JULY 2016
***Next General Meeting – Friday August 19, 2016***
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Mark your calendars for the remaining General Meetings (GM): 3rd Quarter is August 19th and 4th Quarter is October
22nd. For those who are new members, we hold (4) quarterly meetings a year as follows: 1stQ is January Event (TBD),
2ndQ is Kickoff Party, 3rdQ is August Picnic and 4thQ is End of Season. The GM’s are free and open to the public. We
use these meetings to recruit new members.
May was a busy month for our club. We had several events going on and some were simultaneous. Everyone pitched in
and helped to make these events successful.
 Memorial Day Ride - Thank you Debbie, Jon C & Bill H. for another successful year.
 TdC – Thank you Bonnie & Carol and all of those who participated/volunteered. It was a huge success. The
Huggers really made a name for themselves as I continue to hear from many people interested in our group and
what it is all about!
 ADK EXPO – Thank you Don, Ingrid and volunteers. I was a little worried that we might be biting off more than
we could chew with two events being manned, but the club proved my worries were for naught.
 Bike Fest – Thank you Sue Q & volunteers & participants. I heard a lot of great compliments about our tent at
this event and appreciate all the efforts for ensuring we had a successful showing.

Happy Hour in the Park – Thank you Carmela & Roger for organizing this event. The Happy Hour was a huge
success with 70 people participating. We recruited two new members. Several members purchased bicycle
clothing at a discount from a vendor from the Bike Festival who was invited.
Please see the detailed articles inside the newsletter for more information concerning these events.
Continue to review the Huggers Website calendar or our Meetup calendar, as events are being posted and updated
daily. Pauline has posted some new walks; refer to the schedule.
Hope to see everyone at an event or two this Summer!
Mike Sanguinito
President
New members are: Donna Aquilino, Joe Aquilino, Mary Coon, Michael DiDonna, Michelle Green, Ron

our next new members!

WESTERN NEW YORK BIKE FESTIVAL
~Bonnie MacLean
The first ever Western New York Bike Festival took place
during the first weekend of June. It was a wonderful
first year, with over 300 people attending. Attendees
had the opportunity to ride demo bikes, visit displays
from area bike shops, stop in at tables hosted by area
clubs, attend clinics and group rides. Thank you to Sue
Quackenbush who organized our club volunteers and
our club table display, which was so well done!
Although the weather closed the festival down on
Sunday, participants had a ball on Saturday. Plans are
already in the works to make next year’s festival even
better!
ADK OUTDOOR EXPO
~Ingrid Hunte
Thanks to Don Wetzler and all the volunteers who
helped man the club table at this year’s ADK Outdoor
Expo. We heard it was quite windy. Per Don and Ingrid
Hunte, our contacts with ADK, there was a lot of
interest and members handed out lots of club flyers.

The Tour de Cure Team had a rainy start for the day,
with delayed rides, but the weather cleared and the day
turned out beautiful! We had a fabulous group of
volunteers who hosted our tent and greeted visitors.
Riders came and went from the tent all day, and had a
relaxing place to gather and celebrate. Many thanks to
Carol Zimmer for organizing the volunteers, as well as
Mary Ehmann and the rest of our club members who
volunteered. Sue Quackenbush organized a group of
tent decorators, and our team tent won 3rd place in the
tent decorating contest! Our club jersey won 1st place
in the jersey competition! 52 of our riders completed
various routes, several team members completed their
longest ride ever, and in addition to the great cycling,
our team raised over $20,000 for the American Diabetes
Association. It truly was an exciting and inspiring day!

MONDAY BIKE RIDE (BUFFALO)
~ Jim Wopperer
WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY FOR A BIKE RIDE IN
BUFFALO!
On Monday June 20, twenty five (25) bikers met at
Elliott Creek Trailway Park in Amherst (outside Buffalo)
for a 28 mile ride (24 Huggers and one biker from The
Niagara Frontier Bicycle Club who tagged onto the
group in the parking lot at Russ' invitation). A few had
taken time off from work to join in. It was a gloriously
sunny day.
The first part of the ride was on the bike path that
headed North and followed Elliott Creek, past the
University of Buffalo North Campus, and then into and
through Elliott Creek Park onto a road for a short time
which ran parallel to the Tonawanda Creek portion of
the Erie Canal. The group then rode west on the
Creekside Conservation Trail to where it intersected the
Niagara River and the Riverwalk Trail. Most of the ride
was in the bike lanes of these paved trails. As the group
headed Southwest along the Niagara River we had a
good view of Grand Island across the river but
encountered strong head winds coming up from Lake
Erie. The group went under and past the Grand Island
Bridge (and got an amazing view of it) before turning
around at the 14 mile point. Most of the ride had great
views of water.
Now with the wind at our backs, the group FLEW back
to a welcome and well earned lunch and ice cream stop
at Mississippi Mudd’s. Most of us sat on the outdoor
covered patio and enjoyed lunch outside in the shade,
and some sat up on the rooftop terrace.
After lunch, it was an easy ride back to the starting
point for some cold drinks and snacks (vegies and dip,
fresh cut fruit, and homemade brownies) at picnic
tables under a pavilion.
The only incident was one biker got bit by their own
pedal, and Bill H. provided on-the-spot first aid. While
the bike ride had only the one incident “one person
driving to the ride had her bike fly off the bike rack on
the Thruway and had help from Debbie and Dave to get
it back on. Luckily the bike escaped with minor damage
to only the seat and mirror.
Although temperatures were in the high 80’s, the ride
followed water nearly the whole way and the strong

HERB CRUSTED FISH (per 2 pieces)
10 Oz FISH (2 fillets 5-oz each)
This year we will try to coordinate several of our XC Ski
Events with Snowshoeing.
PLEASE GET YOUR SURVEYS IN!
1 Tbsp BREAD CRUMBS, dry (PANKO)
1 Tsp
BASIL & PAPRIKA
½ Tsp FENNEL SEEDS, OREGENO, THYME & SALT
¼ Tsp PEPPER & CRUSHED RED PEPPER
Planning a Pre-planning XC Ski & Snow Shoe Happy
Hour for August or September! Suggestions
appreciated. Let’s brainstorm some events for the
2016-2017 season.
Combine in food processor until finely ground. Dip
fillets until coated on both sides.
Heat oil in a large skillet. Cook 3-4 minutes on each side
or until fish flakes easily with fork.
HEALTH TIP
Good Bugs Love Fatty Fish
~Linda Louison-Krause, Certified Wellness Coach
Salmon is a fatty fish which we should eat more of. In a
Swedish study digestive-system bacteria that helped to
control weight and blood sugar flourished when their
host’s diets contained fish oil. Bacteria tied to obesityrelated inflammation thrived on animal fat. Can you
increase your fatty fish consumption by one a week?
Simple recipes include poaching, grilling, baking or pan
frying. Happy fishing!
