Our Marshall Welcome to Marshall, a National Historic Landmark District where time stands still along treelined streets that showcase fully-restored Victorian homes and beautiful garden landscapes. Visitors first notice the grand, white pillared Brooks Memorial Fountain at the center of town - built in 1930 and designed as a replica of Marie Antoinette’s “Temple of Love” garden fountain in Versailles. The fountain features a fascinating light and water show during the summer months. Take a carriage ride to explore the rich history of this idyllic setting, or pick up a brochure for a selfguided walking tour. More adventurous souls can sign up for a Marshall Ghost Tour - a guided tour filled with intriguing tales of haunted mansions. Learn even more history of the area by participating in the very popular Marshall Historic Home Tour, which has opened local homes and museums to visitors every September for over 50 years. Kellogg, interesting details of this 1920’s house, and information about the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station. Rev. John D. Pierce and lawyer Isaac E. Crary, both of Marshall, sat under the Education Oak and designed the Michigan school system. Their format was later adopted by all of the Northwest Territory and became the foundation for the U.S. Land Grant Act of 1861. This Act created schools like Michigan State University all over the United States. 42 Our History: The Cereal City In 1866 the Seventh Day Adventists opened a health institute to promote preventative medicine as a way to help patients with digestive issues, a common ailment during that time when diets were rich in meat and poor in fiber. In 1876 the facility hired a new medical director, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. Dr. Kellogg named the property the Battle Creek Sanitarium (The San, for short). Research was conducted to discover alternative foods that would appeal to the patients tastebuds, but also follow the strict dietary guidelines. One day while Dr. Kellogg and his brother, William K. Kellogg, were trying to develop a breakfast food alternative they were called away and the wheat mixture they had been working on became dry and stale before they could return. Being on a tight budget, they decided to continue with their experiment. They flattened the mixture, hoping for long sheets of dough to come out of the rolling machine - instead, to their surprise, they made flakes! The brothers decided to toast the flakes and serve it to the patients. It was an instant hit. Several years later W.K. Kellogg stopped working for the San, bought the rights to Kellogg’s Cornflakes, and started a business producing and marketing his product. Homemakers flocked to the tasty, readyto-eat breakfast food - other cereals of that time had to be cooked and/or soaked overnight before they could be eaten. With Kellogg’s Cornflakes®, you just had to add milk! In the late 1880s, The San had a patient named Charles W. Post who became a huge fan of the diet. After he left The San he began to experiment with grains too. He soon developed Postum®, a coffee substitute, and Grape-Nuts®, a cereal concentrate that contains neither grapes nor nuts! In the early 1900s there were over 100 cereal companies located in Battle Creek. Most of these companies failed due to poor leadership or production methods, however, one current company can trace its roots back to this cereal-boom era - Ralston Foods (now owned by ConAgra). Ralston makes many private brand cereals. Of interesting note, in 1928 the Ralston plant was destroyed by a fire and the rival Postum Cereal Company (Post) allowed Ralston to use some of its idle equipment for two weeks so they could make their deliveries!
