A Reflection…from
Melody Devine,
Director of Religious Education
May 12, 2013
After a long winter, which continued into spring, May is in full swing and finally full bloom.
The weather has cooperated somewhat and none too soon. The month of May brings Confirmations, Graduations and First Communions, the weather better cooperate!
Yesterday 130 children from St James Parish came to the table for Eucharist for the very first time. The
children and their families have been preparing for this important day since they were welcomed into the Catholic
Church through baptism. The parents of our First Communicants have made FAITH a priority for their family and it
shows through the way in which the children have shown their excitement, understanding and reverence for receiving
the sacrament. Earlier this year the children received the Sacrament of Reconciliation; this has been an exciting yet
challenging year for the young people and for their families.
The challenge is to keep the excitement of the two sacraments alive. As a community of faith we all are responsible to
help our young families make their faith lives a priority. When families are being pulled in all directions, family commitments, school events, sports and the many other obligations can often draw families away from the church. Attending
church each Sunday can often take a back seat. What can help our St. James families and our own families to keep the
excitement alive? We can be understanding and encourage our young families about the importance of celebrating the
sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist over and over; share your story with them, be a witness to your faith.
Today, we celebrate Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day is often referred to as a Hallmark holiday, but it is what we make of it.
For the Mothers both living and deceased, for the many Moms in our lives, our Grandmothers, Daughters, Granddaughters, Sisters, Aunts, Cousins and all of the women who have influenced and nurtured us throughout the years, today can
be a day of thanks, a day to remember. Mother’s Day, until 14 years ago when Jesus called her home, was all about my
Mom. She nurtured us as a family. She was selfless and always put her family first. She was friend to many and never
left anyone out; she never forgot a birthday or anniversary and was the Matriarch of our family who everyone looked to
for guidance and reassurance. My Mom loved unconditionally.
Ten years ago I read Cokie Robert’s book We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters, an account of women and how we are connected in so many ways. Through Cokie’s personal stories and the profiles of women from varied walks of life, she
shares the importance of our roles as women. Cokie talks about her relationship with her Mother and Daughter and
writes; “there’s no role as demanding, as terrifying, as maddening, and as rewarding as that of a mother.” You will find
Cokie’s book filled with interesting stories; it is funny and there were times it brought me to tears. Read the newly
revised and extended release of her book. It is about women, but the transformations that occur throughout the book
have impacted men --- father’s, brothers, husbands and sons. We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters is a good summer read.
Whether today is a day spent with our Moms or with the memories we have, pray the following prayer. Hopefully it
brings you comfort and comfort to the important women in your life.
On this Mother's Day, we thank you, Lord, for the mothers in our lives. We are grateful for and treasure all of
the women in our lives that love us and care for us. Not only do we remember our mothers, but our grandmothers, godmothers, aunts and sisters and friends. In the name of your Holy Mother Mary, we pray. Amen.
Happy Mothers Day,
Melody Devine

At his Ascension, Jesus said to his apostles

How does my sharing in his death

Anointing of the Sick at Mass
Saturday, May 18 , 2013 at 8:30am Mass
A communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will take
place on Saturday, May 18th. Please mark your calendar and join us at the 8:30am
Mass. Whether you want to receive the sacrament yourself or pray with and for
those who are being anointed, you are invited to participate.
The sacrament's name, "Anointing of the Sick", emphasizes the important point that this is
a sacrament for the living. It is the church's ordinary rite for the strengthening of those
whose health is weakened by illness or age.
Who might choose to be anointed? The sacrament is for anyone with serious illness. For some it is an
ongoing struggle in need of God's healing strength. For others, it is a new and perhaps soon cured condition
with surgery or other treatment. All illness brings anxiety, and often, serious worry. Some persons who might
choose to receive the sacrament are: Those facing surgery, subject to chronic disease, wrestling with
depression, anxiety, or addictions; those aware of growing weakness; those seeking the healing of loss
or grief. Children as well as adults of all ages may be anointed. Caregivers who are seriously affected by
the illness of a spouse, parent or child can also be anointed. In the Anointing of the Sick, not only are the sick
ministered to, but they also minister to us by their witness of faithfulness to Christ and hope, even in the midst of their
suffering.
If you know someone who might like to receive anointing, please invite them to come with you to the
regularly scheduled 8:30am Mass on May 18th and assure them of our prayers.
If you have any questions, please contact Marianne Dilsner, Pastoral Associate at 224-345-7203

St. James Student Receives Ad Altare Dei
St. James 8th grader and Boy Scout, Danny Strebar, received the Ad Altare
Dei religious emblem from Bishop Emeritus Joseph Seigel at a ceremony held at The
Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet, Illinois, on April 6, 2013. Ad Altare Dei (To the
Altar of God) is the third of four emblems designed to assist Catholic Boy Scouts in
their spiritual growth and understanding of the faith; it focuses on deep examination
of the sacraments in preparation for Confirmation. During the year-long program of
study, Danny attended classes, did numerous reflection projects and write-ups,
attended a spiritual retreat at St. James and took part in the “Scouts Take Courage”
day of reflection with Bishop Conlon. He also participated in service projects at
St. Patrick’s Residence in Naperville.
Danny’s ongoing personal service project took on special meaning during
Ad Altare Dei. For the past four years, Danny has used part of his weekly allowance
to purchase over 500 rosaries for the patients at Edward Hospital in Naperville. On
Saturday mornings, he accompanies his mother on her Eucharistic Ministry rounds.
In his write up for Ad Altare Dei, he states “I go to the hospital in my Boy Scout uniform
so I can cheer up the patients who don’t get visitors, those who are sad or lonely, and
talk to those who seem to be afraid. I also hand out rosaries, if they would like one.
I think that having a Boy Scout visit them really makes their day since I can start a
conversation about merit badges or activities and they forget where they are for a few minutes. Sometime I learn that
their children or grandchildren are Eagle Scouts. Something as simple as my rosary project gives people a reminder
to ask God for help and comfort and lets them know that someone is thinking of them. Sometimes, when you give up,
but someone brightens your world, you get that spark back. Being part of the hospital ministry and the Ad Altare Dei
program gave me a deeper understanding of how special the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Healing are.”
Danny received the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei religious emblems as a Cub Scout with St. James Pack 266.
Now a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 37 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights, Danny has begun planning
his Eagle Scout project, which will benefit St. James. “Father Bill, Father Joji, Father Gilbert, Mrs. Pappas, Mrs. Farrell,
my teachers and Mrs. Baker, my Ad Altare Dei counselor, have taught me so much about being Catholic and
appreciating the spiritual gifts and education that I have been blessed to receive. I want to thank each of them,
along with my mom and my Scoutmasters, Tom Kresnicka and Dave Ferriss, for their guidance and support. They
are all amazing examples of how to lead a Christian life and how to live by the Scout Oath and Law.” Danny will
attend Benet Academy in Lisle this fall.
Congratulations from St. James, Danny!
