Sollecito, DMD, FDS, RCSEd THE CONFERENCE CENTER AT SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY Presentation: Friday, September 30, 2016 9 a.m.-4:30 P.M. This lecture will review common oral mucosal diseases encountered in practice. The seminar will be presented in a case-based learning format and will focus on the latest in the diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal disorders. Since the oral condition often reflects systemic disease, Dr. Sollecito will discuss systemic concerns in relation to oral findings. Audience participation is encouraged. Following this lecture, attendees should be able to: • Evaluate the oral cavity and diagnose common oral mucosal diseases. • Understand the relationship between systemic disease and its oral manifestations. • Better manage those oral conditions with the latest therapeutics. • Counsel patients regarding their oral condition. Thomas P. Sollecito, DMD, FDS, RCSEd Dr. Sollecito is the professor and chair of oral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine and professor of oral medicine in otolaryngology: head and neck surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He also is an attending in oral medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a university associate at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Sollecito completed his DMD degree program at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine where he graduated with honors. He is a Fellow in Hospital Dentistry and a Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry and a Diplomate in Oral Medicine. Formerly, he was the director of the Oral Medicine Residency Program and served as the Interim Dean at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. He served as President of the Eta Chapter of OKU and President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He is a section editor of the Compendium Journal; a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dental Association and currently serves on the ADA Council of Scientific Affairs. He has authored numerous papers and chapters related to various topics in oral medicine. Dr. Sollecito has received a research grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) but has no other relevant financial relationships to disclose. Orthodontics—What the General Dentist Needs to Know Harold Slutsky, DMD THE CONFERENCE CENTER AT SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY Friday, October 14, 2016 9 a.m.-4:30 P.M. In this course, general dentists will receive detailed instruction on how orthodontists can move teeth in preparation for ideal restorative work. The morning part of the presentation will deal with multidisciplinary treatment. Specific topics to be covered include: 1. Ideal placement of teeth in preparation for dental implants (e.g. in agenesis cases). 2. Positioning of peg laterals for veneers/ crowns. 3. Bone resorption issues for the orthodontist and restorative dentist in preparation for dental implants. 4. Diagnosis and treatment of complex multidisciplinary cases. 5. Periodontal considerations, both functional and esthetic. 6. Invisalign in the general dentist’s office. In the afternoon, early treatment will be discussed, including: 1. Simple appliances general dentists can do in their offices. 2. Ankylosis 3. Early treatment appliances such as expanders, headgears, lip bumpers, and facemasks. There will be many take home pearls to use the next day in your office and participants are encouraged to bring records of challenging cases they have questions about. Following this lecture, attendees should HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF: • The management of agenesis cases, specifically when to close or open spaces. • Ideal orthodontic positioning of teeth in preparation for dental implants. • How to achieve beautiful restorative work, such as veneers, bonding and whitening, after orthodontic treatment. • Invisalign tips and what cases should be easily managed by a general dentist. • What to look for on pediatric patients, such as cross-bites, impactions, thumb/tongue habits, ankylosis and Class II and Class III malocclusions. • The simple appliances and early treatment that easily can be done by a general dentist. Harold Slutsky, DMD Harold Slutsky, DMD, is a clinical associate professor (adjunct) of Orthodontics at the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University. In addition, he is a visiting scholar at New York University. He is course director of the Junior Dental Student Orthodontic Lecture Series, the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Lecture Series, and the Second Year Orthodontic Resident Lecture Series. He received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1985, and a Certificate of Specialty in Orthodontics from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1987. He is a published author in several peer reviewed journals. In addition, Dr. Slutsky is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and maintains a private practice in both Northeast Philadelphia and Bensalem, PA. Dr. Slutsky has no relevant financial relationships to disclose. Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting for Dental Professionals Team of PDA Speakers THE CONFERENCE CENTER AT SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY Friday, November 11, 2016 9 A.M. - 11 A.M. (2 CE Credits) PDA's program, Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting for Dental Professionals, is approved by the Department of Human Services and the PA State Board of Dentistry and will fulfill Act 31 mandatory CE requirements for licensed dental professionals (dentists, hygienists and EFDAs). PDA’s program is custom designed for dental professionals and offers two CE credits that can be applied toward the hours you need to renew your dental license. Following this lecture, attendees should be able to: • Understand categories of child abuse as defined by the Child Protective Services Law. • Recognize universal child abuse indicators. • Recognize clinical and intraoral pathologies of physical and sexual abuse. • Understand the legal responsibilities as mandated reporters. • Know when, how and where to report suspected abuse and what happens after a report is made. • Understand the protections for reporters and penalties for failure to report. Radiation Protection Update—From Analog to Digital Radiography Susan M. Chialastri, RDH, DMD, MS THE CONFERENCE CENTER AT SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY Friday, November 11, 2016 11:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. (4 CE Credits) Radiation in dentistry is an invaluable tool which can be very beneficial to providing the correct diagnosis and treatment for our patients. However, radiation can pose serious risks to both the patient and the health care worker if not used properly. This course will cover all of the requirements mandated by the Department of State and the Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Radiation Protection regarding the critical importance of the need for continuing education in radiation safety and biological effects of radiation. The principles of digital radiography and the advantages and limitations will be discussed. Panoramic tomography and concepts of panoramic anatomy and interpretation also will be included. Quality assurance and quality control measures that should be implemented in every office will be presented including ADA/ FDA Guidelines for ordering dental radiographs in following the ALARA principle for radiation safety. This course will serve as a basic overview of radiographic principles and following the course, the participant will: • Know the principles of X-ray generation, image formation and intraoral anatomy. • Learn to assess quality assurance. • Understand intraoral techniques- the causes of and how to correct technique errors. • Identify exposure and processing errors and how to correct them. • Be able to provide radiation protection and safety for operator and patient. • Understand Panoramic radiography- technique and anatomy. • Realize the benefits and limitations of digital radiography. Note: This course fulfills Department of Environmental Protection regulations requiring CE for anyone who operates an X-ray machine. Susan M. Chialastri, RDH, DMD, MS Dr. Chialastri is a periodontist who was in private practice for 18 years. Her distinguished career started at Temple University, with a certificate in Dental Hygiene and a BS in Education. After teaching in the Dental Radiology Department at Temple University from 1974-83, she went on to receive her DMD degree from Temple, graduating summa cum laude. She completed post graduate training and received her certificate of Periodontics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. In January 2007, Dr. Chialastri returned to full-time teaching as an associate professor at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry in the Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology. Currently, she serves as director of the Predoctoral Periodontology Program. She has always been in the forefront of education, sharing her expertise in all aspects of the field. She has lectured on various periodontal topics and since 2010, Dr. Chialastri has lectured across the state to numerous dental and dental hygiene groups on radiology, a course which is in compliance with the DEP and Bureau of Radiation Protection.
