This day is usually observed on the eleventh or the twelfth day of the brighter half of the lunar month of Kartheeka. The festival has a great significance for devotees of Lord Vishnu and MahaLakshmi. It is believed that Tulasi is an incarnation of Goddess MahaLakshmi, consort of Lord Vishnu. She is often called “Vishnupriya”, meaning “the beloved of Vishnu”. According to Padma Purana, Tulasi was a woman named Vrinda (incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi) in her previous birth. Thanks to all for your consideration in following our Temple Etiquette Sree Venkateswara Temple of Cleveland 4406 Brecksville Rd Richfield OH 44286 Page 2 SREE VENKATESWARA TEMPLE OF CLEVELAND Sree Padmavathi Sametha Sree Venkateswara Parabrahmane Namaha 4406 Brecksville Road Richfield OH 44286 Tel: (330) 576-5626 Summer timings: Open 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. & 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekends & holidays Issue 23 Nov 2014 Vrinda was the faithful wife of the demon-king named Jalandhar. She worshipped and offered prayers to Vishnu to protect her husband, Jalandhar, from being killed. Being born in water, Jalandhar claimed sovereignty over the ocean and demanded the 14 treasures churned out of the ocean in Vishnu's second incarnation. He declared war and became a danger to the demigods. Jalandhar remained invincible due to Vrinda’s piety and devotion to Vishnu. As a last resort to kill Jalandhar, Vishnu beguiles Vrinda by assuming her husband's form. Vrinda in her wrath curses and turns Lord Vishnu into a Black stone (Saligrama) for his deceit. Vishnu also retaliates, but in admiration of her impeccable chastity and piety, he transfers her into the sacred Tulasi plant and promises to marry her each year on this day of Kartheeka masam. The ammonite black stones or Saligrama are ancient stone formations of the universe and represent Vishnu. They are considered sacred and found on the bed of the river Gandaki in Nepal. Through this story, we realize that MahaVishnu is omnipresent. He is present in non-living forms such as stone. MahaLakshmi assumes the form of river Gandaki and Tulasi plant to be with her Lord. Tulasi Vivaah symbolizes the divine union of Universal Consciousness and Nature (Prakriti). Thus, all devout Hindu women worship the Tulasi plant with flowers and milk assuming Lord Vishnu/Krishna to be present on it on this auspicious day of Kartheeka masam. Literally, a symbolic marriage is performed between the Tulasi and the Saligrama or image of Vishnu/Krishna. The belief is that one who performs this marriage of giving away Tulasi to Vishnu as one's own daughter, earns the virtue of performing Kanyadana that is regarded as an extremely meritorious act. This sacred ceremonial day marks the auspicious beginning of the annual marriage season for the Hindus. The ceremony of Vishnu’s marriage is reenacted in a puja called Kalyana Utsavam. On the day of Tulasi Kalyana Utsavam (Tulasi Vivaah), the Tulasi plant is dressed up as if it were a murti. A dainty wedding pavillion (mandap) is made of sugarcane stalks, and the Tulasi plant is decorated with a yellow bridal sari, miniature jewelery and red kumkum powder. Vishnu wears a golden crown and traditional bridegroom's attire. The wedding is conducted with complete wedding puja and homa rites. The Tulasi plant is offered a feast of seasonal berries, new tamarind, turmeric, amla fruit and rice. Vishnu is offered sweets made of milk. After the ceremony, prasad is distributed among all. Significance of Tulasi: Tulasi as the most auspicious plant is paid utmost reverence by devotees. No worship or offering to Vishnu is complete without a leaf of Tulasi placed in it, as it pleases Lord Vishnu. In the Vedic tradition, Maharshi Narada, the son of Brahma, the creator, takes the role of cosmic instigator. He makes devious suggestions to the unsuspecting targets making them fall in his trap. Subsequently, as he sneaks in and out of episodes, interesting consequences occur forming the core of stories. During the Dwapara period while Lord Krishna was on earth, the heavenly gods missed Him dearly. They hatched a plan with the help of Narada to bring Him back. Narada upon entering Dwaraka, encountered Satyabhama, Lord Krishna’s wife, in the courtyard. As she was decorating herself with flowers on her tresses, Narada politey asked her, “Maharani Satyabhama, please don’t doubt my intentions or my age. Is it true that Lord Krishna loves Rukmini more than you?” Shell-shocked, Maharani Satyabhama asked Maharshi Narada how she could have Lord Krishna’s love as husband in her next life. Narada then told Satyabhama to give Lord Krishna away to him in charity and that it would ensure that her wish came true. Upon doing so, Narada and Lord Krishna immediately left for their heavenly abode. Satyabhama began to miss her husband and pleaded with Narada to bring Him back. Narada said that they would have to give the gods something equal to the weight of Krishna for Him to return from heaven. As Lord Krishna was weighed, no amount of jewelry could tilt the balance in her favor. Satyabhama was in dire straits and tears swelled in her eyes. To bring her out of the predicament, Lord Krishna suggested Rukmini’s help. Swallowing her pride Satyabhama escorted Rukmini out of her chambers. On her way out, Rukmini plucked a Tulasi leaf and while praying to Lord Krishna placed the leaf on top of the jewelry on the scale. Lo and behold! The scale tilted heavier where the Tulasi was placed. Then lord Krishna asked Satyabhama to remove all the jewelry except the Tulasi leaf. Even then the Tulasi side remained heavier. Lord Krishna remarked that the offering made to Him with love and devotion matters most.. He then remained on earth with his wives. Since that time, Tulasi leaf is added to any auspicious gift. Like-wise, a father places Tulasi leaf in his daughter’s hand while giving her away in the Hindu marriage tradition, known as “Kanyadaanam”. Kaartheeka Deepam (Thu, Nov 6) —The Month Of Damodara by Dr. Narender P. Reddy The month of Kartheeka, also called the month of Damodara, is a very auspicious month as it is filled with wonderful and divine events, and is very dear to Lord Vishnu. Kartheeka is the month when the Supreme Being, who dwells inside and outside this Universe, was bound by a mere cowherd lady. Srimad Bhagavatham describes the event as follows: Mother Yashoda wanted to tie child Krishna with a rope because of His pranks. However big the rope she purchased, it always was short by two inches to encircle the belly. Yashoda got tired and started sweating. “Swamaathuh swinna-gaathraaya visrasthakabara-srajah, Drishtvaa parishramam Krishnah krupaya-aseeth swabhandane! (Bhagavatham 10:9:18)”. Meaning: Krishna saw His mother who was trying to tie Him with a rope. Her whole body was wet with sweat, her braid came loose and the garland Sree Venkateswara Temple of Cleveland 4406 Brecksville Rd Richfield OH 44286 Page 3 SREE VENKATESWARA TEMPLE OF CLEVELAND Sree Padmavathi Sametha Sree Venkateswara Parabrahmane Namaha 4406 Brecksville Road Richfield OH 44286 Tel: (330) 576-5626 Summer timings: Open 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. & 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekends & holidays Issue 23 Nov 2014 she was wearing in the braid was falling down. Then, Lord Krishna out of mercy, let her tie Him.” What a wonderful event! The Supreme Being Sri Krishna the controller of all entities in all the universes, including Brahama, Shiva, Indra etc., was bound by a Cowherd lady Yashoda. This shows that He is Baktha-Paraadeena (under the control of His true devotees). “Naayam sukhaapo Bhagavaan dehinaam Gopikaasuthah, Gnyaaninaamcha aathma bhoothaanaam yadaa bhakthi mathaamiha. (Bhagavatham 10:9:21).” Meaning: Gopikaa’s son (Krishna) is not attainable by great sages, people of supreme knowledge, or even by great yogis, as he is attainable by pure devotees who believe in Him alone. Since Lord Krishna’s belly has been tied, He is called as Damodara (Daama = constrained/tied, Udara =Belly). The month of Kartheeka is called the month of Damodara. There are two systems of the Lunar Calendar: Poornimanth (starts the day after Poornima and ends in Poornima) and Amavasyanth (starts the day after Amavasya and ends on Amavasya). The Poornimanth month of Kartheeka is referred to as the month of Damodara. In the month of Kartheeka, the day after Deepavali, Sri Krishna lifted the Govardhana hill for seven days and provided shelter to the cows and cowherds from Devendra’s wrath of continuous rains/thunderstorms. For this kind act of Krishna, the celestial cow Surabhi came down to install Sri Krishna as their king and gave Him the title Gava-Indra (King of cows; Gava=cows, Indra=king). Over the time, in cowherds’ usage, the word Gava-Indra became GOVINDA. Lord Venkateswara is thrilled by this word GOVINDA as it is His earned title. Tulasi plant is the dearest to Lord Vishnu. Tulasi appeared from the milky ocean during the month of Kaartheeka. Tulasi vivaham or marriage of Tulasi with Saalagraama stone (an incarnation of Vishnu) is performed on the dwadashi (twelfth day) of ascending moon of the month of Kartheeka. This marriage is also performed on the full moon day of Kartheeka. Also, Tulasi is glorified with lighting lamps. Lord Sriman Narayana wakes up from His Yoga-nidra during the month of Karthika on the Ekadashi of the ascending moon. This Ekadashi is called Prabhodana Ekadashi. This Ekadashi marks the end of four month long chathur-masya vratham by the sanyasees, and marks the beginning of their traveling to teach the spiritual knowledge (Prabhodana=Teaching). In the month of Kartheeka, Lord Vamana (an incarnation of Vishnu who appeared in Ashada month) performed the wonderful act of measuring the earth and the entire Universe (three worlds), with his two steps, showing that everything belongs to Him. He placed the third step on King Bali and sent Bali to the neither world (the planet Rasaa thala), thus restoring Devendra as the ruler of the planet of the demi-gods. According to Padma puranam, any devotional act toward Lord Vishnu like puja, lighting of lamps, meditation, or any meritorious act performed to Vishnu during the month of Kartheeka, destroys sin accumulated in many births, and brings a hundredfold results. Padma puranam specifically advises everyone to glorify Lord Vishnu during the month of Kartheeka by lighting a lamp. Why Lamp (Deepam)? Lamp destroys darkness and is used for glorification. The lamp of knowledge removes ignorance. By merely thinking of the divine past times of Lord Krishna (Sriman Narayana) performed in Kartheka, we come to realization that devotion to Sriman Narayana alone fulfils all human goals. When we begin to glorify Him, all desires get fulfilled. We tend to develop devotion and spiritual understanding. In the following solar month of Margaseersha (Dhanur-masam), Andal, through her famous composition Thiruppavai, shows us how to put this knowledge and devotion into practice for the eternal Bhagavad anubhavam. Let us all offer Lamp(s) to glorify Lord Sri Venkateswara (Vishnu, Krishna) during the month of Karteeka to fulfil our desires and begin our spiritual journey. Panchami Theertham - The day Goddess Padmavathi (Alamelu Manga) appeared… (Thu, Nov 27) by Dr. Narender P. Reddy Goddess Padmavathi (MahaLakshmi) is glorified as the mother of innumerable universes. She represents the Lord’s Sankalpa (will) and compassion. The Divine Mother is concerned for the miserable plight of Her children and tries to save them by appealing to the Lord for forgiveness and compassion. The devotees appeal to the supreme Mother to exercise her loving concern for the well-being of her children and to bring them closer to their Father - Lord Srinivasa. Padmavathi who is the divine incarnation of MahaLakshmi, the consort of Lord Sriman Narayana, is popularly known as Alamelu Manga. Goddess Padmavathi’s (Alamelu Manga’s) appearance day (Panchami Theertham) this year is on Thu, Nov 27, 2014. Sulking over the incident of Brughu Maharishi, Goddess MahaLakshmi left Vaikuntam and started meditating in Kolhapuram. In the meantime, Lord Sriman Narayana appeared as Srinivasa on the sacred Tirumala hills and eventually got married to Padmavathi, the daughter of Akasha Raja. This Padmavati of Akasha Raja was a reincarnation of Vedavathi (an amsha of Goddess MahaLakshmi in the Sri Rama time period). After receiving the wedding invitation from Lord Srinivasa through the Sun God, Goddess MahaLakshmi (who was still in Kolhapuram) attended the wedding of Srinivasa-Padmavathi and then went back to Kolhapuram. After some time, Srinivasa went to Kolhapuram to reunite with Goddess MahaLakshmi. Upon arriving in Kolhapuram, He found out that Lakshmi went to pathala lokam (netherworld). Then, Srinivasa went to Shuka Ashramam (hermitage of Sri Shukamuni,Tiru Shuka puram which now became Tiruchanoor also called Alamelu Manga Puram). According to Sri Varaha Puranam, this is the sacred place where Indra, the king of Demigods, once Sree Venkateswara Temple of Cleveland 4406 Brecksville Rd Richfield OH 44286 Page 4 SREE VENKATESWARA TEMPLE OF CLEVELAND Sree Padmavathi Sametha Sree Venkateswara Parabrahmane Namaha 4406 Brecksville Road Richfield OH 44286 Tel: (330) 576-5626 Summer timings: Open 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. & 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekends & holidays Issue 23 Nov 2014 offered prayers to Goddess MahaLakshm to regain heaven. According to Padma Puranam, Srinivasa dug a lake (Padma Sarovaram) in Tiruchanoor and started prayers to MahaLakshmi using lotus flowers grown in the Padma sarovaram. Twelve years passed meditating this way. “Evam thapasthasya dwadashaabda gathaa dwija …” “Thatha thrayodashE varshE kaarthikE shukla pakshE panchyamyaam shukravaarE cha muhurthE maithra sangykE vapu punyaa sukhaa vaathaa Uttaraashaada taarakE…..Padma Saro madye… mahanabooth….” “In the thirteenth year, on a Friday when the Sun was in the month of Kaartheeka and the fifth day of the ascending moon transiting the star of Uttarashada while nice breeze…. from the middle of the Padma Sarovaram arose a great heap of shining….” “Mandasmitha manOgnyangee madhavam veeksha saadaram kalhaara maalamaadaaya yaksha kardama lepanaam….sthitha PadmarathE Devi Deavam veekshanath Chathurbujam.” Goddess MahaLakshmi, happy and blushing, holding a garland of nice smelling kalharaka (lotus) flowers in her hand, appeared on a chariot of flowers and remained looking at Srinivasa... “Utthaaya sasmithaa Lakshmee Agathya Hari mangyasa kalhaara maalaa mumuchya VishnO kantE samarpayacha. Aalingyatham Chathurbaahum sravalOka vyalOkayath, Hari vakshaha prathistayaa….” MahaLakshmi stood up and charmingly garlanded Srinivasa, hugged Him and consecrated herself on His divine chest (Hari vakshaha prathistayaa….” ). This wonderful episode has been described in the Kshethra kandam 34th chapter of the Padma Puranam. Now, Goddess MahaLakshmi, who garlanded Srinivasa, also became known as Padmavathi since she came through the Lotus pond (Padma Sarovaram). To commemorate this extremely wonderful and blissful event, the 75th name of Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy's ashtothara shatha namavali chanted daily in Tirumala temple (61st chapter of Venkatachala mahathyam from Sri Varaha Puranam) is “LasalLakshmee Karaamboja dattha kalhaaraka SrajE”. Lasath = Glowing/shining; KarambOja = lotus like hands; Dattha = Offered; Kalharaka = a variety of Lotuses; (Sraja means garland) Sraje= garlanded. This means: One who was garlanded by the lotus like hands of Glowing Lakshmi with a garland made of a type of lotus flowers. In addition, the 828th name of Sri Venkateswara sahasranamam (thousand names from Brahmanda puranam which are chanted every day in Tirumala) is “Sree Pradattaamuja sragveenE namaha.” This name means “One who had (worn) the garland of lotus flowers offered by Sree (Lakshmi) Devi. After Goddess MahaLakshmi (who was known as Padmavathi since she came through the lotus flower at Padma Sarovaram) consecrated herself onto Srinivasa’s chest, the other Padmavathi (the daughter of Akasa Raja to whom Srinivasa got married) also merged into Goddess MahaLakshmi on Srinivasa’s chest. Thus, Goddess Lakshmi is an integral part of Lord Venkateswara’s chest in Tirumala and is projecting outward from the chest. During Sri Venkateswara abhishekam (offering of divine shower every Friday), in the middle of the abhishekam, the priest stops and specifically announces that they are doing haldi (turmeric) abhishekam to Lakshmi Amma varu on the chest. The priest sometimes takes a sandalwood impression of this Lakshmi. Following the daily archana to Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy, the priest performs archana to Goddess Lakshmi using the sixteen names of Lakshmi (starting with Sriyai namaha, Lokha dahathre namaha, Brahma mathre namaha…..) which were originally used by Indra in his prayers to please Lakshmi to regain the Swargaloka (the heaven). Long before these events, when the demigods lost the war to the demons, the king of Demigods Indra came to Padma Sarovaram (now called Tiruchanoor) and found Goddess Lakshmi Devi along with Sriman Narayana seated on a large lotus. “Sthitham suvarna kamala Pundareekaaksha samyuthaam driushtvaa preethi samyukthah! Pranmyaambuja dharineemkrithaanjali putaaah nendraha thustuvu lokamaatharam! (Sri Varaha Puranam)” Unlike other Vishnu temples, there is no separate vigraham or temple for Padmavathi (Lakshmi) in Tirumala. Therefore, there is a general misconception that Padmavathi left Lord Srinivasa and is staying in Tiruchanoor. Sri Varaha Puranam and other puranas clearly point out that Goddess Lakshmi is seated on Lord Sri Venkateswara’s divine chest “(Hari vakshaha prathishtayaa, PadmaPuranam). “Dvibujaa vyuha Lakshmi wadbadda Padmasana Priya Srinivasanga madyastha sutharam Kesava Priyaha”, Sri Varaha Puranam first Canto 39th chapter). He is called Srinivasa because mother (Sri) Lakshmi resides (nivasathe) on His chest.. Lord Sri Venkateswara immediately grants our wishes, because when we go to see Him, Goddess Lakshmi (Padmavathi)’s glance falls on us. She is a personification of extreme daya (mercy). She, the Divine Mother, recommends Lord Sri Venkateswara to forgive us and bless us. Thus, we are indefinitely in debted to Goddess Mahalakshmi (Padmavathi). To commemorate the divine appearance of Goddess Lakshmi, there is a nine day Brahmotsavam performed every year for Padmavathi (Alamelu Manga). The Brahmotsavam concludes on Padmavathi’s appearance day with a chakra snanam in Padma Sarovaram. On this day, Lord Srinivasa sends Saare to Padmavathi which includes ornaments, clothes and other things. This appearance day is referred to as Panchami Theertham.
