The Urban Male Leadership Program (UMLP) at Lehman College is dedicated to the progressive development and ultimate success of all Lehman College students with an emphasis on Black and Latino males in higher education. When students participate in this energetic program they succeed. Students strengthen their academic skills, and develop personally and professionally. Students are able to strengthen their “Passport to Success” by participating within UMLP Circle of Support mentoring, Academic Intervention and Success counseling and workshops, as well as leadership and personal development workshops, and the annual Leadership Retreat. Those who utilize these resources offered by the UMLP are Inducted into the program as UMLP Outreach Ambassadors at the Annual Induction and Awards Ceremony. To start participating in this exciting initiative, please stop by the UMLP office located in the Old Gym Building, Suite 302. The UMLP is committed to “Bringing forth greatness…one student at a time.” Have a purposeful and rewarding semester. Michael A. Fall 2016 Semester Classes Begins I was inducted into the Urban Male Leadership Program In May 2015. While on campus, I was a CUNY Service Corps Member, Co-Chair of the Student Success Committee, and President/Founder of the Urban Leaders Golf Club. I plan to pursue a Master’s Degree in Finance at Lehman College, starting in the Spring Semester of 2017. The Urban Male Leadership Program has provided me with the training, resources, and a network that has helped me complete my Bachelor’s degree, get involved with positive people, and find work I have a true passion doing. I am grateful to the Director and staff of the program for their guidance and empathy. I look forward to being an active UMLP Alumni member. 10 Years & Beyond… Developing the Next Generations of Leaders Jermaine Wright University Director CUNY Black Male Initiative On behalf of the entire City University of New York Black Male Initiative (CUNY BMI) community, it is my pleasure to welcome Dr. José Cruz to Lehman College as its third president. Established in 2005 CUNY BMI, through its focus on one of the most severely underrepresented populations in higher education, represents one expression of CUNY’s most significant commitments to access and diversity. With the generous support of consecutive grants from the New York City Council, CUNY BMI funds projects throughout the university. CUNY BMI has grown from 15 projects to over 30 projects in 2016 and works in six strategic areas to reach its overall goals of increasing enrollment of students from demographic groups severely underrepresented in higher education and providing academic and cultural supports to assist program participants in successfully completing their undergraduate course of study and graduating. Diversity Recruitment utilizes strategies that increase enrollment of underrepresented students, particularly males. Culturally Competent Peer-to-Peer Mentoring includes a Peer-to-Peer mentoring model where high performing upper classmen are trained to be peer mentors to assist lower classmen. Academic Enhancements provide an additional layer of academic support through tutoring and supplemental academic programs. Socioemotional Programming includes activities that assist CUNY BMI participants in acquiring and effectively applying the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions. Institutional Commitment involves developing relationships with senior leaders as stakeholders within the institution to assist in securing space and supplemental financial support for the BMI project. Lastly, each BMI project has an Advisory Committee to assist in development of the project, provide and/or garner resources for the project, and serve as ambassadors for the project. Dr. James Jervis, Keynote Speaker Andres Torres, Former Lehman College President Ricardo R. Fernandez, Master of Ceremony Christopher Williams-Rivera, Dr. Milton Santiago and UMLP Director Michael A. Deas during the UMLP Hispanic Heritage Month Tribute Event held October 7, 2015 SEPTEMBER 2016 SUN MON WED The UMLP has had such a positive impact on my life academically and personally. Since joining in 2014 and induction in May 2015, I noticed a significant change. I had the confidence to no longer follow but lead. I am so honored to be Urban Female Leader of the Year. I could have never foreseen this great honor. I felt like I accomplished so much thus far, but I also realize that I must continue being a role model for young women within the program. I would like to thank Professor Deas and the entire Urban Male Leadership Program staff for igniting the leader within. As you proceed on your academic journey, look back, but only briefly to see how far you have come. The Urban Male Leadership program is prepared to help you meet whatever challenges you face as you work towards graduation. The faculty, administration, staff and your fellow students are available and eager to assist you with academic and other issues including, but not limited to tutoring, advising, financial aid, career/personal counseling and healthcare services, as well as helping you negotiate the administrative regulations and structure of the College. We all work together to help create a supportive and dynamic learning experience at the college. Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th to October 15th) provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Also, the privilege to celebrate and acknowledge the many inspiring achievements Hispanics have accomplished academically, professionally and in leadership. Commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the importance of remembering your roots and to share with others the richness and diversity of the various Latin American Cultures. “Remember that no one succeeds alone.
