BEAUFORT FALL CRUISE
Lt Jimmy Thomas, Cruise Captain
Three boats participated in the Fall Cruise to Beaufort, NC: Windansea captained by Lt/c Mark Stacy, AP and Lt Jean Stacy, S along
with guests Lt Mark Roche, S and Lt Francine Roche, S, Sea Duck Too captained by Lt Rick Sorrenti, AP and Lt Teresa Sorrenti, S
and Adventures captained by Lt Jimmy Thomas and Gaye Thomas. Adventures and Sea Duck Too departed on Thursday, 10 October
and stopped at Casper’s Marina to enjoy a night in Swansboro dining at Riverview Steak & Seafood Thursday night. We enjoyed a
leisurely breakfast with Elvis at Yana’s Ye Old Drug Store Restaurant on Friday morning. Early Friday afternoon, Windansea overtook
us and, we joined them at Beaufort Docks. After a few libations on the docks while watching the East Carteret High School homecoming parade on the main street, we all enjoyed a very nice (and fast!) dinner at Front Street Grill.
On Saturday, Lt Steve Thompson, S and Lt Susan Thompson joined the Sorrentis on Sea Duck
Too and P/C Ron Tilmon, JN and 1/Lt Sue VanNote, S joined the Thomases on Adventures. All
had a great time at Beaufort Grocery Company on Saturday night, and some of us ended the
night at a wine bar trying to hear the very weak-voiced guitar player whose picture is included at
the right. Rumor has it the rest of the group retired to their boat but danced and sang their way
into the early hours.
After brunch on the dock on Sunday
morning provided by Sue and Ron,
the Stacys, Roches, Thompsons,
Tilman and VanNote departed saying something about having to go to
work on Monday. We missed them
as we toured the museum and several stores as we wondered around
Beaufort the rest of the day. We ended the day at the Spouter Inn for
dinner.
Sea Duck Too and Adventures returned on Monday to Casper’s, and on Tuesday followed a 75-foot Ocean

Commander’s Report
Cdr Jonnie’ K.C. Chardonn, P
We're coming to the end of the year, and the nominations for the 2014 Executive Committee have been announced via email and also in this issue of the Foghorn. The Nominating Committee consisted of six members: P/C Roger Simmons, SN, P/C Ron Tilmon,
JN, Lt Maureen Oeters P, P/C Joan Payne, S, Lt Margaret Lindbert, JN, and Lt Jan Hilbert. This committee really put a lot of time an effort into recruiting members that are qualified to assume the opening positions.
The Commander, Executive Officer, Educational Officer, Administrative Officer, Secretary, Treasurer
make up the Bridge including the Immediate Past Commander and three Members-at-Large. All together this is the Executive Committee. Everyone has a vote except the Commander unless a vote is
needed for a tie breaker.
I've always thought that the new Executive Committee would really benefit from taking the class Operations Training even if it's a refresher course. I'd like to have one right after the new Executive
Committee takes office and then maybe later in the year for the general membership. I've taken it
four times, and each time I learn a lot. I'm guessing that I only take with me what I can apply at the
time. D/27 has three major classes for the top three offices which are given once or twice a year. The
classes are: 101 for the Administrative Officer, 102 for the Executive Officer, and 103 for the Commander. This year is the first time these classes were given at a District event which was held in Raleigh. All three of these classes will be given again in Jacksonville, Florida on 26 Jan 2014 through 2
February 2014.
These are all-day classes worth every minute of your time. You find that this organization is a very
unique and detailed in every aspect. There is a procedure for just about everything which is good
because the top three Bridge officers in a squadron change every year. The other positions are proposed to be two or three years positions. I do know that there is one squadron in our District that has
gone to two-year term for the top three positions. Of course, the officers holding the positions would
have to agree to another year (and be aware it is a two-year term when accepting it). After that, the
nominating committee would have to ask them again. I can see that idea being a point of discussion
someday for this squadron. I do understand several reasons why this may be a good idea. We are a
very large squadron, and there are many large events that are repeated every year. The Administra(Continued on page 4)

Executive Officer’s Report
Lt/C Ben Van Etten, AP
The Executive Committee recently approved a new (modified) logo for our Power
Squadron. This change was initiated to improve USPS branding and includes the phrase
“America’s Boating Club.” This change will occur over a period of time since most of us
have hats and polo shirts that display the old logo. Queensboro does have the new logo
and future orders will include it. I invite members (especially new members) to check out the Ship’s
Store on our website and order a Power Squadron shirt from a multitude of options.
To promote our Squadron, vessel safety examinations, and educational
opportunities, a sign will be erected in a prominent location at the Inlet
Watch Yacht Club. Many boaters are still not aware of the USPS and the
service we provide to the boating community. I recently inspected a new
boat owner’s vessel, and he mentioned that he completed an online
boating safety course. During our discussion it was apparent that he knew
very little about boating and now plans on taking our next ABC course.
This could have possibly been another case of an accident looking for a
place to happen.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is continuing their quest to have Ethanol (E-10) added
to all fuels, including pleasure and commercial boating. The Coast Guard has not come up with a
definitive decision on this and says further study is required. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure
out that E-10 promotes water absorption, corrosion and over time actually dissolves rubber-like parts
in hoses and gaskets. Fuel leakage is not good! It also causes “gum” in the fuel tank that eventually
clogs filters. There are many older boats that contain components placed in service long before the
EPA decided that E-10 is the answer to air pollution.

“Doing it Right”
The National Membership Committee of the United
States Power Squadrons has developed a “Doing it
Right” questionnaire of what healthy squadrons do
to ensure their existence from year to year. This list is used as
the basis for developing a questionnaire to be used by squadrons for the self analysis of their recruiting and retention programs, their education classes, their VSCs, cruises, etc.
CFS&PS just completed and submitted the “Doing It Right” survey to National and D27. There is recognition to Squadrons who
complete most of the activities who are “Doing It Right.” This
year CFS&PS completed all 25 of 25 activities. Please ask an
ExCom Member or Lt/C Mark Stacy, AP for additional information or how you can assist with any of these activities [email protected].
Annual Membership Meeting
Join your fellow Squadron Members for the Annual Membership
Meeting & festive Holiday Party on 9 December at the Landfall
Nicklaus Club House, 800 Sunrunner Place, at the Landfall

sound. The musical menu includes beach music, the best of
60’s, Classic Rock, 70’s Disco, and today’s hottest new songs.
The fee for this special evening dinner and dancing will be
$40.00 per person and must be paid before the 29 November

Change of Watch
Our final event of the Squadron year will also be held at Landfall’s Nicklaus Club House on 18 January. This event, our Annual Change of Watch (COW) Ceremony, is an occasion where
the Officers and the Bridge for the old year are retired, and the
new Officers and the Bridge are installed to serve the ensuing
year. This will be an entertaining evening with lots of awards
and presentations, and even a bit of humor. Attending the meeting does not require you to have dinner. There will be a social
hour from 1730-1830 (5:30-6:30pm), dinner from 1830-1930
(6:30-7:30pm) followed with the COW. The fee for the dinner will

Get Your “Baby” Ready for Winter
OK, the temperature is dropping; you've cleaned out all the
leaves in the gutters, serviced the car, but what plans do you
have for your boat?? Are you going to haul out at a yard or store
it on your trailer? Lots to prep work ahead if you want to be a happy boater next spring. Water freezing (fresh and raw), fuel stability issues and the ever-present corrosion are important issues to
address.
Here is a great link to an article listing things you should be doing:

If you are leaving it all to a boat yard or mechanic, make sure
they will prep your “baby” properly. And while your “baby” is hibernating, why not increase your knowledge of boating weather by
taking the Weather Course this winter?

tive Officer (AO) who takes care of all the Internal Affairs has a
job and a half, and thank goodness for Assistants. However, if
you notice this year the Nominating Committee has announced
the slate for 2014 without an Assistant Administrative Officer or
an Assistant Secretary. Having served as AO, I have to admit
that position was the most fun of all of them. I'd love to see the
AO position roll over for two years, and that's just what has
happened this year. Lt/C Mark Stacy, AP is holding that position for two years, however, he definitely needs an Assistant.
Anyone that has an interest in this position or just wants to find
out more about what it would entail, please contact the Nominating Committee listed above.
The same goes for the Assistant Secretary position. Lt/C Tom
Bello, AP is holding that position for the 3rd year, however, he
does need an Assistant to just go to the Executive Meetings to
take notes. Tom works out of town and our Executive Meetings
are on the 1st Monday of every month. Unfortunately that timing does not always work with Tom's work schedule. This
would be a great opportunity for a member to find out more
about the USPS, a lot more about the Bridge, how this organization works and to see it from the inside. So anyone interested in that position, please contact the Nominating Committee.

Veteran’s Day of Hope
Lt Sue VanNote, S
On Friday, 8 November, 13 members of the Cape Fear Sail &
Power Squadron volunteered to serve those who served our
country. We signed up to work with WARM (Wilmington Area
Rebuilding Ministry, Inc.) on a project to build a wheel chair
ramp for a disabled veteran. At 8:30 am, our team arrived at Mr.
Ronald’s home to meet the project leader from WARM. Representing our squadron were P/C Ron Tilmon, JN, Lt/C Rick Sorrenti, AP, Gaye Thomas, Lt Jimmy Thomas, Shelby Battle, and
Lt O.B. Battle, P, Lt Juan Perez, JN, Hollis Perez, Lt/C Ben
VanEtten, AP, Harry Otterbein, AP, Jim Boyd, P, Dottie Villers

We hauled lumber, dug
post holes, set posts,
put up railings and even
raked some pine straw.

Book Club #1
Marilyn Freeman, P
Book Club #2
Christina Miller, S
Nancy Barnet hosted the club on October 17th for a discussion
of An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England by
Brock Clark. In attendance were Audry Bickwid, Nancy Barnet,
Genie Lancaster, Francine Hall, Sara Raleigh, Dottie Ewing,
and Marilyn Freeman.
On Oct. 22nd the ladies of Book Club #2 enjoyed a sunny afternoon luncheon and book discussion at the South Beach Grill on
Wrightsville Beach. We were disappointed that fried green tomatoes were not on the lunch menu since one of our gals raved
about them! How ironic it would have been if that had been the
name of our book.
The plot revolves around a boy who accidentally sets Emily
Dickenson’s house on fire and, through his own ineptitude,
goes to prison as an arsonist. In the fire, two people are killed.
This one act haunts him throughout his life. When a series of
copycat arsons on other famous houses happen, he tries to
track down the arsonist, meanwhile being under suspicion himself.
A lively discussion revolved around why members did or did not
like the book. The characters were all dysfunctional and not
easy to like, for one thing. The satire was a little too heavily
done for comfort. Rather than making the reader laugh at the
characters, it made the writer’s personality the center of the
reader’s attention. It is not a book for light entertainment. But it
did have its funny moments, and the writing was excellent. It
was a quirky read and not one to easily know what would come
next.
The next book to be discussed is The Secret of the Nightingale
Palace by Dana Sachs. The discussion will be at Nita Neumeister’s home on November 19. #
Our selection for the month was a novel by M.L. Stedman titled
The Light Between Oceans. It is a mesmerizing tale of a lighthouse keeper and his wife who live on an isolated island off the
coast of Australia. The light keeper is a quiet man of principle
and his wife is a vivacious sprite. They try for years to have a
child but each attempt ends in a miscarriage. Shortly after the
third miscarriage a boat appears on their shore. It contains a
dead man and a live baby. The wife views the baby “as a gift
from God,” and the decision is made to keep the baby as their
own. This decision has a dramatic effect on their lives and the
lives of many others. The reader becomes personally involved in
the lives of the each of the characters, who is right and who is
wrong, what is fair or foil, who is better or worse. The complexities of morality result in an emotional rollercoaster.
Although the story is set in 1920’s, Francine Roche pointed out,
“It is a very contemporary story. There are so many ethical
questions.” This novel is highly recommended by our Club. It is
not a happy tale but it is riveting.
We will meet again on Nov. 12st at Hops Supply Co. on Oleander to review Between Sisters by Kristin Hannah. #
Book Club #3
Lt/C Ben Van Etten, AP
Book Club #3 held their meeting at the home of Lt/C Ben Van
Etten, AP which included a very interesting discussion of The
Things They Carried written by Tim O’Brien. It was about a platoon of soldiers in the Vietnam War and was based on O’Brien’s
experiences as an infantryman. The Things They Carried works
heavily with meta-fiction, employing a writing tactic called Verisimilitude, a style that meshes the factual with the fictional.
O’Brien introduces soldiers that he served with and goes into
some detail about not only what they carried in their backpacks,
but what they mentally carried after the war.
Attendees were P/C Alan Smith, AP, Lt/C Don McMahon, AP,
Judy McMahon, Shelby Battle, and Doris Smith, S. The next
book discussion is The Razor’s Edge by W. Somerset
Maugham and will be hosted by Doris Smith on 2 January
2014. We would like to bring in two new members. If interested
please call Ben at 910-313-1481. #

A thinking of you card was sent to former member Dr.
Fred Zechman who has moved with his wife, Shirley
Salzano to Durham, NC. Fred is going through two tough procedures, and he needs our prayers and good wishes for a successful recovery. Please remember him in the days ahead.
A get well card was sent to Phyllis Sammis who is recovering
from surgery for a broken right wrist. Our thoughts are with her
as well, and we send best wishes for a speedy and complete
recovery.

Halloween Party Thrilled The Members
Lt/C Mark Stacy, AP
The 28 October Halloween Party was ghoulish fun with 74 members and nine guests with 52 dressed in frightening, funny, and very
creative costumes. Michael Jackson’s Thriller song was our theme song. Among the costumes we had jelly fish, dice, pirates, witches
and more. All in all, our fellow eerie, ghastly and playfully skittish squadron Members had a good time.
Everyone looked great, but there were a few that “turned up
the heat.” The Member’s Awards went to P/C Alan Smith, AP
and Beverly dressed as Buoys “176” & “177”, and Larry King
and Robin dressed as the Silver Surfer and Natalie Portman
from the Black Swan. Both are shown at the right.
The Commander’s Award went to Dick Patton, S and Myra
Fogleman, S dressed as Zombies. And, the Halloween Committee Award went to P/C Nita Neumeister, AP dressed as
the Catwoman. Both are shown at the left.
For the last 5 years, we also have had the Rubber
Chicken Award. Last year’s “winners,” Ray Bramhall, P and Pam awarded it this year to Doug Murray dressed as the Peace Man, shown to the left.
Next year Doug will “award” it to another Member.
The 50/50 managed by Lt Rick Sorrenti, AP raised
$430 – a record! The receiver was Larry King,
shown below. We also had time to hit the tables
with some casino and Bingo games after the
awards with some Halloween music.

The (SEO) Educational Department Officer organizes all the
classes and their schedules, where they will be held, and
makes sure all the instructors are qualified and know their material. This department is the roots of USPS and is the reason
why this organization exists. The Executive Officer (XO) position takes care of the External Affairs and can be a little less
time consuming, but it is as busy as you want it to be and the
effort you want to put into it. Lt/C Ben Van Etten, AP has been
real productive all the time, all year long. The XO also has a big
role in helping the Commander execute its duties, and a large
part is getting prepared for the upcoming commander's position.
The XO is a great back-up for the Commander and covers for
the events that the Commander cannot make.
After the announcements are made of the new nominated Executive Committee, the new Bridge will start looking at the Organization Chart to see what positions need to be filling. All of these
95 positions on the Organizational Chart are usually filled by the
end of January because National and District will be asking for
that precise information. We will always need your help, on the
organizational teams, on the website, dealing with computers,
writing articles, teaching, and I could go and on. There is a spot
for your expertise so if you just say yes; the rewards are well
worth it. You'll end up making friends from all walks of life and
from all over the world. As for a place for me, I will be the Immediate Past Commander. I'll be in charge of getting the port-apotties for the 2014 Shrimparoo but better yet, I have been
asked to be the Aide to the upcoming District 27 Commander,
D/Lt/C Burt Pearson, SN which I have accepted.
We'll see you at the Annual Christmas Gala on 9 December! Be
sure and get your reservations in by going to our website,
www.capefearsailandpowersquadron.org and look under
“Squadron Events” in the left column. You can register by paying by credit card right on line now. What a great convenience!
Don't forget the Ship’s Storewww.capefearsquadron.qbstores.com. You can order any
number of things, all the way from shirts to hats, blankets to
computer cases, and much more. You can even order items
without the logos. You can also pick up your order from the

Last year, Mark and I had the honor laying
wreaths at the Wilmington National Cemetery, sponsored by Wreaths Across America.
There are 5000 graves, and last year there
were a little over 400 wreaths. As of today there are only 352
wreaths sold, 34 of which have been sold through a local group
Human Wall for Fallen Soliders. This group has set up a fundraising page to try to help cover ALL of our heroes final resting
places. You can also collect checks made payable to Wreaths
Across America, give to me, and I can get receipts for anyone
who needs one for tax purposes. FINAL SALE DAY IS DECEMBER 2, AND WREATHS WILL BE PLACED ON DECEMBER
14TH. Anyone is welcome to attend the ceremony.
Click on the following link, and it will take you to the order
page. On the right side is a red rectangle which says "Support
NCHWFFSo1, Human Wall for Fallen Soldiers" You can purchase a wreath in honor/memory of your special hero and have
an e-card sent to their family with a personal message from you.
Grave specific purchases are not available, but if all the graves

First Annual Squadron Golf Scramble
Lt/C Ben Van Etten, AP
The first Annual Squadron Golf Scramble was held on Friday, 1
November 13. The participants enjoyed the golf outing at the
Beau Rivage Golf and Resort so much the consensus was to
make it an annual event. This year it was a short notice, impromptu event, with only 16 players; so with more prior planning
we can make it even better. The winning team included Lt David
Echevarria, P, Helen Bordeaux, P, Lt Mike Cramer, S, and Steve Worcester, AP. Second place went to P/C Nita Neumeister,
AP, P/D/C Jerry Hall, SN, P/C
Mary Jo Worcester, S and Lt/C
Ben Van Etten, AP. #

My Take On Down to the Sea on Ships, Yachts,
Boats and Other Things That Float
Ken Badoian, S
Bananas, Yachts, Navy Ships, War, and more...
Henry Flagler, the wealthy Florida land speculation and railroad
builder who built the railroad from Miami to Key West, enjoyed
yachting during its gilded, golden age. He was a member of
many yacht clubs including the New York Yacht Club. In 1890,
Flagler decided to build a new yacht which he named Alicia
after his wife Alice. Harlan and Hollingsworth of Wilmington,
Delaware received the commission to build a two-masted
schooner with a three-cylinder steam engine. Alicia was 180feet in length with a 160-foot waterline. The vessel had a 24-foot
beam, displaced just over 300 tons, and drew 9 feet, 6 inches of
water. The building and fitting-out cost was $113, 000, almost
$3,000,000 in 2013 dollars.
When the United States declared war against Spain in 1898, it
did so with a small but building Navy. As yet, there was no
Great White Fleet. The war with Spain would include extensive
blockading duties, and in order to bring the Navy up to strength
and provide ships that could be used for blockading duties,
Congress authorized the purchase of more than 100 private
yachts and corporate vessels. Other tycoons of the age sold
ships to the Navy. Their yachts included JP Morgan's Corsair,
Ogden Goelet's Mayflower, J.D. Spreckels 'Fearless, two Standard Oil ships Atlas and Hercules. Flagler's the Alicia, the star of
our story, was also purchased.

The Navy removed Alicia's aft mast, added armament, and renamed it the USS Hornet. When the ship was fully manned by
Navy crew, she was sent directly to the battle zone. Hornet and
her crew quickly developed a reputation as a capable Navy
ship. To be continued…
Answer to last month's question: What is the recipe for Rum
Punch? 1.5 oz Barbados rum, 1 oz cognac, 3 oz boiling water,
.5 oz lemon juice, 1 bar spoon brown sugar (or to taste), a few
cloves, garnish with a spiral of lemon peel. Shiver me timbers,
Matey!
This month's question: What are the two most useful paint
brushes in the Navy? #
