Fairfax County Area Profile
Town of Herndon
Two miles east of Washington Dulles International
Airport and straddling the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267),
the Town of Herndon is a dynamic office, retail and
hotel center that has preserved its small-town character.
The town blends the old and the new with a foundation that provides solid support for small, medium and
large businesses. In addition to having a wide range
of office space options, the town also is one of Fairfax
County’s largest industrial/flex-space markets.
Due to its proximity to Dulles Airport, the submarket has 10 hotels
with more than 1,560 rooms.
Major employers include Amazon Web Services, the Air Line Pilots
Association, Boeing, Exelis, Harris Corporation, MicroPact, Northwest
Federal Credit Union, Parsons Brinckerhoff and the federal government.
The Center for Innovative Technology promotes technological innovation by linking businesses to Virginia colleges and universities and also
houses the Mach37 cybersecurity business accelerator.
Residents and employees have access to the nearby Wiehle-Reston
East Metro station. In 2018, Metro’s Silver Line will be extended to
Herndon, the airport and beyond, providing additional access to this
area from the entire Washington, D.C., metro region. Town leaders
are planning mixed-use development around the Herndon rail station.
The Town of Herndon maintains a small-town charm with parks, a
town green, recreation center, library and other community assets.
Herndon’s historic downtown includes numerous restaurants and
shops and is a venue for fairs and festivals throughout the year.
Money magazine has named Herndon one of the “100 Best Places
to Live” in the United States.
