Chapter 1271 January, 2016 Volume15, Issue 1 Sponsored by: Grand Canyon Harley-Davidson 10434 Highway 69 Mayer, AZ 86333 928-632-4009 Toll free: 1-877-888-GCHD(4243) The Director's Message Hi all! Hoping everyone had a great Christmas and New Year! I am excited to be your Director for 2016, and am looking forward to a LOT of new and exciting events and rides! HOG's motto is "Ride & Have Fun", and we are certainly going to take that to the next level. I want to thank all of you who served as Chapter Officers for 2015, and those who stepped up for 2016. I think we have a winning team. This month we have the Hangover ride, formerly Frosty Balls, on January the first, followed by Hogs-'n-dogs on January 9th. Our February meeting, on Saturday, February 6th, will also be our Activities meeting, so if you have ideas and want to be heard, be sure to attend! Also keep in mind our monthly Dine Out Nights on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Attendance had been low for the last few months, but our last one at Leff-T's was better attended. We will be choosing some new locations to dine at, and hope to see more of you there! We will keep you posted on major happenings through this year, including Arizona Bike Week in April, the California HOG Rolling Rally in September, which is coming through Bellemont, and our own Arizona HOG Rally in Sierra Vista in September. Let's ride and have fun! Psycho Joe Dugan Director/HOG Mgr. Table of Contents Director Chapter info Asst. We were both very active with the H.O.G. chapter in our previous home town as I was the Treasurer in that Chapter, and found the involvement to be fun and very rewarding. I started riding when I was 14 years old, but gave up the bikes when my first child was born because I couldn't afford both, so all the money went to family. As soon as our middle child graduated college, and our youngest went off to start college, I went out and bought my next bike, which was my first in about 25 years, and started riding again. I've since traded that one in for the 2014 Ultra Limited that I'm riding now. I look forward to getting to know the members of this chapter, and hope I'm able to contribute in a positive manner. Mike McKibben 913-638-2974 [email protected] Secretary's Report In 1996, I retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service. Throughout my military service stationed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia Beach, NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, Recruit Training Command, San Diego, and NAS North Island, San Diego, I enjoyed the camaraderie and leadership responsibilities bestowed upon me. Deployments to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, North Atlantic region, and many countries in Asia, allowed me to greatly this great nation of ours. HOG chapters reflect the patriotism and love we have for our flag. So, thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as Secretary of the Yavapai AZ HOG Chapter 1271. I will strive to be proficient. For those new to the club: Welcome. As your editor for this year's HOGwash, I'd be remiss not to tell you the publication parameters. While I seek your stories for this chapter's newsletter, I can not nor will not publish any submission that deals with politics or religion. Charter By-Laws forbids it. Likewise, no foul, lewd, crude, sexually-charged, nor hateful, demeaning or degrading language will be published. No name calling or personal attacks. We are strictly a PG kind of newsletter. I'm seeking articles from members, two or ten paragraphs long. This year, I'll be running a new column entitled “Road Names.” Do you have one? How did you get it? What does it mean? Inquiring minds want to know. Don't have a road name yet? Can you send me an article with a pic or two about your latest road trip, the one you took by yourself or with others? Where did you go? What route did you take? Any good restaurants on the way? “YAZHOGs on the road” is the name for that column about you ridin' on your Harley. Letters to the Editor are always appreciated. Just remember our PG standards. Talking about ridin', With Lizz Casey, I'll be organizing a trip to the Mongollon range. We are calling it “May Day on the Mongollon.” We'll leave Saturday, April 30 th and return on Sunday, May1. This overnighter is a joined effort between us and our sister chapter, Grand Canyon HOG, out of Bellemont. We'll meet up with them at the 260 – 87 junction, then to Pine for lunch and to Showlow for the night. Join us. Andy and I became YAZHOGs in 2009. We've thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I've served the chapter as historian and photographer. This will be my fourth year as editor. I've had the honor to be part of Ladies of Harley (LOH). Looking forward to seeing you on the road. Be safe out there! Marijke [email protected] Calendar Yavapai AZ H.O.G. I've now been riding for 50 years and have owned 24 motorcycles, only the last two have been Harleys. I got my first Harley the end of June 2012 and traded for my second the first of May 2015. I put 60,000 on the first Road King and have 14,000 on the current one. I said after getting my first Harley that I no longer ride like I did when 17 but I'm having as much if not more fun as I did then. The new 2015 Road King has been even more fun. I'm planning an Iron Butt Coast to Coast to Coast in under 100 hours ride for the end of March or the first of April 2016. I plan to continue the ride from San Diego home to hopefully also get my 5,000 miles in 5 days pin. I wear a Spot GEO Tracker and will post a link to a public website were my progress can be tracked in real time.. Photographer Happy Birthday! You get 10% off all purchases you make at GCH-D during your birthday month. NOTICE For every chapter ride, you must be at the meet up location 15 minutes prior to the KSU for a safety meeting. No exceptions! February Jackpot: $50 Article submission deadline is the 25th of the month, every month. Photo of the month My name is Wayne Schwetje and this is my second year as the club Photographer. The first sixty four years of my life was spent in New Jersey. Of that I spent forty four years as a Foreman with Sprinkler Fitters Local 696. Fresh out of high school I joined the Navy SeaBee’s and off to Vietnam I went. I met my wife Jeanie, some twenty years ago, who introduced me to the life of Harley-Davidson. With her behind me in more ways than one, I got my first motorcycle at the age of fifty five and found my second love. I was a member of Northwest Jersey HOG and held offices as Safety, Assistant Director, Director and NJ State Rally Events Coordinator. I retired from my job on Oct 9 th, 2012 and then moved to Sedona, AZ, on Oct 21st. Since we knew no one out here, we just joined Yavapai HOG and have all the friends any one would need. Remember to smile when you see me, with or without the camera. Ladies restroom entrance Roadhouse Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. Photo by Marijke Ride Safe, Wayne Schwetje 7 Webmaster's Memo I jumped on my first Harley in 1964 after spending almost a year on my third bike, a 1963 Honda Superhawk. Ever since there have been many bikes, depending on my life situation and cash flow; but they have all been Harleys, ranging from a 1959 hard-tail Sportster, up through a 1973 Superglide chopper and on to the 2011 Ultra I am riding now. I am a native Californian and have traveled a lot, having gotten to 49 of the states and riding in nearly all of them. But the best part of my life began on January 1, 2012, when I moved to Arizona to be with and marry the lady I met through the Black Sheep ministry. I am looking forward to many more miles and many rides with Yavapai HOG, praising God for each day He provides. Todd Carter Activities Officer's Message Thank you again for your vote of confidence. I am going into my third year with Yavapai AZ HOG and second year as Activities Officer. I couldn't be more excited. There are already a lot of rides and events on the calendar for 2016. I see a stellar riding year ahead of us! For those who don't know me: I am the General Manager of the host dealership, Grand Canyon H-D shop in Mayer, AZ. I am also the adopted dad of Zeus, the shop dog! I came with a very long history in the motorcycle industry. I started selling Hondas in 1983 in Mesa and have been avidly in the sport since then. I owned my own independent dealership for 15 years, also in Mesa, before moving up to slow down a little. Oh well, we know how that worked out! I work with Joe Dugan hand in hand at the dealership to make sure the Grand Canyon family of dealerships have activities happening throughout the year. So, it makes sense, at least to me, to be the Activities Officer for our chapter. Please let me know if you have a “BEST” ride that you have done and we will see if we can make it happen again for the entire chapter. I'm your Safety/Road Captain for 2016. This is my second year with Yavapai HOG. I have been an officer in a HOG chapter in Washington State. I have been riding a variety of motorcycles over the last 50 plus years. I am very experienced in group riding. This is one of the main things we need to improve on. I have seen how other HOG chapters operate and how our chapter works. I have been to HOT to see how things work. We do need to make some changes and I will work with Joe to make our chapter better. We all need to work together to make these changes go smoothly. I am always open to discuss things we are doing. Thank you. Ron Matthews March 12 AMSAF ride KSU: 9:30 am 19 Bike Blessing R O A D N A M E S My road name is “Beabob.” I got it when I joined Bikers Against Child Abuse. It was required to have one, so I could either choose one for myself or be given one by whomever. I chose one for me. Beabob stands for “BE A Babe On Back.” Of course the middle “B” could stand for other things, but I'll never tell. Marijke 10 2016 ADVERTISEMENT PRICE LIST Ads must be camera ready.
