CLEAN HANDS AND TOOLS. 2. SET PARKING BRAKE. 3. RECORD RADIO PRESETS. 4. READ ENTIRE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING. PAGE 1 OF 12 1 GLOVE COMPARTMENT REMOVAL 1. REMOVE THE TENSION CORD FROM THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE GLOVE BOX. (FIG. 1.1) (FIG. 1.1) 2. DETACH THE REAR SECTION OF THE GLOVE BOX BY SQUEEZING THE SIDES AND PULLING AWAY FROM THE DASH UNTIL THE REAR CATCHES ARE CLEAR OF THE DASH. (FIG. 1.2) 3. PULL THE GLOVE BOX FROM IT’S HINGES AND SET IN A PLACE WHERE IT WON’T GET SCRATCHED. (FIG. 1.2) 2 HEAD UNIT FACE PANEL REMOVAL 1. REMOVE THE SHIFT KNOB BY UNSCREWING IT COUNTERCLOCKWISE. (FIG. 2.1) 2. REMOVE THE DRINK HOLDER BY PULLING UP AND FORWARD. (FIG. 2.2) (FIG. 2.1) (FIG. 2.2) NOTE: MANUAL TRANSMISSION PROCEDURE IS THE SAME. SET BRAKE AND SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL. NOTE: IT IS EASIER TO REMOVE THE HEAD UNIT FACE PLATE IN AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IF THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF WHILE IN DRIVE. PAGE 2 OF 12 2 continued... 3. PULL THE CONSOLE STRAIGHT UP. (FIG 2.3) 4. WRAP A THICK LAYER OF VINYL TAPE OVER THE SHIFT LEVER TO PROTECT OTHER PARTS FROM BEING SCRATCHED IN LATER STEPS. CAUTION COVER CENTER CONSOLE FROM BELOW THE HEAD UNIT FACE PANEL DOWN, WITH TAPE, TO PREVENT THE SURFACE FROM GETTING SCRATCHED OR DAMAGED. THE HEAD UNIT WILL REST AGAINST THIS AREA DURING THE INSTALL. 5. IF THE VEHICLE IS AN AUTOMATIC REMOVE THE TWO LIGHTS FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CONSOLE. (FIG 2.5) 6. DISCONNECT THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER . (FIG 2.6) (FIG. 2.3) (FIG. 2.5) (FIG. 2.6) (FIG. 2.7) 7. LEAVE THE ASHTRAY LIGHT ATTACHED AND LAY THE UNIT OVER TO THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR BOARD. (FIG 2.7) PAGE 3 OF 12 2 continued... 8. LOCATE THE TWO EXPOSED CENTER CONSOLE MOUNTING SCREWS AND REMOVE WITH A #2 PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER. (FIG. 2.8) (FIG. 2.8) 9. LOCATE 10 MM HEX HEAD ON THE RIGHT OF THE CENTER CONSOLE (INSIDE THE GLOVE BOX OPENING) AND REMOVE. (CAUTION, USE OF A MAGNETIZED SOCKET OR TAPE IS RECOMMENDED TO REDUCE THE RISK OF DROPPING THE BOLT). (FIG. 2.9) NOTE: REASSEMBLY TORQUE IS FROM 2N/M TO 4N/M. CAUTION DASH (FIG. 2.9) (FIG. 2.10) BE SURE THERE IS A TAPE WRAP ON THE EXPOSED SHIFTER. 10. REMOVE THE CENTER CONSOLE BY PULLING FROM THE BOTTOM, (NOTE: THERE ARE 6 RETAINING CLIPS HOLDING THE FACE PLATE TO THE DASH - 2 ON THE LEFT, 2 ON THE RIGHT, AND TWO ON TOP) BE CAREFUL NOT TO SCRATCH THE FRONT CONSOLE PANEL ON THE EXPOSED SHIFTER. (FIG. 2.10) NOTE: FOR VEHICLES WITHOUT CLIMATE CONTROL REMOVE THE TWO ADDITIONAL CLIPS BEHIND THE LOWER CONTROLS (FIG. 2.11) (FIG. 2.11) NOTE: IF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF IN DRIVE, PUT VEHICLE IN PARK AND TURN KEY TO OFF POSITION BEFORE SYSTEM CHECK IN STEP #3. PAGE 4 OF 11 3 SYSTEM CHECK (FIG. 3.1) 1. INSERT DMS CARTRIDGE INTO THE PHATBOX. (FIG. 3.1) 2. PLUG THE WHITE CONNECTOR INTO THE OPEN PORT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD UNIT. (FIG. 3.2) (FIG. 3.2) 3. PLUG THE FREE END OF THE HARNESS INTO PHATBOX. (FIG. 3.3) 4. WAIT FOR PHATBOX TO FINISH FIRST BOOT AND TURN OFF (ALL LEDS TURN OFF - THIS COULD TAKE UP TO 20 SECONDS) 5. TURN KEY TO POSITION 1 (ACC) 6. PRESS ‘CD’ BUTTON UNTIL DISPLAY SHOWS ‘EX’ 7. AFTER ABOUT 15 SECONDS THE PHATBOX SHOULD HAVE FINISHED BOOTING AND THE “WELCOME TO PHATNOISE” TRACK SHOULD BEGIN TO PLAY. (REFERENCE BOX 9 FOR DETAIL) (FIG. 3.3) 8. IN THE EVENT THE SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK, REPLACE THE SYSTEM AND REPEAT STEPS 1-6 TO VERIFY THAT THE ISSUE IS SYSTEM RELATED. 9. ONCE THE SYSTEM CHECK IS COMPLETED TURN OFF KEY AND DISCONNECT THE HARNESS FROM THE PHATBOX AND HEAD UNIT. 4 HARNESS ROUTING 1. REMOVE BOTH FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR SILLS. (FIG. 4.1) (FIG. 4.1) PAGE 5 OF 12 4 continued... 2. REMOVE THE PASSENGER SIDE KICK PANEL BY PULLING UP THE WEATHER STRIPPING AND PULLING THE KICK PANEL OUT AND AWAY FROM THE DOOR POST. (FIG. 4.2) . (FIG. 4.2) 3. FEED THE HARNESS FROM THE RIGHT LOWER PART OF THE GLOVE BOX OPENING THROUGH THE TOP OF THE DOOR PILLAR OPENING. (FIG 4.3) (FIG. 4.3) 4. ROUTE THE HARNESS THROUGH THE BACK OF THE GLOVE BOX UP THROUGH THE BACK OF THE HEAD UNIT’S COMPARTMENT. (FIG. 4.4) DASH (FIG. 4.4) 5. ROUTE THE HARNESS BEHIND THE INDICATED METAL BRACKET IN ORDER TO ASSURE THE GLOVE BOX WILL CLOSE PROPERLY. (FIG. 4.5) (FIG. 4.5) PAGE 6 OF 12 4 continued... 6. PULL HARNESS CONNECTOR INTO THE BACK OF THE HEAD UNIT COMPARTMENT. (FIG. 4.6) (FIG. 4.6) 7. PASS THE PHATBOX HARNESS UNDERNEATH THE ANTENNA AND THE PLASTIC SUPPORT PIECE. NOT ROUTING THE HARNESS IN THIS FASHION COULD HINDER THE HEAD UNIT FROM SEATING PROPERLY. CONNECT THE HARNESS AFTER ROUTING (FIG. 4.7) (FIG. 4.7) 8. ZIP TIE THE HARNESS TO THE LARGE FACTORY HARNESS IN THE BACK LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE OF THE GLOVE BOX OPENING. CLIP OFF THE EXCESS TIE WRAP WITH WIRE CUTTERS. (FIG. 4.8) 9. REMOVE THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR PILLAR TRIM BY PULLING OUT AWAY FROM THE DOOR PILLAR. (FIG. 4.8) 10. PASS THE HARNESS UNDER THE DOOR PILLAR TRIM TOWARDS THE REAR PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. (FIG. 4.8) (FIG. 4.9) 9 10 PAGE 7 OF 12 4 continued... 11. PULL THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE HARNESS THROUGH TO THE REAR PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. ONCE THROUGH THE HARNESS SHOULD SIT LOW TO THE FLOOR UNDER THE DOOR PILLAR TRIM. TIE WRAP HARNESS BEHIND DRIVERS KICK PANEL AND REAR OF FRONT DOOR SILL AT CONVENIENT LOCATIONS. CLIP OFF EXCESS TIE WRAP WITH WIRE CUTTERS. (FIG. 4.11) (FIG. 4.11) 12. RELEASE THE BENCH SEAT USING THE TWO CATCHES LOCATED UNDER THE REAR SEAT. (FIG. 4.12) (FIG. 4.12) 13. MOVE THE REAR SEAT FORWARD IN VEHICLE AND REMOVE THE 13 MM BOLT SECURING THE LOWER PORTION OF THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT PILLAR. (FIG. 4.13) NOTE: REASSEMBLY TORQUE VALUE IS FROM 37.2N/M TO 51.8 N/M (FIG. 4.13) 14. FOLD DOWN THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT TO ACCESS AND REMOVE THE TRUNK CARPET CLIP SHOWN. (4.14) (FIG. 4.14) 15. RELEASE THE LATCH SECURING THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT PILLAR AND REMOVE THE PILLAR. (4.15) (FIG. 4.15) PAGE 8 OF 12 4 continued... 16. ROUTE THE HARNESS UNDER THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT DOOR TRIM AND INTO THE TRUNK AREA. (FIG 4.16) (FIG. 4.16) 17. PASS THE HARNESS THROUGH THE ROUND OPENING BEHIND THE SEAT PILLAR INTO THE TRUNK COMPARTMENT. THE REMAINING HARNESS ROUTING WILL CONTINUE IN STEP 7 BUT THE PHATBOX MUST BE MOUNTED FIRST. (FIG 4.17) (FIG. 4.17) 5 4 BRACKET MOUNTING 1. HOLD THE BRACKET UP UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER’S SIDE OF THE TRUNK SHELF. ALIGN THE MOUNTING HOLES WITH THE TWO EXPOSED PLASTIC SNAPS (“A” & “B”). BRACKET SHOULD TOUCH “B” BUT NOT “A”. MARK THE HOLES ON THE SHELF WITH A GREASE PENCIL. (VIEW SHOWN AS IF LOOKING UP FROM THE FLOOR OF THE TRUNK. FIG. 5.1) NOTE: ALIGN BRACKET AS SQUARE AS POSSIBLE AGAINST SHEET METAL. 2. USING THE BALL PEEN HAMMER AND THE CENTER PUNCH, PUNCH THE MARKS. (FIG. 5.1) 3. DRILL THE FOUR PUNCHED MARKS TO 3/8” USING THE STEPPED DRILL BIT. (FIG. 5.3) (FIG. 5.3) CAUTION NOTE: SHEET METAL IS EXTREMELY THIN AND DIFFICULT TO CUT. A STANDARD DRILL WILL NOT PRODUCE THE CLEAN HOLES REQUIRED FOR A WELL NUT. A STEP DRILL/UNI-BIT OR SHEET METAL CUTTER BIT MUST BE USED. PAGE 9 OF 12 54 continued... 4. INSERT THE FOUR WELLNUTS INTO THE DRILLED HOLES. 5. SCREW THE BRACKET INTO THE WELLNUTS USING THE 3/4” PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS. (FIG. 5.5) (FIG. 5.5) 6 4 PHATBOX MOUNTING (FIG. 6.1) 1. PLUG THE HARNESS INTO THE PLAYER. SCREW AND TIGHTEN THE TWO HARNESS THUMB SCREWS INTO THE PHATBOX. (FIG. 6.1) NOTE: FRONT OF PHATBOX FACES REAR OF CAR. 2. PLACE A DROP OF THREAD LOCKING COMPOUND ON THE 1/2” FLATHEAD SCREWS. MOUNT THE PLAYER IN THE BRACKET USING THE SECOND AND FOURTH MOUNTING HOLES ON THE PLAYER’S SIDES. (FIG. 6.2) (FIG. 6.2) PAGE 10 OF 12 7 4 HARNESS ROUTING 1. USING TIE WRAPS SECURE THE HARNESS TO THE BOTTOM OF THE REAR SEAT CROSS MEMBER IN THREE LOCATIONS. CLIP OFF THE EXCESS TIE WRAP WITH WIRE CUTTERS. (FIG. 7.1) (FIG. 7.1) 4 2. USING TIE WRAPS FASTEN THE HARNESS TO VEHICLE WIRING HARNESS RUNNING OVER THE EXPOSED WHEEL WELL. CLIP OFF THE EXCESS TIE WRAP WITH WIRE CUTTERS. (FIG. 7.2) (FIG. 7.2) 3. BUNDLE ALL REMAINING HARNESS SLACK, TIE WRAP, AND PLACE INTO THE ROUND OPENING BEHIND THE REMOVED PASSENGER SIDE ROOD SEAT PILLAR. (7.3) (FIG 7.3) PAGE 11 OF 12 8 REINSTALLATION OF PARTS • REINSTALL HEAD UNIT, GLOVE COMPARTMENT, AND TRIM PIECES IN THE REVERSE ORDER OF REMOVAL. TORQUE VALUES LISTED IN APPLICABLE STEPS. • VACUUM SHAVINGS FROM TRUNK AND USING A CLEAN RAG WIPE FREE ANY FINGER PRINTS. • SET RADIO STATIONS AND CLOCK. • PROVIDE CUSTOMER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS, USER GUIDE, PHATNOISE MUSIC MANAGER USER’S MANUAL AND SOFTWARE CD. 9 FINAL VERIFICATION INSERT THE DMS CARTRIDGE IN THE PHATBOX, TURN KEY TO “ACCESSORY”, PRESS “CD” ON THE HEAD UNIT AND WATCH FOR THE “EX” TO APPEAR ON THE DISPLAY (THIS WILL TAKE UP TO 20 SEC.) ONCE YOU SEE THE “EX” YOU WILL HEAR: “WELCOME TO THE PHATNOISE CAR AUDIO SYSTEM” (APPROXIMATELY 6 SEC. LONG) AFTER THIS THE SYSTEM WILL THEN BEGIN TO PLAY THE PRE LOADED MUSIC. PAGE 12 OF 12
