CHAPTER 4590
Director’s Ramblings
By
Dave “Doc” Medich
IV Hoggers,
After a shaky start to riding season, the
weather lately has been great. I know there has
been extreme heat but that beats the rain.
The past month has been extremely busy with
all of the events planned and looking for a new
clubhouse. Due to our continued growth we have
outgrown the Sellersville Legion. In addition to
space issues we have heard your comments and
are now acting to insure we have a club house that
can sustain our growth and make it a safe environment when leaving the parking lots for the meeting rides. I am sure all of you will agree that rides
leaving the Legion have been a bit frustrating: not
only with the limited parking spaces but the traffic
route as well. Therefore, our August meeting will
be held at the Sellersville Moose.
After last meeting many of you drove down
with the Board to take a peek at the proposed location. What we found was amazing: a large enough
clubhouse to fit 225 folks; an outdoor picnic
ground that includes a large pavilion that can seat
a lot of folks and an outdoor speaker system, volleyball court (for the physical fitness buffs) and,
get this, an outdoor air conditioned bathroom!
Amazing stuff.
You will decide if we stay or continue to look
for another home. Before the end of the August
meeting, a show of hands will tell us our destiny.
A special thanks to Chris Corey for some great
investigative work.
Now let’s talk about some of the recent
events. The 65th Anniversary open house at Deans
was great. Thanks to the members who volunteered and the staff at Deans. The day’s events
went off without a hitch. The traffic was steady all
day and, in my opinion, the busiest open house I
ever saw at Deans. Thanks to Bud and Randy for
providing the great tasting food and hospitality.
We had our Poker Run on July 8th and it was
another memorable poker run and pig roast. Some
of you helped the day before in extreme heat to set
up at the German Hungarian club. At least we did
get a much cooler day for the event. I believe Saturday hit 103 and the day of the Poker run was 92.
Sure you will agree the 10 degrees did make a
difference. Although we had solid attendance,
turnout of IV HOG members was disappointing.
Based on the data the volunteers kept during sign
in, we had a total of 69 IV HOG members attend.
That’s just over 20% of the membership. And, this
number included over 20 volunteers that helped
both Saturday and Sunday. What is it going to
take to get more of you to support club events?
Members need to understand one thing: the
Poker Run/Pig Roast is our annual fundraising
event where all profits go to our chapter. That
money is used to fund other things such as the
Christmas party, donation to Manna and to keep
our annual dues at $15.00. We had many other
clubs and independents come out in support or our
event. Bucks County HOG alone brought 26
members. In the future, we have to reciprocate.
Participation and volunteerism are important
to our success. Participation is defined as –“the
act of taking part or sharing in something”. Volunteerism is generally considered an altruistic activity, intended to promote good or improve quality of life. It is serving the society through one’s
own interest, personal skills or learning and this in
return produces a feeling of self-worth and selfrespect. Volunteering contributes to skill development, socialization and to just having fun. It is
also a way to make contacts which can be valuable
for a variety of reasons. So, not only do you contribute to a larger cause, you help yourself too.
Let’s all get involved…..
Later, Doc

JULY 2012
Why I Ride
By
Randy Ziegler
At 55 years old I can say that no one thing has
defined my life more than motorcycling. I have
been riding for over 42 years and from the time I
started I have never been without a bike.
When I was nine
years old my Dad died
and Mom went to work
to support us. My
grandfather lived next
to us and kept an eye
on me while Mom
worked. He helped me
build a go-cart out of
an antique wooden
ironing board and some wheels Dad had in the basement. It wasn't long before I took the engine off the
family lawn mower and mounted it on that go cart.
I don't know if Mom didn't want to explain how her
son got hurt in a high speed ironing board accident
or if she just wanted the lawn mowed again, but she
decided it was time to help me get a mini bike.
In 1969 the back allies of Lansdale were full of
kids riding mini bikes. A police officer that was
probably tired of chasing us decided to organize the
Lansdale mini bike club and a track was built near
the sewer plant on Moyer Rd.
By the time I was thirteen I got my first real motorcycle, a 50cc Suzuki dirt bike. Every day when I
got out of school I would push my bike across town
to the track and ride until I ran out of gas. The years
of riding in the dirt prior to turning sixteen made
passing my motorcycle test easier than passing my
car test. So, with my new license in hand, I purchased my first real
street bike A 1972
GT380 Suzuki. My
friend Steve had
just purchased a
350 Kawasaki.
Steve and I spent
the next several
years trying to outdo each other with
faster and faster
bikes. But time
moved on and Steve moved away and riding for the
PAGE 5
adrenaline rush got replaced by riding for the pleasure of it.
One of the things I
like about motorcycling
is it's a constant learning experience. One of
those lessons came
along when I bought a
1966 triumph hard tail
chopper in 1974. I
quickly learned motorcycles should have shocks, I also learned why they
call the British Lucas electrical system the “Prince
of Darkness”. But most of all after driving home
one night, holding the headlight in with my left
hand and holding the muffler on with my right foot,
why someone
invented locktite. I quickly
returned to the
Suzuki brand
until I bought
my 1989 Softail
Custom, the first
in a long line of
Harley's to follow.
I was a truck and heavy equipment mechanic for
thirteen years when I herniated two discs in my
back and had to look for lighter work. I had no idea
that the thing that had been my passion since I was a
kid was about to become my profession for the next
twenty plus years.
I was in Dean's Harley-Davidson getting parts
for my 1989 Softail and asked Bud if he need another mechanic. I explained I needed lighter work
than what I had been doing and he offered me a job
in sales. Sales? I wasn't a salesman; I hate salesmen. Fortunately none of that actually came out of
my mouth. I told Bud I would start in a week.
I spent the next week convincing myself I could
do this. I liked the product so I could sell something I believed in. I thought about the two brothers
that sold me my Suzuki's for years, Jim and Ed Varnes. They were just motorcycle people: no high
pressure, no bull. They sold bikes because they
loved them. Yeah, I could be that kind of salesmen.
JULY 2012
Why I Ride
By
The first year I worked for Bud we were sold
out of bikes three months in advance. By 1999 we
were sold out two years in advance and had just
finished an expansion of the
Souderton
store. Wow,
this selling
thing was easy.
But 1999 was
pretty much the
end of easy.
My Mom had just passed away and I had to settle
her estate. I was now the manager of Dean's and
Harley was pushing for us to move to a bigger
store. The best thing to come out of that time was
my boys started riding dirt bikes with me.
We spent
years trail riding
and riding tracks
together as they
graduated from
little starter
bikes to full
sized trail and
motocross bikes
and the Harley's they ride today. It’s no wonder
they decided to work in the motorcycle industry.
The surprise is they decided to work for me. My
Sons
Scott and
Barry
and my
wife
Janet are
part of
what
makes
Dean's
what it is
PAGE 6
today: a place for riders, and those that aspire to
be.
So after all this time and all those miles the
answer to why I ride is as simple as: because I
started. But the reason I kept riding is that I love
the feeling. I trail ride to unwind. I race to challenge and better myself. And, I ride on the street
to enjoy the journey. Riding gives me a common
ground to relate to my friends, family and customers but also gives me a chance to disappear into
my own little world and be alone.

State of Business – Bike Illuminators
As a member of IV HOG for 7 years now, we wanted
to share this information with the club first. As of January 2012, Bike Illuminators is currently on hiatus. I have
been dealing with numerous medical limitations that have kept me from actively supporting the business for
the last 5 + months now. We are in search of a possible buyer for the business and would like to keep it in the
local area if possible. We do have some inventory in stock so if anyone has been on the fence about adding
lights now is a good time to reach out to us. We have kits in many different colors and they will be sold below
retail pricing. We also have some other items such as Brake Lights, Flex Arrays and Turn Signal Clusters.
Over the coming weeks/months we will be looking to sell the Business which will include the current inventory along with the domains and Name. We have enjoyed every bike we have lit up to make it a bit safer and
want to thank IV HOG for all the support over the years. If anyone is interested in any items please feel free to
contact us at [email protected] or you can call 215-510-5245 and leave a message. I still plan to be a part of
IV HOG and to attend the local events now as a spectator not as a vendor.
Thanks Again,
Nick Lamelza, Bike Illuminators
