Figure Skates and Hockey skates are allowed through Basic 8. We discourage the expandable blade skates. Skates should be fit with a thin sock and skater’s ankles should not be falling over in new or used skates. Ankle support is very important. Tie skates tight in the foot bed from top of toe to beginning of ankle, then not as tight at the top of the ankle. Helmets are required for all skaters ages 3-5 years old. Ski or sport helmet is best. Mittens or gloves required. Dress in warm layers. We discourage snow pants. Skate blades should be dried with a towel after each use and covered in a terry cloth cover or towel between skating sessions. Hard guards should be purchased to cover blades while walking around on the rink mats, etc. Skates should be sharpened approximately every 22 hours of use and if skates have been in storage since last winter. New skates also need to be sharpened. Program Benefits Skaters who participate in the North Atlantic Figure Skating Club (NAFSC) Basic Skills Program will learn new and exciting maneuvers and will be tested as they progress through the program. Registered skaters will receive an official U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills membership card and membership year patch, a brightly colored record book with stickers to track progress through the program’s lessons, sport accident insurance, general information about ice skating, and a certificate and badge or a skills report card and ribbon at the end of each session.
