Fourth of July
festivities
We decided to throw a sparkling 4th of
July party only to discover to our dismay
that our favorite Bingo Palace was also
throwing a party and advertising two new
never before played games. It was a
dilemma. So we decided to invite all our
guests to come to play Bingo and go to our
house afterwards for a late dinner and to
watch the many fireworks you can see
from our deck.
It turned out to be a great idea. There
were eleven of us at two tables playing
Bingo, the odd number occurring because
Bruce lost his wife to cancer a few months
ago and was aching for something to ease
his loneliness. He was more cheerful than
I expected and at one point was the life of
the party.
I found myself very eager to try the
new games and impatient to get started.
Our tables were in the center of the room
and of the action as we laughed and called
out to one another. Someone in our group
won right off and that caused more laughter and good feeling. Soon we came to the
first new game. It was called the “naked
X” and it was the big X with two corners
missing. It was a delight to play, but none
of our group won.
At the break we had to discourage
everyone from eating, as we would soon
have dinner. We had decided on ham
salad, cold cuts, potato salad, cheese, finger greens, and a variety of breads to be
followed by Kate’s special Flaming
Dessert—which was Oreos, ice cream,
strawberries and mountains of whipped
cream. “Anybody who wants to know
where the ‘flaming’ comes from can have
a candle,” pronounced Kate.
The second new game was one called
four corners plus a little square which is
particularly difficult to keep track of and
almost amounts to a blackout. Bruce won
this one, much to everyone’s delight as it
encouraged him to loosen up and have
fun. His face was red as he pronounced he
was really enjoying himself after several
months of depression.
Soon we left the Bingo Palace and traveled to our house for dinner, where once
again we found Bruce to be the center of
things. He balanced a hugely loaded plate
and said, “I am having my first full meal
in ages.”
“Did you leave anything for the rest of
us?” one wag inquired.
“Are we all supposed to eat off your
plate?” asked another.
“Get out,” said Bruce happily, wandering away to find a place to sit.
When the fireworks started we were all
well fed and comfortable in deck chairs,
of which we had exactly the right number.
Bruce decided to be the cheerleader for the
‘Oos’ and ‘Aahs’ that followed every
beautiful display. He made huge noises
and got everyone laughing at his antics.
“Doesn’t it seem fireworks have gotten
far more complicated and wonderful from
when I was a kid?” he asked ingenuously,
“They certainly have,” Kate chimed in.
“When I was a kid, all we had were bottle
rockets and loud bangs.”
“Oh, come on,” I added. “We had a
town display. Remember sitting in the
bleachers and watching?”
“Yes, I do,” she replied. “But it’s not
like having them on the water. I think the
water makes it all just glorious.”
...If all the salt in the world’s oceans were removed and spread out, it would cover all the
world’s land in a layer 40 feet deep.
…Researchers using standard statistical
methods have determined that it takes an average
of 142 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.
…If you’re planning to wrap a mummy in the proper
Egyptian manner, you’ll need about 500 feet of linen
to finish the job.
…In the 1960s, American spies in the Soviet Union
had a novel way to eavesdrop on conversations:
They used cats. The CIA agents placed listening devices on the felines in order to hear conversations
that might take place on a park bench or near an
open window.
…Actors Kevin Spacey and Val Kilmer were classmates in high school.
…According to the World Health Organization, the
United States ranks 48th in the world in alcohol consumption per capita, with the average adult drinking
the equivalent of nearly 2.5 gallons of pure, undiluted alcohol per year. You might be surprised to
learn that Russia didn’t top the list; Moldova and
Lithuania beat out the Russians, and Belarus scored
the world’s biggest drinkers, with the average adult
consuming a whopping 4.6 gallons annually.

eral’s Office (AGO) investigates complaints
about nonprofits, including such allegations
as misuse of charitable funds, fraudulent
fundraising activities, violations of professional solicitation standards, Bingo and
charitable gaming issues, nonprofit theft and
embezzlement, and breaches of fiduciary
duty by nonprofit leaders.
Typically, there are three ways to file a
complaint. The web site of the investigating
office will have an online form you can fill
out and submit, there will be a phone number you can call with your complaint, or you
can mail in a letter, or fill out and mail a
form which also may be found on the web
site.
Keep in mind that these are very busy offices that do not have time to investigate
gossip like certain players winning too
much. It is also unlikely that they would investigate anonymous complaints: If a person isn’t willing to put his or her name to
whatever allegation is being made, how serious could it be?
It is extremely important to remember
that lodging a complaint like this is serious
business: You are basically accusing a nonprofit of wrongdoing and requesting that an
investigation take place.
This move could also backfire and cause
the very thing you are trying to avoid—losing another Bingo hall. After all, if I was a
Bingo manager who had done nothing
wrong, yet found that players had filed a
complaint with authorities against my
games, I would certainly consider closing
up shop and finding a better way to generate
dollars for charity. —Guy

Hi E.M.,
I’m not quite sure how giving people information about filing a complaint about a
Bingo hall is going to help your cause, but
here it is nonetheless.
Filing a complaint is generally the same
in most states, the only difference being
where to direct the complaint, because
Bingo is regulated by different entities depending on the state where the Bingo operates.
The easiest way to get started is to go online and search under “Bingo Complaint
(State Name). This will identify the agency
to which you would direct a complaint.
In your state, Ohio, the Attorney Gen-
Talbert Ave.

Hi Guy,
There is a small but very outspoken
group of Bingo players in my area that constantly complains that “select” players seem
to win more than others. They get especially
upset when someone wins who is related to
someone who works at the Bingo hall—
even if it is a relation as distant as a worker’s
wife’s cousin’s daughter’s best friend.
I think it is crazy that these people are so
determined to spoil Bingo for themselves by
being suspicious of anything and anyone
connected with it. (Frankly, I’m not quite
sure why they go to Bingo at all if it upsets
them so much.) My worry is that if they
keep up with these complaints they will
make other people upset with Bingo and decide not to play. (This would be a real mess
because as it is we have lost a number of
games due to fewer people playing, and no
one wants to lose anymore.)
I had the idea that it might quiet these
people down if someone was able to challenge them and tell them that if they think
the games are so bad, why don’t they contact the Bingo inspector and file a complaint. I have no idea what the process is,
but it seems to me that an authority like that
would help them realize that griping that
“Mary S. wins too much” is trivial and unnecessary.
Can you tell me what someone does to
file a complaint about a Bingo game? Is it a
big deal or a complicated process? Thanks
for your input. —E.M., Ohio, via email

Meat Loaf
■ A Southern version of a classic
Dear Annie,
Many years ago my parents and I
stayed at a bed and breakfast in Savannah,
Georgia. They served a wonderful meat
loaf. It was absolutely delicious and I
would like to surprise my parents and
make it for them. Can you suggest some
Southern versions of meat loaf that might
taste like the one they served us? Thanks.

SALISBURY MEAT LOAF
Dear Tara Sue,
Obviously your parents must have some
ties to the South, naming you Tara. That’s a
very pretty name. Back to your question, I
have many cookbooks from the South. Here
are three recipes I found for meat loaf. The
last two come from a bed and breakfast.
Good luck and enjoy. —Annie

Dear Savvy Senior,
What are the best websites for finding
reliable health information on the Internet? I usually do a Google search on a
symptom, drug or health condition when
I want to research something, but with so
much information out there I’m not sure
what I can trust.
Untrusting Senior
Dear Untrusting,
You’re wise not to believe everything
you read, especially when it comes to
health and medical information on the
World Wide Web. To help you sort
through the online clutter and locate reliable, trustworthy medical information,
here are a few tips to follow, along with
some top-rated sites you can always turn
to with confidence.
How to Verify
As a general rule, health and medical
information websites sponsored by the
U.S. government, not-for-profit health or
medical organizations, and university
medical centers are the most reliable resources on the Internet. While sites supported by for-profit companies, such as
drug or insurance companies who may be
trying to sell you their products, are usually not your best option.
To find out who’s sponsoring a site and
where the information came from, click on
the “About Us” tab on the site’s home
page.
Also look for the red and blue “HONcode” seal at the bottom of each page,
which means the site has credible information and is certified by the Health On
the Net Foundation. However, government sponsored health sites don’t have the
seal.
Also be aware that good health and
medical information changes all the time
so check the date that information was
published to make sure it’s current. And,
if you’re doing research online before seeing a doctor, print your findings out on
paper, including the site you got your information from, so you can review it together.

Thursday Nights
While there are dozens of great websites that provide reliable, trustworthy, unbiased health and medical information,
here are two of the best all-purpose sites
that are easy to use.
Medlineplus.gov: Sponsored by the
National Institutes of Health and managed
by the U.S. National Library of Medicine,
MedlinePlus provides information on
more than 900 diseases and conditions in
their “Health Topics” section, and links to
other trusted resources.
It also provides a directory of hospitals,
clinics and healthcare providers, a medical
encyclopedia and medical dictionary, tutorials on common conditions, tests, and
treatments, extensive information on prescription drugs, supplements and herbs,
and links to thousands of clinical trials. It
even offers a senior specific health site
(nihseniorhealth.gov) that makes age-related health information easier to get.
MayoClinic.com: Owned by the Mayo
Foundation for Medical Education and
Research, this site is produced by more
than 3,300 physicians, scientists and researchers from Mayo Clinic, and provides
in-depth, easy-to-understand information
on hundreds of diseases and conditions,
drugs and supplements, tests and procedures. It also offers a nifty “Symptom
Checker” tool and “First-Aid Guide” for
fast answers to all types of health conditions, along with medical blogs, expert answers, videos and links to additional
resources.
Disease Specific Sites
There are also dozens of other sites
dedicated to specific diseases and conditions. Here are some top-rated sites as
listed by the Medical Library Association
on cancer, heart disease, diabetes and
Alzheimer’s disease.
Cancer: American Cancer Society
(cancer.org), National Cancer Institute
(cancer.gov), Association of Cancer Online Resources (acor.org) and Cancer Care
(cancercare.org).
Heart disease: American Heart Association (americanheart.org), National
Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
(www.nhlbi.nih.gov) and Congenital
Heart Information Network (tchin.org).
Diabetes: American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org), National Diabetes Education Program (ndep.nih.gov), Joslin
Diabetes
Center
(www.joslin.harvard.edu), and Diabetes
Monitor (diabetesmonitor.com).
Alzheimer’s disease: Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org), Fisher Center for
Alzheimer’s Research Foundation (alzinfo.org), and Alzheimers.gov.

I bumped into my number one fan, Carolyn, at Bingo a while back. I call her that
because she always tells me how much her
husband and she enjoy my column. That’s
such an ego boost; the same as when I get
an email out of the blue, but yet better because we’re face to face. I’ve been writing
this column for a very long time and I hope
I’ve provided some insight, a laugh or two,
and a few times when you read it and ask,
“Really?” Or maybe, “How many margaritas did she have while writing that?
Bingo has changed a lot over the years,
but a few things remain constant. One of
those is the friendships and camaraderie that
develop among Bingo players. Since some
of us tend to sit in the same seats week after
week, we become friends with those around
us. We share sweet treats brought from
home and root each other to victory when
we’re set/on to win a game. Another constant is the welcoming attitude to strangers
who come to play at a new game. Other regular players do not hesitate to help the new-

comer get started by explaining the games,
giving directions to the bathroom, and in
general being helpful. At least that’s the way
it is at the Bingo halls I frequent. Sure,
there’s a rotten apple player once in a while
who snarls and growls when someone else
wins a game, but for the most part, that is
the exception to the rule. One of those exceptions happened to my close friends who
tend to win frequently at Bingo. When the
wife hollered Bingo several times at one
session, another player got increasingly
vocal. After yet another win, the irate loser
lost it completely. He jumped up, threw his
cards on the table, and stomped out of the
Bingo hall. My friends laughed about the incident, but what the heck? Don’t we all buy
in and expect to win? What did the sour
grapes person want my friend to do? Should
she have sat quietly and not played her
cards? Should she have been the one to
leave the hall because she’d won her quota?
I don’t think so! I changed a couple of details in this story because a long time ago I
related a humorous incident that happened
at Bingo and one of the people involved got
really angry with me even though no names
had been mentioned. I never want to offend
anyone, so if I have in any way over the
years, forgive me. I was probably under the
influence of one too many margaritas because it was Drink a Margarita Day; an
event which occurs several times a month
in Nancy’s world.
Until next month, may Lady Luck blow
you kisses as you dance out the door with
dollars. Win big, as my number one fan did
this spring. Congrats to Carolyn. I’m ready
to go to lunch on you whenever you have
the time. The rest of you can email me to

stories
at

your story in As I See It, I promise to change
a few details to protect the guilty.

Dear Dream Lady,
I have had unsettling dreams lately and
don’t know what to make of them. I have
been dreaming of being in a very large,
well-lit house, but it is full of scampering
mice! I am a very clean person and even
though I live in a small trailer, I keep it
spotlessly clean. These dreams are upsetting me. Should I be worried?

Dear Therese,
First, congratulations on two counts—
that you are 93 and that you are a 50-year

Dear Dream Lady,
My dreams are always that I am lost. I
go into a building and come out, and then
I walk for blocks to find my street. Or I am
on a bus and I get off and I cannot find my
block and I walk for blocks and blocks
until I wake up. I have these dreams often,
about once a month. I am a 50-year Bingo
player and enjoy it so much. I read the
Bingo Bugle all the time and enjoy your
column; there are times I don’t get it because they run out. I am enclosing an
SASE in case I don’t get the Bingo Bugle
this month. I am 93 years old.

Dear Esther,
To dream of mice foretells discord
among your friends and/or family and social embarrassment. This makes sense
when you think that mice proliferate in unsanitary conditions. The good symbol is
your home in your dream – it is large and
full of light which means you are open
about your thoughts and feelings. Your
dream is giving you a word of caution –
maybe your openness leaves you vulnerable to others’ unkind acts? Be alert for discord, but it sounds like you are skilled at
smoothing things over so I predict your
“mouse” dreams will go away soon. —

Fact: Not everyone is a good candidate
for LASIK. If your corneas are too thin or
irregular, or if you have certain eye or
health diseases, LASIK may not be right
for you. A qualified ophthalmologist specializing in refractive surgery can evaluate
your vision and health to help determine if
you are a good candidate for LASIK.
Myth: You can cut the cost of LASIK
by shopping around for a special deal.
Fact: It’s true that many LASIK centers
advertise special deals, but when it comes
to your vision, you want what’s best for
your eyes, not your wallet. Bargain-priced
vision correction may not include the level
of care you want or use the latest technologies. Look for an experienced, highly qualified surgeon who works with the most
advanced LASIK technologies available
today. One deal you can feel good about:
Many refractive surgeons offer free
LASIK consultations.
To find out more about LASIK, read the
American Refractive Surgery Council’s
“Insight” blog at www.americanrefractivesurgerycouncil.org/blog.
Lasik
■ Myths and Facts
Myth: The LASIK procedure is the
same today as when it was first performed
20 years ago.
Fact: Many new LASIK technologies
and techniques have been introduced over
the past two decades, many in just the past
few years, that have improved the safety
and visual results achieved for people
choosing LASIK. As a result, today,
LASIK has a 96 percent patient satisfaction rate.
Myth: You can’t have LASIK if you
have astigmatism.
Fact: LASIK is approved to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Advancements in LASIK make it
possible for more people with different
kinds of vision prescriptions to be treated
than ever before.
Myth: Everyone who wants LASIK
can have it done.

MILLION DOLLAR
SLOT JACKPOT!
A lucky Los Angeles lady is now
$1,058,333.33 richer thanks to a bit of
stubbornness during a recent trip to
Pechanga Resort & Casino. The winner, wishing to remain unidentified,
scored the huge progressive jackpot
at 8:00p.m. Sunday, June 12 on a
$1.00 Golden Pagodas Gold Series
slot machine by Rocket Gaming Systems. She said she had $80 in the machine and had played for about 30
minutes before striking the windfall.
Her son and his fiancé had wanted to
leave the resort/casino some time earlier, though mom opted to keep playing. She found her diligence rewarded
as the 12th person to hit more than $1
million at Pechanga Resort & Casino.
Sunday, June 14th’s million dollar
jackpot marks the 12th more-thanone-million-dollar win at Pechanga
Resort & Casino. Five of these jackpots have been won on Gold Series
slots by Rocket Gaming Systems, the

■ Someone got the message!
For the sixteen years I have been writing
this column I have PLEADED with Bingo
halls to change some of the words used in
instructions and advertising. My biggest pet
peeve has always been the use of the word
“less” when grammar REQUIRES that the
word “fewer” be used.
It is very common to hear a Bingo caller
announce that there will be a special prize
for anyone who has a Bingo in “36 numbers
or LESS.” I cringe when I hear that. I have,
year after year, asked in this column why in
heaven’s name callers don’t say FEWER.
It’s not just a personal preference on my account. It’s a long-standing rule of the English language. If you can COUNT items, it’s
FEWER. If you can’t count them, it’s LESS.
For example. FEWER cans. LESS garbage.
Recently, though, I had the chance to
visit a Bingo hall where the managers have
pens, shaving cream, travel-sized
board games, Halloween candy, tshirts, baseball hats, and more. For a
complete list of items visit OperationGratitude.com/WishList. Pechanga Bingo has also filled the
rest of July with exciting promotions.
Guests with July birthdays are invited
to attend Bingo Birthday Party Sessions on Wednesday, July 13 at
1:00p.m., Friday, July 8 and Friday, July
22 at 6:30p.m. Birthday guests receive
a free paper buy-in. Valued at $15 Matinee or $25 Evening, or $15 or $25
credit toward purchase of a handheld
electronic bingo player. Guests must
present a Pechanga Club card and
valid photo ID.
Sundays are sizzling in July at
Pechanga Bingo. The Sunday Summer
Session with sales at 5:00p.m. and
warm up games at 6:30:00p.m. is designed for the paper player who loves
bingo. Guests can play 30 games with
buy-ins starting at $20. Electronic buyins are also available with a limit of 36
cards.
It’s never too late to try something
new, and that goes for bingo. New
Pechanga Bingo guests receive the
value of a paper buy-in (up to $20). If
you’ve been to Pechanga Bingo before
and bring a friend who is new to the
game, both people receive the value of
a paper buy-in. Make sure to get a
Pechanga Club card first, then head to
Pechanga Bingo and start the fun.
Saturday, July 30, Pechanga guests
can play bingo and enjoy a nightlife atmosphere at Bingo After Dark. The
event gives players a nightclub feel with
cocktails at the full bar, DJ music, dancing and, of course, bingo. Buy-ins start
at $15. Sales begin at 10:00p.m. with
games starting at 11:00p.m.
For buy-ins and information on
Pechanga Bingo, call 1-855-WEBINGO or visit www.Pechanga.com.
proudly followed my instructions. At the
Rampart Casino in Las Vegas, Joanne Farwell has changed everything to reflect
proper grammar. Not only do the callers talk
about winning in X number of calls or
FEWER, all the hall’s printed material,
handouts and posted signs are now correct.
Three cheers for the Rampart! I was first
tipped off to this by a reader whom I had
met some time ago at another Vegas hall.
She told me that I would be surprised if I
went to the Rampart Casino. I was about to
make arrangements for another trip to
Vegas, when Joanne wrote to tell me that
she was performing a miracle at her place.
So far as I know, that Casino is the only one
I have been told about that has converted to
proper English.
I could not be more thrilled! It took a
decade and a half of pleading, but it has paid
off. Joanne, I am very proud of you and
your staff. It is only fair at this point to assure you that I got no reward from the Rampart Casino. I paid for my own Bingo and
my own soft drinks…and didn’t win anything. Just wanted you to know that my
compliments are genuine. I try to be as honest in this column as I can.
Now, I know that some of you reading
this may think that I am too obsessed with
grammar. I was a national journalist for
much of my life and love words. I love
Bingo. You know that. I want Bingo halls to
be wonderful places. So, what’s wrong with
a simple request to fix something that is so
simple to fix.

Cool Cucumbers
Cucumbers are a go-to vegetable for
salads, but there are many ways to incorporate this cool, crunchy vegetable into
everything from appetizers to drinks. Cucumbers are one of the oldest cultivated
crops and have more than 100 different
varieties. It’s believed they were first cultivated in India.
Cucumbers are at their best when
young and tender with a crunchy texture.
They come in many sizes. Some of the
most popular varieties are the Dosakayi,
popular in India for curries and stews;
crunchy “slicers,” used in salads; and
pickles like gherkins, dills and sweet
French cornichons.
The English cucumber is longer and
narrower than the slicer varieties. Its seeds
are much smaller and the skin is thinner.
This type of cucumber may be labeled as
“seedless” or “burpless.” It usually comes
wrapped in plastic and unwaxed. The taste
of English cucumbers also is less bitter,
and some find it almost sweet.
Cucumbers have about 15 calories per
100 grams, and the peel is a good source
of dietary fiber and is a mild diuretic,
which helps to eliminate toxic materials in
the gut. It’s also a great source of potassium and is low in sodium, which helps
with blood pressure and heart rates.
Cucumbers are high in vitamin K,
which helps with bone strength. It also has
established a role in the treatment of
Alzheimer’s disease by limiting neuronal
damage in the brain.
When purchasing cucumbers, select
ones that have a firm texture and a brightgreen color. There shouldn’t be any spots,
cuts or breaks in the skin. A wrinkled,
large or yellowish cucumber means it is
over ripe, lacking nutrients and tough.
Before using or storing, cucumbers
should be washed using cool, clear water
and dried thoroughly to get rid of any surface dirt and pesticide residue. They may
require light scrub at spots where prickles
or dirt is evident
Cucumbers can be stored at room tem-

perature for a day or two, but for best results, store them for up to a week in a plastic bag in your refrigerator’s crisper
drawer.
You can use cucumbers in a variety of
ways. Fresh, cleaned cucumbers can be
enjoyed as they are. You also can cut cucumbers into cubes with the skin and add
them to vegetable or fruit salads. Finely
chopped, fresh cucumber slices are delicious when mixed with yogurt, cumin, coriander, pepper and salt to make cucumber
raita, the popular Indian condiment that
adds a cooling effect to spicy dishes.
English cucumbers are great eaten skin
and all, but with some other varieties you
may want to peel them first (especially
ones with thick skins). If you’re making a
salad with seeded or slicer cucumbers, cut
them lengthwise and use a spoon to scoop
out the seeds.
Cucumbers also can be blended into a
juice and combined with other vegetables
and fruits, like my recipe for Strawberry
Cucumber Lime Coolers. It’s the perfect
way to cool off with cucumbers on a hot
summer day!

Bugle Cruise News
■ A livelier and better bingo cruise!
By Jeffrey Charboneau
Special to the Bingo Bugle
As a person with special needs who
values her independence, Adrian BanksJones of Aberdeen, Maryland, has found
cruise vacationing to be an ideal travel option. “I can’t walk long distances or stand
for long periods of time, so I use a (power
mobility) scooter to get around,” she explains. “I book a room that’s accessible
and use the elevators that have less traffic
and fit my scooter. Once I’m organized, I
can get around the ship very easily.”
To date, Adrian has been on eight
cruise vacations, including one with Carnival Cruise Lines as a participant in last
year’s World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise.
“It was a great experience,” says
Adrian, who will be returning this year to
play in the 2016 Bingo Tournament. “I had
been on one other Bingo cruise with a different company, but didn’t like it nearly as
much. This cruise was livelier, the Bingo
setting was better, and the activities they
offered were way better.”
Aside from the Bingo Tournament and
testing her luck in the ship’s casino,
Adrian’s favorite activity was exploring
the many dining options the host ship offered. “I loved the food,” she says. “I
could go to a buffet, have a quick salad, or
go for an early evening of fine dining—
whatever I felt like.”
On one culinary excursion, Adrian took
in the ship’s Italian restaurant. “They had
meatballs that knocked the socks right off

she was not about to let room service go

Adrian also spent her cruise watching

■ The sweetest day ever
Dear Aunt Bingo,
My kids treated me to the nicest
Mother’s Day surprise this year: dinner
and Bingo. And the best part was that they
didn’t simply give me a gift card to a
casino and wish me a nice time, they actually took me out to dinner at a very nice
restaurant I love, and then went with me
to Bingo and played Bingo with me!
This is something that never, ever happens. All three of my daughters think
Bingo is “lame” and, although I have repeatedly invited them to play Bingo with
me individually and together, not one of
them has ever taken me up on the invitation.
You must understand that I have been
going to weekly Bingo for their entire
lives. They even turned my Bingo playing
into a running joke between them. If one
of them had a difficult test in school or
some other challenging task they had to
perform, inevitably one of them would
console the other by saying: “Well, at least
it’s not Bingo!”
When my Mother’s Day Bingo night
finally came, I was quite impressed that
there were absolutely no Bingo jokes the
entire evening. After a pleasant dinner
filled with lots of laughs and the retelling
of many old family stories, the girls and I
jumped into the car and drove to a highstakes Indian Bingo not far from where we
live.
I had assumed we would be going to
one of the local charity Bingos and so was
very excited to see the casino, where I
rarely play and had not been to in a very
long time. It was a weeknight and not too
terribly busy, so we were able to get seats
at our own table and continue our chatting
without upsetting “the neighbors.”
It was a two-session night that moved
along fairly quickly, and I was amused
watching my girls giggling and trying to
keep up. As I suspected would happen,
after the second or third close call, the
girls stopped their joking around and
began getting quite serious about wanting
to win. When my youngest missed out on
a $500 double Bingo by literally one digit
(she needed 71 and they called 72), I
thought she might require a tranquilizer.
When a man two tables from ours won
$1,000, her eyes almost popped out of her
head as she watched the runner count out
his winnings.
As luck usually has it, the second session ended without any of us getting a
Bingo, and I could see that my daughters
were clearly disappointed. I assumed the
disappointment came from their Mother’s
Day treat being spoiled by Mom not winning Bingo. That quickly changed during
the drive home when they began commiserating between themselves about how
close each of them had come to winning
several jackpots.
We decided to stop for donuts and coffee before calling it a night. The Bingo
discussion continued, and I was mildly
stunned when all three of them hinted at
possibly going back to Bingo another time
and trying again. I just smiled and nodded,
thinking back to all the jokes about Mom’s
Bingo and how lame it was.
We went again the following week. —
Lil B., California, via email
Dear Lil,
What an absolutely adorable story. The
one question I was left wondering is how
old your daughters are. Although whether
they are teens, young adults or middleaged women, it does little to change the
charm of your tale.
Bingo is a wonderful Mother’s Day
gift: More Moms should consider asking
the kids to take them to Bingo on their
special day. What better way is there to be
out of the house with loved ones sitting at
a table enjoying each other’s company and
playing a game together? Plus, if someone
were to win, what a great new story to add
to the family repertoire!
I hope your long-awaited Bingo outing
becomes a new family tradition. —Aunt

TAURUS: Apr. 21-May 21: The full moon on the

remake your basic assumptions about life. In
other words it’s time to embrace a new attitude
that will take you through the rest of the year
with enthusiasm and pluck. Take on a beautifying project, the world can always use more
beauty, and you’re its ambassador.

GEMINI: May 22-June 21: I know you’re not big
on the tiny details of life, especially where
money is concerned – you’d rather be out socializing. But July is the month to focus on finances and work on a plan that will commit you
to increasing your cash flow. Here’s a clue from
Suze Orman: “The key to making money is to
stay invested.” She means investing in you!

CANCER: June 22-July 22: You’re a lighting rod
for inspiration in July. Mid-month finds you
channeling new ideas and making the right social
contacts to advance on the job front. How to best
navigate this wild influx? Remain open to the unknown and the untried. It’s the undiscovered
country that’s calling out to you now. Don’t hesitate. Your instincts will guide the way.

LEO: July 23-Aug. 23: Mercury and Venus put
you in the negotiating spotlight this month. Use
your natural command of authority to stay on

here and there to keep the peace. The full moon
on the 19th reveals the source of a niggling
family problem. Pay special attention to what
people do, and not what they say.

LIBRA: Sept. 24-Oct. 23: It’s time to unplug
from the grind of life and let your inner wisdom
act as a guide. Keep a dream journal by your
bed and track the insights and wisdom that
come your way from the nocturnal world. Anatole France had this advice: “To accomplish

SCORPIO: Oct. 24-Nov. 22: With Mars back in
your sign you’ll want to rally patience to compliment the extra energy and drive that’s been
building since June. You’re like a stallion that’s
been corralled too long, and is ready to run free.

illuminate this destination for you. Take advantage of your courage and jump the fence.

SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 23-Dec. 21: You’re never
short of bright ideas and bubbling optimism, although with Saturn still moving through your
star sign you’ll need to practice steady persistence to make your hopes and dreams come true.
Don’t be frustrated with this condition—life has
something wonderful in store for you, it’s just
coming your way a little slower than you’d like.
Lucky Days: 9-30
Lucky Numbers: 38-47
CAPRICORN: Dec. 22-Jan. 20: Conditions are
rocking on the home front, symptomatic of your
desire to break free from ruts or possibly relocate. Remember you don’t have to literally uproot your life right now, perhaps you’re ready
to let go of habits (or relationships) that have
outgrown their welcome. The full moon on the
19th offers you a way through. Pay attention.
Lucky Days: 3-30
Lucky Numbers: 28-65
AQUARIUS: Jan. 21-Feb. 19: The lines of communication are clearing for you. Use this to your
advantage. Settle any confusion between partners
or family members. Remember, not everyone
thinks in the same unique way as you. Some folks
operate strictly by feelings, and this difference in
style can sometimes annoy you. Walk a mile in
someone else’s shoes. You’ll go far.
Lucky Days: 14-26
Lucky Numbers: 22-66
PISCES: Feb. 20-Mar. 20: Take to heart this wisdom from the poet Simone Weil, “If we go down
into ourselves, we find that we possess exactly
what we desire.” And so the question this month
is: What activity will best support this kind of inner
journeying? I’m guessing it will involve art,
beauty, nature—all of the life experiences that
make life, well, worth living. Don’t deny yourself.

A nameless resort on
Fremont Street
Derek and Greg Stevens, owners of the
D and Golden Gate, have purchased the
downtown slot houses Mermaids and La
Bayou, along with the Girls of Glitter
Gulch topless club, with an eye toward
building a new casino on Fremont Street.
Still in the early planning stages, there are
no details or even a name yet for the new
resort. And while it might be assumed that
the shuttered Las Vegas Club, also owned
by the Stevens’, would be the anchor for
the plan, the brothers say no, indicating
that they’ll build the new resort from the
ground up. La Bayou is located on the opposite side of the commons from the other
acquisitions, possibly pointing to an expansion of the Golden Gate. Mermaids, La
Bayou, and the Girls of Glitter Gulch will
all close on June 27.
Almost a year after its closing, a
timetable has finally been released for the
razing of the Riviera. Following a preliminary manual demolition of the lower-rise
buildings (via bulldozers and a wrecking
ball), the Monte Carlo and Monaco hotel
towers will be knocked down in separate
implosions. The first was in June, followed
by a second in August, though the exact
date haven’t been announced. The two-part
exit is required because of the sprawling
nature of the resort. The cleared space will
be used to host outdoor events until building begins on an extension of the Convention Center that will reach out to the Strip.
The price tag for the demolition is being
reported at $42 million. Of course, this all
assumes that it happens at all. In a funky
twist, a petition has been filed by a local
college student to block the demolition of
the Riviera. Ostensibly precipitated by a
desire to preserve the “historic” site, the
petition would need to gather more than
50,000 signatures by July 1 in order to
move to the next stage and at least delay
the demolition.
Paradise Park
Project Neon
Steve Wynn has announced plans to
build a $1.5 billion “lake resort” behind
Wynn Las Vegas and Encore on land that
used to be the Desert Inn golf course. Tentatively dubbed Paradise Park, the casino
resort will feature a 1,000-room tower and
a 38-acre lagoon that will accommodate
real water skiing, paddle boarding, and
parasailing, and be surrounded by white-
The Nevada Department of Transportation is set to begin work on “Project
Neon,” a $1 billion overhaul of the I-15
roadway snarl near downtown known as
the “Spaghetti Bowl.” While the finished
project is expected to reduce travel delays
by 28%, there’ll be a price to pay in associated traffic disruptions until its conclusion in 2019.
