adaptations (Linda) In an ever-changing world filled with a huge diversity of harsh environments, nature has devised an ingenious way for animals to survive – adaptation. Through behavior and physical attributes that may appear bizarre at first, animals have adapted to the frozen tundra, as well as the deepest depths of ocean trenches and deserts. They have developed crazy ways to defend, hide and court each other in a dance called survival of the fittest. Animal Atlas (Kimber) Through a wide variety of imaginative projects, fascinating stories, visual presentations and fun hands-on activities, students will travel the globe and through the nature world- and gallop, soar, crawl and swim with the creatures in the amazing animal kingdom. With emphasis on geography and ever-changing habitats around the world, students will journey through different countries to meet every kind of animal imaginable, from the familiar to the extraordinary. Students will discover wild and wonderful creatures like the walking Red-Lipped Batfish of the Galapagos Islands and about the Chinese Water Deer with their vampire tusks. And let's not forget about the dread-headed Bergamasco Shepard or the giraffe necked Gerenuks. As students travel, they will learn about the connection between geography, terrain and weather to different animals and their characteristics, adaptive qualities and life skills. Students will be challenged to think about... why do some countries or regions have unique animals not seen anywhere else? Exactly how does different geography affect animal selection and development? How do different habitats around the world support different animals? What adaptations allow animals to survive and thrive? App Development (Digital Dragon) Don’t just consume tech; create it! Start your journey as a tech entrepreneur by learning to identify problems and build digital solutions in the form of your very own mobile apps. Students will learn the ins and outs of App Inventor, a visual block-based mobile app building tool developed by MIT, and use it to build useful and innovative applications. Art History: Modern to Contemporary (Linda) What were the major art movements from the late 1800’s on and who were the great artists that made their marks on society? We will create a timeline of our own inspired works of art from impressionism to abstract. We will decipher pop art from Op art, surrealism vs. realism and is it Art Nouveau or Art Deco? Art with the Greats: Earth, Sky & Space (Kimber) Since ancient times, artists have listened to the call of nature and taken inspiration from the magical wilderness of earth and space. In this fun and unique art class, students will travel across diverse, beautiful habitats and then up through the galaxies- with a paintbrush, a canvas, and a dream; As inspiration, students will be introduced to a variety of nature, landscape and planetary art, from inspirational, contemporary artists to famous artists throughout history. Given the opportunity to experiment with different and new materials, and with the emphasis on three-dimensional and textural art, students will then create their own natural beauties. Imagine glassy blue oceans and cascading waterfalls or glow-in-the-dark comets bursting through space. Adventuring with a variety of techniques, students will also discover the fundamentals of composition, layering and creating focal points. Children will then use paint, wood, modeling pastes, collage materials and found objects to create original pieces of Earth Art- gardens, landscapes and habitats, and Sky and Space Art- all the beauty above, planets and galaxies. While creating their own masterpieces, kids will be able to explore and discover art as a way to express their feelings, be creative, and develop their skills, as well as their confidence. We celebrate the artist in every person - on earth and in space! Beach Combers (Joe) There are many wonderful things about Southern California, but none more wonderful than the beach. For those of us lucky enough to get to spend time on the beach, a great way to make it even more special is to learn a little about it. The shore is a remarkable ecosystem, where land and water meet, terrestrial plants and animals - ourselves and others - overlap and interact with marine plants and animals, as well as the amazing life that inhabits the “intertidal zone”. Birds frequent our beaches as they migrate along their various routes. The currents and tides carry flotsam to our shore. The unique weather patterns along the beach - from morning fogs to afternoon breezes and occasional violent storms - all have to do with the shore and how water and land and air all interact. We’ll explore some of the many remarkable aspects of the beach as the opportunity presents itself in between just walking along the shore, exploring and having fun! Bio-Dynamics in the Garden (Kara) What's in there? Worms, dirt...mycorrhizae? It's a microcosm of wonderment waiting to be explored. How does soil form, what's in there and what makes things grow, die or do nothing...? Come explore the world of dirt! Some people eat it, others wear it, paint with it, build homes with it--soil is so versatile and exciting. We'll look at stratification and differences in soils in different climactic zones, regions... and altitudes. We will create dioramas, mini theatrical performances and a mask insert bug book. All students will assist in the garden at times. Older Students will go in depth into soil recording and measurement techniques and learning about instruments used to asses soil in areas as diverse as farming to seismic activity. Younger students will have lots of opportunities to engage in the tactile and other sensory qualities of soil by making mud pies, puddle stomping and looking for buried treasure. Biomes of Asia: Bamboo Forests to the Himalayas (Linda) Asia has a sampling of every major biome from the tallest mountains of the Himalayas, the rainforest crusted island chains of Southeast Asia, as well as hauntingly beautiful bamboo forests. The climate varies from frozen north of Siberia to hot and humid monsoon areas of the South creating a diverse population of plants and animals. In this class we will explore the physical and biological factors that create these truly unique corners of our planet. Blog About It (Joe & Mila) Fluent Writers 11+ Are you ready to develop your writing voice and get your passion out into the world? In this motivating writing class we will combine computer skills and many opportunities for fluent writers to strengthen their craft by creating personal blogs to showcase our published work. We will explore the writing process, higher level writing genres and the traits of strong writing. Students will also build communication skills through peer revision, editing and analysis of each other’s writing. Come blog with us! *Please note, returning blog students from Spring 2016 will have the opportunity to further develop their written content, to modify and personalize their blogs and also to take on a leadership role assisting new students in the process. Book Devourers (Liz) The only thing better than reading a good book is sharing that book. In this class students share some of their favorite books. This class gives students the opportunity to not only express how these books make them feel but learn about new books that have held a special place with fellow students. We will also work on create a notebook full of the books we love and new books to try. And during each class we will set aside some time to enjoy some silent reading. Botany: Anatomy & Physiology of a Plant (Linda) What is a plant? The answer may be complicated because it relates to 400,000 species of living organisms. We will study the structure, biochemistry, growth and reproduction of plants. We will also look at the traits they have in common and the adaptions some species have developed to survive in unusual environments. Brain Benders (Kimber) Students will jump right into a puzzler's paradise in this exciting and mind-stimulating class, presented through a collection of fun logic puzzles, games, riddles, mind-blowing optical illusions and compelling stories! Parents and teachers will know that, as scientists report, brain teaser games can improve memory, problem-solving skills, cognitive control and reaction times. Students will only know that they are having a blast! Students will also be challenged to think about questions like... how exactly do optical illusions play with perception? How is the brain working and what is the difference between left-brained thinking and right-brained thinking? Why did the chicken really cross the road? Crucial learning through play! Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! (Nathan) In Lab Dabblers Bugs we will investigate different types of bugs, their habitats, classifications, body parts, and life cycles. We will use magnifying glasses, scientific method, observation, and fieldwork to study and identify different bugs that live in and around us. From centipedes to cockroaches we will leave no stone unturned…literally. The California Weather Report (Nathan) Students will investigate, experiment with, and give a live, filmed weather report on the ever changing condition of our atmosphere. We will focus on climate zones, weather phenomena, and extreme weather conditions...all found in our home state. The weather reports will be delivered live in person at the open house in December and….wait for it...be live actual real time weather reports for different areas of California. Campaign & Elections (Joe) It’s election season and the general election is coming up! Do you know how this whole election process works? In this class we’ll follow the candidates as they vie for the presidency. We’ll get to know the candidates, and what they stand for. We’ll find out about the issues and try to figure out which candidate most closely match our views. We’ll practice taking polls and voting on the issues. While we’re at it, we’ll learn about the election process and about famous historical campaigns and elections! We’ll follow the election through November 8, and then switch our focus to general current events. Cheetah Club Running (Bonnie) Run. Run. Just keep running. Now, run some more. After all, we are The Realm Cheetahs. We will train for a Fun Run in one of the most beautiful settings in the world- Santa Monica, CA. Runners will build their strength and endurance, and see how they can empower each other in a primal way. Kids will change into their sneakers, and expect to keep their bodies moving forward, for a solid forty-five minutes to an hour. They will engage in various motivating and silly drills that trick the mind into putting one foot in front of the other. Go Team! Chess Club (Joe) Chess is a fascinating game with a long and prestigious history. It has been played by great mathematicians, scientists, artists and creative and intelligent people of all types (as well as by just ordinary people like you and me) for hundreds of years. Many people would say that there is not a more enjoyable, challenging or educational game than chess. Maybe the most surprising thing about chess though, is that kids love it! This class is fun for everybody from the beginner, learning how each piece moves, to the more seasoned player that’s learning about strategies, move sequences, endgames and feints. Coming of Age for Girls (Bonnie) Lady Power! This class provides a safe forum for our mighty gals to receive direct and accurate information about their bodies. The semester will start with us proving that we are more than just looks and eye rolling historical, and current, stereotypes of what we cannot do and should be doing. We will discuss how abstinence makes Adolescence so much less complicated and cover community resources that are out there to help girls navigate the awesome responsibilities that come from deciding to have sex. We’ll learn the parts of our reproductive system and share tips on how to survive the emotional and physical chaos that hormones throw our way. We will also touch on how social media may/may not influence our gender view. Cooking Up Math (Jessica) We will focus on recipes that are simple and sensible that the students can accomplish and relate to. The idea here is to encourage confidence in the kitchen using ingredients they are familiar with. Positive reinforcement comes when they eat something they cook AND it tastes good. Participation to encourage counting, following directions and estimating, as well as telling time, applying simple math skills and reading will also be stressed. Cooking skills that we will focus on are measuring (weight and volume), cutting, grinding, grating, peeling and separating eggs. Some kitchen tools we will use are the electric mixer, safety can opener, thermometer, measuring devices. Cosplay (Liz) Ever wanted to dress up as a superhero or a cartoon character? The world of cosplay or costume roleplaying gives people the opportunity to craft costumes that resemble some of their favorite characters. In this class we will create costumes based on these characters as well as create some new by mashing up two different genres. Who knows who we create? Maybe a steampunk Mario or a Jedi Cinderella. If we can imagine it we can do it! Drawing & Painting Fine Arts (Linda) Learn fundamental techniques to draw and paint works of art. Develop your own style! Increase your powers of observation and practice skills that will enable you to effectively express your imagination. Explore the amazing possibilities of what your mind can dream up and your hands can create. Dungeons & Dragons (Liz) Join us for a semester of art, fun, dragons, and knights where the only limit is your imagination! During our adventures we will forge alliances and friendships. We will also be making our very own 3-D dungeon tiles. Watch the adventures grow as we explore our very own fantasy universe. Earth Art (Linda) With a unique blend of science and art, learn about our planet and how it works through the creation of sculptural and collage models. We will deepen our understanding of the structure, movement, geology, oceanography, climate and inner workings of Earth as inspiration to draw, paint, glue and sculpt. Earthly Readers & Explorers (Jimmy) In Earthly Readers and Explorers we start our literacy journey off with a positive kick! Nature themes each week help make the jump to reading tangible and fun. Alphabet, recognition of upper case and lower case letters, and phonemic awareness abide as we explore through various learning activities. The Elements (Joe) This class explores the periodic table, atomic structure, and characteristics of individual chemical elements. There will be two primary aspects to each class meeting. We’ll begin each week by doing brief research and sharing projects. Following that, we’ll explore the elements through gameplay. Students can learn as we go, or access the game questions and answers - plus extra information - via www.joesclasses.wordpress.com for at-home practice and study. Environmental Engineers & Architects (Linda) Environmental Engineering is concerned with protection of the environment from human activities, how can we live more in tune with nature? In what ways do we impact our surroundings and what can we design to help us minimize our footprint? Using the design process (researching the problem, brainstorming, designing, building, testing and evaluating, back to the drawing board and build again) we will explore ways to live that are sustainable, functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Game Academy (Digital Dragon) Game Academy is much more than a class: it’s the tech equivalent of joining a sports team. Deep dive into game design for kids who are serious about creating workable technology. Modeled after the game development process in a professional setting, Game Academy allows students to experience the entire process from the beginning with preview pitches and concept art through prototyping and game testing to a final reveal. Kids will get a chance to try multiple roles: programmer, designer, and project manager. Geometry (Joe) Now that we’ve learned a little algebra, we can begin exploring some of the other amazing things Math can do. In Geometry we’ll learn about lines and shapes and angles and their properties and relationships. We’ll discover conjectures and learn about logic and proof. Students will learn about angle measurements, properties of parallel lines, triangles, circles and other polygons. Students will learn about similarity and congruency. Students will gain experience in graphing and working with the coordinate plane. We’ll practice thinking and figuring analytically and look for ways to tie words and numbers and shapes and symbols together to describe concepts that are otherwise difficult to imaginable, discovering along the way the power and glimpsing the potential of symbolic language. Students in this dynamic, hands-on cooking class will find that cooking can be quite creative, full of discovery, and a whole lot of fun - plus you get to eat what you make! We'll stamp our passports and explore wonderful cuisines from far off places. Through delicious cooking, this unique class will emphasize geography, foods grown in different regions, culture, language, history, and music from around the globe! Students will learn fundamental culinary skills and nutrition education while building cuisine self-esteem and exploring their creativity. Students will also develop important life skills such as working as a team, applying math and science, and expanding their global gastronomical experience. Fun and tasty projects, savory and sweet treats, will include Italian home-made pasta from scratch, Turkish baklava, Vietnamese spring rolls, Mexican tortillas and tamales, Spanish tapas, Indian samosas, French crepes, Japanese sushi, and North African couscous. Where else can you make edible works of art? Students will also design their very own multi-cultural cookbook! Fall 2016 Class Descriptions The REALM Creative Academy Please review the Fall 2016 Class Schedule for age ranges of classes. Gourmet Math (Bonnie) Math is cooking in the kitchen…and it tastes good. Students mix and beat their way through the semester, putting together useful recipes into their very own cookbooks. The goal is for common kitchen measurements, and conversions, to become second nature. They will split recipes in 1/2, double recipes, and be able to understand the fractional parts of a whole. Kitchen hygiene and organization will be modeled and encouraged. All recipes will be budget-friendly. Green REALM (Kara) What makes a place "Green?" What makes earth a green plant? This semester we will examine the science behind earth ecology and interwoven systems. We'll look at plant biology, diversity and regions of rich biodiversity through the lenses of Permaculture and Biodynamic Earth Studies. We'll look at Green Careers and take REALM sustainability to the next level. This class may include local field trips. Habitat Conservation (Kimber) Happy habitats make happy animals and happy people! We are all connected and our actions in the world affect humans, animals, and plants everywhere. By protecting habitats, we're protecting wildlife- and our own lives! Students in this fun and engaging, hands-on class will explore interesting information about the threats to different habitats around the world and to the animals that live there. Stories, exciting art and thought-provoking projects, like "Earthy Art Message Mandalas", will spark curiosity while students become aware of some of the major threats, like pollution, that are specifically impacting these natural environments and all creatures who live there. Students will dive into information about how human settlement, life style choices and deforestation has contributed to habitat destruction and threatens everything that lives there. Students will also develop a deeper understanding of the greenhouse effect and human influences on the Earth's climate. Students will then use their crazy creative problem-solving skills, become habitat defenders, and be in action, working together on solutions in a positive and powerful way. Projects also include "Mindful Mobiles", garbage science, planting experiment, dioramas, art posters and card sets. Look out world - Here they come! Hand Sewing (Kara) Start with an idea, thread and needle and let's go! Join a circle of fun as we learn the basics of threading needles, selecting string lengths and knotting and progress into types of stitches and creating patterns or selecting and reading them. For students eight and above, we will make sample books for stitches to remember patterns and reference at home. Seasoned sewers may work on shirring, gathering, pleating, drawn thread, doll making, advanced hemming or other techniques. Students are welcome to bring their own ideas and work at their own paces. No sewing circle is complete without fun sewing music and tea. The “Hardy Har Har” History of Humor (Mr. G) Why do we laugh? What makes something so darn funny? Which came first, the rubber chicken or the squirting egg? And who's on first? This hilarious and enlightening overview of the history of humor travels from its roots in Ancient Greece and early Vaudeville to present day through incredible comic readings, amusing recordings and stellar video performances of some of the most memorable and hysterical moments and performers in comedy history. Class will culminate in adapting/performing a short skit from one of the golden time periods of comedy. Hikers’ Club (Jimmy, Nathan, Trista) Southern California offers some of the most amazing hiking trails in the country and what better time to go explore them than during school hours! We will be splitting hikers’ club into three groups this semester: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday groups. Our goals will be the same for all classes: immerse ourselves in the California outdoor experience with mini-lessons on geology, history, botany, and zoology. We will study the land, dig in the dirt, observe the animals, and identify the plants as we explore our coastal landscape and build up our endurance one mountain top at a time! History DNA - Environmental Heroes (Joe) History DNA is a game that gives students an opportunity to learn about fascinating and influential figures from the past. It’s played with an ever-growing deck of cards. Each card depicts a significant person from history. The game involves quiz questions about the historical individuals, identifications of the people, and competitions between different people based on character traits. During the Fall 2016 session, we’ll be playing with figures from previous semesters and adding new cards depicting Environmental Heroes to the deck. Some of the people we’ll learn about will be: Rachel Carson St Francis of Assisi Aldo Leopold Henry David Thoreau John Muir Charles Darwin William Morris Alfred Wallace John James Audubon Theodore Roosevelt John Ruskin Ansel Adams How to be a Jedi in Life (Jimmy) Join us at Dagobah West for your very own Jedi training. Welcoming all padawans to the Jedi Order. Learn the Jedi Code of peacekeeping, discipline, mindfulness, and overall mind-body skill. Here we learn who we are and how to give back, in the coolest, funnest way possible. How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse (Kimber) There's nothing worse than being stuck in an impending apocalypse without some basic knowledge, skills and crucial essentials on hand... and an impending zombie attack is no laughing matter! Through a series of games, lively "undead" question-and-solution stories and dramatic play scenarios (and using "zombies" as a jumping off point for exploring real information)... students in this crazy fun survival class will be challenged to think about all aspects of a zombie pandemic. What about health needs, containment, food storage and cure? In order to be extra prepared and gain some serious zombie knowledge, students will learn all about the physiology of a zombie (and previous human state), as well as how to create an allhazards emergency kit (coincidentally suitable for earthquakes and other natural disasters) and perform basic first aid skills (as long as it's not a zombie bite). What wilderness and survival skills, tools and techniques will be needed for escaping an undead onslaught? Students will practice how to take care of basic living needs, create a safe shelter, and preserve and store food. And what about "catching" the virus? Students will also explore how a virus actually affects the body, how a virus spreads, the speed and distance travelled, prevention tips and how different living areas would be affected. Need to know the quickest direction to run? In addition, students will practice how to read a map to determine best exit routes and safe assembling areas, as well as locate the closest hospital, gas station, grocery stores, bank, and other buildings of importance. All this and more... and of course, this class wouldn't be complete without some special effects zombie makeup play at the end of the day. Intro to Outdoor Sports & Games (Jimmy) Realm Sports is a class which introduces Realm Academy students to the basic rules and game play of some of people's favorite sports and games in a fun, teamwork-inspired environment with an emphasis on sportsmanship. Sports teaches many life lessons in a healthy way: interpersonal relationships, trust, strategy, mindfulness, coordination, hand-eye, mind-body, motor skills. Soccer, softball, kickball, flag football, basketball, dodgeball, battle ball, steal the sticks are all great games to get acquainted with and for some students possibly take from the Realm and explore further. Intuitive Herbalism (Kara) Tune in and turn on as we connect with the earth from the heart. We will dive into the realm of plant and flower communication to make herbal remedies and flower essences, as well as creating oracle decks to call on Plant (aka fairy or elemental) Energies for healing purposes. We'll learn about wildcrafting and the importance of keeping land pesticide and injection free when making medicinal preparations. Finally we'll construct a box or kit to house our precious, handmade treasures, games, cards, charts and pendulums. Journeys (Nathan & Trista) Our Journeys group will choose a theme within the theme of our semester: Earth, Infinite Space, and Living Creatures. We will examine our curiosities, choose a path of discovery, and investigate as our mission to solve some of the natural mysteries that challenge humanity. From cleaning up our planet to the horizons of space travel Journeys students will immerse themselves into the unknown and become experts in a field they are drawn to. They will be exploring via field trips and tours, organizing their information through a variety of channels including media, interviews, and hands on experience, and then applying their new found knowledge to visual and written projects they choose throughout the semester. Keyboard & Sing Along Mini Mi Chorus (Do Re Mi Music) Is your child interested in music, or already taking lessons on an instrument? In this class, kids will experience different areas of the musical spectrum through learning basic keyboard skills, music theory, and a bunch of fun, memorable tunes to sing, building a strong, musical foundation that will last a lifetime! We will tickle the ivories, learn the basics of reading music through note values and rhythm patterns, and sing some rockin' songs as we journey into the fun, fantastic world of music! Know What (Joe) Know What is a general knowledge quiz game. It’s kind of like the “In the Know” game that we’ve played for the past few years, but in “Know What” we go around the table and take turns answering questions instead of relying on speed. The game focuses on questions from six topics: Art & Architecture, Science & Math, Literature, History, Geography & Government, and Mythology, Folklore and the Bible. Now let's say that planet was Mars. How will we colonize the "Red Planet"? How will we survive? How will we grow food, get water or even find shelter? What will our houses look like? Make Your Own Sci-Fi Comic Books (Linda) Using the unique style of Comic Book Art, we will learn how to use pictures to tell a story, delve into character development, create exciting dialog, and probe the imaginative genre of Science Fiction. Students will develop their own comic books with three-dimensional characters, complete with original stories. They will learn to draw in the comic book style and design dynamic compositions that add drama to the story. Marine Biology: Kelp Forest (Linda) What is lurking just below the surface of the waves just off our coast? It is a magical forest of waving kelp, spiny urchins, playful sea lions and even, the infamous great white shark. Discover a whole new world hiding in plain sight as we study the denizens of the California kelp forest and create our own underwater world right in the classroom. Master Magicians (Scott) Get ready to add a few more tricks to your repertoire! Magicians will build off of their knowledge base to create astounding effects and illusions! We will be using cards, dice, dominoes, board games, and even some of our very own original games to make math meaningful and exciting. Meet the Neighbors: Mexico & Central America (Kimber) Through exciting projects that stimulate all the senses, students in this cool class will travel through Mexico and Central America and explore a kaleidoscope of rich cultures; This class will feature unique hands-on learning experiences about our fascinating neighbors South of our border- the people and their music, art, cuisine, geography, habitats, and animals. Students will discover how Pre-Colombian civilizations made their mark with the vast pyramids of Teotihuacán, stunning temples of Chichén Itzá, Tikal in Guatemala, and countless other archaeological wonders. From Aztec and Mayan civilization to the Spanish influence on Mexico and Central America, students will learn about history of these fascinating countries- as well as how people live today. Taking inspiration from famous artists, interesting environments and the colorful culture from these Mexican and Central American countries, this exciting class will also feature vibrant folk arts and crafts projects- using traditional methods which are well-founded in the past, and in a variety of media including painting, tin punching, printmaking and clay. The Melody in My Paintbrush: Nature Sounds (Kimber) From the sounds of the rainforest and birds chirping, to whale songs and wolves howling, students in this wildly creative art class will listen to a wide range of nature's music and animal songs, and let the music move them to create a different forms of artistic self expression. Given a variety of fun art tools and mediums, the freedom to express themselves- and using these different kinds of nature noises to inspire and move them, students have a unique opportunity to create magical pieces of art. Students will discover that sounds, even those created by amazing animals, have emotional power- and will gain an understanding of how much of a role that emotion can play in artmaking as they create their own masterpieces. Sounds can also influence the texture and thickness of a line, the dab or drip, the slash or dash of a paint stroke, or the light or dark in a color. Mindfulness & Meditation (Jimmy) Welcome to the friendly unknown. Last semester we explored some tools and techniques for meditation, mindfulness and reflective art making. This semester, we welcome returning students and new adventurers to join us as we go deeper into dialoguing with our bodies, minds and souls in the realms of nature and the cosmos, through guided meditations, exercises, and reflective art and other creative based activities. We'll learn more meditation techniques and hone old favorites, create new art based on the electricity of the body, incorporate yoga, breathing and listening techniques and have some fun with energy play on nature based field trips. Yes, we'll even have organic herbal (not caffeinated) tea and loads of bliss. Join us. Mindfulness & Meditation teaches students essential skills for life and learning. At the very core of being and cognition we can develop skills and awareness to benefit us in every single aspect of life. Awareness of self, others, situation can enrich experience to a deeper and fuller level. Breathing skills, body scans, guided meditations, and awareness and memory games will bring fun into the present moment equation. Games such as 'push hands', discussion on Zen shorts, building of peace altars, and exploration of intuition abound. Multiplication Madness (Margarita) If you put one bacteria in a jar at 11:00 and it multiplies every minute at what time will the jar be completely full? It's madness! They are multiplying by the minute and it is sheer madness! There is just something about multiplication that makes kids go mad. "I have to remember all these random numbers multiplying at me!" I know it is scary, but there is a solution! Kids will learn how easy multiplication really is not simply by memorizing them, but by doing "thinking" multiplication. Thinking about if the answer makes sense with those around it. Kids will make factor trees, and please don't tell them, but they will actually learn to divide as well! It will be shear madness and Multiplication Madness this fall. Musical Theater (Jessica) This class is for the student who wants to improve their musical theater performance skills. We will practice acting, dancing, vocal performance, music theory, stage presence, costume design, set creation, and even some play writing! We will perform for family and friends at the end of the class. This is for those of you who love performing AND also for those who feel a little more withdrawn, who with encouragement, will be able to find your own voice! My Song (Jimmy) In My Song, Realm kids will be immersed in the wonderful world of organized vibration. Course will be split into listening to music and making music all while focusing on the song. We identify the music: the beat, melody and chords, the instruments; and the message: the lyrics. We also focus on the forms of songs including the classic: verse-chorus-bridge. Different time periods and styles will be touched in with an accent on modern American guitar and pop music. We look at the artistic side of singer-songwriters and bands with flyers and album art, and also explore the live performance. Class to culminate with a trip to the recording studio! Mythology Around You (ages 7-10, Liz) In this class student will study many of the great myth traditions from around the world. As we hop from Greece to Mesoamerica to Asia students will gather a knowledge of the myths so they can see how myths are being used in our world today. At each stop students will use engaging projects to help bring the myths to life. This is one hero’s journey that everyone will be excited to take. Mythology Around You (ages 11+, Liz) The great myths of the past were shaped by the cultures that created them. These tales of heroes, monsters and epic quests continue to shape the culture that we consume. In this class we will examine the myths from around the world. As we delve deep into them students will create a database of knowledge they can access to see how myths, previously unseen, are all around us and influence the culture we live in. We will look at current movies, books, and television shows to see how myths are used to add more dimension. Nature Art (Linda) Mother Nature will be a muse and media in this arts and crafts class. We will create pieces that reflect earth’s beauty as well as function to help us preserve that beauty. Number Play (Jimmy) This class introduces children to the wonderful world of numbers! Friendly familiarization with numbers 1 through 12 takes place through stories, hands-on games, puzzles, and fun math exercises. We also practice writing numbers, counting out loud, and use of shapes and objects comes into play. Out of This Galaxy Space Art (Kimber) This highly experimental class is all about the fun exploration of the billions of galaxies beyond our solar system - and creating stunningly beautiful space art through a variety of art mediums and surface creations. Images of galaxies can be truly breathtaking and mysterious, and will easily inspire students when making their own versions. Imagine glowing abstract nebula space clouds, sparkling star clusters and fluorescent spiral galaxies! Students in this special art class will experiment with different painting techniques, including air brush work, masking, sponging and splatter painting. Students will also explore different surface techniques that allow for a build-up of layers. We will work on wood, paper and largersized canvas using glow-in-the-dark and black light paints, alcohol paints, oil paints, watercolors and acrylics as the main mediums. To simulate the galaxies' kaleidoscope of colors and textures, layers and "building" mediums used will include oil primers, wax, tar-like and textured gel mediums, collage, alkyds, and enamels. Once the surface is created, students will then carve and score into it and create finished glittery planetary masterpieces! And of course, this exciting class wouldn't be complete without a cumulating black light art show. Be prepared to be dazzled! Painting with Pixels (Digital Dragon) Combine 21st century tools with classical design skills to create logos, avatars, 3D models, and more! Paper Makers’ Math (Jessica) Have you ever wondered if there's more to all those paper airplanes and origami cranes? In this class, students will be exploring geometry in a new, aerodynamic, environmentally friendly way! They will explore two and three dimensional shapes, faces, vertices, edges, lines, angles, and curves, all while manipulating paper and creating a masterpiece. Park Adventures (Nathan / Trista) Let’s get out and play! Games and contests, running and playing, teamwork, cooperation, leadership, winning, losing, competing and enjoying each and every moment of all of these vital life skills is the core of this class. We will be leaving the center and heading to one of the local parks for each of these classes. A Percentage of Me Likes This Class (Jessica) What percent of the day do we spend at the realm? What percent of our teacher's names start with the letter "J?" What percent of the Earth is covered in ice? What percent of peanuts grown actually turn into peanut butter? Quest takes place 2x per week: Monday, 11am-3:30pm and Wednesday, 12:30-1:30pm. Quest is a multifaceted community based experiential learning program. Each Quest begins within ourselves. Students will look at themselves and consider the person they are at this beginning point in their lives, as they embark along a path that includes a journey of discovery, a realization, and then a creation that will reflect a new understanding of themselves, their community, and the world around them. Students will develop relationships within the Quest community. As individuals and as part of a supportive and cooperative group students will explore and experience a variety of adventures and challenges. By the end of the session, students will complete their journey and arrive back where they began, but with new growth and understanding - ready to explore the new selves they have become - ready to embark on new Quests and new discoveries. During the Winter session, students will be exploring the theme: “Sea Beauty”. What better way to work on spelling than to make a super fun, ultra challenging game out of it! Each student will have their own role in our game that best fits their interests and inspires them to practice brave spelling, learn rules of phonics, and to sharpen and develop reading skills. REALM Farmer’s Market (Nathan) Each student will plot their land and build their farm. Each week we will study new types of produce to grow for our end of the year Farmer’s Market. We will transform the side of the Realm into a sustainable garden, learn about fertilizing and organic gardening, and set up our own booth to sell the goods we produce. REALM Magazine (Trista) This class will excite their minds and creativity while allowing them to think on a deeper level of what they are truly passionate about. We will wander through their ideas individually, and as a group to explore and feed their curiosity! We'll discuss the purpose of a magazine, and content they’d like to contribute, as well as incorporating photo- journalism. There will be adventures out into the community to allow their ideas to flourish as they find something they’d like to inspect on a deeper level to share with the Realm. We are going to make a MAGAZINE! How exciting is that! It’s all about exploring ideas, having fun, and creating something they will be proud of forever! Revision Museum (Mila) Writing & Reading Workshop for Early Transitional - suggested ages 7-9 To revise means to look with new eyes, and this part of the writing process brings endless opportunity for growth and learning. Our growing writers will become archeologists and museum curators this semester! We will dig deep to discover the gems in our stories, focusing on narrative writing and the craft of revision. Then we will curate our own Revision Museum to showcase the artifacts of our efforts and teach others how they can grow as writers. Writers will also get a good dose of reading comprehension skills through powerful children’s literature as we learn to read like writers, paying close attention to what mentor authors do to make their stories strong. Riddles, Riddles, Riddles (Margarita) Do your kids say clever things all the time? Are they natural jokesters? They will have a blast trying to solve Riddles, Riddles, Riddles! What did the paper say to the pencil? What's better than a talking dinosaur? Why was the math book sad? Why did the teacher write on the window? Are you still thinking about it? Your kids will be too! There are structures and strategies you can use to solve any riddle. Kids will be introduced to a mini Socratic method to help become riddle code breakers! Kids will also have fun coming up with their own clever answers. They will play games and be challenged to find the ending of their own secret riddles every week. Riddles teach kids to think outside of the box and think about the double meaning of words. What did the paper say to the pencil? Right on! Kids will have to come join this class to find the secret answer to the rest of the riddles. Better than a talking dinosaur? Is that even possible? Riddles, Riddles, Riddles come join the fun. Road Trippin': The Mathematical Story (Jessica) Travel across the United States and maybe even into a different country with us as we learn all about how much the world ACTUALLY costs. Each student will begin with a budget, research their destinations, and plan their own excursions. They even get to choose a car to travel in, manage their "miles per gallon," and track their travel expenses. Some may even learn about state taxes and currency conversions! Rock, Scissors, Paper: Earth Science (Nathan) This class will look at the natural world from geology to metals to different types of wood and explore how humans use these valuable resources to advance their existence. We will cover different types of rocks and minerals, where they are found, how they are formed, and their uses in society. Where does metal come from? How do humans find/use it? And, what happens to it when we are finished using it? Lastly, wood. Different types of trees are made form different types of wood which humans have found a variety of uses for around the world. From balsa wood to solid oak we will investigate different types of trees, their wood, its uses and value, and if we are sustaining this resource on planet Earth. Science Fiction Short Stories (Liz) Alien landscapes, dystopian futures, robots, and other dimensions are just a few of the subjects we will be studying as we explore science fiction from its beginnings to the present. We will delve deep into the layers of the stories to see how society and ourselves are reflected back. Students will come away with the knowledge of how each story was shaped by eh time it was created in and how they helped to shape future stories. Our studies will take us all the way back to the 2nd century where will learn about the first science fiction story to the present when we will create our own. Students will also get a chance to learn if some of this science fiction has become a science reality and if so what does that mean for our future? Scratch (Digital Dragon) Come learn to code! Using M.I.T’s Scratch 2, kids will learn how to talk to computers and make their very own animations, music videos and miniature games! Scratch 2, a drag-and-drop block based program, is perfect for beginning programmers as it teaches concepts and computer functions in an easily navigated environment! Service to the Earth & Living Creatures (Jimmy) In Service to Earth and Living Creatures we will learn that ever-freeing principle: service to our fellows and our environment. In our modern world we have no shortage of consuming and taking, but here we learn to give back. Planting of trees, strategizing and enacting sustainability plans, green roofs, recycling, animal rescue, and volunteering guide us on our semester. A healthy respect for all things, including ourselves, is the goal. State It, Debate It & Unite (Liz & Nathan) This is a student inspired debate class with two teachers. Each teacher will have a group of students who will be assigned each side of a challenging opinion oriented issue. Students will investigate their side of the argument, present their findings, and then work together to find common ground and compromise. The three stages of this class are: Investigation, Presentation, and Resolution. Story Safari (Bonnie) From Alligator to Zebra, we will make our way through the alphabet, scoping out books with animals as the main character. Adventurers will see how a story is built and play jungle-themed games to practice building words and identifying parts of speech. Bonus: scientific fun fact building about real animals. Storybook Adventure (Mandi) Stories in Space, Earth and the Natural World will suck us into regions we've possibly never been to or dreamed of yet! As always, we will create fantastic creative projects based on our reading adventures and come back to planet REALM with daring tales to share with others. Student Government: Elected Officials (Jimmy & Nathan) Elected REALM cabinet members will meet each week to put their minds together and execute their democratic duty to help make The Realm a better place. Introduction to Robert's Rules and the functioning of government committees, from finance to fun, will be carried out. Discussion, compromise, delegation, diplomacy, voting, minority opinion, and real-time action will go on Thursday mornings. One of the best ways to learn about ourselves is to be on a team working together to make the best choices for the whole. Realm student government is a discovery of empowerment that we can make positive choices for the future. For Fall semester we will facilitate elections in October and help guide students through the process of running for office: making campaign posters, platforms, debating, and diplomacy. For Fall semester we will facilitate elections in October and help guide students through the process of running for office: making campaign posters, platforms, debating, and diplomacy. Teacher's Bootcamp (Liz / Nathan) Got an idea you want to share--let's dive in! Kids rule in teacher's boot camp! In this class, kids become the teachers and peers become their students. In this "life lab" style class, we'll discover, understand and apply different learning and teaching styles, skills and ways to prepare a class. Students will explore what they are passionate and curious about and learn the skills of research, organization and presentation as they come up with varied and even wacky ways to connect and engage with their learning audiences and check for learning. Throughout the semester students will be presenting their passions, giving classes and helping one another to shine and grow. Get ready to change the world!!!! Things with Wings (Kimber) Birds, Bees And Bats! In this exciting class, students will explore the magical world of creatures with wings. What would it be like to soar through the sky like an eagle or swoop down into the rivers like a dragonfly? Why can't all birds fly? How can bats see? From backyards to forests, grasslands to seashores, come on an adventure and explore the fascinating world of birds, insects and other winged wonders. Interesting stories, fun activities, creative crafts and cool art projects will spark the imagination and feed the curious mind. Hands-on projects include gorgeous bird feeders and homes for our feathered friends, bird beak masks, flying experiments, Painted Lady Butterfly hatching, "Lord of the Wings" competition, insect mobiles, 3-D sculptures and multi-media paintings. Think Tank (Joe) Self-Guided Learning & Information Processing for Homeschoolers The REALM Think Tank is an experience in self-guided learning - it is an environment that guides each student in discovering his or her ability to learn. The Think Tank guides students along the learning and creative process from the posing of an initial question, through research and discovery, to the creation of a completed product demonstrating and sharing their accomplishments and new understanding. This process gives students the experience of learning a self-chosen topic or skill, and an awareness of their ability to take control of their own education. We will raise questions like…what is learning? How do I learn? What do I want to learn? Are different ways of learning better for different subjects? What can I accomplish with the new knowledge I’ve found? More advanced students will begin exploring the distinction between learning information and learning concepts. We will begin actively building a foundation of knowledge and comprehension to help expand our overall understanding of ourselves and our potentials. Students will begin focusing on synthesis and connection - asking questions like, how do the things we know connect and inform other things we know and new things we learn/discover? Fall 2016 Class Descriptions The REALM Creative Academy Please review the Fall 2016 Class Schedule for age ranges of classes. Ukulele Class (Do Re Mi Music) Why the Ukulele? Well, as small as it is, it is a real instrument that kids don't have any trouble holding, handling and playing. Because of its size, finding frets, strings and playing basic chords becomes manageable and very enjoyable for 5 year olds. Besides strumming patterns and basic musical theory, we will be learning favorite children's songs that are fun and easy to grasp. Musical concepts and songs are highlighted through a fun, musical journey we follow together as a class from week to week - our "Ukulele Adventure in Hawaii". U.S. States and Capitals (Margarita) What's it like living in Delaware? How many states border California? If we are the Golden State which one is the Silver State? Is there a Copper State? Does the Pelican State really have pelicans? Why would you nickname your state the Sooner State? In Stack the Sates each student will become a state expert each week and learn about other states from their classmates. The kids will stack the states on the wall and be challenged to identify them by shape when they are not on a map! Kids will be able to identify all 50 states names, abbreviations, capitals and location. There will be challenges and games about other fun facts like state nicknames, famous sites, and the weirdest things you didn't know about this state! Come Stack the States and see if you can find North Dakota when it is stacked on top of California! Wacky Theater (Mr. G) Join crazy Mr. G for fun, hijinks and supercool theatre excitement. Explore your wild imagination and your silly side in an energetic, nutty and positive environment where there is no such thing as making a mistake because there are no judgments. We say "yes, yes, yes" to your child's creativity and discovery. There is a small, live performance the end of this session. What If? (Mr. G) This class is all about asking the magic question: “What If?”. What if the South had won the Civil War? What if TV had never been invented? What if there was only one kind of music? Thought-provoking, challenging and intriguing, this class explores the impact and repercussions in society of moments, ideas and events in history as they happened and as they could have happened. This class culminates in a group storybook of a “What If” moment in American history. Wonder of Words: Imagination Station (Mila) *Reading & Writing Workshop for Early/Emergent – suggested ages 5-7 What is imagination and how does it work? How does it help us as readers and writers? How can our imaginations help us explore the world? With a study of fiction reading genres, the elements of storytelling and a focus on the important comprehension strategy of visualization, we will stretch our imaginations as readers and writers. This two-day per week 90 minute literacy workshop will meet the needs of diverse learning styles and a range of developmental levels, giving students the opportunity to grow their reading and writing muscles in the way best suited for them. Explorations of both fiction and nonfiction text, concepts of print, letter sounds, word study, the reading/writing connection and the basics of reading and writing will delight our curious minds. Stories, songs, games, creative projects, and playful literacy centers will keep our little learners engaged as they explore the world of literacy and the theme of imagination. How many do you know? How many do you need to know? How do you spell them? Why do you spell them like that? And does it matter how you spell them? In Words, we’ll ask questions like these, as we get to know about words. We’ll learn about words as things, we’ll learn about language, and we’ll learn about vocabulary and spelling and word origins and the development of language. Each week we’ll learn about a new word, and a new spelling rule or convention. We’ll practice it through exercises and gameplay. This class will center around a spelling game that involves letters and letter groups and fun - it involves using letters and common groups of letters to make words, phrases and sentences of growing length and complexity. World Geography (Margarita) Explore the world we live in with geography for kids! A fun range of facts, games, puzzles, and spin the globe challenges. Learn about oceans, volcanoes, dust storms, glaciers, earthquakes, and other unique phenomena around the world. Kids will be able to identify countries and capitals all around the world and have strong visual images of the geographic makeup of different countries. Where are the most explosive volcanoes, the biggest tidal waves, the scariest sand storms, the wildest hurricanes. Travel with your imagination to the farthest corners of the earth and discover what they do in the desert with all that sand, where to go skiing if you live in Japan, and why Mongolia is the best place for a mountain climber. Learn about our planet in World Geography for Kids! World Watch Reporters (Bonnie) Early and Transitional Writers will practice the skills of persuasive opinion writing. They will brainstorm kid-friendly issues and learn how to weigh-in, in writing. Students will craft counter arguments and be introduced to the power of using strong verbs. They will share in the draft-revise-peer review-read aloud process, creating both independent and social opportunities. The World's a Stage (Mr. G) What makes a great story? What makes an exciting character? What makes an awesome conflict? Learn the fascinating craft of playwriting and how to pen your work fluidly, dynamically and fearlessly. With an emphasis on experimentation and process, this fun and challenging class will include attending a local play performance and will culminate in a live performance with local actors of each student's final short play.
