the proposal
Creative ways to pop the big question
Have you found the woman you want to
spend the rest of your life with?
The first step in making a lifelong commitment is popping the question. Need an idea for
proposing in a different way?
Here are some suggestions:
¤Take her to a fancy restaurant. When it’s
time for dessert, get the waiter to deliver the
dessert with flowers and a special note
attached. Then take out the engagement ring
and propose.
¤Take her on a walk in a park or at the
beach. Stop at an area where you previously
spelled out “will you marry me?” in rocks or
seashells. Immediately get down on your knee
and propose.
¤Place an ad on the radio or in the newspaper and follow up with a personal proposal.
¤Videotape yourself asking her to marry
you. After a romantic meal that you cooked or
had catered, say you want to watch an old
videotape of yours. Follow up by giving her the
ring.
¤While on an airplane together, ask the
pilot to deliver your “will you marry me”
announcement aboard the plane once you are
airborne. Then give her the ring.
¤Take her to a Chinese restaurant and
when it comes time for the fortune cookie, let
her open up a special one that contains an
engagement ring and a proposal.
¤Have a scavenger hunt with clues. The last
clue ends up with you proposing to her.
¤If both of you like the outdoors, propose to
her on the summit of a mountain or next to a
serene body of water.
¤For a fairytale engagement, propose to her
at Walt Disney World near Cinderella’s castle
or somewhere similar.
¤If it is her birthday or another special
occasion, wrap the ring in consecutively larger
boxes. When she opens the final box, propose.
¤If it is December, ask her to help you decorate your Christmas tree. Hand her an ornament with an engagement ring attached.
¤At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s
Eve, have the engagement ring ready and ask
her to marry you.
¤Take her on a horsedrawn carriage ride
and pop the question.
¤Wrap the diamond engagement ring
around the base of a candle then have her
light the candles before a very romantic dinner
for two.
For a simple service, marry at local city hall
If you don’t want a formal
church wedding, you can
marry at city hall in a simple
service.
First, decide on a date.
Then call city hall and ask to
schedule your marriage ceremony. They can usually fit
you in within a few days.
Find out how many guests
you’re allowed to bring.
Sometimes there may be a
limit. Also, ask if there are
any special requirements.
Be sure to allow enough
time to have a valid marriage
license ready before the
event.
Remember to take the
license with you to city hall.
This is important because
you can’t be married without
it.
Take proof of your identification, such as a birth certificate or driver’s license, in
case you need it.
Consider incorporating tradition into your ceremony by
including something old,
something new, something
borrowed and something
blue.
Purchase wedding bands to
exchange during the vows.
And select a special outfit for
each of you.
Lastly, take a camera and
have someone take pictures
of your special day.
You’ve got a lot on
your plate planning a
wedding. Good thing
you don’t have to
worry about your
guests finding
comfortable,
affordable rooms.
You see, 98 out of
100 of our guests say
they’d stay with us
again. That makes for
a lot of happy
wedding guests.

the budget
Wedding should not put you in the red
The question has been asked and a “yes”
answer given.
Now it’s time to start planning the wedding.
The best way to work out a wedding budget is to sit down with pencil, paper and a
calculator to figure out what you really want
and can afford.
You should start by prioritizing what’s
important to you. You may decide that you
want to have an amazing photographer, but
you’re happy to hunt for a bargain on the
dress.
If you’re having a small wedding, your
catering bill won’t be as big as big as a percentage of the budget.
You can adjust your budget numbers to
reflect your priorities.
You can save money many ways. Start by
looking through the budget and crossing off
anything that you don’t need.
And don’t be afraid to ask recently married friends who they used and what they
paid.
Here are some money-saving tips:
¤Trim your wedding guest list. Each time
you add a name to your invitation list,
you’re increasing your budget significantly.
It’s not just the catering costs, but also the
extra centerpieces, favors, rentals, etc.
Don’t invite anyone you haven’t talked to
in five years. Don’t feel obligated to let sin-
gle people bring a date.
Avoid feeling pressured to invite all your
co-workers. And you don’t have to let friends
bring children.
¤Invitations. Find a good printer. The
invitation is the first thing guests see that’s
connected to your wedding, so they should
look nice, but you don’t have to go overboard.
People will remember the event, not the
invitation.
You can forgo the inner envelope and blotter paper, which are leftover from times
when ink needed time to dry and people
wanted a pristine envelope.
Rather than having a reply card, ask
guests to reply online or by phone. Not only
will you save money from the printer bill,
but you will also reduce your postage
expense.
¤Save money on church decorations. For
religious weddings, consider having it near a
major holiday.
The church will already be decorated, saving you lots of money on flowers.
On other days, look for simplicity. A candlelight ceremony can be romantic, gorgeous
and inexpensive.
¤Reception venue. Saturday night is the
most sought-after time. If you can do a Friday night, Saturday morning or afternoon or
Sunday reception, you’ll not only save money, but you may have more choice of dates.
¤Transportation. Consider finding a
friend with a nice car and using it.
¤Flowers. If there’s time, have a friend
get them at the local greenmarket on wedding morning and set them up at the ceremony and reception sites yourself, with the
help of family and friends.
¤Caterer. Along with the menu, discuss
the cost of service, liquor, wedding cake,
overtime and insurance when you meet with
prospective caterers.
Consider that a brunch, luncheon or hors
d’oeuvres reception costs less than a dinner.
¤Music. DJs tend to be less expensive
than live bands.
¤Do it yourself. Throw a pitch-in party
where guests help you assemble favors and
make invitations, centerpieces and other
homemade items.
WEDDING FUN FACT: Bad
weather on the way to the wedding is believed to signify
unhappiness in the marriage.
Traditionally, it is believed
that cloudy skies and wind en
route to the wedding will
result in a stormy marriage.
However, if there is snow on the way to
the wedding, that is a sign of fertility and
prosperity.

the cake
Dream up your own sweet concoction
A delicious part of the reception
is the wedding cake. Today, couples are limited only by their creativity.
How do you go about finding a
good baker to make your
cake?
Word of mouth is the best
way. Ask everyone — family,
friends, neighbors, co-workers, the reception site coordinator, the photographer,
the florist. They may have
some good suggestions for
you.
Make appointments
with several different
bakers. The baker will
need to know approximately how many people you
are expecting and the colors of
your wedding.
Look through bridal books and
cake magazines and cut out pictures of the types of cakes you
like. Take them when you meet
with your baker.
Some questions to ask potential
bakers are:
¤Can I see photos of previous
wedding cakes you have designed?
This is essential. If the baker
won’t show you photographs, look
elsewhere.
¤Can I have a taste test? Many
small bakers won’t have samples
on hand for you to taste. If your
baker doesn’t have any for
you to taste at the time of
your visit, ask if the baker
will be hosting any “cake
tastings” in the near future.
¤Do you charge extra
for anything such as special fillings or icings, delivery, set-up, etc.? Extra
charges for these items
are pretty standard, but
you need to know up
front for the sake of
your budget.
¤Will you decorate the
cake with fresh or silk flowers or
will you work with my florist?
¤Unless the baker’s floral decorating skills are excellent, ask
your baker if your florist can handle silk or fresh flower decorations.
¤How far in advance will the
cake be prepared? If the cake is
being prepared well in advance
and frozen, ask the baker how
long it will take the cake to thaw.
The color of the cake is very
important. Be sure you take
swatches of the bridal dresses
with you and if possible, photographs of the flowers you
have chosen.
This way, the cake
designer can take an ordinary white cake and decorate it with flowers,
fresh fruit, colorful icing
or use colored frosting
such as brown, yellow,
orange, pink or whatever color you like. Just
imagine offering your
guests a lemon cake with yellow
icing, accented with fresh fruit
and chocolate mousse.
After choosing the flavor, color,
size and shape of your wedding
cake, you need to determine what
level of involvement the cake
designer will have.
For example, for some receptions where the wedding cake is
the only dessert served, you might
consider having them serve the
guests.
On the other hand, if you will be
having multiple desserts and are
on a budget, then you could ask a

roses, carnations and pansies. These flowers can
be made into cascade designs or other styles.

Using fresh flowers to decorate your cake
looks great and need not cost a fortune.

the gown
Pick the dress that’s perfect for you
Brides who wear gowns with fabric tiered
skirts will add a touch of whimsy to their wedding.
Another hot look for wedding gowns is the
sweetheart neckline. A sweetheart neckline is
shaped like the top of a heart — a detail that
is inherently charming and romantic. The
sweetheart neckline adds something different
to the bodice of wedding gowns because it gives
a curvy and interesting shape.
Sweetheart necklines can be complimented
by almost any type of sleeve, but on the wedding runway, they are most often paired with
sleeveless gowns and A-line or flared skirts.
For brides that want to give their wedding
gown a romantic flourish, a sweetheart neckline is just the thing.
Brides are also making a fashion statement
with fabric. Instead of a strong prevalence of
beading, rhinestones or other accents, fabric is
the method du jour for adding detail to wedding gowns. Gowns now have a wide range of
fabric embellishments, from delicate draping to
more dramatic ruffles and fabric flowers. Ruffles, ribbon, ruching, gathering, pleats, fabric
flowers and draping are all popular details for
wedding gowns.
As the bride at your wedding, you are the
star of the show and all eyes will be on you.
Your wedding gown is a reflection of your personal style so create a modern look by choosing
a wedding gown that has the latest updates.

You’ve set the date for your big day and have
begun planning the wedding.
One of the most important things to a bride is
her gown. She wants to look stylish and chic.
Trends change from year to year. One of the
biggest trends in wedding gowns is the flowing
silhouette.
These gowns have loose billowy skirts with
flowing fabric that create a dreamy quality.
Many of the wedding gowns that have flowing
silhouettes also feature a dropwaist, which creates the illusion of a longer torso.
These gowns are not only beautiful and elegant, they are also very comfortable. Brides
who choose wedding gowns with flowing silhouettes will be perfectly dressed for a destination wedding, an outdoor wedding or a casual
affair.
Another popular style is the fit and flare
gown. Fitted bodices with flared skirts are
making a comeback in wedding gowns.
Unlike the trends of past seasons, wedding
gown fashions have moved away from the ballgown look of a fitted bodice with a full rounded
skirt and instead are bringing a fresh look
with a fitted bodice and skirt with a flared
hemline.
Mermaid hemlines, bubble skirts and trumpet skirts are all prevalent in wedding gown
designers’ latest collections. Tiered skirts are
another fresh look and featured tiers of lace,
chiffon and other lightweight fabrics.

Groom will stand out with the right look
Although the bride will definitely be the center of attention on
her wedding day, the groom wants
to look his best, too.
Here is help.
Start early and you’ll not only
save yourself some stress, you’ll
reduce your chances of overpaying
— or even worse, settling for
something unfabulous.
In this case, early means four or
five months before your wedding.
Decide whether to rent or buy, and
check out different styles. Make
your final decision three or four
months before the big day.
Ask your bride for her opinion.
Gone are the days when grooms
surprise their brides with funky
or frumpy formalwear. Before you
commit to any tux, talk to the
bride early on so that you can
coordinate your wedding looks.
The time and location of your
wedding — as well as the size of
your guest list — will affect your
choice of attire. These things determine the formality of your affair,
and you won’t want to make the
faux pas of wearing ultra-formal formalwear to an informal event, especially when it’s your wedding.
Different types of weddings call
for different types of formalwear.
The clothing you wear will depend
largely on the time and location of
your event, the size of the guest
list and the bride’s attire. Use
these general guidelines to match
your look to the mood of your wedding.
Semiformal, daytime
Both the groom and his groomsmen should skip the tuxes and opt
for suits (navy or charcoal are
great year-round; reserve khaki or
white for warm seasons). Choose a
white shirt worn either with or
without a tie.
Semiformal, evening
Go with a dark tuxedo and bow
tie, worn with a cummerbund or
vest. Another option is a nice dark
suit. Either way, the shirt should
be white with a wing or turneddown collar.
For summer weddings or tropical locales, white dinner jackets
are an acceptable option.
Formal, daytime
There are lots of choices: Tuxedos, tailcoats and gray strollers
are all appropriate. Match them
with a white spread-collar shirt, a
vest to match your coat, an ascot
or a regular necktie, and a pocket
square if you’re feeling particularly dapper.
Formal, evening
It’s time to break out the blacktie. You’ll be wearing a classic
black tuxedo with a white wing or
spread-collar shirt, black bow tie,
and matching vest or cummerbund.
Formal four-in-hand ties (aka
fancy takes on the standard necktie) are a more contemporary
option for the fashion-forward
groom. And if your wedding falls
during the summer, feel free to
don a white dinner jacket with
formal trousers.
Ultraformal, daytime
Think cutaway coat, gray
striped trousers, gray vest, ascot,
and black shoes. If you want to go
all out, you can also add a top hat,
spats, and gray gloves.
Ultraformal, evening
Break out the white tie. That
means a black tailcoat, black
trousers, white pique wing-collared shirt, black vest or cummerbund, and white bow tie.

the tuxedo
Give the groom the right look
Continued from 9
Look for the best tux cut for your
body type.
Tall and thin
You can wear just about anything, from contemporary styles —
like single-breasted four-button
jackets — to a more classic, doublebreasted tuxedo with broad shoulders.
If you’re extremely thin and want
to look bulkier, opt for the latter; it
will pad your chest slightly and fill
out your torso. One caveat: Make
sure your trouser legs and jacket
arms are long enough.
Tall and husky, muscular
Go for a smooth, clean look without a lot of frills. A shawl collar (a
more rounded lapel than a peak
collar) will create an elegant line
that will make you seem less bulky.
Avoid double-breasted jackets
and pleated shirts, which add volume. If you have a large waist, consider wearing a vest instead of a
cummerbund, since cummerbunds
draw attention to the waist, while
vests conceal girth.
Keep in mind that black has a
slimming effect, which makes the
classic tux perfect for you. You’ll
probably find that white suits,
light-colored suits (such as tan or
seersucker), morning suits and tails
are not your most flattering looks.
And if you’re extremely muscular,
be aware of sizing, especially
around your neck. You don’t want
to feel like your bow tie is strangling you.
Short and slim
Avoid styles that look too large
on your frame. Steer clear of double-breasted jackets. Instead, go for
a two- or three-button jacket with a
low-button stance (it elongates the
body), paired with classic tuxedo
pants or pleated trousers.
If you want to look a bit broader,
ask your tailor for extra shoulder
padding. When sizing your tux or
suit, make sure everything fits precisely so you don't end up swimming in yards of extra material.
Short and broad
Stick with a single-breasted jacket. Go for a classic two- or one-button jacket with a low-button stance
and a shawl collar, which will keep
your look streamlined and slim.
Also, choose a jacket with a natural shoulder line, and avoid the
WEDDING
FUN FACT:
more broad European styles. If you
have a heavy waist, choose a vest
rather than a cummerbund to draw
attention away from your waistline
and up toward your face.
And once again, remember that
black has a slimming effect, which
makes the classic tux perfect for
you. When it comes to sizing, make
sure your jacket and trousers fit
well. When you button your jacket,
the material near the buttons
shouldn’t pull. Your trousers should
fit comfortably around your waist.
Whether you rent or buy, make
sure that your formalwear provider
gives you a proper fitting and
knows how to measure your
inseam, waist, and jacket size. Pay
attention not only to what looks
good but also to what feels good.
Fabrics these days are more
breathable than in years past, and
it’s possible to achieve the look you
want and wear a tux that moves
with you instead of one that weighs
you down.
Keeping all this in mind, the
groom should stand out at the wedding, too.
(Information from The Knot.)
For centuries
the month of
June has
been the most
popular
choice for
weddings, but
the original
reason for having
it then might just
surprise you.
During the 1400s
and1500s, May was
the month in which
the “annual bath”
occurred.
Back in those
times, people
were only able to
bathe thoroughly once each
year.
Since the over-all population was smelling relatively
fresh in June, it was a good
time to hold a special event
like a wedding.
Furthermore, the month of
June is also named after the
goddess Juno.
She was the Roman counterpart to Hera, the goddess
of the hearth and home and
the patron of wives.

the ring
Pick the perfect ring for your special day
He has decided he cannot live without you
and wants to marry you. After he pops the
question, you need to go shopping for wedding
rings.
What kind do you get? What do you need to
look for in a ring? How much should you
spend?
These are all important questions to consider when buying a ring.
The first thing to do is set a budget. A general guide is to set aside 3 percent of your wedding budget for rings.
The price will vary depending on what metal
you choose and if you want extras like diamonds or custom embellishments.
Rings come in several different materials.
The most common for wedding rings are gold,
white gold, platinum and titanium. Gold, white
gold and platinum are traditional, but titanium can be a good substitute if you’re allergic
to certain metals or if you’re looking for a lower-priced alternative.
Different metals will also complement your
skin tone differently. Try on wedding rings in a
range of materials so you can see which metal
looks best on you.
When you first go shopping for the ring,
check out a couple different stores before buying. Compare selection and price at a few
stores and determine which has the right ring
for you.
Start shopping for your wedding rings at

Everyone shares expenses In what order do
Today there are no hard
rules for who pays for what.
Because a wedding is expensive, the couple, the bride’s
family and the groom’s family
all share expenses.
The key is to meet early in
the planning process to set a
realistic budget and determine
who will be responsible for
which expenses. This will prevent misunderstandings or
hard feelings later on.
Here is a guide to help:

¤A wedding gift for the

¤The marriage license.
¤Gifts for the best man and

¤Flowers: The bride’s bouquet and going-away corsage,

the men in the wedding party.
¤Fee for clergy.
¤The honeymoon.
¤Optional: bachelor dinner.
The bride’s family:
¤The entire cost of the
reception: Food, wedding cake,
beverages, gratuities for the
bartenders and waiters, decorations, music and flowers.
¤A wedding gift for the couple.

your guests sit?
Who sits where at your ceremony? Here
are some guidelines to help you with this
detail.
Since your ushers will escort guests to
their seats, it’s not necessary to have
assigned seating.
However, you will want to section off a
reserved seating area in front for your
immediate families.
Traditionally in church weddings, the
bride’s parents sit in the front row on the
left side, along with her grandparents
and siblings.
If the bride’s parents are divorced and
prefer to sit separately, the mother and
her husband might sit in the front row
while the father and his wife sit in the
second row.
Other special relatives may sit in the
second and third rows.
The groom’s family is seated in the
same manner, but on the right side of the
room. (At Jewish ceremonies, all the seating is reversed.)
An usher should offer a female guest
his right arm to escort her to her seat.
Male wedding guests may simply be led
to their seats.
When a number of wedding guests
arrive at once, seat the eldest ones first.

Show off your style with the invitations
Your personality and individual style show
in every detail of your wedding event, from the
dress, the flowers and the cake right down to
the favors.
And your wedding invitations will be the one
piece of correspondence responsible for setting
the mood for this entire event.
Your invitation designer can work with you
to create an invitation masterpiece with personal touches that will make it uniquely yours.
Don’t forget to carry this theme through to
your insert cards, matching Website, wedding
programs, and even your thank you notes.
Make every detail count.
Depending on the formality, time, and hosting of your wedding, you will see there are a
variety of ways to word your invitation.
The formal wedding invitation includes the
invitation, an outside envelope, a reception
card, an RSVP card, an RSVP envelope, directions to the church and reception, information
on accommodations for out-of-town guests and
thank you cards.
Formal invitations give you a line to write in
the guest name, are very plain and are
engraved or have raised print (called thermograph).
Most formals also have a raised border and
black ink type.
Addressing each card to a guest can be a
pain; however, it adds a person touch. The
paper is very plain with little to no detail and

vary. Informal invitations do not have a line to
write in the guest name and are usually not in
engraved or have raised print.
Informal invitations are used to reflect the
couple personalities, styles, or theme of the
wedding.
There are many styles to choose from by
checking with experienced wedding stationery
companies under the invitation section in your
phone book or by using your own unique ideas
and others’ ideas to design them yourself.

though engraved print is nice, use thermograph print if you are on a budget.
Using thermograph instead of engraved

Tips on sending invitations
¤Gather your lists of invitees before you
order the invitations.
¤Order at least 25 more invitations and
envelopes than you think you will need to cover mistakes in addressing or re-mailing to a
current address and to cover last-minute must
haves. It’s more expensive to re-order than to
order more than you need at the beginning.
¤Type/print the list of names with the
appropriate titles: Mr., Mrs., Dr., Ms., Reverend, Captain, Lieutenant, Rabbi, Fr.,
Messrs., Honorable, etc.
¤If a widow: Mrs. John Smith; If divorced:
Mrs. Susan Smith.
¤ For children over 18 and living at home,
they receive their own invitation or are listed separately on their parents’: Mr. and Mrs.
John Cooksen, Ms. Melissa Rodgers.

For the bride
You have set the date for your

Now you need to give serious

leading up to the big day.
Here is a beauty calendar:

color is applied every six weeks, a
bride needs to decide on a shade
at least three to six months ahead.
Allow yourself time to become
accustomed to the new look or correct any mistake.
¤Use an exfoliating facial scrub
twice a week to slough off dead
skin for a healthy glow.
And try a hydrating mask once
a week for a great home facial.
¤If you’re going to change your
haircut, do it at least three
months before the wedding.
And don’t try something drastically new just before the date
unless you’re very sure you want
that style.

A MOMENT CAPTURED,
A MEMORY CHERISHED
Most brides start planning for
their big day months, if not
years, in advance. They grow
their hair out or they cut it short.
They wax their legs and bleach
their teeth. They get weekly
manicures and pedicures for
months before the wedding just
to insure that everything will be
perfect.
No stone is left unturned. Or is
it?
What about him? You know,
that guy sitting next to the bride.
He’s getting married, too.
And whether he says anything
or not, he probably wants to look
his best for his wedding.
So here are some things you
can both do to make him feel
great for his big day:
¤Get him a manicure. The fact
is, real men do get manicures.
You can assure him that they
don’t put polish on men’s fingers,
but they do get all the dry skin
and ragged cuticles taken care of.
This is especially important if
your man works with his hands
Kelly Twiggs Dawson
on a daily basis as his hands are
probably callused and rough.
He’ll be shaking hands all day.
¤Have him get a massage. You
can give him one yourself or the
two of you can go somewhere
together to have them done.
This isn’t something that most
men think to do on their own.
Men have their own stresses
when it comes to planning a wedding. They have their own emotions to work through as the big
day approaches.
¤Involve him in some of your
healthy activities and eating
habits. Even if your groom-to-be
is in great shape already, going
for walks together and eating
healthy meals before the wedding will have real benefits.
If you’re trying to lose some
weight or get in shape, having
his support will be invaluable.
Plus the time spent going for
walks and getting outdoors will
give the two of you a chance to

Don’t forget about license and attendants
You can’t marry without a license Gifts your groomsmen
He has popped the question and she has
accepted. A date has been set for the big
day.
Now what?
Before any couple can tie the knot, they
need one very important piece of paper —
the marriage license.
In Wayne County, bridal couples should
go to the register of deeds office in the
courthouse to obtain the license. It will
cost $50 and payment must be made by
cash or check only.
Register of Deeds Lois J. Mooring said
that both the bride and the groom have to
go at the same time to apply for the marriage license.
Everyone applying for a license will
need their Social Security card or something with the Social Security number and
their name printed on it and a stateissued picture identification.
Those over 21 can use their driver’s
license as identification, said Ms. Mooring.
She said those 18 to 21 will need to take
an identification card such as a driver’s
license or military identification card and
a certified copy of their birth certificate.
Those under 18 will need to have more
identification and should go to the register
of deeds office for a list of acceptable documents.
Anyone who has been divorced less than
30 days will have to take a copy of his or
her divorce papers when applying for the
marriage license. If a person has been
divorced a month or longer, he will just
need to know the month and year of the
divorce, according to Ms. Mooring.
The marriage license is good not only in
Wayne County, but anywhere in North
Carolina. It’s good for up to 60 days from
the date it was issued.
Ms. Mooring said it will take the couple
about 30 minutes to fill out paperwork
and get the license. “And there’s no waiting period; they can go straight to the
magistrate’s office and use the license as
soon as they get it,” she said.
Couples may apply for a marriage
license Monday through Friday between 8
a.m. and 4 p.m.
For questions, the phone number is 7311449.
License requirements may also be found
on the Internet. Go to www.waynegov.com
and click on “departments.” Go to the register of deeds office and click on “marriage
license.”

Eat a small snack before you go to a party, avoid fried
foods, drink water and share a dessert with a friend.
2 weeks ahead
¤If you’re considering perming your hair before the wedding, do it now so your stylist can create at look you’ll like
and the perm has time to “relax.”
¤To be safe, have a facial during this time as well. You
can’t predict how your skin will react.
1 week ahead
¤Take your headpiece to the salon and have your stylist
experiment with your hair once before the actual event.
¤Prime your skin before you apply makeup.
Since stress dehydrates skin and can cause breakouts, it
pays to pamper yourself, especially during the hectic wedding planning.
Treat yourself to a purifying mask, a gentle scrub and a
good moisturizer.
1 day ahead
¤Have your nails manicured the day before the wedding.
On your wedding day, apply a protective top coat.

WEDDING FUN FACT:
According to an old legend, the
month in which you marry may
have some bearing on the fate of the marriage:
Married when the year is new, he’ll be loving, kind and true.
When February birds do mate, you wed nor
dread your fate.
If you wed when March winds blow, joy
and sorrow both you’ll know.
Marry in April when you can, joy for Maiden and for Man.
Marry in the month of May, and you’ll
on his wedding day.
¤Send him to a barbershop for a professional shave. It’s as close as most
men will get to a spa treatment. A good
barber will use hot towels and lotions to
make his face smooth and soft.
These suggestions will make your
groom feel and look extra special on the
big day.

surely rue the day.
Marry when June roses grow, over land
and sea you will go.
Those who in July do wed, must labor for
their daily bred.
Whoever wed in August be, many a change
is sure to see.
Marry in September’s shrine, your living
will be rich and fine;
If in October you do marry, love will come
but riches tarry.
If you wed in bleak November, only joys
will come, remember.
When December snows fall fast, marry and
true love will last.

the music
Set the mood of wedding with music
At the ceremony
At the reception
Bonny- Bliss Collection
— light jazz for the cocktail hour,
swing for after dinner.
¤Delivery: Basically, you have
two choices: Band or DJ. For stylishness, excitement and great
sound, it’s hard to beat a live band.
On the other hand, DJs make a
pretty good case for themselves in
terms of versatility, consistency and
cost.
Your budget or setting may make
this decision for you. If the decision
is yours, try to weigh all the musical elements of the reception when
making your choice — including
special dances, guest requests and
the need for an emcee.
When shopping for bands or DJs,
be sure to see them in action at
another event. Look for style points,
quality of sound, ease with equipment and interaction with the
crowd.
Plan to finalize arrangements at
least six to nine months in advance
and even further ahead if your
favorite choice is in high demand.

Music is the lifeblood of a reception. Without it, conversation dries
up, mingling halts and dancing is
an impossibility.
When planning the tunes for
your party, consider three primary
issues: Style, range and delivery.
¤Style: Even the most agreeable
person has strong opinions about
music, and the average engaged
couple is no exception. Is your
favorite genre big band, country,
classical, bluegrass or classic rock?
Does nothing move you like reggae?
Choose music that reflects your
personal tastes and party preferences, but don’t forget your guests.
Everyone will have more fun if the
style is at least a little eclectic.
¤Range: If you’re like most couples, you imagine a certain kind of
soundtrack for the receiving line
and a different one altogether for
when the dance floor gets hopping.
Whatever style you choose, be
sure there’s range within it — from
slow and easy to really jumping.
Alternately, choose different genres
for different parts of the celebration
Alfred Angelo-Bridal Plus
This piece should have a tempo
which allows your bridesmaids and
groomsmen to walk down the aisle
at a measured pace and heightens
the suspense for the wedding guests
as they wait to see the bride.
When choosing wedding music,
keep in mind how the piece be
played. A piece that is perfect in full
orchestral form may not have the
same presence if performed by an
organist.
As soon as the bride appears at
the top of the aisle, the wedding
music should switch to the piece you
have chosen for the bride’s entrance.
This is the moment that you, and
all your guests have been waiting
for.
Your wedding music should be
dramatic and sweeping.
After you are pronounced husband and wife, your recessional will
begin. This is the moment in which
you and your new spouse walk
down the aisle. You should choose
wedding music that is joyous and
conveys your feelings of excitement
and happiness.
The wedding music you choose for
your ceremony will set the tone for
your entire wedding. Remember to
ask your site what types of wedding
music it allows — many churches
do not allow secular music to be
played and have very strict rules
about what may be used.
Consult with the musical director
of your facility to be sure you create
a program which is suitable and
also suits your own style.
During your prelude, you will
want to use wedding music which is
not obtrusive. This will be played
while your guests are arriving and
taking their seats. Start this music
as early as possible so that wedding
music is playing when the first
guests arrive.
While important family members,
such as the mother-of-the-bride, are
being ushered to their seats, you
will need to choose a pre-processional.
When the wedding party appears
at the top of the aisle, the wedding
music should switch from the preprocessional to the processional.

survival tips
Be prepared and alleviate that tension
Even though you’ve
planned for everything
to go perfectly, you never
know what might happen on your big day.
That’s why it’s a good
idea to assemble a survival kit beforehand so
you’ll be prepared.
Here’s what you
need:
¤antacid
¤aspirin
¤bobby pins
¤clear nail polish
¤emery board
¤extra earring backs
¤extra pair of stockings
¤eye drops
¤hairspray
¤hair mousse
¤needle and thread

Here’s how to relieve your stress
When you’re stressed out about your wedding, who has the time or the money to go to
a spa? You need stress relief and you need it
now.
Here are some things you can do to chill
out.
¤Deep breathing. Lie down on the floor or
a quiet place and close your eyes. Inhale
deeply through your nose, letting air flow
into your stomach area.
Picture your body filling with peace as you
inhale and the stress flowing out of you as
you exhale deeply. Let your mind clear, as
you focus on your body filling with air.
Repeat until your breathing is slow and
relaxed.
¤Stretching. You’ve probably noticed your
body getting crunched up. Perhaps you have
aches or tension headaches. These are all
signs of your body holding onto that stress.
Take time to stretch, breathing deeply as
you do so. Yoga is a great way to stretch, destress and clear your mind.
An easy one is the “child’s pose.” Sit on
your feet and bend forward, trying to stretch
your spine and bring your forehead as close
to the floor as possible. Lay your arms at
your side as you close your eyes and breath
deeply.

Looking for that perfect place to host
a shower or business luncheon?
¤Adjust your diet. When you’re stressed
out, you’ll want to avoid caffeine, chocolate
and alcohol — those foods that are easy to
reach for, but only increase your stress level.
Make sure to drink lots of water and try to
eat more vegetables which will help keep
your system clear.
¤Take time to enjoy peaceful surroundings
Go on a 10-minute walk in the middle of your
day to appreciate nature and architecture.
Avoid thinking about anything wedding
related, and instead focus on what you’re seeing and how nice it feels to be outside. You’ll
come back in far more able to deal with
what’s going on.
¤Massage. Neck and shoulder massages
can relieve tension. You can also apply hot or
cold packs to these areas of the body.
¤Think. Recall the sound, feel, sight, taste
and smell of pleasant things. Use guided
imagery to conjure up specific pictures such
as the beauty of a sunset.
¤Relax. Tighten a group of muscles and
hold them in extreme tension for a few seconds. Then, relax the muscles while focusing
on releasing tension or stress. Start with
muscles in the toes and feet, working your
way up to the muscles in the neck and head.
¤Sleep. Maintain a regular sleep schedule.

¤Is their location near?

¤Are they licensed by the

¤When is the balance due?
¤How are the charges calculated? Per person? Per plate?
¤Are tips included in the fees?
You can save money by serving
a sit-down luncheon in lieu of a
fancy dinner.
Order food that is in season and
easy to obtain.
Enlist your family and friends
to help with setting up, serving
and clean up. Ask the caterer if
you’re allowed to bring some of
your own entrees, condiments or
desserts to help cut costs.
Find out if the caterer provides
tableware, linens, utensils and the
cake table. If so, what are the
additional charges?
If you think you can get these
items cheaper somewhere else,
consider paying a little extra and
letting them handle it.
Less hassle will probably be
worth the cost.
Make sure you tell the caterer
how many guests you will be
expecting by the date given.
If there is any significant
change, you can get back to them
before final preparations are
made.
Give them several contact phone
numbers and get the same information from them. The more prepared you are, the less likely you
are to call them for emergency
purposes.

One sure way to please them is

You’re going to want one that

Wedding caterers usually have

You are planning your wedding and have
come to the bouquet. There are several styles
from which to choose.
¤Hand-tied bouquet. It’s an assortment of
flowers tied with a pretty ribbon.
¤Arm bouquet. It’s an arrangement of longstemmed flowers, often roses or calla lilies, tied
loosely with a ribbon or bow and cradled in
one arm. Sometimes it’s a single, perfect
bloom.
¤Bledermeier bouquet. It’s concentric circles
with different flowers or different colors of the
same flower in each circle.
¤Pav bouquet. It’s a tight cluster of blooms
that may include one type of flower in the same
color or related colors or several different varieties of flowers.
¤Pomander bouquet. It’s a ball of flowers
made by inserting stems into a globe-shaped
base suspended from a looped ribbon. The ribbon can be held or slipped over the wrist.
¤Free-form bouquet. It’s a loose grouping of
flowers that often has blossoms and greenery
coming out a various angles.
¤Cascade bouquet. It’s a large, tear-shaped
arrangement of flowers, full at the top and
dropping into tendrils at the bottom, spilling
gracefully downward.
The bride, of course, will be the focal point of

the registry
Getting showered with wedding gifts
One of the best parts about getting married is registering for gifts
at your favorite store.
This task isn’t just left to the
bride anymore. The groom should
take part so the decisions can be
made together as a couple.
If you’re just setting up a new
household, there’s plenty you’re
going to need. Start with the basics
by registering tableware, crystal,
sheets, towels and small appliances.
Where to register
¤All major department stores.
¤Building supply stores such as
Lowe’s and Home Depot.
¤Hardware stores.
¤Sporting goods stores.
¤Gardening stores or local nurseries.
¤Mortgage lenders — registering for contributions to a down
payment on a house is becoming
popular.
¤Travel agents — whether for
the honeymoon or another trip.
¤Home furnishing and accessory
stores.
¤Online registries.
Here are 10 questions to ask
before you register:
¤Do you need an appointment?
¤What is the store’s return policy?
¤How easy is it to return
things?
¤How does the store keep track
of your registry and gifts? A computer database is the preferred
method as it is the most quickly
updated.
¤How often does the store
update the registry and gift?
¤How long does it take to get
your gift registry up and running?
¤Does the store have a toll-free
phone number?
¤Does the store accept phone
purchases?
¤Does the store have a Website?
¤Does the store ship gifts? Any
additional charge for this service?

destination wedding
Getting married at an out-of-town spot
One of the most watched trends in weddings
today is that of the “destination wedding.”
They account for a whopping 10 percent of
all weddings among American or Canadian
couples.
This is pretty significant because just 10
years ago, the term “destination wedding” was
virtually unheard of. And there’s no reason to
expect a cooling down of this trend any time
soon. In fact, it’s just gaining speed.
prefer something a little more low key or quiet, with just the people closest to them in
attendance. The destination wedding is perfect
for this.
And the Internet makes the world a much
smaller place. Through online research, you
can explore geographic locations, tour resorts
and hotels, read menus, look at cakes and view
examples of a photographer’s work or a hairstylist’s updos.
Planning a wedding from afar is no longer
the scary and risky proposition it once was.
You can make contact with resorts and vendors, including wedding coordinators, in the
destination of choice via e-mail, and have
information, price lists and contracts sent back
to you in a matter of moments.
What is it?
Destination wedding essentially means
“eloping with a crowd.” It’s a modern version of
eloping.
When a couple eloped in the past, they ran
off alone together. Now they may still run off
to get married, but they take their closest family members and friends with them to share in
the celebration.
Pat Cipriana at All About Travel shows some
of the brochures for destination weddings.
Why is it hot?
Because it appeals both to those who want to
run away and get married somewhere exotic,
as well as to couples who want to share a really memorable wedding experience with the
people closest to them.
Couples are grabbing hold of this idea
because, instead of having just one day to celebrate their nuptials with their favorite people,
they have several days of quality time together.
Compare this with the traditional wedding,
where oftentimes the day speeds by in a whirlwind and the couple has only fleeting moments
to spend with individual guests and you start
to see the appeal of the destination wedding.
Another reason for the destination wedding
trend is that remarriages now account for 50
percent of marriages in the US and Canada.
While a conventional or traditional wedding is
perfectly acceptable for a remarriage today if
that’s what the couple wants, some couples

How many guests?
You can invite as many or as few people as
you want to your destination wedding. Just
keep one thing in mind: There are likely to be
people on your guest list who will be unable
to attend due to the expense involved or the
logistics of arranging a jaunt away from
home.
People have limited vacation time, they
may need significant lead time to book their
vacations or they may not be able to arrange
to be away from home on the dates you’ve
selected for a wide variety of other reasons.

Bridal showers are a great
pre-wedding party get together. They are easy to plan.
For showers, it is a good
idea to purchase a gift that
the couple may not purchase
themselves.
When planning a shower,
make sure the theme coordinates with the couple’s styles.
Here are some popular
bridal shower themes:
¤Through the months. The
months of the year are distributed to the guests and
they buy a gift that will coordinate or represent the
months. For example, for

dishes and utensils.
¤The four seasons. Each
season is given and the gift
coordinates with the season.
For example, for summer buy
beach towels.
¤Around-the-clock. Each
hour of the day is given to a
guest and the gift will coordinate with that hour. For
example, for 8 a.m. purchase
breakfast trays for breakfast
in bed.
¤Name the room. Each
room of the house is distributed (bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, study, etc.).
¤Gift certificate. For the
person who is hard to buy for,
guest can get gift certificates
to their favorite stores, restaurants or activities.
¤Electronic. This theme
involves gifts from a I-pod
and CD players to DVD players and computer accessories.
¤Holiday. This involves
either one or more holidays
and the gifts surround this
idea. Christmas is especially a
fun one to do.
¤Hardware. The men really enjoy this one. The gift
range is from screwdrivers
and hammers to lawnmowers
and workbenches.
¤Athletic and fitness. For
the physically fit group, these
gifts may be weights and tennis balls to step benches and
baseball bats.
¤Over the years. This is
when the guests buy any gift
for the bride and groom and
also give a little something
they have received over the
years.

Wedding will be remembered in pictures
How will you remember your wedding and
reception? Of course you’ll have the memories locked away in your mind, but they won’t
be as vivid as photographs and a video of the
big event.
It’s important to remember that the photographer you choose will be responsible for
capturing the moments and memories of
what may be the most important day of your
life.
With this in mind, you’ll want to take great
care in selecting a wedding photographer
considering there are no second chances.
As you might imagine, wedding photography is one of the most challenging types of
professional photography.
With that in mind, you will want to select a
wedding photographer who has the skills and
experience to make everyone look beautiful
and who is able to produce beautiful work in
a multitude of locations, in all kinds of
weather conditions, in a minimum amount of
time.
At the same time, your photographer
should have the personality to complement
you on your most joyous day.
Remember, you will be interacting with
this person all day under what will most
likely be stressful conditions.
In addition, your photographer will be
interacting extensively with your friends,
family and members of your wedding party.
Take your time and follow some of these
simple suggestions, and you will most certainly be satisfied with the outcome.
Where do you Begin?
Personal referrals or asking friends, relatives and co-workers for suggestions is a great
place to start.
Typically, people who have had positive
experiences with photographers are more than
willing to share that information.
In addition, you’ll already have some insight
about the photographer’s personality before
you actually meet.
After compiling a preliminary list, visit each
photographer’s web site and thoughtfully
review his or her online portfolio. If a portfolio
looks appealing you, chances are, that photographer might be a good fit.
Next, call or e-mail each photographer on
your list.
Through this initial contact, you can determine the photographer’s availability, the type
of work they specialize in (candid or traditional) as well as an estimate of the cost and the
package you will receive for that fee.
Schedule appointments with the photographers who seem most appropriate and ask to
view their portfolios in person and discuss
more details.
Ask each of them to show you a complete
portfolio of a single wedding — this will give
you a much clearer sense of what you can
expect than a collection of choice shots from
several different events.
Pay attention to whether the photographer
is adept at portraying individual expressions
and personalities.
Ideally, these meetings should include the
bride and groom as well as the bride’s parents
since you will all be interacting with the photographer.
What questions should you ask?
Be sure to write down all of your questions
beforehand, and take thorough notes during
the meetings. Although most professional photographers will provide you with a clear outline of their services and fees prior to your
meeting, you will, in all likelihood, still have a
large number of questions to ask.
Remember, the more information you have,
the more confident and relaxed you’ll feel on
your special day. The following are some questions you may wish to consider asking:
¤How will you show me pictures for selection (electronic, proofs, contact sheets, online
gallery, etc.)?
¤Will you help me choose the final pictures?
¤How will you make it easy for friends and
family to order reprints?
¤What are the costs of the various levels

¤Enter the digital age with digital photography. It’s less costly than film, and with technological advances in equipment — digital
images are no longer a sacrifice in quality.
Many photographers have taken the digital
plunge — which results in savings for you.
¤Cut the timeline. The longer your event,
the more it will cost to document it. Since photographers often charge based on the number
of hours they will spend at your wedding, a
shorter/smaller wedding celebration will yield
big savings in your photography budget.
Making a commitment
At this point, you should have a relatively
clear idea of which photographer is best suited
to capture your wedding day memories.
Once you have made a decision, be prepared
to leave a deposit to reserve the date. You may
still wish to reassure yourself by asking about
a few final details.
For example, find out what the photographer’s policy for wedding-date changes is and
what the alternatives are if he or she is not
available on the backup date.
Also, ask about their policy for an unexpected cancellation. If you feel the photographer is
right for you, then relax and make the commitment with the confidence that you’ve made a
well-formed, intelligent decision in planning
the most important day of your life.

The rehearsal dinner is an important part
of the wedding festivities. It provides the
bride and the groom with one last time to sit
down with the wedding party before the big
day.
In addition, it is a time to express gratitude
to everyone that has been involved with the
planning of the wedding.
It can be casual or formal, depending on the
taste and desire of the bride and the groom.
Either way, there are a few things to keep in
mind when planning and hosting the rehearsal dinner.
The wedding rehearsal dinner can help
reduce pre-wedding jitters and allow all members of the wedding party to reduce a little
stress the night before.
It is not just the bride and groom who are
feeling the exhausting effects of stress. All
members of the wedding party can get to
know each other and enjoy a night out.
A rehearsal dinner is traditionally held a
day or two before a wedding. Most commonly,
it occurs the night before the wedding. The
rehearsal dinner should follow immediately
after the rehearsal with the bridal party.
The rehearsal dinner is a dress rehearsal of
the wedding. Any wedding rehearsal dinner
will only include the bride and groom’s par-
ents and those in the wedding.
This includes the bridesmaids, matron of
honor, best man, ushers, reverend/priest/justice of peace, flower girl and ring bearer. No
one else should be invited to the wedding
rehearsal dinner.
Traditionally, the groom’s parents pay for
the wedding rehearsal dinner and cocktails.
Invitations are not necessary, usually word of
mouth will suffice.
The wedding rehearsal dinner usually consists of drinks before dinner while the restaurant does the last-minute check of the
requested banquet room. The dinner is then
served with a round of toasts to the bride-tobe and the groom-to-be.
The evening ends with dessert, coffee and
conversation. If expense is an issue, the
groom’s parents can opt to hold a buffet dinner or ask the restaurant for a group rate
menu.
If the wedding is to take place on the day
after the rehearsal dinner, it is an excellent
idea to keep the rehearsal dinner low key. The
last thing anyone wants is to have the bride,
groom and/or wedding party late for the big
day because they had too much to drink the
night before.
