garden directors - Portland Japanese Garden
MOMENTS FROM THE GARDEN’S HISTORY GARDEN DIRECTORS The design of the Portland Japanese Garden is the unique vision of Professor Takuma Tono. Critical to the implementation of Professor Tono’s Master Design Plan, and the subsequent development and maintenance that resulted in the Garden we see today, was the appointment of nine Garden Directors over 27 years who were charged with fulfilling Tono’s vision. This group represents some of the most sought-after Japanese garden designers and landscapers in the world. The system of continued professional stewardship throughout the history of this Garden has made it one of the finest in the world. At a reunion in 2010, they came together in Portland for the first time to share their thoughts on the history and development of the Portland Japanese Garden, and to provide insight into the evolution and current direction of the art of Japanese garden design.
