Calhoun Sends Tar Heels Packing
Prior to the beginning of the College World Series, Arizona State's portly left fielder Kole Calhoun was eagerly awaiting a
phone call that never came.
Hoping to be drafted in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, the Sun Devils' junior waited for three days and 50
rounds to learn he was not on the radar of any big league team.
With a chip on his shoulder, the left-hander decided to take out his frustrations on pitchers in Omaha, Neb., as Calhoun
helped rally Arizona State from a four-run deficit to a 12-5 triumph over North Carolina on Thursday.
With the victory, the Sun Devils eliminated the Tar
Heels and are one of four teams remaining in the
College World Series.
In Arizona State's game against North Carolina,
Calhoun went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and
six RBI. He also was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, as he was a cog in ending the Tar
Heels' season.
During last Sunday's College World Series opener, Calhoun, facing Heels' reliever Brian
Moran, who was drafted in the fourth round of this year's draft by the New York Yankees,
provided the knockout punch with a three-run home run in the 10th inning of a 5-2
victory.
Four days later, Calhoun did it again. With the Heels leading 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Sun Devils got on the scoreboard thanks to a grand slam
by Calhoun, who deposited a fastball from Moran into the right field bleachers.
Calhoun's blast, the third of the College World Series, tied the game. However, his biggest hit came two innings later when the Devils blew the game open with
an eight-run seventh inning.
Calhoun started the scoring in the pivotal frame by hitting a two-run double in the gap in right-center field to score Jason Kipnis, who singled and Carlos
Ramirez, who walked. Calhoun's double off reliever Patrick Johnson gave Arizona State a 6-4 lead. It would only get worse for the Tar Heels, who were making
their fourth straight College World Series appearance.
Not only was Calhoun's hitting pivotal for the Sun Devils, but North Carolina's inability to throw
strikes also paved the way for Arizona State to move into the final four of the double-elimination
tournament.

in the fifth inning during an NCAA college baseball tournament super regional, Sunday, June

three homers including a grand slam and 11 RBI to make the All-CWS team.

PEORIA, Ariz. -- There hasn't been a whole lot of positives for the Padres
during the first 17 games of the Cactus League season, though general
manager Kevin Towers isn't hard-pressed to come up with his personal
favorite -- first baseman Kyle Blanks.
"For me, he's been the highlight of the spring," Towers said on Tuesday
after Blanks had two hits, raising his average to .341.
The 22-year-old Blanks is making the most of his extended playing time
this spring with Gold Glove and All-Star Adrian Gonzalez off playing for
Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.
"He's forcing our hand with the way he's playing," said Towers, who likes
that Blanks has done a majority of his damage against frontline starters,
not Minor Leaguers. "If he keeps it up, we're going to have to find a spot
for him."
Blanks, who has played the outfield in the Minor Leagues on just two
occasions, won't turn 23 until September.
Kyle Blanks hits walk off home run for Padres
Update: Kyle Blanks went 2-4 with 3 RBI, including a single and the game
winning 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th inning to lead the Padres
over the Cubs, 4-1.
SAN DIEGO -- Kyle Blanks may be big, but the San Diego rookie has a
variety of skills not associated with a player his size.
Blanks exhibited surprising speed when he hit a two-run inside the park
homer to help fellow rookie Cesar Carrillo earn his first major league
victory in the Padres' 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
Fast Facts
Finding a spot for Blanks, the Padres' Minor League Player of the Year in
2008, will not be easy, not with Gonzalez entrenched at first base for the
foreseeable future.
There may be a move afoot for Blanks to get some time in the outfield,
though it will not likely happen anytime soon, said Towers, who spoke
with Grady Fuson, vice president of scouting and player development,
about that issue earlier Tuesday.
Towers said he doesn't want to mess with Blanks' confidence right now
by asking him to start taking fly balls in Arizona. If the Padres do decide
to see how Blanks looks in the outfield, then it would likely be once the
Triple-A season begins at Portland.
And, as Towers cautioned, it would start by "taking fly balls before
games" before it ever got to the point where Blanks would appear in a
game in the outfield.
For now, Blanks, who leads the team in at-bats (44), runs (11), total bases
(15), doubles (four), home runs (three) and is tied for first in RBIs (nine),
will stick to playing first base, though it might not be at the frequency he
had been.
• Kyle Blanks' inside-the-park homer -- one day after a walk-off HR -- was
the first by a Padre since Sean Burroughs on May 16, 2003, against
Atlanta.
-- ESPN Stats & Information
Blanks won Monday night's game with a three-run homer in the ninth
inning for a 4-1 win over the Cubs. On Tuesday night, he hit a ball off the
top of the wall in center in the eighth that ricocheted to right-center. The
6-foot-6, 285-pound Blanks easily beat the throw home with a headfirst
slide for his eighth homer.
"At times we always preface our remarks by saying, 'For a big man.' I told
him I'm not saying that anymore," Padres manager Bud Black said. "This
guy is athletic. He can run. We've seen him move to the outfield and look
comfortable."
Blanks, a natural first baseman, was moved to the outfield at Triple-A
Portland this season to facilitate his move to the majors with All-Star
Adrian Gonzalez in his way at first base. Since he was called up on June
19, Blanks has steadily improved.
"Being able to see pitching on a more consistent basis, it helps," Blanks
said.
Rookie Will Venable led off the eighth with a walk off Angel Guzman
before Blanks lofted a high fly ball toward the wall in center. Kosuke
Fukudome crashed into the fence as the ball hit off the top of the padding
and caromed toward rightcenter. By the time Fukudome
recovered the ball, Blanks was
already to third base and he
had no trouble beating the
relay.
"I figured if he doesn't catch it,
it's definitely going to be
clanking off the wall," Blanks
said. "I was just happy to hit
the ball after my first three atbats."
After the game Dempster
stated, "I could have made
some better pitches"."I gave up
a home run to the guy in the
lineup you don't want to let
beat you."

PARK FEATURES
Roughrider Park has recently seen dramatic improvements thanks to the
fundraising efforts of the Roughrider Club and Yavapai Alumni. The 2010
season will be played on a newly resurfaced field. During the fall of 08’
the outfield and baselines saw an upgrade. New drainage was installed
under a newly leveled outfield surface. Sod was laid down to replace the
outdated surface. Along with the outfield, the infield dirt surface was
taken up. A clay mixture was brought in and laser graded to allow for
proper drainage and a second to none playing surface. The game mound
and home plate area, as well as the bullpens also saw reconstruction.
The field surface upgrade followed an extensive effort to improve the
complex’s facilities as well. Within recent years, an impressive ten inning
scoreboard was installed. A seating area which allows up to 1500
spectators was constructed. The pride of Roughrider Park is the newly
constructed clubhouse which houses the Riders on game day. Included
are spacious personal lockers, a game day coach’s office, restrooms, and a
fully equipped concession area for spectators.
Future renovations to Roughrider Park are expected to include
improvement to the turf area behind home plate. This will be replaced
with the modern Sports Turf. Also expected is a roof over the already
installed batting cages.
Upcoming goals of the Roughrider fundraising efforts will go toward
paving the driveway and parking area that leads to the field, as well as a
state of the art weight room branching off from the clubhouse. This will
be home to the growing needs of the Roughrider Baseball strength and
p g
conditioningg program
which is second to none.

Yavapai saw yet another winning season in
2009, a top 10 national ranking and its fourth
ACCAC title in the last five years: confirming its
long standing tradition as one of the Nation’s
premiere Junior College baseball programs.
be looked upon to start the season as one of
the better arms for the Roughriders. After
being selected in the 24th round of the 2009
MLB draft by the Atlanta Braves, Upperman
elected to attend Yavapai. Holding opposing
hitters to a .182 Avg and earning a 1.42 ERA at
Notre Dame Prep HS, the Roughrider freshman
will look to carry his dominance over to the
next level. Alex Miranda and Parker Markel
will both compete for a spot in the starting
rotation. Miranda a very competitive and
crafty pitcher from Cibola HS will be looked
upon to bring a left handed arm to the
Roughrider staff. Parker Markel another 2009
draft pick (30th round/Detroit Tigers) brings a
lot of talent to the staff and has only begun to
scratch his potential.
The mission now for 14th-year head coach Sky
Smeltzer and his staff is to continue the
Roughriders storied tradition, in what will be a
challenging 2010 campaign. While renovations
to Roughrider Park have continued for another
consecutive year, Yavapai will again be placed
as the team to beat in the always competitive
ACCAC.
“Our facilities rival any Junior College and with
another conference title, our 2010 opponents
will once again hold Yavapai as a team to beat
in the upcoming season.”
Although an accurate statement, that’s
something the Roughriders have grown
accustomed to. They have been the
Conference favorite each of the last five
seasons and have averaged over 40 wins per
season in that span.
The Roughriders will face an always challenging
ACCAC slate as well as a tough season-opening
road trip to Henderson, NV. There they will
face top 25 opponents Salt Lake CC and College
of Southern Nevada.
Thanks to a talented recruiting class and a
refreshed pitching staff being among that class,
the Roughriders appear to be well equipped to
meet these challenges head on.
Returning this season are eight Roughriders
that helped lead Yavapai to a conference
championship in 2009. Including returning
pitchers Pulama Silva and Riley Welch. Also on
that list is an improved and experienced core of
position players. Incoming transfers Tyler
Bremer, Dustin Hobbs, James Cloud, and
Demarcus Tidwell add even more experience,
bringing the total number of Sophomores on
the 2010 Roughrider roster to thirteen.
“This is a very talented group,” states Smeltzer.
“We lost some very valuable players last spring
and I feel we have replaced the four starting
pitchers that ate up a majority of our innings.
Once again we have put the focus on
developing a strong pitching staff which is
what’s needed to be at the top of the
conference and compete for a National
Championship.”
Although focus has been on replacing the 2009
Roughriders starting staff, which saw 3 of the 4
transferring to Division I programs and the
Relief Pitching
fourth, Kirby Yates, to professional baseball, the
Roughrider lineup will look to be among the
conferences elite once again.
“The strength of this years position players will
be our depth. We led the conference in hitting
in 2009 and we will return five of those hitters
that have proven themselves at this level.”
Returning middle infielders Ty Forney (.357, 13
2B, 38 RBI) and Cam Schiller (.363, 16 2B, 34
RBI) will be looked upon once again to lead the
Roughrider lineup.
“We are very fortunate to return Cam and Ty
after the success they earned last spring,”
comments Smeltzer. “With the addition of
some very talented transfers and incoming
Freshman we feel we add the mixture of power
and speed that has made our lineup successful.
A majority of our games will be won through
our pitching staff and solid defense, but we will
win our share of games with the bat as well.”
Starting Pitching
-Riley Welch will start the season as the only
returning starting pitcher for the Roughriders
staff. After a successful summer and a year of
experience Welch will be counted on early as
one of four pitchers in the Roughrider starting
rotation. One of three summer transfers, Tyler
Bremer will begin the season as the opening
day starter. A transfer from University of
California-Davis, Bremer enjoyed a very
successful freshman campaign. Bremer tossed
21 innings as a freshman for the Ags earning a
2.57 ERA while holding opponents to a .240
batting average. Dustin Hobbs a transfer from
Kansas State University will be among the top
starters for the Roughriders pitching staff as
well. As a freshman at Kansas State, Hobbs
struck out 22 hitters in 14 innings of work.
Another dominant arm, Casey Upperman will
-Pulama Silva enters the 2010 season as the
Roughriders closer after leading the Nation in
saves (17) and holding opponent hitters to a
.130 BA. Only allowing 3 earned runs all
season, Silva will once again be a very tough
challenge for the Yavapai competition. James
Dykstra will be one of four Roughrider two way
players. Dykstra a freshman from San Diego,
CA will be one of the first arms out of the
bullpen for the Roughriders in 2010. Sporting a
mid 90’s fastball and a very competitive
demeanor, Dykstra’s make-up will be perfectly
suited to lead Silva into the later innings of a
game. Gaige McKeon, perhaps the biggest
surprise among the pitching staff, had a very
impressive fall. A Bagdad HS graduate, McKeon
has improved tremendously and consistently
misses barrels. Tony Vocca and Ethan Leiter
will both compete for innings out of the bullpen
while also making their mark in the Roughrider
lineup. Vocca comes to Yavapai after being the
number one pitcher at Mingus HS and leading
his team to consecutive state titles. Ethan
Leiter (Osceola, IN) owns an electric arm and
may have as much upside as any arm on the
Roughriders staff.
Catchers
Replacing two time All-Conference selection
Dominic Piazza was goal number one for the
Roughrider coaching staff. Redshirt Freshman
11 | P a g e
www.goroughriders.com
and San Diego State University transfer Aaron
Fujiki is the likely answer along with
newcomer’s Blaine Schmidt and Sean Smedley.
Fujiki spent the spring of 2009 awaiting
eligibility for what is expected to be a very
productive year for the Oahu native.
“Defensively Aaron is as good as they come. He
has the ability to win games behind the plate
and that’s what we needed to replace after
losing Piazza” adds Smeltzer. Deer Valley prep
Blaine Schmidt will look to compete against
Fujiki and has the offensive potential to have
his bat in the line-up every day. Smedley
(Desert Valley HS) brings a consistency and
hardnosed mentality that will also allow him to
compete against the other Rider catchers.
Third Base
Perhaps as valuable a loss as Piazza, Brett
Sowers transfers to Oral Roberts leaving a
newly vacant position to fill at third. Returning
Ethan Leiter (Osceola, IN) has as much upside
as any player on the Roughrider roster. As he
continues to find a defensive position, his bat
will allow him to find time at third base as well
as other positions on the field. Cam Schiller
could also find innings at third base with the
emergence of added middle infield depth.
Shortstop
The primary competition for the starting
shortstop position once again has been put on
the shoulders of returning Riders Cam Schiller
and Ty Forney. Schiller a returning All-Region I
shortstop put together a very impressive
freshman campaign after hitting .363, 16 2B,
and swiping 14 bases. With an added year and
every day playing experience Forney may very
well be best suited for making a position
change across second base. “Forney has a
knack for getting on base and making things
happen” says Smeltzer. After batting in the
middle of the order as a freshman in 2009 and
driving in 38 runs while accumulating a .420 On
Base Percentage, that statement rings true.
“Defensively Forney has the ability to be the
best shortstop in the league. It just so happens
that he is competing with Cam for that spot and
we’ll have to see how that competition pans
out” adds Smeltzer. Either way the depth in
the middle of the field for the 2010 Roughriders
will be very fun to watch.
Second Base
sophomore Cameron Brown has awaited his
opportunity and is more than capable of
making third his everyday position. A strong
and athletic player, Brown also has the ability
to hit for power. Another Notre Dame Prep
grad, Tony Piazza has shown the ability to be
one of the Roughriders nine best hitters and
making the position change from a high school
short stop to third could be in his best interest.
Returner Zach Haley has battled through
injuries and will look to make his mark in this
2010 season. After hitting .400 in limited
action as a freshman Haley will once again be
counted on to play the position with
consistency and effort. Newcomer Ashton
McCoy (Pinnacle HS) has the ability to play
anywhere on the infield but will probably see
the majority of his freshman season at second
for the Roughriders. McCoy has the ability to
change a game with his glove and at the plate.
First Base
Newcomers Devon Zenn, Tony Piazza, and
Ethan Leiter have battled for the right to be
opening day starters at the corner. Zenn an
outfielder by trade has shown the versatility to
play either position and add another left
handed bat to the Riders lineup. A 27th round
draft selection by the Anaheim Angels, Zenn
could enjoy a lot of success before his time at
Yavapai is up.
Outfield
After losing 4 sophomore outfielders in 2009,
there are many new faces roaming the outfield
at Roughrider Park. Incoming transfer
Demarcus Tidwell (Granada, MS) adds
impressive tools to the revamped Rider lineup
as does redshirt freshman Andrew Darwin (San
Jacinto, CA). Darwin a 31st round selection by
the LA Dodgers n the 2008 MLB draft will look
to continue his improvement. With the
addition of Devon Zenn, the depth in the
middle of the outfield will be a strength. After
losing centerfielder Jordan Payne, the Rider
coaching staff will look towards one of these
players to step in and command the position.
Newcomer Steven Bier has the ability to hit in
the middle of the Roughrider Lineup. A Desert
Ridge, AZ grad was an all-state Arizona
outfielder. He will spend time at a corner
outfield position as will transfer James Cloud.
Cloud is another Rider outfielder with
impressive tools that will look to piece
everything together this spring. James Dykstra
will also compete for a position in the corner of
the outfield while serving as a two-way player
for the Roughriders.

2010 YAVPAI BASEBALL
1
In 1996, Sky Smeltzer became the fifth head baseball
coach in the Yavapai College baseball program’s
history. In only his second season at the helm, he lead
the Roughriders to their first conference
championship, a feat repeated in the '99, '05, `06,
’07, and ‘09 seasons. Coach Smeltzer is the all time
wins leader in the history of the tradition rich Yavapai
baseball program with an all-time record of 511-2474 (.674).
During his tenure at YC, Smeltzer has coached 60 AllConference players, 58 All-Region players, 15 NJCAA AllAmericans, and 3 Academic All-Americans. Smeltzer
has been a Junior College coach for 16 years and is
most proud of the after-YC successes his players have
had. Under his tutelage, Yavapai is averaging 40 wins
per season in the very competitive Arizona Community
College Athletic Conference and a challenging nonconference schedule.

The 2007 season unveiled a fundraising campaign
Smeltzer took on over 10 years ago; Roughrider Park
has a new stadium and locker room, concession stand,
scoreboard, and bathrooms for players and visitors
alike to utilize. The facility improvements continued
into 2008 with the renovation of the playing surface at
Roughrider Park. The outfield and sideline sod was
replaced along with the infield surface. Coach
Smeltzer’s fundraising efforts along with commitment
from the athletic department have lead to the finest baseball facility
in the ACCAC. Smeltzer is a former two sport Division I athlete having played football and baseball at the University of
Wyoming. He ended his career at UW as the all- time homerun record holder, single season and career RBI record holder, and
fifth in career triples. Upon graduating from Wyoming, he played one season of professional baseball for the Salt Lake
Trappers of the Pioneer League. He began his coaching career at Otero Junior College before returning to Wyoming as a

Brandon Bailey enters his
second season as the
Yavapai College Pitching
Coach. The 2009
Roughrider pitching staff
enjoyed great success in
Bailey’s first season,
setting six single season
records including ERA
(2.95) and SO (455).
Several of the Roughrider
pitchers ranked among
the nation’s best in 2009. Merrill Kelly ended the regular season with a 0.79 ERA, setting a school record by only allowing 7
earned runs in 80 innings. Kelly was a Region 1, ACCAC First Team selection as well as a NJCAA All-American. Rick Anton
ranked 7th in the country in SO (105) while earning Region 1, ACCAC second team honors. Russell Havens set a Yavapai
College record and led the country in walks allowed; only issuing 4 BB in 65 plus innings of work. Pulama Silva set a school
record for saves (17) in a single season, coming up only two saves shy of breaking the NJCAA single season record. Silva
permitted only 3 earned runs in 32 innings during the ’09 season while recording 41 SO.
Bailey came to Yavapai College from Cochise
College where he worked for head coach and former
Yavapai assistant Todd Inglehart as the Apache pitching
coach. Prior to Cochise, Bailey served as the student
assistant coach at the University of Utah from 2005 to

as well as two Region XV titles, in those two seasons. Bailey
continued his playing career at the University of Utah,

General: Tony Vocca is a 2 way threat that
showed both competitiveness on the mound
and at the plate this fall. He will see time in
the DH spot along with coming out of the pen
for the Roughriders. His left handed power
sets up perfectly for the friendly confines of
Roughrider Park.
General: Ashton McCoy will spend most of
the ’10 season competing for the starting
second base position as he continues to
transition from being a high school shortstop.
He has the ability to change a game both
defensively and at the plate. Possesses gap
power and handles the bat extremely well.
General: Alex will compete for one of the four
starting rotation spots on the YC pitching
staff. Crafty left handed pitcher with a very
good change-up and a developing slider. Alex
fits the profile of the many left handed
pitchers that have dominated ACCAC
conference play over the past years.
Smeltzer on Vocca “Tony is another Yavapai
County kid. He is a tremendous competitor.
He will be a 2 way player for us this spring.
He has a dangerous left handed swing and
will get many AB’s in the DH spot. On the
mound he is a bull-dog. He will be a stopper
out of the pen for us in ’09.”
Smeltzer on McCoy “Ashton continues to
improve with the guidance of both Schiller
and Forney. With added confidence from
playing a full college baseball season I expect
very good things from (Ash).”
Smeltzer on Miranda- “Alex is your typical
left handed pitcher with a very good change
up. He knows how to locate all of his pitches
and change speeds. The thing I like about
Alex the most is he knows how to compete,
and really has a will to win.”

Smeltzer on Leiter“Leiter can really hit. He
needs to keep working hard to find a position
because he is extremely athletic just not very
skilled at a specific defensive position. But
Ethan can and will hit.”
Prior to Yavapai – Prepped at Penn High
School in Osceola, Indiana.

General: Tony Piazza will compete for time
for both 1st and 3rd base and could also see
some time in the DH spot. Possesses the
potential to hit for a lot of power before his
career at Yavapai is over. Will be a solid
defender at either corner position. Serious
competitor with leadership qualities who will
help lead the Roughriders this spring and
next season. Maintained a 4.0 GPA this fall
semester.
Smeltzer on Piazza-“When this young man
makes contact the ball makes a different
sound coming of the bat. He has tremendous
bat speed. Made some adjustments at the
plate this fall to help him become a complete
hitter. Works very hard in the weight room, I
wouldn’t be surprised if he put on 25lbs
throughout the fall.”

General: Joe Hollowell is a left handed
pitcher who will start the season in the ’10
season in the bullpen. Very good change up
and a mid 80’s fastball, Hollowell has the
combination to be successful in the ACCAC.
Smeltzer on Hollowell “Joe is another left
handed arm that gives us options in the
bullpen for the ’09 season. He is a great kid
that works tremendously hard. With more
consistency and confidence he has the ability
develop into a starting pitcher.”

General: Aaron Fujiki returns as a redshirt
freshman. A mid-year transfer in 2009, Fujiki
spent his first semester at San Diego State
University. An excellent defensive catcher
Fujiki will control opposing base stealers and
looked upon to handle a talented but
inexperienced core of pitchers.
Smeltzer on Fujiki- “Aaron is as good as they
come defensively. He has an above average
arm, quick feet and the mentality to play the
position.”

General: Blaine Schmidt will compete for
time behind the plate with Aaron Fujiki and
Sean Smedley. Suffered a hand injury that cut
his fall practice short, but showed his ability
to be a dangerous threat at the plate. Has
good pop and handles the bat extremely well.
General: Devon Zenn comes to Yavapai after
being drafted in the 27th round by the
Anaheim Angels. Primarily an outfielder Zenn
may also see time at first base. Has the ability
to hit for both average and power and may be
the Roughriders best baserunner.
Smeltzer on Schmidt “Blaine is a hardnosed
kid who comes to practice every day and
works. He is an offensive catcher that has
improved behind the plate this fall. I always
like having depth at the catching position so
you can keep them fresh. Having Fujiki,
Blaine, and Smedley gives us this option.”
Smeltzer on Zenn-“Devon is a very fun
player to watch. He has begun to make the
adjustment from being a good high school
player to becoming a good college player. He
obviously has the tools to play after college
and that will be a very real possibility as he
continues to compete against the caliber of
pitching in the ACCAC.”

General: Sean Smedley will compete among
Fujiki and Schmidt at the catcher position.
Brings knowledge of the game and a tireless
work ethic. Has shown the ability to handle a
pitching staff and has been one of the most
improved players on the Roughriders roster.
General: Andrews will battle for a spot in the
OF during the ’10 season. Big strong
outfielder has all the tools to become a great
player down the road. Redshirted the ’09
season. Had a productive fall showcasing his
incredible athletic ability.
Smeltzer on Smedley “Sean is a big strong
young man. He has a great work ethic and
continues to improve every day. We really
have three catchers that could see time this
season.”
Smeltzer on Darwin “Drew is a five tool
baseball player. He is very raw in his
development as a baseball player. He does
things physically that leave me scratching my
head because they are unbelievable. He has
grown a tremendous amount since he
stepped on our campus.”

General: Injured for most of fall practice, was
recruited to be a two way player. Had the
opportunity to pitch at the end of fall
workouts and impressed YC coaches with his
low-mid 90’s fastball. Will get a chance to
prove his abilities in the OF as well as starting
the season in the YC bullpen.
Smeltzer on Dykstra- “James has a great
pitchers frame and a very live arm. He will
get some quality innings in the spring. It’s
hard to say how much he will contribute at
the plate due to his injury in the fall but he is
suppose to be able to really play. His brother
was a first round pick of the San Diego Padres

General: Casey will compete for one of the
four starting rotation spots on the YC pitching
staff. Progressed from a thrower to a pitcher
and was dominating for the greater part of
fall workouts against both outside
competition and in scrimmages. Mixes a low
90’s fastball with a good 12-6 curveball,
slider, and change-up.
Smeltzer on Upperman -“Casey has a very
live arm. He has the ability to dominate a
game at this level. I am very happy with the
progress he made this fall. He is learning how
to pitch compared to just throwing hard and
should get a bunch of innings this spring. “

spots on the YC pitching staff. Was dominant
at times during fall practice, but must
continue to become more consistent. Has a
low 90’s fastball with 2 very good off-speed
pitches in a sharp slider and outstanding
change-up.
Smeltzer on Markel- “Parker has the most
potential and the best “stuff’” of any arm on
our pitching staff. He will continue to grow
and progress as a pitcher, but I feel he has the
best chance of any one of our pitchers to
someday play in the big leagues.”

DOWNTOWN
PRESCOTT
HOME OF YAVAPAI COLLEGE
Through its teaching and engagement, Yavapai College serves as
an educational stepping stone for the people of Yavapai County
and the city of Prescott, Arizona. From the modern architecture
seen throughout campus to the geographic location and extensive
support systems, Yavapai offers the best in a junior college
experience.
Beyond the newly refurbished campus lies a breathtaking view of
Thumb Butte. Just outside the city limits lies Watson Lake. A
natural lake located beneath the bubble rock formations known
to Prescott and northern Arizona.
In the center of it all lays “Old Town”, a historic downtown
Prescott that dates back to the 1800s.
The city of Prescott speaks for itself. Rated one of the top 5
places to live by Money Magazine, Prescott offers the
convenience of a big city with the feel of small town America.
That listing is among the praise affirming the charm of Yavapai
College campus as well. Newly remodeled buildings and other
landscapes synonymous with the natural beauty of the southwest
add something extra to the experience among Yavapai students.
To add to the quality of Prescott, Yavapai College has seen
extensive upgrades. A recent approval of a bond saw more than
$60 million dollars used on the improvement of Yavapai campus,
including classrooms and athletic funding. With this funding
Yavapai has seen improvements in technology as well. Personal
computers in classrooms and free academic assistance highlight
the numerous support systems here at Yavapai.
