WELCOME!
Thank you for choosing Dortmund. You're sure to like it here. Dortmund has everything
that makes a city trip worthwhile: fascinating museums, captivating music events, moving
performances, venerable industrial cathedrals, diverse restaurants, impressive shopping
opportunities and, of course, first-class football. Get away from your everyday routine
and take time to smell the roses, as almost half of the city consists of parks, forests, fields
and meadows. Night owls can dive into a vibrant city. You might be thinking to yourself,
"there's just no way." It's true! Come and see for yourself!
In any case, you should be open to new insights and
visions. You see, here there's a significant symbiosis
of fascinating contrasts. There are loads of new things
happening in Dortmund, but it wouldn't be possible
without the old. An enormous leisure and recreation
area, including a large lake, is emerging on the site
of a former steel plant grounds. Furnaces and factory
buildings from times of production will be left standing,
some to take on new purposes. Elsewhere, trees
growing from the pipes of a former coking plant create
a wild and romantic backdrop for daydreaming. The
Dortmund Konzerthaus (concert house), with its first-class
concerts on an international level, is the epicentre of the
scene in the Brückstraße district. This is the place to be
for youths up to 25 years of age. A spectacular new
centre for art and creativity is being made from the high
rise building of the former Union brewery.
Perhaps beautiful is not the most fitting description of Dortmund - although most of its residents
consider it so. However, you can rest assured: there are certainly beautiful places. Set out to
discover them! The brochure you're holding in your hand will help you on your journey of discovery through Dortmund, although it can only offer brief snapshots of the variety that makes up
Dortmund, of course.
Should you still have questions or want something more, just turn to the team at DORTMUNDtourismus or RUHR.VISITORCENTER Dortmund. Alternatively, you can have a look
online: www.dortmund-tourismus.de. You could also ask the people you see walking
down the street. The Dortmunders will gladly tell you where to find the especially nice
places in there city. Enjoy!
Perhaps you already have some associations with Dortmund; you may have heard or read
this or that about the city. Many think of beer and football, coal and steel, or perhaps structural
transformation, logistics, or even on microsystem engineering. All of the above is totally correct.
However, it's also fairly wrong. Although Dortmund and its people are traditionally strongly
associated with their work, the city is much more than a place of business or the sum of its
branches.

24 HOURS
You have just one day to get to know Dortmund? That's okay - even short visits to Dortmund are worthwhile. They provide a first and certainly lasting impression of the city's
character. Of course, you should concentrate on select attractions in order to enjoy everything. You can be sure that this short visit will make you leave wanting more!
You've earned a break after an exhausting tour. You'll find exactly
what you want for every taste and at every time of year directly
in the city. Tip: as soon as the temperatures warm up, the bistros
and restaurants set up tables on the Alter Markt (Old Market), on
the Kleppingstraße and in the smaller lanes; it's a favourite place
for a light meal, to see, and to be seen.
2:00 p.m. Dortmund Football Cult
Now the sightseeing tour goes beyond the centre. An absolute must for all visitors - at the very
least - is to see the romping grounds of the home football club BV Borussia Dortmund 09
(p. 20), the Signal Iduna Park (p. 20). The huge yellow steel roof bracings can be seen from
afar - even from Gelsenkirchen during good weather. Those who want to get closer to the black
and yellow passion should visit the Borusseum (p. 21), which presents the history of the club
and its fans. Perhaps a stadium tour will be offered while you're there.
7:00 p.m. Cultural Enjoyment
After a satisfying meal in a Dortmund restaurant, it's now time for one of the countless cultural
events. Pick something that suits your fancy from the comprehensive programme offered by the
city. You could take advantage of one of the high-class renditions at the Dortmund Konzerthaus (p. 13). Alternatively, you could see a performance at the Theater Dortmund (p. 14).
No matter which of the events you choose, you're guaranteed enjoyment of the highest calibre.

1:00 p.m. Break
Close to the stadium are the Westfalenhallen Dortmund (p. 15). Hall 1, with its rotating C and
U on the roof, is world-renowned for its inspiring atmosphere. The next stop on the sightseeing
tour is the Westfalenpark Dortmund (p. 21), located nearby. Take a walk through the city's
most popular destination for an outing to enjoy pure nature with themed gardens as well as the
German Rose Garden. You can also see for yourself that Dortmund is about half green space
with a panorama view from the viewing platform of the television tower Florian (p. 21).
Get ready for a tour through the Dortmund city centre. The map of the city centre at the beginning of this brochure will assist in getting orientated and will help you navigate your way to the
sights. Stroll along the Westen- and Ostenhellweg to capture some of the urban feeling of the
largest city in the Ruhrgebiet. Have a look every now and then at the facades above the catchy
displays in the storefronts. You'll discover several Art Nouveau and Gründerzeit buildings alongside sleek modern edifices made of glass and steel or other buildings from the 1950s and 60s.
Almost 98% of the city centre was destroyed in the Second World War, which resulted in this
contrast-rich mix of architectural styles. Visit one or more of the four city churches. Inside you
can discover certain treasures, such as the "Golden Miracle of Westphalia" in St. Petri, a gilded
carved altar from the Guild of St. Luke, based in Antwerp. St. Marien houses an altar made by
the Dortmund master Conrad von Soest, and on the border of the
altar in the Propstei Church, you can see the oldest extant depiction of
Dortmund. The viewing platform from the tower of St. Reinoldi offers a
beautiful view over the rooftops of the city centre.
You certainly shouldn't miss on visiting the Dortmund U (p. 12). The
gilded U on the roof of the high-rise building that formerly housed the
Union brewery is a much-loved landmark of the city. Today it is a centre
for arts and creativity, a bustling site for 20th and 21st century art and
culture, for research and education, media art, and digital programmes. The Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte
(Museum of Art and Cultural History) (p. 14) will provide completely different insights. It's the oldest museum of its kind in the
Ruhr region and has collected everything - the valuable, rare, typical, everyday - since 1883.

Your second day in Dortmund should begin with a hearty breakfast. After all, you've
already completed the DORTMUNDvisit.24 hours and have experienced quite a lot. However, it's not as if there's nothing more to see. Even after day two, you still have many
attractive reasons to return. The people of Dortmund would be happy to welcome you!
Visit one of the most extraordinary icons of industrial culture, the Zeche Zollern (p. 18) colliery
in Dortmund-Bövinghausen. Don't be confused when you arrive! Despite the magnificent brick
facades, opulent crenellated gables and corner towers around the green cour d'honneur - coal
was mined here. Besides, the resplendent impression of a noble's residence was fully intentional. This "model mine" was intended to present the power and economic success of the
Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG company. You should
also have a look at the mine housing development
Kolonie Landwehr with the director's villa and the
houses for foremen and officials in the neighbourhood.
It's worth it!
12:30 p.m. Shopping Spree
Now you can take some time for a leisurely shopping
tour. Dortmund’s city has everything available that
makes shopping an enjoyable experience. Don’t forget
to take a breather, though. You've still got a lot to see
and do (p. 24/25).

By the High Middle Ages, the city was granted the jus braxandi, the right to brew beer.
This was the foundation for an industrial
branch that would become one of the most
important for a long time to come. In their
heyday, the local breweries produced more
than 7.5 million hectolitres of this traditional
Dortmund beverage. Follow the footsteps of
Dortmund's major brewing tradition in the
Dortmund Brewery Museum (p. 19).
Perhaps a guided tour with beer tasting will
be offered while you're there!
Now you can choose from a smorgasbord of
options for your evening entertainment. You
might choose to review all that you've seen
during your Dortmund visit over a pleasant
dinner in one of the many restaurants
(p. 26/27). Perhaps you're more interested
in fun, games, and excitement at the Casino
Hohensyburg (p. 15)? There's also surely a jazz session taking place in domicil (p. 15)
or a typical regional cabaret in the Theater Olpketal (p. 16) or a concert from a great band
in the Freizeitzentrum West (p. 17). Dortmund’s club scene (p. 28/29) offers several
options for every preference. Of course, there's probably much more to choose from. Enjoy!

operas and concert halls, museums and galleries of international ranking, diverse leisure
activities, and an exciting nightlife. Naturally, you can't see everything during your first visit.
However, one should certainly venture beyond Dortmund's city limits. The attractions in

for you here. Come visit us again. There's still much more to do!

One of the city's most popular landmarks is now transformed by 20th and 21st century art,
research, education and media art into a unique innovation centre. Adolf Winkelmann's films
on the exterior façade as well as two additional installations by the renowned Dortmund film
artist in the U tower's foyer, the new presentation of the
Museum Ostwall collection, many special exhibitions and
events in and around the Dortmunder U document the
transformation of this former industrial city into a cultural

Theater Dortmund presents five different types of performances and now looks back on a tradition spanning 100 years. It has always ranked high among the theatre centres in the Ruhr region. With a range that includes opera, repertory theatre, children's and youth theatre, a new

of these municipal stages have an influence far beyond the borders of the city. Friends of classical as well as of modern repertory theatre can enjoy works suited to their tastes just as well as

INDUSTRIAL CULTURE
Hard work has always distinguished the Dortmunders and their city. Steel, beer, and
coal made Dortmund famous around the world. But today no miner can be found underground any more and the blast furnaces have closed down. Nevertheless, you can
still feel the presence of the past, since the famous production sites from former times
have new roles: they are simultaneously monuments, museums, and stages.
n
Zeche Zollern - The Zollern Colliery
This "mansion of labour" provides some of the most attractive evidence of the city's industrial
past. In 1968 the Zollern Colliery was shut down and only spared from demolition because of
its unusual architecture. The onion towers and gothic brickwork are impressive, as is the engine
house with its Art Nouveau doorway. The former mine is now the Museum for Industrial Culture
in Westphalia-Lippe. This is the place to discover how miners once lived between the pit and
their housing colonies.

Nowhere in Germany do as many people frequent football matches as in Dortmund. On
average, 75,000 attend the home games of the Borussia team. Of course, all 80,720 seats
are occupied when an interesting opponent is on the game plan. At the latest by that point
it becomes clear why the noble London Times named the Signal Iduna

Youthful flair in the Brückstraße district
Stroll along the Hellweg and Hansa route
Young people congregate near the Dortmund Concert House in the Brückstraße district.
The "Rue de Pommes Frites", as the Brückstraße was formerly locally known, has become
a modern downtown promenade for young people. This district evokes an alternative flair.
Here people under 25 can find almost everything - from rakish hairstyles to funky clothing
and trendy, individual accessories. All of this fits the motto "you can only find that on the
Brückstraße". www.brueckstrasse.info
No other downtown promenade draws as many pedestrians as the Westenhellweg. Together
with the Ostenhellweg, this old trade route flows through the Dortmund city centre like a pulsing artery. When Dortmund was still a member of the
Hanseatic League, waggons loaded with salt and silk rolled
through. As early as in the Middle Ages, the only free
imperial city in Westphalia was an important centre of
commerce and trade. Today as a shopping metropolis
in the eastern Ruhr region, Dortmund's centre on the
intersection of the former trade axes Hellweg and Hansalinie offers everything a shopper's heart desires.

new trend has emerged. Young and imaginative interpretations of popular Ruhrgebiet specialties
from Currywurst to Pfefferpotthast have been well-received by critical gourmets.

Dortmund always has a lot to offer in the way of culinary arts. This is even well documented
in a museum. The Westphalian metropolis is home to the German Cookbook Museum and
of course there's also a brewery museum here. Dortmund was Europe's number one beer
brewing city after all, and the local traditional drink is known
almost everywhere on earth. For this reason, every visitor to
the city should definitely try a glass of Dortmund beer. The
locals will be happy to socialise with you. Local specialties
like a "Salzkuchen mit Mett" should be your choise. This salt
and caraway seed-topped pastry roll with fresh ground pork
and onions is typical Dortmund fare, hardly known even in
neighbouring cities. The legendary "Pfefferpotthast" is also
great with beer. This peppery stew meat is usually served

hours of the morning will be spoilt for choice. Techno, house, hip-hop, black music,
reggae, dancehall, metal, rock and jazz - in Dortmund there are several options for every
taste. This variety makes the city a real experience.
It is not just since the Loveparade in 2008 that Dortmund has been one of Germany's
bastions of electronic music. The now world-famous Paul Kalkbrenner used to spin his vinyl
at a small club here, under the DJ name Ikarus. And it is not for nothing that the legendary
Westfalenhallen has been home to Mayday - the "mother of all raves" - for over 20 years.
Every year, the absolute stars of the national and international DJ scene flock here.
But it is not just on Mayday that ravers from Europe travel to Dortmund, but now also on
the weekend before German Unification Day. Because then the Syndicate take over and for
a night the Westfalenhalle becomes the hardest venue in Europe.

Many of the smaller clubs in Dortmund are located within the wall, the line of where the city
wall used to be, or in its immediate vicinity. Spread over almost the whole of the inner city, it is
usually only a short walk from one club to the next. It starts in the North, where there are wild
parties in an upmarket ambience, far from any kind of dress code. The sweat regularly drips
from the ceiling here, to the sound of electro, techno, house, indie and hip-hop. Moving south,
night owls inevitably stumble over a legendary stronghold of rock and metal, before they reach
the traditional centre of Dortmund's nightlife, the
Brückviertel. At the beginning of the last century,
it was already known as the best pleasure
district in the city. Now you can party to R n B,
soul, funk, vocal house, 70s, 80s, 90s classics
and salsa in an elegant and stylish party temple
or in rustic furnishings, with constantly changing
disco series and the widest variety of musical
styles. Directly in the centre of the city, the red
carpet gets rolled out now and again, because
occasionally a celeb is cavorting among the

FUN & ADVENTURE
Take the whole family on an outing to Dortmund - what a great idea! Even young
tourists can find a load of activities that are sure to please. What about travelling back
in time to the Ice Age? Perhaps a visit to Walter the orang-utan or Sandra, the giant
anteater? The largest tepee in the world is also surely a great destination. Even an extensive shopping stroll is fun for little ones, since there are many places to play and romp
directly in the pedestrian zone. In summer, the water games in Mönchenwordt
are especially popular - adults might want to keep their distance.
For an overview of Dortmund's attractions for families, you can find important information at www.dortmund.de/Familie. There you'll find tips for family-friendly restaurants,
sample excursions, breast-feeding areas in the downtown area, and much more.
Museums also offer family and children's programmes, which are described on the
respective websites. Have a look online before you visit!

Dortmund Zoo
From aardvarks to zebras, there are many happy residents at the zoo. Some 1,800 animals
belonging to 250 species live in this large park. If some of them weren't so rare, most of
them could be found in the wild in South America. One of the highlights is the Amazon
House, which amazes visitors with its three-storey tropical jungle. The activity stations in
the Dortmund Zoo are also very popular. Here young visitors can test whether they can
jump farther than a kangaroo or climb with the same agility as an Andean bear. There is,
of course, also a petting zoo.

Natural Science Museum
This museum allows you to undertake an exciting excursion
through millions of years of the earth's history. The visitors
encounter dinosaurs, a 55 million year-old prehistoric pony,
glittering crystals, 150,000 insects, thousands of sheets of
pressed plants, and a colourful array of topical, fresh-water fish
in one of the world's largest Amazon aquariums. In addition,
a demonstration mining shows how ore and minerals were
mined in past centuries. There are also continuous tours designed especially for children - interactive, of course.

mondo mio!
This children's museum in the Westfalenpark is a place where kids
can marvel, laugh, and think as well as touch, participate, and learn! It's a journey of discovery
through various cultures of the world. At the entrance, a gigantic globe welcomes visitors in
many different languages. You then enter the exhibition with your own passport. How do people
live on other continents? Unusual musical instruments can be played, and you can determine
how games are played in other countries as a world reporter. Turning the crank on a generator
produces energy and you can find out how solar cells work by creating little solar cars. Super
putty, a whisper tree, and toys made of recycled rubbish can also be found here.

Westphalian School Museum
Nobody who still goes to school will want to be reminded of it in their free time, others like
to think back on their student days, some are glad to have finally escaped the school bench on this trip through 500 years of school history, however, everyone has fun. One of the largest
collections of school furniture and paraphernalia from the 16th century to the present tells of
the joys and sorrows of learning, from pupil’s tricks and first loves. With family programmes such
as ”It Takes More Then The ABC”,
”Of Hobbyhorses, Wax Tablets and
Pfennigs” and ”Arithmetic is God’s
Gift - From the Abacus to the Computer” young and old discover
entirely new facets in the life of
the other.
