Spring 2014 Jeani Taylor, Editor FRANK FEDERICO MASTER PASTELIST AND PSA 2013 HALL OF FAME HONOREE Frank will be the Juror/Judge for our National Juried Exhibition October of 2014 and associated Workshop Instructor, Oct. 27-29th at the Cultural Arts Alliance Bayou Arts Center, Santa Rosa Beach, FL By Carrie Raeburn In 1999, I was lucky enough to take a Frank Federico workshop at PSA, NY. On the first day, I looked through a stack of his photographic references. Immediately I recognized that this was an artist who knew how to capture dynamic compositions even on film. Strong reference material to say the least. He then handed us some bright yellow pastel papers that he had prepared himself with a gritty surface and acrylic paint. He offered us a choice of several tubes of watercolors in dark colors, instructed us to select a photo and block in the dark masses UPSIDE DOWN on the paper. We were only allowed to have one watercolor tube. I chose a dark ultramarine blue which was a striking contrast to the vibrant yellow. I was surprised at how easy it was to block in the composition upside down. Things weren’t recognizable “things” anymore, just shapes. I only did the watercolor block-in that day and took it home without Frank’s reference photograph. A year later, I was going through my tall stack of unfinished work and was drawn to the piece. Although I didn’t have his reference material, there was enough information in the shapes to almost finish the painting with pastel. What I needed was reference material for the yellow cab at the curb and when I combed through my own photos from the trip, I found exactly the yellow cab that I needed. Turnpike Fantasy But in addition to these valuable lessons, there was something that impressed me enormously. Frank painted the entire week from a small box of pastels, maybe 5” x 5” x ¾” deep. It was filled with tiny bits of pastels. With this tiny box he did a demo every single day. One wonderful painting after another came out of that box. I watched in amazement since the goal of most pastelists is to collect more and more and more pastels, seeking to cover all possible future needs for “just the right color”. I understood that “more” wasn’t really what was required; it was making what you had work and doing so with an economy of strokes. His good humor, generous spirit and decades of knowledge were amazing. I hope you will join us at Frank’s workshop coming up in October and see for yourself what he has to offer to the students of pastel. Remarkable indeed. Jazz Duo FRANK FEDERICO (continued) More information on Frank: Frank Federico is a seasoned artist with many credits garnishing his career. He has attained the honorable level of signature membership of numerous prestigious art societies including Master Pastelist Pastel Society of America, International Association of Pastel Societies’ Master Circle Recipient, National Watercolor Society, Pastel Society of Painters on Cape Cod and Degas Pastel Society, to name a few. He has received numerous awards and has been selected for the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame Honoree for 2012 and most recently recipient of the PSA Founder’s Award Best in Show in 2013. Federico conducts workshops domestically and abroad. He teaches a regular art class at West Hartford Art League. His paintings have been exhibited in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Florida, California, New Mexico, New England, Brunei, Stockholm and Tokyo, and in group and solo exhibitions. Three galleries currently represent his work: Elaine Beckwith Gallery in Jamaica, VT. PS Gallery in Litchfield CT, Gregory James Gallery in New Milford CT. He is represented in the permanent collection of the Butler Museum in Youngstown, Ohio. Federico considers himself to be a colorist and a contemporary impressionist. He looks for the essence in a landscape or a figure, while applying emotional and aesthetically crafted content. “I believe that art is as capricious as nature’s own whims. It is as permanent as the endless striving for universal harmony, but in a constant flux. My technique is varied with mood and empathy for the subject matter or motif. Nature provides the catalyst – human or otherwise – with this constant flux of rhythms, shapes and boundless energy. Each painting speaks for itself and has a life of its own. I am the stoker of the energy, the catalyzer.” PASTEL PLUS “THE 2012 RICHARD McKINLEY WORKSHOP REVISITED” On March 29th, 2014, Melody Bogle conducted our meeting entitled, “The 2012 Richard McKinley Workshop Revisited”. She showed several pastel paintings that she did en plein air during his workshop and discussed the techniques that he had demonstrated. Melody and Carrie Raeburn shared demo paintings of Richard’s that they purchased during the workshop for viewing and discussion. Some of those present had attended the workshop but many had not. It is our hope that this meeting offered a review of the techniques that Richard had so eloquently presented for the benefit of both workshop attendees as well as providing interesting information to those artists who had been unable to attend. During Show & Tell, Carolyn Stewart passed around several of her beautifully made multimedia art pieces using hand made paper and vintage cloth from otherwise badly damaged quilts and textiles. A stimulating conversation followed on the use of a variety of materials in our work. Thank you both Melody and Carolyn! 2 PASTEL PLUS (continued) Roscoe Wallace presentation at the April 12, 2014 meeting of the Pastel Society of North Florida, held at the Destin Library, was a show and tell format describing his painting process, methods & techniques in both Pastels and Acrylics. He showed many computer printed examples when discussing his personal painting procedures using: The Camera, The Computer, Photoshop Elements, The Projector, The Printer He explained that he rarely sketches and uses his camera photo as his first step in identifying his subject matter. He usually alters his photos on the computer using Photoshop Elements to assist him. Each change can be retained or discarded like you would do if you were sketching. But, by use of the Photoshop Elements program you can quickly change the photo you have on your computer. Through your selection process, you can do quick fixes, change effects, add details, straighten, crop, add color, adjust values, etc. Roscoe says his personal approach of using Photoshop Elements saves a lot of time, supplies and energy and retains your spontaneous originality. He points out that he has over 1,300 original photos he has taken with his camera that he stores on his computer. Original subjects forever. What a delight! Every day available items and locations were discussed by full page photos illustrating how to arrive at original subject matter. Examples: Vases of flowers & kitchen counters become objective abstracts and Prague Rooftops become a large abstract painting. Roscoe’s message stresses: Setting a goal, a painting plan, (not necessarily in writing or in concrete). Use all available tools to identify your desired originality. But, allow changes as you proceed. (This swamp is along Hwy # 98 on the Forgotten Coast between Apalachicola and Carrabelle. Named after Tate who got lost wandering for days).
