I thank you for your help to keep this a good club and to make it better for all of us. We are moving into riding season and the weather is trying to tell us it is time to ride. I am really excited about our up coming rides, I hope each of you plan to enjoy being with us on every ride and at every event, to share in the fun I know we will have. We will, at our next officers meeting rate all of our rides, so all riders will know what to expect before they leave to go on a ride. This will help each of you to choose what rides will be best for you and what rides are within your ability. As this letter is being sent out, your officers will be in training, learning ways to make our club to be better and more fun. I am really looking forward to the ride to Orlando, I know this will be fun and I will report back to you in our next news letter on the success and fun we had. I truly believe, because of what know and because of how I feel, we at the end of this year, will be calling this club the fun loving, riding, Wild Hogs of North Carolina. It's all about the ride, the fun, the friends, and the experience, that some of us may never have again. Ride safe, have fun and thank you for allowing me to be your Director. Jim Gardner From your Secretary: Patti Grove Minutes – April 2009 Meeting The Statesville H.O.G. met Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Tilley Harley-Davidson for the monthly meeting with Jim Gardner, Director, presiding. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. with 32 members and 2 guests present. A prayer was offered by Craig Liverman and Jim asked the Dave Grove to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Officer Reports: Membership: We had 160 members as of the meeting. Director: Jim Gardner explained that at the beginning of the year, the officers set goals regarding strengthening relations with the sponsoring dealership, and building rapport amongst the officers and the membership. The officers feel that we have met those goals. Activities: Mark and Tommie reported that a great time was had by all at the Cannonball Poker Run. The best hand was won by Bree Parker, and the worst hand by Andy Romano. Everyone took home at least a small door prize. Mark had a safety video that was given away to Gene Combs. The calendar is getting firmed up with dates for rides and events. Tommie reported that she has talked with Lisa Metcalf of the Salisbury Chapter and they are interested in partnering with us (cost & work) for the low country boil. Charities: Cindy reported that the MDA Poker Run will be June 27th. We don’t have a firm date yet for the Victory Junction Camp ride. The results of the drawings for prizes were: Stanley Setzer won the 50/50 drawing. There was no winner in the birthday drawing. Door prizes were won by Herbert Smit and Don Henderson. The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 with a short prayer by Craig Liverman. The planned ride to Pirates Landing was cancelled due to rain. Membership - A reminder on membership rules – guests are only supposed to attend one chapter event per year. This means that if your spouse/significant other have not joined the chapter, you can’t bring them to all events. We would love to have them – at the events and as members. Membership is simple – first they need to join the national HOG organization, either as a full member if they ride their own Harley, or an associate member if they are your navigator or ride another make of bike. This can be done online or by mail. When they have their national HOG number, they can join our chapter. If you haven’t gotten your membership card, check at the front desk in Tilley’s. ($25 to each) My name is John Horan. I am a neighbor of Dave and Patti Grove. I can be reached on my cell at (973)934-2684 or home (704)663-3536. Let’s work together to protect the ones we love. Note from Dave Grove: I recently purchased a new security system from John and ISI Alarms. I was able to upgrade my previous alarm to a more modern "cell back-up" system for less $ then my previous provider would have charged. I found the technician who installed my system to be very professional and the alarm was installed ahead of the promised date. John then offered to donate $50 to a charity of our choice for every system purchased by a Statesville HOG Chapter member. Seemed like a great way to raise money for MDA and Victory Junction." Memorable HOG Moments Mark & Tommie Terry (our Activities Directors) WIN the trophies!!! Mark is from Hot Springs Arkansas and grew up around boats and his hobbies were water skiing and riding motorcycles. His first motorcycle was a 1970 Honda SL100 that he learned to ride on. Mark started working for a bearing distributor while in high school. He moved to North Carolina in 1987 and opened his own company in 1993 and now has 35 years in the industry. Mark has two children a son Anthony who is 28 and a daughter Lindsay who is 25 and both live in Arkansas. Tommie is a North Carolina girl and grew up riding and showing horses. She is a very accomplished rider and has won dozens or trophies and awards in horse shows and riding competitions. Her father was Alvin Richardson who was known by all in the horse community and together they were the first to drive a six horse team on the Daniel Boone wagon train. Tommie worked for the Department of Social Services for 31 years and retired just before her 50th birthday. Tommie received the Pine’s Award from the Governor which is the state’s highest award for service when she retired. Mark & Tommie were a blind date and married in May of 1989 and will celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. Mark and Tommie started snow skiing in 1990 and were avid skiers for about ten years when they changed directions and got into offshore performance boats. Currently they run a 36 foot Baja Outlaw with over 1600 horsepower at speeds to 100 MPH and have completed over thirty poker runs in 11 states and have trailered their boat over 70,000 miles. You can read about their boating adventures at www.DocksPokerRun.com and see pictures of the boat. They joined the ranks of Harley owners in June of 2008 when gasoline prices got to be too high to operate the boat. Mark has owned four Honda’s over the years but Tommie convinced him there was only one brand of motorcycle and they purchased a 2008 FLHX Street Glide. They joined the Statesville HOG chapter in 2008 after visiting as guests of Sonny & Wanda Deal. Mark has made one long distance ride to date up to Sandusky Bay, Ohio to visit friends and it was an 1100 mile round trip. They both really enjoy riding and look forward to many more rides with the local chapter and some long distant trips. A high spot was at the recent Rolling Thunder Car & Bike show at Tilley’s Harley Davidson where they won 1st place in the “Custom Class” and also won the Peoples Choice Award for “Best in Show”. You can join a HOG chapter, wear a patch and go out on weekend rides. An old Harley rusting in a barn is probably still worth something to someone. When your Harley is stored away for the winter, you never feel ridiculous when you go to the garage to sit on it or polish a little chrome. When you say you’re going to clean the bike, your spouse will always know what you’re up to for the next few hours and not have to worry. It can make you smile on a “bad day”. It gives the local Police a way to earn their salaries and keeps them wondering if you’re a bad ass biker or maybe an influential Judge or Lawyer under those leathers. It gives you the opportunity to try out every metal polish and auto cleaner in the hardware store. Everyone’s second childhood is more fun on a Harley. You don’t have to wear a lime green and purple leather body suit to ride a Harley. You’re more willing to go out and pick up milk and the newspaper if you can ride to the store on your Harley.
