You rock! I know some girls in our chapter that can really ride, and I enjoy seeing new riders (both women and men) join us in our quest to “Ride and Have Fun” on our HarleyDavidsons. When our paths cross with a newer rider, you may influence them in ways you may not think about. Did you ask em if they might like to go for a ride? How about simply telling them how cool their new Harley is? Or, asking them where they dream of riding to someday? I spoke with a couple of old friends this week that did this for me when I first showed up at Rose City. They are the ones I blame for my grass not getting mowed, cause I’m out riding! Hang in people! Soon we will have a string of 3 nice days in a row! Till then . . . I’m riding in the rain! Gregg Sponsored by: Latus Motors Harley-Davidson 870 E. Berkeley Street, Gladstone, OR 97027 Phone: (503) 249-8653 Fax: (503) 249-3849 / online: www.latus-hd.com May 2011 Page 3 IT’S A PIZZA PIE TIME! By Rick Loewen and Carmen Weakland Wednesday evening, April 13, found us dodging rain and hail while 17 of us made our way to the FLYING PIE PIZZA restaurant in Gresham for a chapter social adventure. Of the 17 who turned out for some fun, one lone rider Harleyed on into dinner – Bill! He was met by the lovely Tiffany, who arrived in her car – she drove over from work. Take a look at the size of those pizzas! No one left hungry and the hit ingredient of the evening seemed to be that Italian sausage Flying Pie is so famous for! Debbie and Wes (Mr. Debbie) won the award for distance most traveled to arrive at dinner! Thank you to everyone for taking the time to join the fun. For those of you who missed the event, we’ll catch you next time! Page 4 Page A Rose City HOG Mel’s Parkdale Ride By: Jerry Stanley After months of gray cloudy days with rain we got a nice sunny day. Chris Schenk’s team all had big smiles on their faces as riders started arriving at Latus Motors for our annual ride to the Parkdale Grange for lunch. This event celebrates Hood River’s Apple Blossom Festival. Shortly after we arrived at Latus Motors I was quick to get in line to sign-in and buy a few 50/50 tickets. As I looked around the parking lot I saw a number of people standing around a huge log that had been sculptured into a Harley Davidson Sportster with a chain-saw. It looked to me that it was full size scale model. A lot more people were showing up now and it wouldn’t be long before the group ride meeting. Today’s journey to Parkdale would be lead by Mel Davidson (Road Captain) with his wife Jeannie riding in second slot, George MacGillis (Road Captain & Safety Officer) would be riding in the group and Loren Charlton (Road Captain) riding drag. In the second group would follow about ten minutes later and would be lead by Paul Wickersham (Road Captain) along with Ron Mariani (Road Captain) ridding drag. About ten o’clock the first group started off from Latus Motors heading north to Washington. Just after crossing the Columbia River Bridge we headed east on HWY-14 towards Camas. This area was first inhabited by the Chinookan Cascade Indians, who suffered from disease and displacement after the arrival of Euro-Americans. Investors established Camas as an industrial town when they built a paper mill in 1883. The mill has remained the town’s main employer ever since. As we rode past Camas I couldn’t help but think about all the historical sites and beautiful views of the Columbia River Basin that lay ahead for us to see. We passed right by Beacon Rock before arriving at North Bonneville, our first fuel and rest stop. “Beacon Rock” was originally named by Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the Pacific Ocean on October 31, 1805. It was near Beacon Rock that they first measured tidal influences from the ocean on the Columbia River. The Beacon rock is very large and impressive to see and provides an awesome view with the Columbia River flowing by. It wasn’t long before we rode into North Bonneville. The second group would arrive in about ten minutes. After taking a little break it was time to take a group picture. Thanks to Tom Matthis (Team Photographer) for taking this picture, I know it was a lot of work getting everyone together for this photo. The shot was well done and the Rose City Banner said it all. “Great” job Tom. Karen and I did not stay very long; we left ahead of everyone heading for the Bridge Of The Gods. After crossing the bridge we pre-paid the toll for (58 Motorcycles both groups) to cross the bridge. Then I got right in front of the toll booth with my camera waiting for the bikes to come so I could take pictures. Here’s a little trivia about the “Bridge Of The Gods”. After Charles Lindbergh’s May 2011 transatlantic flight in 1927, the Hood River community began talking about the need for an airport. Later that year, Lindbergh flew east up the Columbia River Gorge from Portland in his famed Spirit of St. Louis, passed low over the newly built “Bridge of the Gods”, then banked around and flew under the bridge before returning to Portland. From Cascade Locks we headed east towards Hood River paralleling Columbia River Highway Frontage road for few miles before merging onto Hwy-84. We took the first entrance to Hood River and road the back roads to Parkdale Grange. The field in front of the Grange was a little to wet for the motorcycles to park safely. Most everyone parked across the street. This made a nice long line of bikes on the side of the road that was most impressive to see. Parkdale is the end of the line for the Hood River Railroad and its 21 miles of track. The line was sold in 2008 to Permian Basin Railways a subsidiary of Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings. Today the railroad offers four-hour scenic tours through the Hood River Valley and narrated historic excursion train tours, as well as special events. There are views of Mount Hood and Mount Adams along with the surrounding orchards and farmland of the Hood River Valley. Everyone in Parkdale including the passengers on the train enjoyed the arrival of the Rose City HOG Chapter visit to the community. The Parkdale Grange always has a warm welcome for us. I know they look forward to seeing us each time we come to support their community event. They make sure there is lots of good food along with all types of awesome desserts to choose from. I could tell everyone had a great time by all the chit chat that I was hearing a long with the huge smiles on their faces. Before you leave Parkdale you might want to take time to visit the Jesse and Winifred Hutson Museum in Parkdale. It features American Indian artifacts, a collection of rocks, and items related to the early settlers and history of the area. It’s located next to the train station. If you visit make sure to take a look at sculpture of the little girl with the Clydesdale horse outside right next to the train tracks. This is a full size sculpture and if you look close you will see it’s all made out of barbwire. It’s absolutely fantastic peace of art and if you haven’t seen it I recommend you do. We had three Photographers on the ride: Tom Matthis, Russ Newell and myself and if you would like to see more pictures of Mel’s Parkdale Ride please go to the Rose City Hog Chapter web sight: http://www.rosecityhog.com/ and click on Photo Gallery. A “Big Thank You” to Mel Davidson (Road Captain) for all the work he did putting this ride together and making sure everyone had a safe ride to the Parkdale Grange. Mel You did an outstanding job. “Thank You” to all the other Road Captains that made this event possible. It was a great execution of team work. If you would like to have a great adventure, then go on one of the Rose City HOG Chapter rides. Most of our rides are open rides and you do not need to be a member to come and have a wonderful time riding with us. For information on future rides see our event calendar on our web site: http://www.rosecityhog. com/ Hope to see you on our next event were everyone has a great time. Enjoy the adventure life has given you. Don’t forget us!! May 2011 Page 11 A Day at the Races by Sherri Burns The day dawned crisp and clear, meaning that I had better dress warmly for the ride from my house in Eagle Creek to Latus Motors. Today’s ride was headed out to PIR (Portland International Raceway) to enjoy the OMRRA Sport Bike Races. Even though it wasn’t necessary, I rode in early so I could accompany my husband as he was going to work. Patrick works in Sales at Latus. Since it was early on a Saturday, we pretty much had the road to ourselves. (smile) Once we got to Latus, we realized it was going to be a busy day, since people were already showing up. Must be delayed Spring Fever. (hah) I finally had a chance to see that really cool Redwood Sportster model 48 1200 that Jordan made with his chainsaw. He did a really neat job. John Clark and his team started to arrive and we began to sign up for the 50 mile or so ride they had planned. From my view, it looks like at least 30 bikes came. I had invited one of my co-workers, Marc Wilson, to go, and he showed up riding his first ever motorcycle, a 1982 Honda 750. This was his first group ride. He was pretty stoked because he finally had a rusty tank problem fixed, and he was going to get his first real shot at how his bike would really perform. A day of firsts for Marc. Well, 9:30 rolled around and……my Sporty wouldn’t start, aaagh!! So while everyone waited (how embarrassing) some of the sales team members from Latus pit crewed me onto an XR1200X. OMG! Great, now I had to learn to ride a completely different bike, right on the spot. I sure hoped I wouldn’t screw up. Carmen reassured me that I would do OK if I just relaxed and found my happy place. It is just nuts how fast some things happen and the next thing I knew, I was joining the rest of the group with my friend and heading out on that beast of a Sporty. John took us out Hwy 224 through Carver and along the Clackamas. The sky was so blue, and even though it was still a little cool, you could already feel the warmth of the day. We turned up Amsig g er Page 12 Rose City HOG CHUCK BANISTER - -PAST ASSIST. DIR RCHOG JOHN MARSHALL PAST SR. May 2011 Rd and went through Boring, then we headed down 282nd and buzzed through Orient to Troutdale, and from there we got onto Marine Drive. We had a bit of tricky riding to get through all the lights, but pretty soon the group was all back together again. Marine Drive wasn’t too busy, but lots of folks were stirring about. Biking, hiking and in-line skating. The turn off to Delta Park came way too soon, but at least we got to see some jets take off as we passed by PDX. We cruised into PIR and it looked like there was lots of canned food donated. A gentleman from OMRRA met us to talk about the “parade lap”. He explained track etiquette – yellow flags mean caution, read means stop, white means go and of course, the checked flag and what the rules were for our 5laps would be. No speeds above 80 mph (ha ha) and watch out for the curves. The parade laps occurred at 11:45 during a “track crossing” period between races. We lined up at the starting line, and boy, was that track sticky. I never stood on a track before, and I learned that all race tracks are like that so the tires will stick better. Then the flag waved, and we were off. Director Gregg Lindsey led off the pack, followed closely by Vern Henderson and Marc Gibson. I was farther back, suffering from “iffy going” on an unfamiliar steed. After 2 rather wobbly first laps, I started to get the hang of that XR120X and those last 3 laps were AWESOME. Those folks back at Harley-Davidson really knew what they were going when they created that bike. It was light and responsive and the center of gravity was perfect. And Holy Cow, when you lay on the throttle, hold on! The gearing is quick and concise and it’s a good thing those Brembo brakes work so great. This motorcycle made me feel like a pro! The parade laps went by way too fast, but I sure had a great time. Mark Schadewitz and Mike Olsen were taking photos of the races and parade laps, wonder what they thought when they realized it was me on that XR1200X? It was nice and warm, and I really enjoyed cruising around in the race pits and talking to the racers. I discovered that 2 Chapter members I had not seen in a while, John Marshall and Chuck Bannister were racers and they were there. John had a bit of a “dust-up” during a race and Schad got some amazing photos of it, and didn’t realize it was John until after it was all over. Chuck is really something else out there too. I met some of the Latus Racing Team, Joe Kopp and Chase McFarland and got to talk shop about the new XR1200X. They seem to really like the bike, and seeing the racing bikes up close is pretty cool. The Latus Team did very well in the races and I will never forget the sights and sounds of the being out at the track that day. Page 13 Page APage 14 Rose City HOG From the LOH Desk of Terrie Marshall Yippee . . . I hear sun is in the forecast! Finally we can get on our motorcycles and get some of that “Ride and have Fun” May is celebrated as Womens Rider Month, and Rose City HOG has a large group of women riders. We have two ladies who are road captains, Dorice Rice and Carmen Weakland. Just think even 20 years ago there were not a lot of women riding . . . just the super adventurous ones! The programs like Latus Motors Ladies only Garage Parties . . . which Harley Davidson Dealerships all over the US holds are a great way of getting more ladies on their dream motorcycle and finding the freedom of the wind in their hair!! Saturday April 23rd we Rose City HOG’s got to do 5 laps at PIR in between the OMRRA races...I’m telling you that was the most exhilarating experience!! I know Lori Karssen, Lauren Gill, Laura Lindsey, Jenni Cramer, and I’m sorry if I missed any other gals, but I was moving pretty FAST! I’m already looking forward to next years ride! So all you gals that are still dreaming about riding your own motorcycle “GET IT” and those of us who do ride...have a GREAT, LADIES RIDING MONTH!! Cya on the road, May Birthdays Bill Slonecker Dan Pech Mike Ebers Scott Hancock David Karich Douglas Robinson Cathy Torgerson Britt Cavett Gary Morgan John Reynolds Tom Matthis Debrah Barr Tim Doty Treasurers Report By Marc Gibson Rose City HOG Treasurer Rose City HOG chapter is still running in the black and were doing better than ever before at this time of year. You may ask why is that, well it’s because of you the membership and your help. Our chapter has been very supportive and involved in the Chapters 50/50 at rides and at the chapter meeting. After the chapter’s yearly Poker Run the only funds that the chapter receives through the remaining year is through our 50/50 sales. Without all of you who purchase 50/50 tickets we would not be in the shape we are in, so a great big thank you to all of you who support your chapter. Those who win a 50/50 pot are pretty happy to, been a lot of smiles and happy faces. At the April meeting Loren Charlton won the big pot of $205.00. I know he was very excited and couldn’t believe his luck. Thanks for your support Loren. Sense it was Easter the weekend before we decided to do a egg thing. No, no real eggs but a special egg with a ticket inside it. With the help of Terrie and Tiffany, the eggs were loaded with some candy and a special ticket. I picked up some special prizes for the egg fun and ticket drawing. All had fun and we even had signs to prompt those in the audience when to laugh. All I can say is we had fun and that is what we all want to do is have fun. I think Gregg is doing a super job in putting fun into the meetings. See you all at the next ride, lets all do some begging for a bit of sun.
