Volume 18, Issue 5 MAY 2005 Northside Harley News Harley Owners Group INDIANAPOLIS CHAPTER NO. 1, INC CHAPTER #1238 Message from the Director Wow! Now that the weather has warmed up and the Chapter meetings are held on Saturday, the participation has really increased. We had almost a 100 people at both the April and May Chapter meetings. It is also great to see so many new people join the Chapter and get involved. As the participation increases the fun will also increase. We are working to plan rides for open weekends and welcome your ideas and suggestions. Please contact me or Sid Lewis if you want to plan a ride, or have an idea for a ride. We would like to get the schedule filled up at least a couple months out so people can plan to be available. Remember, the HOG motto is to “Ride and Have Fun” and we plan to follow that direction. On an administrative note, you probably already noticed that the Newsletter is later than normal this month. Well, that is because we are publishing it a little later due to the meeting change to the first Saturday of the month. We want you to have the latest information and feel that it is best to wait until after we have our monthly meeting before we publish the newsletter. Consequently, you should probably look for it about the middle of the month from here on out. Beginning in May, we will also start planning a monthly dinner for Chapter members. The dinners will be held on the third Wednesday of each month and the location will be published in the newsletter. We will meet at various restaurants each month at 6:30 PM. All Chapter Members are welcome, as well as, any friends who you think may be interested in joining the Chapter. We want this to be a fun and relaxing evening where we can share a few stories and maybe even plan an impromptu ride. Our first dinner on May 18 will be at O’Charley’s Restaurant located at 62nd and Keystone. I hope to see you there! To help encourage ride participation we are also going to start a new process where we will pick a ride (you won’t know which one) where we will pay for the meal of one of the ride participants. We will either select a name from a sign-up sheet or do some type of drawing to select the lucky winners. We will have these drawings at least once per month, so don’t miss an opportunity to ride, and possibly eat for free. Lastly, are you a little frustrated that you cannot remember the names of Chapter Members? Well, to help solve this problem, we will be ordering HOG name tags that can be pinned onto your shirt or vest. These are nice name tags (not the cheap stick-on type you see at conventions) and it would help everyone remember your name. The name tags are $8.00 each and a sign-up sheet is posted on our Chapter board next to the Service entrance. Please sign up if you want a name tag. We will order the new name tags at the end of May and you can pay for them when you pick them up. So, if you are interested, please make sure you get your name on the list before 28 May. Remember to check the calendar for upcoming rides, and plan to attend a few rides soon. If you have suggestions for future rides please contact Sid Lewis to get them on the activities schedule. Mark your calendars for the weekend of July 9th and 10th as the ride will once again offer an over-night option but bigger and better than before. For those who are new to the group or who have yet to make this ride, it was one of our biggest events of 2003. It is a leisurely ride leaving the interstates behind for as many state and county highways and byways as we can cover. This year’s ride will leave from the dealership on Saturday morning after the chapter meeting. We will work our way west, eventually making our way to the Silver Moon restaurant in West Union, IL for a late lunch of some of the state’s best catfish and other home-cooked style meals. After lunch and a dessert stop, we will travel south through the Wabash River Valley and make our way to Evansville, IN. The overnight stop this year is Casino Aztar where I have set aside a block of 25 hotel rooms. We will have 24-hour access to the casino at no charge on the weekend. The hotel is setting aside dedicated and secure parking for our bikes in the parking garage first floor. Once we are at the hotel on Saturday, we will be within walking distance of Max and Erma’s, Starbuck’s, Corky’s BBQ, Cavanaughs (steak and seafood), and Fast Eddies. After a long day’s ride, we won’t have to get back on the bikes to find a place to eat. As we get closer to July, Casino Aztar will contact me with the entertainment that will be appearing at the casino there. On Sunday morning, we can take advantage of the breakfast buffet at the Casino before heading out for a day’s leisurely ride to Indianapolis. While the return route is not yet fully mapped out, rest assured that we will ride through beautiful Southern Indiana back-country and will contain at least one major restaurant stop for lunch. Make your hotel reservations now with Casino Aztar. Each room is available at the discounted rate of $99.00 plus tax. The rooms are being held as a block under the name “Indianapolis H.O.G. Chapter #1.” I have reserved a mix of king and double beds as well as smoking and non-smoking rooms. To increase the chance of getting your first choice on room reservation, call now and reserve early by calling 1-800-544-0120. The cutoff date for reservations is June 9th. Everyone must call the hotel to reserve his or her room under their credit card number. You may cancel without penalty up to 4:00 PM on the day of the reservation. Hopefully, I will be at the May chapter meeting with sign-up sheets so that we will have a more accurate count of those who would like to go on this annual outing. Keep in mind that there are only 3 chapter meetings until this event. The riding season is almost upon us, don’t miss out on a fun ride. For more information, call me at 317-877-2195 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Ride far, have fun, stay well, Ken L. My legal experience began with the Indiana Attorney General's Office in 1973, and, as a trial attorney, court rooms became familiar quickly so I exited for a look at the (more) civil side with Mayflower Transit Company. I was their attorney/claims adjuster and handled injury claims nationwide. A small voice said it was time to try private practice which began shortly thereafter. It appeared clients on the receiving end of claims were noticeably happier, so my practice centered around the people making them. Dealing with insurance companies sometimes has its limits, so the practice expanded into domestic, workman's compensation, collections, and probate areas, with the end result being a little bit of everything which is where I am today. With 30+ years of experience, if I can't help you, I probably know someone who can. Please call me at any time. The ride on May 22nd will be to Rising Sun in southeastern Indiana where we hope to find the Indiana Dragon. For those of you that have not heard about or been to Deal’s Gap at the western end of the Smoky Mountains, check out this web site – http://www.tailofthedragon.com/index.html I hope that you will be able to join us on some or all of the May rides.
