Volume 18, Issue 8 August 2005 Northside Harley News Harley Owners Group INDIANAPOLIS CHAPTER NO. 1, INC CHAPTER #1238 Message from the Director Fun! Exciting! Great idea! First class! These are just a few of the comments I heard after the first annual “Buns to the Brickyard Ride” which was held after the August Chapter meeting. The Dealership arranged for members of the Marion County Drill Team to escort us to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after the Chapter meeting. In addition, the Dealership picked up part of the cost of getting into the track where we watched the “good old boys” practice for the Brickyard. We had over 50 bikes and it looked like a pre-ride for the Loop for Life. In addition, the Dealership had a great breakfast ready for us to eat prior to the meeting and Janie Klank brought us fudge from Fantasy Fudge. We hope to make this an annual ride that will get even better next year (although it will be tough to beat this year). Thank you to Russ, Steve, the Dealership, and the Marion County Drill Team for planning and coordinating a great day! In addition, a special thank you goes to Sherri Hammer for sending the e-mail reminders, taking all of the names, buying the tickets, and coming in on her day off to help distribute the tickets. You make my job a lot easier Sherri! Our monthly dinner in August will be held at Sahm’s Restaurant located at 116th Street and Allisonville Road. It will be on Wednesday, August 17 at 6:30 PM. All Chapter Members are welcome, as well as, any friends who you think may be interested in joining the Chapter. We want this to be a fun and relaxing evening where we can share a few stories and maybe even plan an impromptu ride. I hope to see you there! There will be two events for you to choose from after the September Chapter meeting. First, the Dealership will be holding their annual Open House where they will have a day long party with a band, food, and discounts. In addition, Ken White will be leading the “Amish Ambler Ride” to Nappanee. This will be an overnight ride and you should contact Ken White at 317-877-2195 for more information. Lastly, the name tags have arrived! You can pick them up at the September Chapter meeting. If you signed up for a name tag, please plan to attend the September meeting. As a reminder, the name tags are $8.00 each and you can pay for them when you pick them up. Remember to check the calendar for upcoming rides, and plan to attend a few rides soon. If you have suggestions for future rides please contact me to get them on the activities schedule. Ride safe, Ed. This ride will constitute the North East corner of the Four Corners of Indiana program. This will be a Fall ride though being September in Indiana can mean anything from 90 degrees to frost. So stay tuned for the weather as this ride approaches. This ride seems to have fit well between a Blueberry Festival of the previous weekend in Nappanee and the Apple Festival during the following weekend. I am told that we are fortunate to find a slot and hotel space during this time of year. The Amish Ambler will be an overnight ride with accommodations being at the Marriott Courtyard in Goshen, IN. The hotel can be reached at 874-534-3133 for reservations. Twenty rooms – ten Queen and ten King bedrooms – are reserved under the group block designation HOGR. Be sure to reference this number to get the group rate of $79.00. The reservation cut-off date is August 10 and everyone is responsible for his or her own room charges. This ride will also leave the major interstates in favor of smaller highways and byways of Indiana. Sid has led some rides through this countryside in the past that have taken in some beautiful farmland and countryside. While the details are still being worked out, plan on eating well. After all, if you’re traveling with me, we will always eat. I have tentative reservations at Amish Acres for Saturday lunch at approximately 12:30. These are ‘Threshers Dinners’ served family style at your table rather than a buffet. Moreover, the food is great. It is a limited variety but not a limited quantity. This meal is just under $20.00 per person and includes a drink and desert. We will leave the dealership at 9:00 on Saturday morning September 10, working our way north to Nappanee. Once lunch is done, we will have several options. Amish Acres offers shopping such as a fudge shop, gift shop, and the Ed James Memorial Cheese Shop. Amish Acres also has a movie theater, a theater group performing such plays as Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice. Amish Acres offers back road tours by arrangements, wagon rides, and tours of the house and farm that affords the visitor a very detailed look into Amish life and culture. The area also offers excellent shopping opportunities for hand made crafts and furniture. Shipshewana is just 45 minutes away and there are many local shops and artisans. We will most likely re-group at Amish Acres that evening for our ride to the hotel in Goshen. As I mentioned, details are still being formed and information is being sent to me detailing activities and restaurants. On Sunday morning, we will leave the hotel at 9:00 AM after a hearty breakfast. I am looking into possible stops at the Auburn-Cord–Duesenburg Museum, The Kruse Collection Museum, the WWII Victory Museum, the Windmill Museum or the National Automotive and Truck Museum. I am open to suggestions if someone is more familiar to the area than I am. I will try to bring additional information to the August chapter meeting. Don’t forget that hotel reservations must be made by August 10th. For more information, call me at 317-877-2195 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Ride far, have fun, stay well, Ken White.
