Battle Creek
When it comes to good family fun, Battle Creek
brings more to the breakfast table!
Known as the “Cereal Capital of the World,” Battle
Creek celebrates its heritage in a variety of entertaining
and enjoyable ways. The Cereal Festival is celebrated
in June and features the World’s Longest Breakfast
Table, which is followed by an entire day of activities
and events that draw thousands of participants each year.
Are you interested in history? Enjoy a sculpture,
monument or museum to find out more about Battle
Creek’s role on the Underground Railroad, as the
birthplace of the Seventh Day Adventist religion, or
other interesting facts that make Battle Creek a unique
place to visit.
Are you looking for family fun? Events take flight
early in July with the Field of Flight Air Show and
Balloon Festival, featuring hot air balloon launches
and plane demonstrations. Later in July head to Leila
Arboretum for the Leilapalooza Music Festival - over 30 bands take the stage throughout the day from a variety of genres.
Want to play outside? Bailey Park, a facility
that hosts some of the finest baseball and softball
tournaments, is the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely
picnic or to release some energy on the playground
equipment. Bike, run, walk or blade along the Linear
Park pathways that wind throughout the Battle Creek
area and enjoy the great outdoors.
Plan on taking some breathtaking pictures at Historic
Bridge Park, an open air museum filled with historic
truss bridges brought here from all over Michigan,
paired with a canoe launch, picnic area, walking trails
and restroom facilities.
Feed the giraffes at Binder Park Zoo - named one
of “America’s Best Zoos”, test your Lady Luck at
FireKeepers Casino, or keep cool at Full Blast, an
indoor/outdoor water park complete with two 200-foot outdoor water slides and two 100-foot indoor
water slides.
In Battle Creek fun is served up by the bowlful!

Two surveyors were working near present day Battle Creek when two Native Americans
allegedly attempted to steal some camp provisions and a fight broke out. Due to this incident, the nearby stream
was named the Battle Creek River, and the settlement later voted to name the town Battle Creek as well.
Our
Marshall
Welcome to Marshall, a National Historic
Landmark District where time stands still along treelined streets that showcase fully-restored Victorian
homes and beautiful garden landscapes.
Visitors first notice the grand, white pillared
Brooks Memorial Fountain at the center of town
- built in 1930 and designed as a replica of Marie
Antoinette’s “Temple of Love” garden fountain in
Versailles. The fountain features a fascinating light
and water show during the summer months.
Take a carriage ride to explore the rich history of
this idyllic setting, or pick up a brochure for a selfguided walking tour. More adventurous souls can
sign up for a Marshall Ghost Tour - a guided tour
filled with intriguing tales of haunted mansions. Learn
even more history of the area by participating in the
very popular Marshall Historic Home Tour, which
has opened local homes and museums to visitors every
September for over 50 years. If you dress in period
clothing, you can participate in the Civil War Ball that
same weekend, or you can watch the dancing from the
sidelines in your street clothes.
Communities
Downtown Marshall offers a
variety of shops filled with one-of-a-kind
treasures and fascinating items to discover. You will
want to stop by the Serendipity Gift Shop and the
EastEnd Studio & Gallery for some truly unique gifts
and keepsakes. The bustling downtown area serves as a
testament to the passion of a community that keeps this
historic gem thriving.
Enjoy a taste of Marshall at one of its family-owned
restaurants, including Schuler’s Restaurant & Pub
which has been serving guests from around the country
for over 100 years, and Cornwell’s Turkeyville USA
which boasts a professional dinner theatre and serves
everything turkey! For the micro-brew fan, Dark Horse
Brewing Company takes the mug with its awardwinning brews and tasty wood-fired pizzas.
Marshall also features a variety of museums, like the
U.S. Postal Museum that houses just about as much
postal memorabilia as the Smithsonian, and the worldrenowned American Museum of Magic. Marshall is a
community of small-town charm where you are always welcome!

Feed The Giraffes!
Binder Park Zoo hosts more than 140 species of animals
on 433 acres of wetlands and natural forests. Walking
along the tree lined paths and viewing the authentic
settings, you might forget you are visiting a zoo!
In 2014, three orphaned Alaskan bear cubs started
exploring their new home at Binder Park Zoo. The two
brothers and their sister are fun to watch as they wrestle
each other and play “King of the Tree Stand”.
As visitors step into Wild Africa, the landscape imitates
a true African savanna. View the zebras, watch as the
monkeys ‘show off’, and then feed a giraffe! The 16- to
20-foot tall animals wander up to the fence to feed right
out of your hand! Don’t worry, they’re harmless. But their
long, black tongues are a little ticklish!
©Andrea Morrison
Not only does Binder Park Zoo have unique animal
exhibits, but it also hosts several events each year geared
toward both adults and families - like the 5k Cheetah
Chase and the Zoo Boo. More information about Binder
Park Zoo can be found online at www.binderparkzoo.org.

Our History: The Cereal City
In 1866 the Seventh Day Adventists
opened a health institute to promote
preventative medicine as a way to help
patients with digestive issues, a common
ailment during that time when diets were
rich in meat and poor in fiber.
In 1876 the facility hired a new medical
director, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. Dr.
Kellogg named the property the Battle
Creek Sanitarium (The San, for short).
Research was conducted to discover
alternative foods that would appeal to the
patients tastebuds, but also follow the
strict dietary guidelines. One day while Dr.
Kellogg and his brother, William K. Kellogg,
were trying to develop a breakfast food
alternative they were called away and the
wheat mixture they had been working on
became dry and stale before they could
return. Being on a tight budget, they decided
to continue with their experiment. They
flattened the mixture, hoping for long sheets
of dough to come out of the rolling machine
- instead, to their surprise, they made flakes!
The brothers decided to toast the flakes and
serve it to the patients. It was an instant hit.
Several years later W.K. Kellogg
stopped working for the San, bought
the rights to Kellogg’s Cornflakes,
and started a business producing and
marketing his product.
Homemakers flocked to the tasty, readyto-eat breakfast food - other cereals
of that time had to be cooked and/or
soaked overnight before they could be
eaten. With Kellogg’s Cornflakes®, you
just had to add milk!
In the late 1880s, The San had a patient
named Charles W. Post who became a
huge fan of the diet. After he left The San
he began to experiment with grains
too. He soon developed Postum®, a
coffee substitute, and Grape-Nuts®, a
cereal concentrate that contains neither
grapes nor nuts!
In the early 1900s there were over 100
cereal companies located in Battle Creek.
Most of these companies failed due to poor
leadership or production methods, however,
one current company can trace its roots
back to this cereal-boom era - Ralston
Foods (now owned by ConAgra). Ralston
makes many private brand cereals.
Of interesting note, in 1928 the Ralston
plant was destroyed by a fire and the
rival Postum Cereal Company (Post)
allowed Ralston to use some of its idle
equipment for two weeks so they could
make their deliveries!
