This month has been a really productive month and for one reason: I thought our Bridge made some really great and positive decisions. The items discussed and passed that will go into motion are very exciting. Let me tell you about just a couple of the good news items. We will have an online apparel store, and it will be up and running in a few weeks. You’ll be able to go right online, through our Squadron website, choose from several styles, sizes and colors of shirts and hats, all at a very nice price. More products will be added as time goes by. Your order can be shipped right to you, or you can actually pick it up at Queensboro’s office right here in town. Joining the Chamber of Commerce in Carolina Beach is still in the making. That will be determined in the near future. This step could prove to be a great form of advertisement and involvement for our Squadron in the large boating community of Carolina Beach. I’ll keep you informed as we go. We are forming a “Partnership” with Southport Power Squadron. They will be joining us in observing our “Local Knowledge” and “On-the-Water Training” which are both separate classes within the ABC Course. Southport has also been invited to join us on our cruises. We will be introducing the “Partnership” details at their next Membership Meeting on 25 March. The Big Event is coming up on 22-23 March 2013. It is the 50th Anniversary of the USPS and the D/27 COW which is being held in Raleigh. CFS&PS is in charge of rounding up Silent Auction items, as well as running the auction. We are also in charge of selling 50/50 tickets during the whole weekend. This will be a grand two-day event with beautiful formal dinners both evenings. We will have a new District Commander by 11:00 PM on 23 March. D/27 Commander Harold O’Briant, JN will be relieved of his position, and D/Lt/C Bob Howd, JN (shown at right) will be assuming that prestigious and very important position. Art and I are really looking forward to going, and we’ll have a full report by the time the next Foghorn comes out. # Executive Officer’s Report Lt/C Ben Van Etten, AP In February, we enjoyed several sunny days with temperatures in the high 70’s. We were fooled into thinking “early spring” and a good time to start getting the boat ready. (I even went fishing one day.) But March came in like a lion with cold, windy days and definitely not boating weather. I know we’re anxious for spring to finally arrive and enjoy getting back on the water, especially since many of us settled here to escape from the type of weather the Northeast and Midwest are experiencing. The Vessel Safety Examiners (VSEs), under the leadership of Lt Kenneth Badoian, S can resume the quest for 300 inspections. We now have 32 qualified examiners in the Squadron, and I know of several more that plan on becoming an examiner. The Boat Show co-chairs, Lt Carol Johnson and Lt Mike Cramer, are planning to participate in several community events this year. The first one will be at the Cape Fear Wildlife Expo 15-17 March held at the Convention Center. I want to congratulate the membership for the quick response filling the “watch” volunteers’ sign-up roster. Most slots were filled on the first day of the announcement. The CFS&PS is also planning to have a table at the Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off in April. The Squadron is planning on having our “Ship’s Store” online in the near future. We’re in the process of teaming with the Queensboro Online Store via a link on our website. Their home office and warehouse are located here in Wilmington. Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn, P, Lt Tim Jenkins, P, and myself have toured the facility and are in the process of choosing an assortment of items (polo shirts, hats, etc.) for membership shopping. There will be a variety of colors, brand names and sizes to choose from, and all will include our logo. An email announcement will be forthcoming. # Visit Your Web Site At: http://www.capefearsailandpowersquadron.org Cape Fear Foghorn pg 2 VOLUME 62, ISSUE 03 CAPE FEAR FOGHORN Administrative Officer’s Report Lt/C Mark Stacy, AP We hope you had fun at the February Membership Meeting and Chili Cook-Off at the Watermark Marina! There were 98 members and 18 guests attending. This was a great way to meet and greet our new members and to have some competing fun. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the meeting including the chefs! In our book, everybody won! But on top, this year’s winners for chili were Donna Lensis (gold), Robert Raleigh, S (silver), and Ann Kreul, S (bronze). The winners for cornbread were Carol Otterbein (gold), 1/Lt Sue VanNote, S (silver), and Sara Raleigh (bronze). The winners for dessert were Diane Upton (gold), Sue LoBalbo, P and Lori Spencer, P (silver), and Wanda Musselwhite (bronze). Beverly Smith received an award for her pasta salad. The 50/50 winner was Sara Raleigh with $200, and the Squadron received $205, the largest sum ever due to the efforts of Genie Lancaster and her guest Mary Anne Lystad. Thanks for contributing! Please review the Boating Activities Schedule in this Foghorn that Lt Rick Sorrenti, AP, our Boating Activities Chair, assembled, and plan your participation. To register for a cruise please use the links distributed to you from Rick. The first cruise is the Shakedown on 29-31 March at the Cape Fear Marina (Bennett Brothers). The second one is Bald Head on 12-14 April, and the third is the important Blessing of the Fleet on 20 April. Also, Rick is looking for captains to organize the cruises, so please let him know which one you would like to lead ([email protected]) It's easy - we'll show you how! . Membership is important to all of us. Sharing boating knowledge with experienced and non-experienced boaters is a real benefit of membership. So are boat insurance discounts, in addition to other discounts on valuable services and products. Also, our great educational curriculum and vessel safety check program are two of the best benefits! Remember, we are the best recruiters so please invite more of your boating acquaintances to attend a meeting to see if they will like the fellowship and the available information. Lt Francine Roche’, Membership Chair, and Lt Julie Jenkins, P, Membership Involvement, are embarking on a new process of involving “sponsors” of new members to increase communication of information, providing a cordial and friendly atmosphere, to connect the new members with existing members, and to get involved with activities so they feel the benefits of belonging to the Squadron. The “sponsor” will also “host” a new member at the Membership Meetings for the first six months of membership. New Members will have separate name tags, so please let all the New Members feel welcome in our Squadron! Please let Francine ([email protected]) or Julie ([email protected]) know if you would like to volunteer to be such a sponsor for a new member. The next Membership Meeting will be 25 March at the Bluewater Grill in Wrightsville Beach starting at 1800 (6:00pm) with a social hour and 1900 (7:00pm) for the meeting. We will learn how to be a lifesaver and perform hands-only CPR. One of the objectives of the Squadron is to provide a practical means to foster fraternal and social relationships among persons interested in boating. Further, it is to encourage and pro- MARCH 2013 Chili Winners, Robert Raleigh (silver), Donna Lensis (gold), Ann Kreul (bronze) Cornbread Winners, Sara Raleigh (bronze), Carol Otterbein (gold), Sue VanNote (silver) Dessert Winners, Wanda Musselwhite (bronze), Sue LoBalbo and Lori Spencer (not pictured) (silver), Diane Upton (gold) The Best and Only Salad Winner, Beverly Smith with Cdr Chardonn mote a high standard of skill in the handling and navigation of boats, and to stimulate members to increase their knowledge of and skill in boating through instruction and participation in boating activities. To keep this objective in front of Members, the 22 April Membership Meeting will also be at the Bluewater Grill and our speaker will be Brandon Roberson, Regional Product Trainer for Garmin International. Brandon will present ideas to utilize a chart plotter and GPS to its fullest capacity. Learn how to set up navigation charts, fishing charts, radar overlay, sonar, tides, currents, celestial data, waypoints, routes, tracks, weather, and man overboard features. If you would like to eat at Bluewater before the meeting, please make your own reservations. # Visit Your Web Site At: http://www.capefearsailandpowersquadron.org Cape Fear Foghorn pg 3 CAPE FEAR FOGHORN VOLUME 62, ISSUE 03 Boating Activities Schedule 2013 DATE PORT/ACTIVITY MARCH 2013 June Cruise South Lt Rick Sorrenti, AP We have a wonderful cruise being planned for June! May I beg to differ? The following two Armenian proverbs will/could change your thinking. First is an observation. “No matter what the water in which one drowns is always an ocean,” and the second is even better since it comes right from a fish's mouth. When the fish was asked, “What news from the sea?” it replied, “I have a lot of news but cannot say it because my mouth is full of water.” Before modern navigation tools, some British ships carried a cage of crows. When a crow was released, he or she would fly directly towards land. Of course, the crow being a crow would take a straight-line route. If that course was followed by the ship, there might be a problem! The ship could be grounded, or worse, wrecked by rocks or shoals in its path. But some might say (not many mind you) the course “straight as a crow flies” was infinitely better than being lost at sea. Some philosophical thoughts on being the “captain.” If the captain says something in the middle of the ocean, is he or she still wrong? Has your significant other made the determination that you are the captain? And finally, remember that the captain is always right, misinformed perhaps, sloppy, crude, bull headed, a bore, even fickle and stupid, but he or she is still the captain and never wrong. All my readers who are captains, can you answer this question. Are you a fast captain or a slow captain? Or are you a half-fast captain? I leave the response up to you and your conscience. MARCH 2013 FIRST BOATING ACTIVITY FOR 2013 THE SHAKEDOWN CRUISE!! Lt/C Mark Stacy, AP The Shakedown Cruise is on 29-31 March at the Cape Fear Marina at Bennett Brothers. Don’t forget dockage is FREE! It is advisable to approach these docks at slack tide which will be at 1325 on 29 March. This boating activity will foster fun and friendship for all who attend. We will have full docktails on Friday. We are currently negotiating with Wilmington Water Tours for a two-hour sunset cruise. They would pick us up at the Cape Fear Marina at 1630 and then pick up others (public) at the Wilmington City Docks at 1700. If you want, you can also bring docktail food on board although they do provide appetizers. Their bar would be available, but you cannot bring liquor, beer or wine on board due to ABC regulations. However, you can bring one cup onboard at the very beginning of the cruise. At the end of the cruise, they will stop downtown for those who would like to have dinner downtown; then stop at the Cape Fear Marina for those who would like to return to their boats or land yachts. The Cape Fear Marina will have a shuttle van from downtown to the Marina for those who want to go out to dinner. This would be a great opportunity to have a nice cruise (with or without dinner), learn a little history of the Cape Fear River, and not have to captain or crew a boat. Remember, the Wilmington is owned by fellow Squadron Members and this would be a way to support your fellow Members. Please let the Shakedown Cruise Captain Lt/C Mark Stacy, AP know ASAP if you will be joining in the fun by clicking here or paste the link below in your address bar to register for the cruise and or just Saturday’s dinner cruise. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgRA0RcXwvuPdDZQSG9HSXpkN1k3V2VTN08wTEpiOEE Lt/C Mark Stacy AP [email protected] (910) 616-4183 Answer to last month’s question: What is the origin of the nautical term “binge?” Originally a nautical term for rinsing or cleaning out something such as a cask of rum. Thus a sailor who had cleaned out such a rum cask was known to have a binge. Now, of course, a “binge” describes any act of immoderate indulgence. This month’s question: When a sailor says, “Don't hand me a line,” what is he or she doing? # Visit Your Web Site At: http://www.capefearsailandpowersquadron.org Cape Fear Foghorn pg 5 VOLUME 62, ISSUE 03 CAPE FEAR FOGHORN MARCH 2013 NEW MEMBERS BIOS Lt Francine Roche’ and Lt Mark Roche’ I'm a New Member I see you at the meetings, But you never say hello. Attending were Sara Raleigh, Francine Hall, Marilyn Freeman, Linda Van Etten, Dottie Ewing, Genie Lancaster, and Beverly Smith. This month’s book was inspiring in several ways. First, it tells of familial love; particularly, as the author notes, it is the story of a mother and her son, who have initiated a private book club during visits to the waiting rooms of doctors and chemotherapy sessions. Second, it is a celebration of an extraordinary woman’s life as the son gets to know and understand Mary Anne Schwalbe, in addition to her role as mother and linchpin of the family. It is Mary Anne’s life and not her death that moves and inspires the reader. And third, it is a tribute to books and to their influence on our lives. And finally, our own lives were richer for having met Mary Anne through her son’s writing. Our next book will be The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis on March 19 at 1:30 at Keena Newland’s home. # Book Club #2 Lt Francine Roche’ It was a small but spirited group that met at Halligan’s for the February book club get-together. We missed Tina, Voncile, Mary Jo and Rosalie, and we look forward to seeing them in March. Since our main scribe, Tina, was not in attendance, the “new kid” was selected to take notes. The reading selection was The Carousel by Belva Plain. It is the story of an American dynasty shattered by secrets and nearly destroyed by greed. A deep and dark family secret is destroying the family from within, while a threat to the family business threatens them from the outside. The book was considered to “break new ground” by Plain and that was true at the time - given that the book was written in 1996. We came to the conclusion that the way we viewed the characters was different relative to our perspective in 2013 versus 1996. There was quite a discussion about the ending of the book, but we all decided it was acceptable to protect the family patriarch from his evil doings in order to protect the survivors from the stigma of being victims. All in all, an enjoyable read! Next month we will review Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and in April, Fatal Absolution by Paul G. Mast (a friend of mine!) Stay tuned! # Book Club #3 Judy McMahon, S Book Club #3 met on March 7th at Don and Judy McMahon's home in Carolina Beach. The discussion of Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard revealed insights into the historical context and events surrounding the assassination and subsequent death of President James A. Garfield in 1881. The book brought alive a forgotten chapter in United States history. Book Club #3 will be reading The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe in preparation for the next meeting, May 9, 2013 at 10 AM at the home of Beverly and Alan Smith. Please note the date change from the first Thursday of the month. # Sunshine Report Lt Jan Hilbert Trudy Holub had inner ear issues, Rick Neumeister had some facial surgery - don’t worry, he’s STILL just as handsome as ever, and Peggy Murray is very recently recovering from an auto accident. All were sent get-well cards to cheer them toward a speedy recovery. As always, our thoughts and prayers are with Beverly Smith as she is continuing her ongoing cancer treatments. A thinking of you card was sent to Bev to let her know that we are all hoping for her best recovery as soon as possible. If you know of anyone in need of a card, please call me at 910350-0902 or E-Mail [email protected] so I can spread “sunshine” from the Squadron. # Visit Your Web Site At: http://www.capefearsailandpowersquadron.org Cape Fear Foghorn pg 9 VOLUME 62, ISSUE 03 Date Event 15 Mar New Members Reception 18 Mar 19 Mar 19 Mar 20 Mar 22-23 Mar 26 Mar 26 Mar 27 Mar 29-31 Mar 1 Apr 2 Apr 4 Apr 9 Apr 12-14 Apr 16 Apr 16 April 20 Apr 22 Apr 23 Apr 23 Apr 30 Apr 4 May 6 May 9 May 9 May 11 May 9-12 May Instructor Development Book Club #1 Junior Navigation Seamanship D/27 50th Anniversary and COW Junior Navigation Book Club #2 Seamanship Shakedown Cruise Executive Committee Meeting Junior Navigation Foghorn Submissions Due Junior Navigation Bald Head Island Cruise Junior Navigation Book Club #1 Blessing of the Fleet & Raft-Up General Meeting Junior Navigation Book Club #2 Junior Navigation ABC Class Executive Committee Meeting Foghorn Submissions Due Book Club #3 ABC Local Knowledge Class Southport Cruise CAPE FEAR FOGHORN MARCH 2013 Location Captain Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn’s House Keena Newland’s House Great Clips Training Center CFCC, Room S-607 Raleigh Great Clips Training Center Halligan’s Restaurant CFCC, Room S-607 Cape Fear Marina Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn’s House Great Clips Training Center Email to Editor Great Clips Training Center Bald Head Island Great Clips Training Center Lt Julie Jenkins, P Lt Francine Roche’ P/C Wilbur Chapman, SN Keena Newland, S Jerrel Freeman, N P/Lt/C Ted Poucher, JN Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn, P Jerrel Freeman, N Tina Miller, S P/Lt/C Ted Poucher, JN Lt/C Mark Stacy, AP Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn, P Jerrel Freeman, N Lt Jean Stacy, S Jerrel Freeman, N Lt Rick Sorrenti, AP Jerrel Freeman, N Seapath Marina and Banks Channel Blue Water Grill Great Clips Training Center Halligan’s Restaurant Great Clips Training Center CFCC, Room L-107 Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn’s House Email to Editor Alan and Beverly Smith’s Home CFCC, Room L-107 Southport Marina Lt Rick Sorrenti, AP Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn, P Jerrel Freeman, N Tina Miller, S Jerrel Freeman, N 1/Lt Ed LoBalbo, AP Cdr Jonnie’ Chardonn, P Lt Jean Stacy, S P/C Alan Smith, AP 1/Lt Ed LoBalbo, AP Steve Worcester, AP Foghorn Published by Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of United States Power Squadrons®, District 27.
