I want to thank Brian, Hank, Terri, and Bill for their tremendous job in providing this tasty dinner for our membership. Attendance was somewhat limited, but it is my hope that future dinners will be better attended. It has come to my attention that occasionally the air conditioner (A.C.) is running while the doors are propped open. The principle of A.C. is that it removes moisture from the ambient air and, therefore, cools the air. By opening the doors, outside warm, moist air is allowed in and causes the air conditioning unit to overwork and become ineffective. This becomes a costly element for the Post to absorb. Please, please…LEAVE THE DOORS CLOSED IF THE A.C. IS ON. Thanks to Greg, the thermostat has been programmed, which should best serve our members. Mayor Oberg and the City Council have proclaimed August 6 as Vietnam Veterans Day in Prescott. August 6 is the 52nd anniversary of the Congressional passage of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, arguably beginning the Vietnam War. Thanks to Dan and Phil for reminding our members to be in attendance for the proclamation at the Council chambers on July 26th. God Bless our Country and our Post 6 members Fred (Cont’d) 1 UNIT PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE In the midst of the summer sunshine and heat waves of Arizona, Unit 6 sizzles with activity. In June, Unit 6 held the initiations of new members and installed new officers for the year 2016-2017. The Officers List is as follows: Madame President: Lou Lucas-Caldwell 1st Vice: Sharon Keene-Wright 2nd Vice: Janice Tutone Treasurer: "Corky" Hintz Sargent @ Arms: Shirley Smiley Secretary: Kathy Casey Chaplain: Mary Bisson E-Committee: Sherry Buchanan; Pat Wittman; Donna Martin Congratulations to all new and veteran officers! It's going to be an exceptional year. In a "few" words, my beginnings with the American Legion Auxiliary began as a founder of the Oceanside, California Unit with Madame President Patty Sanborn. Recently, I served as Historian and Photographer for Unit 6 in Prescott. Since moving to Prescott in 2009 I am happily married 3 1/2 years. Thank you Juanita, Corky and Unit 6 for all you do for veterans and their families and...each other. Please note: A First Friday Dinner will not be held for July. Rather, the Auxiliary is hosting a July 4th celebration 12-2pm. Tickets $5. Friends welcome. This 4th of July we also celebrate the Birth Anniversary of one of our veteran Auxiliary members, "Bert" Fritz. Happy Days Everyone! For God and the United States of America Lou Lucas-Caldwell Madame President Unit 6 THROUGH THE YEARS It has been my honor to serve as Aux. Poppy Chairman, always with the help of Sherry Buchanan, CoChairman and the support of all our American Legion Family members. This year our volunteers at Safeway & Fry’s were; Irene Mullins, Joanne Cavett, Nancy Anderson Murl Preble, Terri Doran & Sherry Buchanan. GREAT WORK GALS! Many thanks also to all who donated Poppy Certificates and who supported our Armed Forces Day “Poppy Picnic”. A special THANK YOU to Joe & Deb W. and Al & Donna T. AND of course Dan, for his artistry in composing your Poppy Certificates! “Thanks for the Memories” For God & Country Peg Tillmans Poppy Chairman (Cont’d) 2 2005 - 2016 SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION We did not have any SAL members notify us that they wished to run for officer positions so our current officers will continue in the following positions; Commander - Alan Blaine Finance Officer/Adjutant- John Baker. Mike Davidson has joined as a new member of the Club Committee for the Post. It is almost time to start our early membership drive for 2017. Another year is flying by! We will be sending out a SAL membership newsletter soon and prefer to send an email to you if possible and if you wish to receive notices in this format. If you have not done so, please update your contact information with John or Alan. I would like to thank and recognize the following individuals for their continued volunteer assistance at SAL events; Katie Bailey, Tracey Peters, Terri James & Emily Blaine. We are very grateful for all your help - we really couldn't do it without you!!! That's all for now. See you at the Post! Alan Blaine Squadron 6 Commander ALR 6 In July, Riders from ALR 6 attended the Department Organizational Meeting in Phoenix, attended the monthly group services at the Prescott National Cemetery, held the second leg of our annual Another Lousy Ride, attended the Post’s Vets Pot Luck, attended the Legion District 8 meeting and participated in six PGR missions – one of which was an escort of a WWII veteran from Prescott to Phoenix and another was an escort and flag line or a fellow ALR 6 Rider and Post 6 member – Oscar (Oz) Ruiz. Oz was a Charter member of ALR 6, and we will all miss him as he transfers to Post Everlasting. UPCOMING EVENTS – AUGUST 7 will be another great Sunday breakfast – homemade egg, bacon & potato breakfast pizza. AUGUST 20 – the third and final leg of our Another Lousy Ride Trifecta will be held. ALL LEGION FAMILY MEMBERS CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE MYSTERY RUN. Here’s a chance to win money – have fun – and we’ll have great raffle items too. REGISTRATION IS FROM 9-10 AM, and lunch will also be served.. We’d love to see more of our Legion family participate in some of our ALR activities and events, including Another Lousy Ride. You don’t have to ride a motorcycle to participate. For God and Country, John Moffitt, ALR 6 Secretary POST 6 NEEDS YOUR HELP! Our Post website recently suffered a major setback. For reasons unknown, the web-server suddenly and without contacting us removed all embedded content. The Post’s I.T. Director, Bill Sheble, has reestablished the site and has started reconstruction. Where we need your help is in the area of providing pictures, organization information, i.e. Auxiliary, SAL, and ALR. Without these updates, the site will be very bland and uninteresting. Please send pictures, stories, etc. to Bill: [email protected]. DISTRICT 8 MEETING Post 40 – Chino Valley will be hosting the next District 8 meeting on Saturday July 23. E-Board meets at 11:30 AM. Lunch follows at Noon and general membership meeting begins at 1 PM. (Cont’d.) 3 FROM the BAR MANAGER Hi Everyone, Hope you are all doing great! My the time flies, as of this writing we’re already in mid summer and man or woman is it hot!!! First of all I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our new Commander, Fred Bursey, so lets give him a big warm welcome when you see him! Well as you know, I took some time off to see the state of Washington, saw some pretty country! But I have to admit I am glad to be back (because I know you were all missing me) Ha, Ha. Thanks Julie for covering for me! As you all know the 4th is right around the corner, so lets all celebrate at the Legion having a cold beverage of choice! Well, till next time please be safe and enjoy the rest of the summer!!!! And now for Skippy's Quote: “I'm on a Whiskey diet....... I’ve lost three days already!” Skip Waller Bar Manager HONOR / COLOR GUARD Your Honor Guard rendered a final tribute to 44 of our departed brothers and sisters in the months of May and June. Since June signifies the end of the Legion fiscal year, I have a few statistics to mention. The Honor Guard presented Military Honors for 286 of our departed brothers and sisters over the course of that period. This figure, although slightly fewer than our average annual numbers of service shows the dedication to duty that the members of this TEAM sustain. These individuals have, collectively, given up more than 6,000 hours of their personal time to render this distinct honor. Speaking of numbers, the squad’s van has traveled more than 2,800 miles to bring our squad and equipment to these many events. If you will, consider also the many miles that the members of the squad provide in driving their personal vehicles to perform their duties. This is done without any compensation to them. The Department of Defense has finally officially certified Post 6 Honor Guard. Not all VSO Honor Guards have this distinction. For more than 21 years we knew what we were doing and that we were doing it very well but it’s now been confirmed by the D.O.D. In addition to the many services we performed as an Honor Guard, the Color Guard, the acknowledged visibility of Post 6, was on-site for 42 separate events during this past year. In May, and for the fourth time, the Color Guard led the Yarnell Daze Parade. I cannot say the same for the upcoming Rodeo Days® Parade. In past years, I was told frequently that Post 6 Honor Guard’s leading this parade is a “Tradition”. Well, traditions come and go I guess, so this year we are gone. The rodeo committee has once again chosen to go a different way. Their focus on the rodeo rather than the recognition of this, our Independence Day, has caused the Honor Guard to withdraw from the parade entirely. We, the Honor Guard, do not consider ourselves to be special but as veterans, we object to the committee’s decision to disregard all veterans’ on a very special day of celebration. Keep the women and men of Post 6 Honor/Color Guard in your prayers and give them a nod and a “Thank you!” for their commitment to the duty they perform. Not everyone can do this job! We will be having a raffle for a $20 gift certificate to use at Sportsman’s Warehouse. Tickets are available at the bar ~ $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will be held September 8. You don’t need to be present to win. “Our Honor To Serve” Dan Tillmans Commander Honor/Color Guard (Cont’d) 4 ADJUTANT’S NOTES I would first like to say thank you to outgoing commander Edward Estel; it was truly an honor and pleasure to serve as your adjutant. I would also like to officially welcome our new commander Fred Bursey. I look forward to serving as your adjutant in the coming year. It's that time again Post 6. You'll be receiving your 2017 renewal notices soon. Just do one thing quickly; open your wallet, fish out your Legion card and make SURE it says 2016 in red at the top. If it says 2015, get your $40.00 in gear and get it to the Post without delay. I still have some 2016 cards unclaimed. Peace. Eric "Easy" Schultz Post 6 Adjutant CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Ever heard of syncretism? The term describes something promoted with stunning regularity in the present (so-called) post Christian environment. It is the tendency to dilute a "religion" or philosophy by combining two or more "belief systems" together and thus diluting both by equalizing the valid with the invalid. The original looks nothing like what has "evolved". The effort has led to the political correct error that dictates all religions and "spiritual philosophies" are of equal value. To a Christian this would readily be classified as heretical. The Bible, in the Old Testament, (Isa. ch. 53) tells of a coming Messiah Who would suffer and die for the sins of His children and the New Testament proves out His promise in the Gospels (means good news). His gift to you and me means nothing if we do not accept it and be thankful for it. Does that mean we never sin again or all difficulties are over? Nope. Faith in the finished work of God the Son on our behalf is the start of life's greatest adventure. He keeps sinners saved in spite of our human weakness and grants true freedom from well deserved consequences. May He help us in thought, word and deed that we honor Him and those groups and persons with whom we interact. Remember that we are created in His image and we are not, as some may believe, an invasive species but the enemy of our souls is an invasive species,.......... temporarily. The Lord's next "appearance" will not be as a suffering servant. Gary “G-man” Sheldon Post Chaplain Our Chaplain requests comments via telephone or e-mail. (Dan) [email protected]/ (928) 848-9850. QUEEN OF HEARTS RAFFLE The weekly drawing for the Queen of Hearts Raffle is held on Thursday evenings at 6 PM. Sherry Buchanan drew the Queen recently and took home than $2,100.00. We have started all over, so come in a try your luck. ** GREAT DEAL! ** Post 6 member, Michael Soumokil, a sales associate at Tim’s Auto Group, has received authorization from management to offer a special deal for Post 6 members and their families. If a Post member goes to Tim’s Hyundai (1006 Commerce Dr.) asks for Michael and then purchases a car, new or used, they will receive $500 off the purchase price. In addition, Tim's Auto Group will send a check for $150.00 to Post 6. This is a great deal, good for you and good for Post 6! Michael tells me that all blood relatives and friends of Post 6 Family members are eligible for this deal. You can call Michael at (928) 379-9881. (Cont’d) 5 ROVING REPORTER NEEDED!
