Hi everyone. I have really been enjoying
the wonderful spring weather we are having
here in central Arizona. You couldn't ask for
better riding weather than we've had the
first 3 months of 2014. I hope you have
been on your Harley a lot lately. I ride
every day to work. It makes the commute
much more enjoyable. I try to get on my
Harley at least once during the weekend.
Riding at least 6 days a week is pretty cool.
Our April meeting is coming up soon, on
Saturday, April 5th. Our meeting start time
changes to 9:00 AM starting in April, giving us more riding time after
the meeting. Our ride after the meeting in April will be down to the
inaugural Phoenix Bike Fest taking place at the Wild Horse Pass Casino
in Chandler. It is a collaborate effort of all the major Harley dealerships
in Arizona. It is a free event that should be a lot of fun. There will be
many vendors, concerts, demonstrations, and opportunities to eat, all
free, except the eating part. Sorry Rick. I hope you join us in riding
down to this first time event.

Next up is our HOGs-n-Dogs put on by Grand Canyon H-D and our
Yavapai AZ HOG chapter. It will be on Saturday, April 12th, from 11-2
pm. The turnout for the HOGs-n-Dogs the last several months has
been outstanding. After enjoying a free meal, we will be riding over to
Johnny Rockets Diner in Camp Verde for dessert. We had a great
turnout for our last dessert ride. You don't want to miss this one.

Yavapai AZ HOG Chapter 1271
Continued from page 1
Last month we rode down to the Salty Senorita Pub and
Restaurant in Peoria. We had never been there before, but our
new Activities Director, Timothy Logan suggested that we give
it a try. It was a lot of fun. The food and service were great.
Our first overnight trip of 2014 is coming up in a few weeks. It
is on Saturday & Sunday, April 26-27th. We are riding over to
Laughlin, NV, Saturday morning to have lunch, browse all the
vendors, and then we are heading up to Boulder City, Nevada,
where we will spend the night. Boulder City is about an hour
north of Laughlin. It is a neat little town with a lot to do and
see. If you've never been to Boulder City, you're in for a real
treat. You need to make reservations at the motel very soon.
We will be leaving for Laughlin and Boulder City at 8:00 AM.
Look for reservation instructions on this page at the bottom.
Our annual Progressive Brunch run is coming up on Saturday,
May 17th. This is always a favorite ride of the year. It is a full
day of riding and eating, the two things we love to do as a HOG
chapter. We have volunteers for the lunch and dessert stops,
but we still need someone to host the breakfast stop. The HOG
chapter picks up the cost of the meals, you just need to open
your home for the breakfast. A breakfast location in
Cottonwood or Sedona would be perfect, but Dewey or PV
would work fine also. If you're interested in hosting this
breakfast, please let Timothy Logan or myself know ASAP so
we can firm up plans for that fantastic day.
In June we have our annual Yavapai AZ HOG picnic. It is
always a lot of fun, and we also will be participating in the
Veteran's Appreciation Day at the dealership in Mayer. These
are just some of the rides and events we have scheduled in the
next few months. Come on out to our meeting on Saturday,
April 5th to hear the rest of the story. See you then.

From the Assistant Director
For those of you who didn't make
the March meeting, I'll reiterate the
H.O.T. Conference that your officers
attended in Las Vegas was fantastic.
Beyond being just being a good
time, with good food (I gained 3.6
pounds) and great friends, both old
and newly made, it was informative
and personally developing. This
would have served me well had I
received it earlier in life. I encourage
all members to run for a HOG office
just to have the opportunity to
attend the H.O.T. Conference. Just
don't run against me, as I really want to go again.
My wife, Donna has joined our chapter and went on two rides
in March. So right now just call her Two Feathers. I'm planning
an Iron Butt 50CC (Coast to Coast in 50 hours) ride at the end
of April. It will be from San Diego, CA to Jacksonville Beach, FL.
Donna will fly to Orlando where I'll pick her up so we can tour
home. I'll miss you all at the May meeting.
I believe we only need one more member to order a name tag
to send in the order. The minimum order is 12 name tags. So
now would be a good time to place your order and you won't
have so long a wait to receive it. So come to the April meeting
and get in your order.
Ride defensively,
Morgan

The HOG Manager
/Webmaster Message
Hi all! First off, I want to thank all who
are volunteering for HOGs-n-Dogs each
month. The turnout each month has
been awesome, and has been bringing
new members into our great riding
family! And we can't forget our Chef
Extraordinaire, Monty aka "Der
Weinermeister"! Our next HOGs-n-Dogs
is on Saturday, April 12th, so mark it on
the calendar!
I had a blast at the H.O.T. conference in Las Vegas. The number of
folks there, over 700, was exciting, and you gotta figure that over
100 chapters were represented. Not only did we get the
opportunity to take in the latest info and updates from HOG
National, we are able to sit, mingle, and share with officers from
other chapters across the US, even Alaska and Hawaii, getting ideas
to better help our chapter. I even got to meet up with a few folks
from the HOG chapter in my home town of Danbury, Connecticut!
UPDATE: Due to circumstances beyond our control, our Yavapai
HOG website had to be shut down. I am currently researching into
other options and this time, and will keep you all updated.
Meanwhile, our Yavapai AZ HOG Chapter Facebook page will
operate as our website, and can be accessed and read even if you
don't have a Facebook account. Ride safe, ride free!

Hi. Spring is officially here and weʼre heading
into April. Woohoo root beer floats cominʼ up!
Be sure to get yours at our HOGs-n-Dogs
outreach event on April 12th.
Please consider helping out at this yearʼs AZ
State HOG rally, scheduled for June 5 - 7.
To volunteer, contact Amy Townsley at
[email protected]. See page 10 for
more information. They only got two more
months to put the rally together, a massive undertaking requiring
lots of helping hands. The jackpot for our April meeting is $75.

The Secretary’s Report
March 8 2014 HOG chapter
meeting 10:00 am
The meeting started with
greeting new members and
guests.
Joe Dugan, for the
dealership, thanked the
chapter for the work and
involvement that has resulted in a lot of activities and rides that
we have done recently and have planned for the season.
Morgan reported on the Hog Officer Training in Las Vegas. Six
officers were able to attend and all reported that it was a very
informative and enjoyable experience.
Monty then introduced Nick from Team Arizona who presented
rider safety course with the focus being mainly on lane position
and stagger formation riding.
Activities director Tim went over the rides that are planned for
March and April.
Director Ken Johnson reminded members to recycle ride pins
and sign up for name tags.
The meeting ended with drawings for door prizes and 50/50
after that it was time for HOGs-n-Dogs, then the ride to Rock
Springs Cafe for dessert.

Safety Officer
/Road Captain Report
Hello everyone! New Year Resolutions are
usually eating better (dieting), more
exercise, more organized, etc. What’s your
riding resolution? Mine is to ride more. We
have the perfect almost year round riding
season. You don’t have to go far to have a
good ride. For me, sometimes it’s just an
18 mile ride to the dealership and back.
Although I sometimes take the long way
back (69 to 17 to 169) and why not, we live with the best riding roads
a place could have.
What if your goal this year is just to become a better rider? Where do
you do that and how? If you haven’t taken a Motorcycle Safety Street
Riding Skill class, try it (they provide the bike) or move up to the
Experienced Rider Course (on your own bike). Either one of these
qualifies you for HOG Dollars. That’s right. Take a class, turn in your
receipt and the course completion certificate to HOG National and you
will get a Gift Certificate to use at a dealership. You can also check
with your insurance company to see if they offer any credit toward
your insurance rates. If you were at the last meeting there was a
great presentation by Team Arizona Rider Safety, and there were
packets of information on the various courses they offer. Check them
out. Maybe if we can get enough interest and riders, they would give
us a group rate.
Is your goal to ride more with the chapter? Then make sure you check
out the listings in the newsletter. The events are listed for at least a
couple of months. Also as Joe Dugan develops our chapter website,
we hope to be able to post the rides on a calendar on that site as well.
Do you have an idea for a ride? Come to our next planning meeting
and give us some of your ideas. It doesn’t matter if it is a short ride
just for lunch or maybe you have an overnight trip you would like to
do. You are welcome to help us plan YOUR rides. You’ll be glad you
did as we are a fun bunch of folks.
So my thoughts for you, as your Head Road Captain/Safety
Officer, are very simple: First, develop a desire to ride and
have fun with your fellow HOG members. Second, check the
chapter ride calendars for locations and dates that work for
your schedule. Third, make the effort to show up. I said it
would be simple.

The Guessin’ Game
1. WHO am I?
Could honestly say my first bike was a Schwinn, but I don't think that's what you were after. This
is all going back more years than I want to think about, cause in my mind, I couldn't possibly be
that old, could I? First motorized bike was a well used, not sure of the year, but I think 61 Honda
90 that cost about $75. Turned it into a dirt bike complete with knobby tires. Only thing was, I
didn't raise the fenders. Darn thing had this habit of the front fender packing with mud, locking up
and causally flipping me over the handle bars. Being the inventive farm kid I was, just took the
front fender off. Worked great, except for all the mud you had to eat, and of course, there was no
helmet, and no eye protection. When I stop and think, it's a wonder kids like us ever survived to
become the old kids that we are. Say for sure, I would never do things like that today, along with
a lot of other things I did back then. It all goes with the saying, "We grow too soon old, and too
late smart" That's it, my first bike.
2. WHAT is it?
3. WHERE are we?
Think you know the answers?
E-mail your answer(s) to
“[email protected]”. Correct answers will
be entered into a drawing at the end of the
year. Answers must be received by the 25th
of the month to qualify for the drawing.
The fine print: One entree per person per
category per month. Family members of a
posted Who am I? are disqualified from
entering into the Who am I? category contest
for that particular month.
March Answers:
1. Howard Kerstine
2. Oil cooler (Kalani’s bike)
3. Motorcycle Graveyard, Rye, AZ
Wish to stump our members?
Submit your entry, either a paragraph on your
first bike for category 1 or a photo of a bike part
for category 2 or a photo of a location that
chapter members have visited for category 3, to
“[email protected]”. Correct answers must
be submitted with entry.
Members submitting entries for any of the
categories and which are published on the
Guessin’ Game page will likewise be entered
into the drawing at the end of the year.

ARIZONA STATE H.O.G. RALLY 2014
Editor’s Note:
The following article was taken from the Grand Canyon HOG
Chapter’s newsletter HOG-LOG, February/March 2014 edition.
“As many of you know, our Chapter is running the AZ State
H.O.G. Rally happening in Williams, AZ June 5-7. Hosting and
running a State Rally is a tremendous amount of work. We
have just nine people on the Rally Committee.
We Really Need Your HELP!
Please volunteer to help the Rally Committee make this year’s State H.O.G Rally a tremendously fun
and outstanding event of which we can all be proud. The nine of us cannot do it alone. We need the
kind support of our Chapter brothers and sisters.
We are currently asking for volunteers who can (among other things):
Help with approaching vendors for the Rally and getting them the proper forms.
Help with assembling Rally pre-registration participant packets—this includes gathering the various
branded items that pre-registrants will be issued, forms, coupon books, and other items,
making boxes, stacking boxes, etc.
Help with assembling Rally onsite registration participation packets—this includes the various
branded items that onsite registrants will be issued, forms, coupon books, and other items,
making boxes, stacking boxes, etc.
Help with on-site registration at the Rally— this includes verifying attendees’ H.O.G. membership
status, selling gear and collecting payments, signing people up for HOG National and Chapter
membership, manning the release forms table, provide Rally information, answering questions
on local spots of interest, etc.
Help with greeting Rally visitors and answering any questions event-goers might have.
Help with setting up tables, chairs, and other equipment at the Rally grounds.
Help with breaking down the set-up and picking up the grounds after the Rally.
Help with handing out Raffle items to winners.
Help with the field events and bike games.
Help with security tasks.
Help with parking control.
Please consider jumping in and assisting your committee
peeps for one or all of the days. We schedule everyone
in shifts so you are not doing the same job for hours on
end. You’ll get to have some fun, too and all Rally
volunteers will get a special treat.
Need More Information? Contact Amy Townsley, Rally
Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected], to ask
how you can help, or, boogey on over to the Rally Volunteer
Web Site at http://www.azstatehogrally.com/”

A Bit of GCH-D History
In 2002, Kyle Rose was tooling
around the Valley of the Sun on his
Road King as a member of the East
Valley HOG Chapter in Mesa,
dreaming one day of owning his
own Harley-Davidson dealership.
He was about to get an offer that
would change his life and make his
dreams come true. His mother and
step-dad, Beverly and Dick
Doughton were willing to set Kyle
up with his own business. The only
question was what kind of business
did Kyle want? The reply was quick:
A Harley-Davidson dealership. it
was up to Kyle to find one for sale.
Kyle mentioned his quest to a riding
buddy who was affiliated with the
Harley-Davidson dealership in
Bellemont, AZ. As it turned out, the
dealership was for sale, having
recently been put on the market.
Twenty-four hours later, Kyle came
to his parents with the paperwork to
purchase the Bellemont HarleyDavidson dealership.
The Bellemont dealership came with
an extra caveat: a second location
that was still in the development
stages. It just required completion
of its construction. This second
location was along the AZ SR 69
corridor in a sleepy town called
Mayer about 50 miles or so, as the
crow flies, south of the store in
Bellemont. In April, 2002, the new
owners opened the Mayer store of
their Grand Canyon Harley-Davidson
dealership. Like the Bellemont
store, the Mayer store is also a full
service dealership. 2002 was a very
good year for Kyle Rose.
Happy 12th birthday GCH-D Mayer!
