President’s Letter
Spring is Sprung
It’s funny, the things that pop into your head when something triggers it. This time the
trigger was a 70 degree day, signaling spring. I had a roommate back when I was single
and poor. He used to drive me nuts with his favorite saying for this time of year. “Spring
is sprung. Da grass is riz. I wonda where da flowers is?” Forty-five years later, I can’t think
of spring without that stupid rhyme popping into my head. Oh well.
There are better things to contemplate than old rhymes however. For all of us it’s that
THE RIDING SEASON IS OFFICIALLY HERE! It’s one of the best things about living in Colorado. We have a
real winter and the ice and snow of the higher altitudes forces us to limit ourselves to a few flatland rides. We get
to look at the mountains to our west, but it’s only a tease. It’s right there, but we can’t partake. We kill the time by
reading motorcycle magazines, doing maintenance that we had put off during the last riding season and riding to
an occasional Saturday morning breakfast. Still, every time we pull into the garage and see that bike sitting there,
connected to the trickle charger, our anticipation of spring is heightened.
It’s all good. Not being able to do
something you love only makes it all the
better when it finally comes around. The
seasons bring renewal. The Ride Books
will be out as you read this. Seventy degree
days will come regularly now. The sand
will begin to disappear from the mountain
roads. Riding that is the envy of the entire
country will be ours again. I wish you all a
safe and fun season of riding made all the
better since it will be shared with friends!

Avalanche Game
March Social - Avalanche Game
The first ever BMWMCC social event at a Colorado Avalanche game was a
lot of fun! 10 people attended, the seats had a great view and beer was near!
Chris Wilder discovered that with metal detectors, you can’t bring a
pocket knife in and Mr. Coker lost his wife (but that’s another story)!
It was a great game and the Avs came out on top 3-2 in OT!! Hope
to see more folks next time!

Mardi Gras / Daytona
By Kerry M. Miller
Hey Gang, Hope you’re having a great spring and looking forward to the good riding in the coming year.
Let me briefly regale you with my follow up account of my Mardi Gras/Daytona Bike Week ride. A ride of a lifetime!
A trip that started the day of the 104 car pileup on I-25 (March 1st) and concluded March 10th. Ok…ok…ok, I
cheated a little and left for Raton the afternoon before upon seeing snow forecasted for Denver that night.
Remember Winter Storm Titan? Freezing cold sweeping down from the Arctic via the Midwest accompanied by rain,
snow and occasional black ice as far south as mid-Florida? It added an adventurous element and forced me to detour
into previously uncharted territory as we played tag for the first seven days. The morning half of each of the first three
days saw weather that would make all but the most intrepid riders gulp hard and think twice before launching their
iron steed onto the highways and byways; forty degrees at 80 mph with occasional rain. However, good planning, a
hearty constitution and a positive attitude teamed up to overcome all obstacles.
On the opposite end, the afternoons turned very nice as I crossed the storm front. Within a hundred yards I went
from drizzly cold to warm weather, beautiful skies, and a twenty degree temperature change. Literally, a hundred
yards! (85 MPH on I-10 near Houston and instantly my helmet fogged up on the outside from the sudden warm,
moist air, totally blinding me. It was really exciting for several seconds!
Met some great folks in San Angelo, TX; saw the USS Alabama at a military park; indulged in a little bit of Mardi
Gras. Rode on to Daytona Beach Bike Week (my Cackleberry Campground story will bring a chuckle when we talk
next), walked on the beach in St. Augustine and then Iron-Butted my way home, covering over 1600 miles the last two
days. Typical of opportunity meeting preparation I got home in nice weather on Monday, and woke up to a blizzard
on Tuesday morning! Hah!! Here are a few pics…
Also, I put together a couple of videos and posted them to YouTube and to the club web-site. The first covers leaving
through Mardi Gras and runs about 5 ½ minutes. The second covers from New Orleans through Daytona and the
sprint home with a few other goodies thrown in. It runs a bit longer at 13 minutes as it covered more time and
distance and I wanted to give a good representation of the ride.
